TOS, TNG, DS9, STV
Now we're getting STD. WHOOPS! They didn't think of that when naming the new series.
Anyone notice this?
04:23
@fredsbend Yes.
But it doesn’t really matter.
@BlueMoon93 Well, the translation of that title is “Voyage of the Three Young Sons of the King of Serendip,” so the proper English translation isn’t really much shorter.
Actually, would “Pilgrimage” be a better translation of the first word? Regardless.
SQB

That is not a shopping question, so that could be for the main Stack.
Or you could translate it as “Peregrination,” which is really the proper English equivalent by strict etymology.

Ron and Hermione’s, on the other hand....

Q: What short story had a man who taught himself to see with his fingers?

Matthias FrippWhen I was a kid (around 1981), I once read a short story where the main character gradually taught himself to see with his fingers. He used this skill to read books without looking at them (by seeing the text, not feeling it). And he may have used it for other things, I'm not sure. He was excite...

@Adamant that, and the related question, made me wonder: did Snape's Patrons actually change to match Lily's? I don't remember from the books if it did.
Or did it just match Lily's from the start?
07:21
@SQB It’s not clear.
I thought he only had a patronising because of his love for Lily, otherwise a death eater has no need for one. So his patronus didn't change, it just matched liky when he first summoned(?) it
@Edlothiad That’s a possibility, yes.

@Edlothiad Yes. Snape says "For the boy?" and shows his patronus, which is the same as Lily's. Supposedly, one has similar patronus only if he feels a very deep affection for the other person.
Snape was a Death Eater, so there was no reason for him to even have a patronus, meaning the fact that he has one and it's same as Lily's indicates that he loved her very very much.
Aaaand I hit the cap again.

14:21
it would be cool to say 'lumos' and point at a light to turn it on
@DaaaahWhoosh Just reprogram one of those Alexa things to turn on the light when you say lumos.
2
that's almost enough to get me to buy one of those Alexa things
@DaaaahWhoosh Why not the Google Home?
I am thinking I want the Google Home in its current incarnation because it can distinguish between people and set up profiles per person. The down side is the Wife is resistant to change and likes using her "phone" (Android) :(
I'm still probably not going to buy one, I haven't even gotten to the product comparison stage yet
I don't get the point of the Google Home type things.
What do you actually use them for?
14:29
@DaaaahWhoosh My opinion is, the rate of change of functionality is extremely high at this time and maybe better to just ... pause of the price is scary.
@Bellerophon That is that is the big question isn't it. The more automated your media is (as in Internet of things) the more you can do. Lights, Temperature etc. Are just a few of 1200+ functions. If those functions are like the 400+ channels on Cable well then most are junk.
@Bellerophon I have been able to improve her quality of life by getting her a Tablet that she can add to, recall etc Recipes and can keep near her when she is doing things and ask it questions for conversions etc. I may be allowed to get it to help her in her selection of seeds to plant and any .... specific schedule they may need.
@EnigmaMaitreya But I can already do any of that on my phone. (Actually I can't because I don't have a smart-phone but that doesn't matter). Why bother getting a really expensive thing to do it. Or in fact, most boilers come with a remote control for temperature and my lights I usually switch on as I enter a room and walk past the switch.
@Bellerophon shrug she makes that argument to me as she squints at her 5.5 inch phone .... if you follow me. the tablet is a 10.1 inch screen
@EnigmaMaitreya So? That is a completely unrelated piece of technology. I still don't understand the reason for a Google Home.
@Bellerophon but just think of all the things you could accomplish if you didn't have to focus mental energy on flipping those light switches
@Bellerophon As I said the "Google Home" class of device is a simple audio version of what I am saying'
14:37
@zabeus But with a light switch I can flick it whilst communicating. I have to stop communicating for a few seconds to turn it on verbally.
true, Google Home/Alexa are really just stepping stones to the future
@EnigmaMaitreya No, the tablet is replacing something that isn't brilliantly functional with something that is more functional. The Google Home is replacing something really functional with something on about a par functionality wise and which is far worse reliability wise.
@Bellerophon Hum, we have an entertainment system that can be daunting for her. I got a Logitech media controller and a Google Tablet. Now for her to be able to use it, the turning on of the right components with the right setting has been reduced. The "Google Home" devices can do that on an audio command basis.
today it's verbal, tomorrow you'll simply need to clap to turn off lights
right now there's just nothing about smart homes that really interests me
I wouldn't actively avoid it or anything, but I wouldn't consider it much of a value add (if I had to choose between two otherwise identical homes)
14:40
@Ixrec I can see the point if you have really bad mobility.

@Ixrec Would you prefer to read e-books or hear audio books?
@Bellerophon ah that is a good point
@EnigmaMaitreya not particularly? a lot of the books I want to read tend to not have those versions anyway
@EnigmaMaitreya It seems tha Goggle Home is more useful the more technology you already have. I think my house is too low tech for Google Home to have many uses, I have a cathode ray tube TV which I have to physically switch wires around to watch DVDs or normal TV.
@Ixrec I like the smell of books and don't have an e-reader ... but it is about seeing something vs hearing something while your doing something else. that was the point of the question.
14:43
yeah for me it's purely an availability thing
if all books on the planet had decent e-book versions, I'd probably prefer e-books
@Bellerophon And there is the divergence, yes your right that class of device wont bring you anything that can justify the cost.
@EnigmaMaitreya I have a radio. It can do CDs and I can plug in an MP3 player.

