Q: Anime about a girl group and they get powers

VanessaI watched like 3 years ago on Netflix but stopped because I had to move. I don't really remember much of it. @Stormblessed idk
@Jenayah I remember this one. I think it was made in Japan with a giant robot and the girls had uniforms of some sort.
They might have had magical powers too.
And some of them had hair in unusual colors, that might narrow it down.

Not all magical girls have mechas.

Q: Jack and Sally's children

Raz AquatoIn the epilogue of the official Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, it says this: "Four or five skeleton children at hand" who play together in a xylophone band. It is obviously implied that these are Jack and Sally's children...but how is it possible for them to reproduce?

@Jenayah That's of course true, but mechas are common in anime.
@Jenayah Not all of them do, but they should.

Q: Term for immortality that only prevents death from old age

SeeDerekEngineerIs there a term for immortality that only prevents death from old age? For example, the elves from The Lord of the Rings are "immortal", but only to the effects of dying from age. They can still be killed from wounds. So they are technically not immortal. In fact, the use of the term "immorta...

Alright, so I am far from blameless on this one. I answered the question in early days, when it was just about being unaging, and gave a technical answer. Then, the question got revised to just want Fantasy or Sci-Fi mentions.
I kept my answer up because, honestly, I was enjoying the rep bump. Now, there's some squabbling over whether to keep the change in the question, which nullified my answer, which is complicated by the weren't having accepted it.
I probably should fall on my sword and surrender my answer somehow, but I'm not entirely certain how, now that it's heavily upvoted and accepted.

Just leave it be, Null has already looked at it and taken the action to make your answer acceptable within the question's limits by reverting the edit
And edits to a question should not invalidate answers anyhow so reverting the edit was the best bet in my opinion
Now it's dropped from the HNQ it'll start to die away too

11:11 AM
What TLC said, although a meta about "how do we handle single word requests when they're still about SFF topic" could be of use
IMHO this is on-topic as immortality is SFF - although it's an incredibly dull question. And we've had such questions before, we even have a terminology tag

11:33 AM
I don't think we need a meta for it, it is on topic it's just that some users don't like them

11:51 AM
Well it'd be one of these "let's do a meta so that we can throw it in the face of angry close-vote-as-DV people when they say it's off-topic"

That's not always a good approach

well it would have some kind of "official" stamp
and if the reverse happens and the meta gets downvoted as hell well alright it's off-topic if the community doesn't want it

I think with 67 questions in the tag it's proven that people want it, it's just that some vocal users don't like it and were kicking up a stink and super downvoting
The main problem with that question is that it went to the HNQ

@TheLethalCarrot aye

I like the HNQ but there are some questions where it just takes on a life of its own and won't die and then it causes problems
That's where I think we need the ability to kick questions out of the HNQ
Hopefully we'll get something like that with the "changes"

11:57 AM
"we" as users or "we" as our mods?
'cause TBH if the users have the ability to kick out a question from HNQ it will get messy real soon

"we" as a community... whether that is all users, high rep users or mods I don't know

Not saying that all mods will always make the best decision but still, that's less people to pick from in the first place
@TheLethalCarrot eh... dunno, that seems wrong

My point was I don't know who it would be best to give the power to
Mods at least but there are pros and cons for giving it to high rep users

I say mods
they're already used to being blamed for everything anyways :P

That is what they are there for

12:00 PM
High rep users I'm less sure about
you can get high rep by specialising in a trendy tag and not knowing the rest

That's the same with mods though
I've always said rep is a poor judgement for the privileges users get

Yeah, but mods are supposed to know how the site "overall" works
@TheLethalCarrot you're not wrong

But it is the best metric we are given by SE so got to work with what we have
I'd love to see a system where privileges get unlocked through trust rather than rep and the more trust you earn and the more you are "proven" to be able to use the tools you have the more you unlock and if you start losing trust you lose privileges and have to earn it back again
But that would be super complicated and a major overhaul with how SE works so it's incredibly doubtful it will happen

How would you gain trust?

Well that's the thing, you pretty much have to assess it by some poor factors so it's doubtful it'd work
But it's questionable if it's better than rep
Though off the top of my head

12:07 PM
Still, I'm curious to hear what'd you have thought about

Edits unlocked after X amount of suggested edits are approved and you have >= Y% accepted
Same with flags and review queues/close/reopen privs

mmmh fair nuff, though how do the first ones get trust?
@TheLethalCarrot sounds reasonables as well

That can then be maintained by comparing the review outcome with how you voted

I meant first users
on the site
when they can't be revviewed by others 'cause there's no other

Oh that was a continuation of my previous comment not a reply
Well that's part of the problem isn't it? New users to an established site are "easy" just unlock flags/suggesting edits like we do now at X rep (15?) but new users on a new site? Dunno
I'd also like to see time on the site/network factor into it somehow

12:13 PM
@TheLethalCarrot then again there's not much new sites on SE anymore is it
@TheLethalCarrot that'd probably be a good idea too
and yeah flagging is 15 rep

@Jenayah No but low traffic sites would probably fall somewhere in between where this system wouldn't always work

maybe adjust per site then?
Or per categories of sites
Trinity

We already sort of do that with Beta sites
Rep is lower to unlock certain things

High but not too high traffic sites (the HNQ ones mainly I'd guess)
low traffic but gradutaed sites
beta sites
or something
duck I screwed up again

This is an off-topic question for Science Fiction & Fantasy SE, so your question is going to be closed I'm sure, that aside, of course it's possible, just incredibly unlikely unless the girl has extremely strong thighs & the guy's really crap at self defense & basically just sits there & lets her get on with it, it's going to take the same length of time as strangling someone, so maybe a minute or more to pass out & another 4 or 5 before brain damage is irreparable, so it's quicker to stop & bash their skull in after they pass out. — Pelinore 6 mins ago

@Stormblessed Flag-deleting "thanks" comments on ID questions is problematic because by site policy we often use those as reason to close the question, and if they get deleted the question might get reopened unnecessarily, re-closed, more comments, headaches ...

plus to be honest, a "thank you" comment might be chatty but it's perfectly fine on SFF...

3:23 PM
IMO, autoflagging any single-flag-deletable comments is problematic because it removes the human element altogether. There's a reason why SE doesn't just auto-delete all those comments without flags.

blahblahblah comments temporary blahblahbmah we hate fun blahblahblah... Truth be told if we hated fun and helping people SFF wouldn't exist so "thanks comments policy" is pointless on SFF

(The song to go with that image)

@Jenayah There's an interesting spike in the flags-per-month graph for SFF at one particular month when one particular user was flagging hundreds of "thanks" or "+1" comments from the entire history of the site.

@SQB That sort of reminds me of a scene from American Gods. Very strange show.

@Donald.McLean Haven't seen it. Read the book though, so I can imagine.

in hindsight I must have been quite the bother for flag handling this summer xD
Especially since I didn't know what a mod flag was and kept leaving comments on NaA stuff I flagged...
Heck, I was such a noob
apologies for that, I guess

@Jenayah Not sure if our graph goes that far. (It's not built in to the mod tools; we've just requested one from CMs a couple of times.)

is it something accessible by others? Or mods only?

@Jenayah I really liked that you were doing that. Did I never ping you to thank you for it?
It's much easier to handle a borderline NAA flag when the flagger leaves a comment explaining exactly why it's NAA.
Also probably easier for the answerer to figure out why their answer was deleted and potentially fix it (in the rare cases when that happens).

@Jenayah And now you instead leave such comments on every answer you give. ;-)

3:32 PM
@Randal'Thor That's what the "mod dialog" box is for... Dunno why I never really caught on it till ~September

@Jenayah Like I said, it's not even accessible to mods. Just a thing CMs shared with us once or twice.
@Jenayah Well, not every NAA needs a custom mod flag. Best to flag as NAA with a comment; then either LQP reviewers or mods can understand the reason for the flag and get it deleted.

@Randal'Thor I think we had a couple of "don't worry, the amount of flags to handle has risen up but we manage" chat comments
@Randal'Thor IIRC most were from drive-by users never to be seen again, in these cases
@NapoleonWilson yes, but I delete them at once when it does get accepted :)
@Randal'Thor sure, but are you allowed to share it?

@Jenayah Yeah, that's why I added the parenthetical about rareness.
@Jenayah Dunno, probably not. Anyway that would rely on being able to find it again :-P

@Randal'Thor true, but I don't think I knew the queues' mechanisms at that time. What kind of flags sent it to queue etc

@Randal'Thor has a lot to do with whether it'd been edited or stuff, I guess. At least I think that's the conclusion we went to in an earlier discusion with TLC

sonofspyCan't find this short story...searched for years Everybody given $1,000,000 at birth A single guy figures out how to game the system...everybody thinks he's crazy to buck the system but he wins.

Is there anything in this story that is science fictional or fantastical? I mean giving someone a million dollars at birth is fantastical to an extent but could plausibly happen (hahaha) so it isn't really fantastical. Could you edit to explain why this is SFF-nal? — TheLethalCarrot 2 mins ago

@TheLethalCarrot I decided to interpret it such that he's looking for an SFF story, and commented assuming that.

Though it is generally discouraged, as what legitimate reason would you need for multiple accounts? Idle hands are the devil's playground, etc etc. That said, for thi...

alright thanks

@Randal'Thor But when it was new?

@Stormblessed Meh.
I'm generally leery about migrating to main meta, because it's so fierce there.

@Randal'Thor Wdym?

It's not that scary... also, it has mods now, so flags actually get handled on time.

While we're there, can we tag rename to ?

@b_jonas Synonym?
But yes
Definitely
When I'm talking, I never say "Super Mario Brothers", always "bros."

6:07 PM
Either that, or make a general tag that applies to the whole Super Mario franchise.
But I'm not sure what we'd call the latter.

@Stormblessed For instance, lots of questions asked in good faith get downvoted to hell and closed just because it's something that's been discussed a lot before (which meta regulars will know but innocent newbies won't).

