Q: Looking for a fantasy trilogy and author; supposed to be based on real magical tales

Yoshi BroI am looking for a fantasy series that was probably written in the fifties to the late sixties. I'm positive about most of the Author's name: Peter (S.) Tibblet (?). I know the last name began with T and there was a double letter -- almost certainly -bb- of my memory is correct. The trilogy w...

Q: How did the dagger of Seth get its power?

RabidRavenI'm remembering a story (maybe a short film) with I believe a female protagonist using some instance of augmented reality to mute or filter things and people. The protagonist worked in advertising/media/conglomerate of some sort which was either the source of the tech, or some type of upgrade tha...

Q: Should questions like "Should I watch/read ..." be closed as opinion based?

RichSSometimes people post questions asking what to read or watch. "Should I read this book?" "In which order should I watch this film series?" "Should I watch the old episodes in this TV series?" "Should I read the book or watch the movie first?" These are primarily opinion based. Answers will va...

Q: Late 90's or early 00's graphic novel with a girl and a airship

carl elsaesserI'm trying to remember the name of a graphic novel from the late 90's or early 00's. I've done a bunch of searching online but can't find anything. I don't have much to go off of. It was beautifully drawn series of comics or compiled into a graphic novel. It was about a young girl on a air ship a...

Q: What makes the Free Cities "free"?

ApproachingDarknessFishSlavery is rampant in Volantis and Lys. Pentos isn't much better, with indentured servants who are slaves in all but name--and the only reason they aren't slaves in name is because Braavos forbids it. The cities seem to be largely under the boot of powerful trading lords such as Magister Illyrio....

Q: What happened to the No-Maj bank manager Newt Petrified?

VoronwëIf I remember correctly, Newt casts Petrificus Totalus on a bank manager. The guy obviously knew what was happening, seeing that he muttered a strained "Kowalski" while Petrified. I'd expect that the flash of light from Newt's wand was obvious too. What happene...

@Bellatrix Missy. She's completely bananas, an unusually charismatic villain, and in the newest season she's also started to have a Bellatrixy hairstyle. You should love her :-)
Michelle Gomez is awesome.
@Gallifreyan She's awesomely bananas, but I'm not sure if I like what they're doing with her character this season.
Clearly the most interesting twist is still to come though. I'm very interested to see what happens next episode.
(I don't think I said anything spoilery there?)
@Randal'Thor Still haven't seen a single episode from the new season :)
@Gallifreyan Well, get on with it :-)
Calling yourself Gallifreyan and not being caught up on DW is like ... well, like calling yourself Rand al'Thor and not having finished WoT yet.

Martin Walzli was just finishing the audible books of the lord of the rings and I'm a little bit confused. I'd read the comic adaptation of "The Last Wish".
Oh, @Randal'Thor, did you hear that we're getting a Witcher series from Netflix?
And Andrzej Sapkowski will be the creative advisor.
I am certain it'll be compared to Game of Thrones and American Gods, and I hope we'll get something on that level.
And it's being developed in collaboration with Platige, which is also great.

@Gallifreyan It's Pride month! A fellow mod reminded me halfway through the month and I remembered I had this alternate version from earlier.

true... that's what makes it a hard decision. I think either way, what I wear this summer is going to feature more than one color

Do you think asking what notable pieces of pop culture have been inspired by the H2G2 is too broad?
@Narusan Yes.
Okay, thanks. Do you have any idea to improve that question? Or where I would research that? Wikipedia doesn't list anything, and a quick google search didn't turn up anything either
What do you think?
@Narusan I think pretty much anything asking for a list of works would be off-topic. Asking here is a good idea, though :)
I particularly like the pose.
18:14
@Gallifreyan Officially asking here then: What are some major influences of the H2G2 on other works of popular fiction?
@Bellerophon it's probably still going to be hard to see in chat, but perhaps less so, and I think it would look good (but I like circles)
@Narusan E.g. asking "was X influenced by H2G2?" would be ok.
So far, I have Paranoid Android and Red Dwarf
@Bellerophon The colours are more uniform than your current picture, so it will be easier to recognise in chat where your profile picturesis pretty small.
@Gallifreyan Don't want to spam the site with a ludicrous amount of similar questions though ;)
@Narusan Did you read this?
Weird, on my profile it shows the picture but on the little bar thing it shows the bottom as greyed out.
18:19
@Gallifreyan Yes, but it is not so enlightening. I've got Paranoid Android from that report. It's mostly concerned with the H2G2 itself and its many adaptations though...
I've also read this and this
@Bellerophon You might want to remove the www.theoi.com though... Unless it is there intentionally

@Narusan @Loong Thanks.
19:03
@DaaaahWhoosh Nicely done. I've wondered about it myself but it makes quite some sense now. Another aspect: I imagine it is a lot easier to be unnoticed by the Enemy without carrying around 6~9 horses (depending on if hobbits/Gimli share horses).
Never mind, you did mention that when talking about stealth.
yeah, I feel like there's a reason I forgot to mention, but I can't think of what it would be
19:24
oh, @Edlothiad, if you're going to edit my answer, please make sure my recent edit about Bill isn't wiped out

@DaaaahWhoosh He does seem pretty crucial to the overall victory of the Fellowship
@Randal'Thor Is Missy likely to have any surprise children? I don't know enough about Doctor Who to be able to find this out for myself.
@DaaaahWhoosh Let me know when you're done, as I'm curious
@DCOPTimDowd it'll be a while, I need access to the original image and a couple of obscure sites I don't want to go looking for yet
@Bellatrix No children that I'm aware of, so don't worry :)

it's magic, we can't just make up your magic for you
('we' being Worldbuilding)
Ah. Plot based?
no, just too broad
Or whatever that is?
it's magic. Literally anything can happen.
@DaaaahWhoosh. Stop stopping people sending bad questions to Worldbuilding. You ruin all the fun.
2
21:12
@Bellerophon true. If they migrated it I could vote to close it again.
but yeah, @Mithrandir, the way I see it Worldbuilding is for people who are building worlds, which means they should have done some of the work themselves. Asking how much energy is lost during magic is like asking "I'm creating a new branch of mathematics using completely different axioms. What's 2+2 in this new system?"
2
@Axelord Done. I used the address we used before.
@DaaaahWhoosh it fails the don't migrate crap rule, so that was never an option ;)

whoo 4k rep! I'm like those fancy computer monitors now

@Bellatrix I would say, judging from what we know about the character, that it's very unlikely. But given what Doctor Who is like, its tendency to be wildly unpredictable and its lack of respect for previously established canon, it's impossible to make any absolute promises.
@Randal'Thor Given how little we know of Time Lord biology, I'd say that calling it unlikely is highly speculative.
@Politank-Z I was thinking it's unlikely given her personality, not because of any biological considerations. Can you imagine her being kind and maternal?
@Randal'Thor Hasn't stopped any number of humans from reproducing.
Have you been following the new series, btw?
22:45
Plus, she has had several regenerations we know nothing of. She/he could have reproduced any number of times in those days.
Yes, I am fully up to date.
They're doing some weird things with her character these days, which I'm not sure I like. But I'm guessing the biggest twist is still to come in the final episode.
I want to make a River Song referene, and say 'spoilers!', but because of said spoilers I'm now going to run away
I think the current series started off slowly. Bill has had her moments, but has been, on the whole, exceedingly generic. It took off quite nicely from episode 3 or so, though.
@DaaaahWhoosh Sorry, I was trying to keep it unspoilery! @Pol, perhaps we should relocate to:
