Q: Does Tywin Lannister ever address Varys as "Lord"?

AnonymousIn season 4 episode 6, Oberyn addresses Varys as "Lord Varys." Varys notes that no one is under any obligation to call him "lord," but Oberyn shrewdly notes that everyone calls him that anyway. Does Tywin Lannister ever address Varys as such, on the show and in the books?

Q: story identification: Everyone turns into a fantasy creature

CoretexI read a book in a library when I was young that I have been trying to remember since. A town of people is suddenly (or not so suddenly) transformed into creatures, monsters, or people of a fantasy nature. At least one townsfolk turned into a bear. Of the main characters there was one male who ...

Q: How quickly can Data grow out his hair?

OmegacronIt has been mentioned a couple of times in TNG that Data can control the growth of his hair follicles. In the episode "The Schizoid Man", he grows a beard as a social experiment. However, this came as a surprise to both Geordi and Deanna, both of whom see Data on a daily basis. This leads me to b...

The MandolorianI'm trying to debunk a theory and this is a key point to my argument. I just need a reliable source to reference and an answer to my question. The most recent D.C. Cannon would be apreicieated if it can be found. Also I would prefer references to comics over animated series.

Why and how did I get a -1 Rep change for down voting this answer? scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/160176/…
because downvoting answers always costs reputation
@Ixrec Hum, Ok, I have not seen that before but thanks for the information.
it's easy to miss since questions are far more often worthy of downvoting and there's no penalty there (precisely because questions need that cleanup/feedback more urgently)
@Ixrec It is strange such a blatant Non Answer would carry penalties though but now I know and can manage it :)
you do get that 1 rep point back if the answer is deleted =)
13:26
@Ixrec He he then why hasn't it been deleted? Not that I care about the -1 but it is blatantly not an answer ....
Well, it IS an answer. It's a bad answer, but it is an answer. So the NAA flag doesn't apply and downvoting is the correct response.
2
@Ixrec Ok and again thanks for the information.
though it's already at -7 so I don't feel any need to throw away one of my rep points on it
=)
@Ixrec That is of course the lesson I am taking from this, to not down vote such answers and save the -1 rep for answers that can become better.
For future reference, "not an answer" should be reserved for things that actually aren't answers, such as follow-up questions, forum-y replies, comments, gibberish, etc. If you can describe an answer as "correct" or "incorrect" then it's definitely an answer, no matter how egregiously incorrect it may be.
13:33
@Ixrec I see and understand the distinction your making
@Babelfish Sure, roll back my edit.

I've never done frontline IT work, but does it match the stereotype of being one of those positions where it's on you to fix everything but you also have no power to make the system less fragile in the long run?

Places where they 'get' technology are excellent

Q: Harry Potter fireplace letters

MetaColonIn GoF we learned that the fireplace of Number 4, Privet Drive, has been replaced by an electric fire. @Babelfish I'm at loss as to why anyone would upvote that.
@Gallifreyan I up-voted it, since as far as I'm aware, I'm quite intrigued as to whether there's information whether or not they replaced it later, or if more powerful wizzys could force letters through electric fireplaces
Tonight is the film night! Come to chat at 9PM UTC (5 PM EDT/EST, 10PM GMT).

Q: Did the Shire import any goods?

LokiWe, of course, know that the Shire did export a few goods, such as Longbottom leaf which was at some point found in Orthanc. However, do we know if the Shire also imported any goods? If so, to whom? I'm only interested in canon, ie the books and any letters that Tolkien may have written.

@Babelfish Another unprompted rollback.
Does my edit not look better?
@Gallifreyan No, he says "In GOF they couldn't do this because of this electric ting, but before they could. Was electric ting installed before or is it new?"
@Edlothiad Yes, I understood that after an edit. Too bad I don't have the first 3 books right now to check.
@Edlothiad I think I've got to the bottom of it - just not sure enough to make it an answer... :)
16:33
On the topic of confused as to why things are getting upvotes, I can't possible see why this would be the "answer we deserve"
@Gallifreyan, why are you insisting their answer be structured in that way?
@Edlothiad Because the OP is asking about the character, not the actress. Because the photo is unnecessarily big. Because my links looked better.
It's their answer, I reckon you should just leave it.
I did, I simply don't understand why they insist on having it their way.
They may be stubborn and what their way

@Gallifreyan [cough]
@doppelgreener Welcome! Ready for the film night?
Yes. :D
but also i was coughing because that was a statement you could benefit from being very self-aware of
if you understand why you want it your way you might understand why they want it their way
@doppelgreener My way is better.
Well I'm sure you feel that way, but what if they feel that way about their own way of doing it?
They're wrong and I'm right.
17:18
;D
clearly we must consult Deep Thought
(On a more serious note, I did consider both the will of the answerer and the asker. I tried to make the answer more into what the asker appears to want without actually changing the contents, simply by rearranging some stuff. And the initial rollback appears to have been a conflict of simultaneous edits.)

> it is THEREFORE fair to say the Alpha gate was built for a planet on the other side of the galaxy probably ... and the origin symbol is pure coincidence
It's an answer. It's probably even a correct answer, because this is exactly what the accepted and highly-upvoted answer says.
@Gallifreyan So, is there a purpose or function the Cape Serves?
@EnigmaMaitreya Is there ever?
I haven't read the answer thoroughly but it seems to not add anything new to the existing answers and to contain a lot of extraneous information or irrelevant stream of consciousness. Someone more familiar with Stargate should probably leave a comment to that effect if that's correct.

afaik the capes only have a purpose if the material the cape's made out of has some special abilities. Otherwise it's pure style.
@Gallifreyan To me this is just one of those threads that are really over thought. Given the gate is made by an unknown source, then why assume symbols are Earth Centric?
I thought we did know who made the gates and who put them there
18:09
@SQB Exactly what I had in mind :)
actually, nvm, I don't recall the goauld having the ability to customize the symbols
@Ixrec The question is more about the original Movie not the series but gets expanded to the series in answers
well, yeah, it'd be silly to exclude all the rest of canon if the original movie doesn't provide an answer
@Ixrec I am not disagreeing I am saying the question, based on the original movie, the questioner accepts the symbols as Earth Centric (Sun Pyramid) without question. Then if the Ancients did make it then that becomes the answer

Q: Could a Calamarain Cloud house a human?

@Gallifreyan That is about my thinking of a Cape on Wonder Woman but given her Super Strength freeing it wouldn't be a problem but why would anyone want a hindrance that like that in the first place? :)
@EnigmaMaitreya I think he remarks on that earlier in the comic, but no one cared.
it certainly wouldn't have helped her in the new movie
at least Batman uses his to glide and look scary
18:21
@Ixrec In the animated series he also appears to use it for hiding and .... Bullet Proof?
I've definitely seen implausibly bullet proof capes in fiction before but I couldn't remember if Batman did that
also the bulletproof umbrellas the Kingsmen use
@Ixrec Not sure I have seen it in any movie and I never really read the comics, but the Animated series pretty much cast the cape as a defensive tool. Not that the animated series is all that good (except the reboot one where Bruce is old and helps a High School Kid be Batman, that was pretty good)
@Gallifreyan Going from top left to bottom right, 3 and 5 are what I would choose.
Oh, I think I've heard of the actress who played her.
I'm already on level 2 :D
18:34
Is Star Trek: The Motion Picture family friendly? (9+)
Now I'm on level 3, and I've learned variables and loops.
@Mithrandir One of the most famous scenes in it involves a grizzly transporter accident. Nothing's shown on-screen but the end result is implied to be horrifying, so I dunno where exactly that puts it.
everything else I believe is just the usual sci-fi light shows / "mild fantasy violence"
Language?
I definitely don't remember the movie well enough to comment on language, if there was any profanity it wasn't frequent.
according to commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/star-trek-the-motion-picture, the language is "Scotty says 'hell'"
It says 8+
18:40
(not that I have kids but commonsensemedia seems to always be a good place to get a quick answer about how appropriate a movie is, it's been accurate every time I was in a position to check it)
Thanks. Better than the 'bull****' in The Karate Kid.
youtube.com/watch?v=Ro_QpDJX-Sk the aforementioned transporter scene, if you want to check that
I should read that.
@Mithrandir I seem to recall there is a shower scene (through a mostly foged door) other than that, I do no recall anything that was more unfamily friendly than the series

~8 minutes away
I rolled in just in time
No, I mean at what image/logo/scene/whatever will the film start? Like, the synchronization image.
I'm guessing the very beginning? Makes most sense to me.
Well, what is the very beginning? ;-)
20:59
Hm. One sec, I'll sort out an answer for that.
There's usually a ton of logos at the beginning and it sometimes varies which and how many between versions.
Oh, didn't think of that.
playback speeds also vary; the primary reason I prefer to use the shared room is just to guarantee no desyncing nonsense
there was a time a friend and i were watching a James Bond movie from 2 different sources, and the play speed varied enough that 10 minutes in we were maybe 30 seconds apart
21:02
that's happened every single movie night I've been in
The screen size is just right to keep a window with mobile chat along one side of the monitor.

It's gonna be really hard to read chat and subtitles at the same time
That's pretty much why. ;-)
The Russian dubbing is atrocious.
21:09
fortunately this isn't the kind of movie where you must catch every line of dialogue to be sure you're following the plot
I'd assume the German one is pretty good, as usual. I love our dubbing industry.
Odin, is that you?
Ah, his eye simply fell out. Happens to everyone.
I'm suddenly getting Spirited Away vibes

@Ixrec Well, it's not like I thought he was genuinely caring about her. ;-)
I meant sorry as in the giant insect came back lol
Oh, maybe I'm not there yet.
I think most of them stood up because the Captain stood up, not sure if he was debating whether he needed to go somewhere or if he just needed to get his legs out of the way of her wheelchair or what
Yeah, I can deal with that thing, I guess.

Her mother's ill, and she's met a fairy as well.