@b_jonas Maybe the movie should be separate from the game for tags?

The whole "downvotes mean disagreement" thing works fine on per-site metas, but when there's an actual rep system, not so much.

Like is the movie, or or something else for the games

6:08 PM
@Randal'Thor truth be told, the most "DVed to hell" questions I see are "why are there DVs that's unfair it's not good for newbies" questions which honestly are just a rant
there's a good post on MSO about that...

I guess an "abolish rep on main meta" feature-request would be downvoted to hell by all the people who like their rep ;-)

A: Which Sanderson works are part of the Cosmere and which aren't?

KutuluMikeList of Cosmere works The Cosmere series is on-going, so the works that are part of it will grow. However, the more recent works set in the Cosmere have been more clearly part of a shared universe, with crossover characters (like Hoid) and concepts (like Shards and Adonalsium itself, how magic w...

@Jenayah Not what I'm talking about.

Why isn't this flagged as list of works?
It's a good question, but not really different
From that

@Randal'Thor then what?

6:09 PM
@Stormblessed It's not a list question: it's about classification.

I think we want a franchise tag. There are way too many games, most won't have enough questions here. And more importantly, some of the questions are about the general lore:
scifi.stackexchange.com/q/205833/4918 "Who put the coins in the Mario Universe?" scifi.stackexchange.com/q/131735/4918 "How did the Mario Brothers discover/enter the Mushroom Kingdom?" scifi.stackexchange.com/q/131712/4918 "What is Mario's full name?" scifi.stackexchange.com/q/131863/4918 "Is Mario killing people when he smashes bricks?" These aren't specific to one game.

Was actually really useful for sorting out our tagging system.
@Jenayah I was talking about questions asked in good faith, not rants.

I'd take an example, actually...
The ones being "DVed as hell" are usually rants, not sure what other ones we're talking about
Or what your threshold for "DVed to oblivion" is :)

I'm talking about ones asked in good faith. Too lazy to find an example though.
Rants being downvoted to hell isn't so much of a problem.

sure

6:13 PM
Since we were talking about why main meta is bad, I was specific.

but generally, I find that "questions asked before, but in a neutral tone or stuff" are just usually closed as dupes but not that much DVed

You know what's weird? Brandon Sanderson has his name as a registered trademark under Dragonsteel Entertainment
I wonder if he's gonna sell it to Ubisoft eventually

Q: Were both of Howl's city exits within the same country?

Mark RogersThe first few times I watched Howl's Moving Castle and even when I read about the story on Wikipedia it's not totally clear where the two major city exits, Porthaven and the capital Kingsbury, are in the fictional universe. At first I assumed those exits were each in the two different warring co...

This question makes no sense if you misread "exits"

you were searching for the "Moving Cities" tag as well? :P

I read Defending Elysium.
I didn't realize it was the same series.

Q: Did the characters in Moving Pictures not know about cameras like Twoflower's?

Ankh-WizardIn Moving Pictures, video-cameras are invented... But they're essentially the same thing as Twoflower's camera which only took one picture at a time but Twoflower probably could've asked it to paint many ver-very fast. So did these character's not know about these iconographs? And if so why didn'...

Ah, but it makes sense.

@Adamant you read Mistborn, right?

Q: Can Allomancers Soothe or Riot themselves?

StormblessedIn Mistborn, can Allomancers burn zinc and brass to Riot or Soothe their own emotions, such as to calm down if scared or cause a fight-or-flight reaction to trigger adrenaline?

You could get some easy rep from giving an answer here, doesn’t seem very complicated
(and self answers get downvoted, they also aren’t as useful necessarily because I’m not much of an expert, having just read the first book so far)

The answer to any question like this is "Yes, with the right tricks."

I expect some trick with Identity could work.
Like blanking your identity, maybe.
It's possible that the magic wouldn't recognize you as its user, then.
Or possibly not, it could work either way.
Or like how Shallan can create personae; there's probably some trick to allow a Lightweaver/Mistborn to use one of their personae to influence themselves.
(Hoid might be an example of someone who could do this, although his Lightweaving is different).

Q: What would be the effect of a combination of the Furnunculus Curse and the Jelly-Legs Curse?

AlexWhat would happen if the Furnunculus Curse and the Jelly-Legs Curse were used on someone at the same time? Would each curse just simply retain its regular effect, or would there be a new combined effect? If the latter, what would the new effect be?

@Marvin what’s the problem?

@Marvin that some weird experiment about voting to close as POB @Alex? :)
@Stormblessed presumably people are downvoting because "no research" (as shown by the answer). Or people could be downvoting because they're triggered by the opening "What would happen". Plus I won't say that some people seem keen on DVing Alex but eh kinda

Q: Identify Japanese Book - "When all the cats in the world had died"

user16541I'm trying to find a Japanese book titled something like "When all the cats in the world had died"(translation may be inaccurate). I tried googling that English title-- no luck. I've gotten away with much more superfluous ones
@Randal'Thor was it because of tags?
