@mithrandir - I'd have asked a moderator about deleted comments.
I don't think it's worth bugging a mod every time I want to reopen a question about checking for deleted comments.
06:29
@mithrandir - in the case of story ID, yes, it is.
For the obvious reason.
06:51
I don't think it's worth opening all these story id reopen votes when the OP isn't going to come back and accept or confirm the question and they are almost always word for word identical
07:27
@Adamant I've reopened a couple dozen questions the last couple days, I don't think our mods would appreciate it so much if I bugged them ;)

Q: Can I ask for titles of background music in some particular movie?

Book StrikerI don't know if this is allowed. I want to ask background music because I don't know their title or the original version since it is played instrumentally.

Q: How long have the Inhumans inhabited the moon in TV show?

Worse_UsernameLooking at http://marvel.com/universe/Attilan the Earth-616 inhumans have been inhabiting the moon for a relatively short period of time: seven thousand years ago they began to live in isolation on an island in atlantic ocean. Then in mid-20th century they moved to Himalayas. Some time after that...

Q: The music of the tags

Rand al'ThorThe tag music (99 questions) has the following tag wiki excerpt (and no tag wiki): Refers to musical themes, cues, or scores present in works of science fiction. Usually used in relation to film or tv series. In practice, the tag seems to have been used for at least three different types of...

@Edlothiad @FuzzyBoots please don't VTD spam
12:52
@Mithrandir My primary concern with spam is getting rid of it asap, if it needs a custom flag for a moderator to then undelete and redelete from a mod I can ping one or raise a flag later.
13:06
@Edlothiad but that shouldn't be.
If it's deleted not via flags then the spam consequences will not take effect.
I know
Hence why the mods can handle that. Deleting it hides it from the majority of users. Mods can deal with it after it's gone from most eyes.
I've been meaning to ping @Null about this as well, as I've seen him multiple times manually deleting spam instead of flagging as spam to delete it.
For all I know it'll take just as long for the community to delete it via flags as it will for a mod to come along and be like "yep, undelete, re-delete none's the wise"
@Edlothiad nah
What do you mean "nah"? everything there is a fact
13:09
I mean 'nah, I don't agree with the philosophy of making the mods undelete/redelete'.
Most things should be able to be taken care of without the mods on the site.
Moderators are human exception handlers, not the ones who are supposed to deal with every individual detail of keeping the site clean.
</speech from a spam obsessed mod>
It just causes more work for everyone involved.
@Mithrandir It being deleted and not hidden sounds like an exception to me.
"everyone involved" the 3 delete voters and the 1 mod.
@Edlothiad first off, if you flag as spam and delete it via votes it'll be hidden but the IP block and whatnot won't kick in
@Edlothiad lot of extra work for questionable benefit
I'd say negative benefit, i.e harm
Because 20k+ users are only 0.117...% of users that can flag for deletion, it's far more likely that it will be flagged and dealt with that way. If it's deleted by 3 20k users, it's a case of opportunity cost. If the delete happens quicker than the spam flags, it's hidden from the majority of users (0.997875844%). On that off-chance, a mod can be made aware and then deal with it. Either-way you're guaranteeing it to be hidden from 0.998% of the community, the mods can undelete and delete
IF mods deleting it as spam don't cause the IP block and what not, then obviously that's an issue, and should be made more obvious to the common user. But, as far as I'm aware it's logical that it does.
Manually deleting it does not cause any effects on the author of the spam. This applies to both moderators and 20kers.
If it's deleted via flags - whether that's six user flags or one mod flag - those penalties kick in.
So there's no option for a moderator to go "this is spam, I'll delete it as spam" it has to have 5 spam flags otherwise it won't be deleted?
@Mithrandir So the mod can undelete and raise one mod flag, done
6 seconds of work
13:24
But why have that work necessary?
And the question has already been hidden from 99.8% of the community
That's not the point.
Why is hiding it so important?
@Edlothiad Thats 99.78...% not 0.9978% obviously
I'm more concerned with preventing them from posting it again.
Hiding it is literally the whole point.
13:25
No, it's not.
Blocking them from posting in the next second?
Deleting it as spam is the point.
This is more of an issue with the system then it is with me casting delete votes like I'm "supposed" to do.
@Mithrandir If they were really that keen to spam, then they would just use a vpn to get past whatever IP ban (if that's how technology works, I don't really know)
Whereas hiding the advertisements from the user so they don't have their effect, +1

Q: Should we vote to delete spam posts?

