Oh, so it is that Andy Weir. I wondered why someone would mention anything but The Martian in that case. ;-)

@Donald.McLean that one too! :D

"my science fiction" -> "more science fiction"

I figured as much. ;-)

SQB
@NapoleonWilson the answer was written in early 2015, while the film was released in September of that year.

@SQB The books is much older, though, and as much as I gathered was a bomb even before the film.

@Donald.McLean I like The Laundry Files I'll check out his other works when I've finished that.

(Even then the film was already in everyone's mouth, and by extension the book.)

The Martian is a freaking good book.

SQB
Haven't read it yet.

I'll probably start listening to it, soon. I'm in the mood for space things. But I rather started with Artemis, since I already know The Martian's story sufficiently well.

SQB
I need to read Green Mars and Blue Mars first.
What I liked about Red Mars was that it didn't feature much new tech, only cutting edge tech.
It's (iirc) mostly current technology with the dials turned up.
I'm not sure if it's hard enough to be called "hard sf", but it's hard enough for me.
And if anyone quotes only part of that sentence, they're toast.

5:17 PM
@SQB what makes you think anyone would ever do that? It is known that the internet is only filled with people who makes a point to always replace every quote, especially partial ones, with their context.

Q: Earliest historical example of "heroes NEVER kill" and when did the prohibition become pervasive and accepted?

manofsteelanswers.comToday, it's often taken for granted or as a truism that heroes don't kill (despite plenty of evidence historically and in fiction to the contrary). In fact, it is often taken to the extreme that the heroic ideal ought never kill under any circumstance, situation, exception, or excuse - or otherw...

Q: Looking for a short story about selling ghosts

AshThere is a short story that I'm sure I own but cannot find because my collection is too huge, it involves a supernatural detective who investigates a murder by buying the ghost of the victim at some kind of supernatural market, that is all I remember about it and I can't think of any of the other...

Q: Webcomic about cute demons

ErhannisAnybody know what webcomic this is from? Slightly different from the usual "what's that story" question, but all I have to go off of is this one image, and google image search yields nothing. For helping other searches, I guess, here's what I know, in text form: Characters appear to be demons...

Q: First example of the poisoned hero's last battle

AshThe two examples I can name off the top of my head are from The 13th Warrior when Buliwyf, dying from the mother's poison, fights his final battle and wins regardless, and in David Gemmell's Drenai Cycle when Druss fights his final defense of Dros Delnoch after being poisoned in an earlier duel, ...

Q: Who killed these people?

Adamant were both killed by a glowing purple assassination spell. I wasn't quite sure who cast it, though. Yuan Ji. In favor: he's perfectly willing to kill people, and he often attacks incorporeally. Pian Feng and the Bear King also were described as having his seal on their body because he ripped ...

Q: Why did James Gunn direct all those Stan Lee cameos?

Donatello SwansinoApparently, James Gunn directed a whole lot of Stan Lee cameos, including, and limited to, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. Why? I mean, it makes sense as to why he directed the ones in his own movies, but why in ...

Q: How did The Doctor take Harriet Jones down in the Christmas Invasion?

tilley31At the end of the Christmas Invasion episode, after Harriet Jones orders to shoot down the alien spaceship, the Doctor, visibly mad, tells her he could take her down with a single word, or rather six. The exchange went like this: DOCTOR: Don't challenge me, Harriet Jones, because I'm a compl...

@SQB Thanks, that's nice. Especially the italics, which I apparently didn't copy from the original quote.
I know I have a lot of typos in quotes in Sci Fi answers, but they're usually in Harry Potter quotes that I type by hand when I don't proofread them properly, not in ones from the web.
@Alex I was upset back then, but maybe I was wrong. This conversation isn't going anywhere though. (That's not why I left chat, I had to go for IRL reasons, but still.)

@b_jonas No problem.

Q: Background to Jedi robes

SeamusthedogApart from being cool, is there any background story to the Jedi robes? They all seem to be similar if not the same ie. Same colours, except the obvious black robes of Anakin and Luke, same material and style. Is this a uniform for Jedi even though other characters where similar outfits without b...

Q: A movie with a dragon born in an underground laboratory

ClockworkAround 6 to 18 years ago, I stumbled on a movie while browsing the TV. I think I stumbled on the movie in the middle of the plot. A group of people were stuck in what looked like an underground laboratory, with a dragon wandering around. The dragon was possibly created there. The dragon aside...

Q: Looking for television episode

ScottI'm still trying to find another scifi show/series/episode - it has similarities to the one Twilight Zone with the downed WWII aircraft. But in this one, a bunch of scientists stumble onto ideas that put them on the track of what amounts to a grand-unification-theory that explains the fundamental...

Q: X-Men Reading order after 2012?

AndrewI have found this complete guide for the reading order of X-Men comics and tie-ins but sadly it stops at the publishing year of 2012. Could anyone tell me the reading order for the next events like RessurXion, X-men Gold/Blue/Red, Astonishing X-Men and other possible related stories after AvX.

Q: Who were Yuan Ji's victims from the other clans?

AdamantIn order to Yuan Ji needed to steal the spiritual power of people from the royal bloodlines of the various clans. Clearly, the Fire Prince from the beginning makes one. Assuming he was the one who killed Pian Feng and the Bear King, that covers the Spirit and Bear Clans. He, in Lian Ji's body...

Q: Does this "collecting royal souls" plotline have a common origin?

AdamantA few works seem to share a rather specific plotline, regarding the collection of the souls of various royal bloodlines. For instance, in The Bone Witch and its sequels, by Rin Chupeco, part of the process for creating the all-powerful shadowglass (particularly capable of raising the dead) req...