AdamantIf a post accumulates six spam flags, it will be automatically deleted, and its content hidden even from users with the “see deleted posts” privilege (10k+ on regular sites, 2k+ on beta sites). In addition, this will provide helpful data for the network’s spam-detection filters. On the other ha...

Does advertising smokey count as spam :thinking:

Nah, Ed isn't affiliated with the project
I know I'm not, I meant the post
(rimshot.jpg)
@Mithrandir Noted. I learned something. :)
@FuzzyBoots :D
13:54
@FuzzyBoots You did that all wrong. You're meant to argue.
14:20
@Edlothiad ^_^ I'm conflict-averse.

14:34
@Mithrandir Yeah, I know you're a spam-obsessed mod. Doesn't mean you have to push that obsession onto everyone else.
This is a common thing with Charcoal people: coming in to tell communities or even mods that they're doing it wrong because you have this obsession with getting rid of spam AS FAST AND THOROUGHLY AS POSSIBLE!!!!!
2
Yes, it's slightly better to nuke spam via flags than manually delete it. But manually deleting it still has the main desired effect, getting it off the site, and SE won't collapse if the occasional spammer doesn't have their IP blocked quickly enough.
I normally go on a sweep every once in a while and destroy all the users who've spammed recently anyway.
15:03
@Edlothiad: Not to make fun of you, but I was amused seeing your deleted "answer" at scifi.stackexchange.com/a/173237/23243. I'm pretty sure I've done that before myself.
@FuzzyBoots The table is no longer one solid board of wood
I wondered when the comment box had gotten so big
TBH the answer you commented on is better than the top answer.
Are you assuming I voted?
... no? I didn't say anything about you or your votes.
I know, hence why I asked
If you had I'd have known you were assuming I voted ;)
15:53
The f*ck happened here with all the stars
You pushed all the previous floofs down
Thank you, actually
@TimE.Lord I tend to unstar floofs as well as unpinning them once the day is over.
3
@Randal'Thor You monster
Because it's usually the same person posting them and starring them, so it would amount to someone starring themselves.
It's not my fault no one else understands what a floof looks like

Q: What is new Thor's form?

RajeshThis question contains spoilers. Please return if you don't want it. My question is in regards to Thor's new form. The one where he has lightning all around him. If I'm right, this is the King Thor version. Not sure though. So the question is, is this new form his own power or does it have so...

Exciting news about the mysterious new chamber (chambers?) discovered in the Great Pyramid of Giza. My guess: it's the room where the ancient Stargate lies buried. :-)

With respect to this, I don’t think it’s science fiction or fantasy, precisely.

Q: Character With Weird Last Name Harassed by Substitute Teacher

imallettI would like to remember the name of a story, which I believe was possibly a young-adult novel. The main (female) character (1st-person narration?) has some bizarre, new-age-sounding name, possibly "India Ink" (totally un-Google-able, possibly a surname, with a normal-ish first name). One day, ...

Q: Does Thor lose certain powers without his hammer?

Metro BoominWhen Thor loses his hammer, he believes he is no longer as strong as he was because he lost his powers as the God Of Thunder. Odin comes to him in a vision (twice) and shows that the hammer "was to focus his power". We first see that Thor has the powers of thunder within him when he was being ba...

Q: Would we enjoy new Thor offering after watching earlier film in series?

aparente001We plan to go see the new Thor movie -- Ragnarok (2017). Would we get more out of this film by first watching one or more of the previous films in the series? (I'm not asking if the 2017 film works as a stand-alone film, I'm asking if we'd appreciate the recent film more if we had already watch...