Q: Short story about a city that teaches human to transcend

Nikia ChaneyI'm looking for a science fiction short story. Humans walk around an empty city that "teaches" them. At the end they transcend into energy? higher beings?

That's 21st century tech. I'm basically at the front of buying new tech.
@Ixrec And I would be an anachronism as I would keep my paper books. I am wanting to .... insulate my wife from the technological rate of change as she .... hum hates technology that she can not understand and she wont actively try to understand it if she gets frustrated
14:47
physical books do have the rather strong advantage that they can't run out of power or lose a network connection or suddenly be taken away by legal issues with some company
@Bellerophon Ah well I use my phone for Music. I talk maybe 20 minutes per month on the phone, send less than 200 messages per month and use less than 1GB out of 5GB per month.
I don't think there's a way to "fix" that short of giving everyone a 3D printer so they can print their e-books
which...wait, that's totally going to happen isn't it
@Ixrec It is also kind of hard to edit them.
I will only convert to e-books when I eventually fill my house with books.
@Ixrec It certainly can
14:49
Which at the rate I have filled up the book shelves will be pretty soon.
@Bellerophon Oh wow another book horder? I have a lot of books.
I need to decide which paper books to get rid of soon :-(
the Dune prequels are at the top of the list, I think

@Derpy tsk tsk. Trolling is not allowed in SE chat. *finger hovers over button* :P
@Ixrec I half remember the animated Hobbit movie.
@zabeus IF you can find them (Library's are a great resource) "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy", Original British Radio Version is excellent as an Audio Book.

@FuzzyBoots And Another Thing
That would be the one. I got a copy from the library and just never got to it.
Honestly, I lost interest a bit in the series after the first three.
I borrowed an all in one copy. Should return it before they move.
The increasingly mis-named trilogy :P
@FuzzyBoots Yeah, the later ones weren't awesome.
Better than Piers Anthony Xanth trilogy... he started a new one with the 28th book in the series. That said, that series was a definite case of series decay, although it wasn't until the double digits that it got really bad for me.
I have a boxed set of the first three and don't plan on getting the others.
The book of Douglas's writings that they published while trying to decide whether to polish up his unfinished manuscript for the latest book was interesting. Adams felt that part of the shift was that he wrote the first books while young, desperate, and broke. Now that he was rich, he just didn't connect to the characters as much.
15:38
That might make for an interesting main site question.
Anyone like this series? "Incarnations of Immortality" - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarnations_of_Immortality I need to get the last and latest one

@Bellerophon doesn't really work with a first-floor flat though

@Gallifreyan Och. Someone beat me to it already. :)
@EnigmaMaitreya I read the first 7. Everything I've heard so far is to avoid the 8th one. Long story short, Anthony's obsession with sex with young girls is front-and-center.
I will freely admit that I never read it myself. By the time I realized it had come out, I'd read the reviews and decided to read elsewhere.
17:06
@Riker is that a snake or a (legless?) lizard?
it's actually an alligator lizard
you just can't see his legs
ah yes, I see that now
the alligator lizard part, not the legs
I did recently learn about legless lizards, though. It got me excited because I thought maybe the HP basilisk was one, which would mean it could close its eyes
I'm going to go back to not being excited about reptiles now
Yay! Reptiles are great.

@DanHulme Yeah, we've run out of reasonable room to keep books so now we just try and put out our pretty, complete sets like Wheel of Time or Harry Potter, and everything else gets hidden behind them on the shelves
17:26

I'm at the piles of books on the floor stage. My flat looks like my parents' house when I was growing up

Is there a question here about "where did R2D2 gets his name?"
I didn't find one. but.... SE search.. not ideal :v
17:42
are you talking in-universe or out-of-universe?
@DaaaahWhoosh either
the out of universe name is reasonably googleable
@DCOPTimDowd ah, that's probably close to the out of universe duplicate
maybe I'll ask the in universe one
@DCOPTimDowd aww, I was about to link that one
17:44
ah, yeah, those seem to cover it more or less
out-of-universe I know it has something to do with... like, film canisters or something
I'll ask my "how old is R2D2" question instead :P
man SE search. why you so bad
3
17:45
definitely didn't find those... and I have nearly 100k network rep. LOL
lol
@enderland I've never had a problem with it as long as I know what I'm looking for (see "picard maneuver")
yeah, that's why I've asked here - I've definitely not read all the questions here
on Workplace I pretty much know what question to look for when I'm searching... makes it easier
I just searched 'r2-d2 name is:question'
@DaaaahWhoosh Pretty much
17:48
ah, I was trying keywords. silly me thinking keywords might make searching easier! lol
it's not as bad as reddit's search at least
it seems to only match words like "the" and "and"
@enderland What keywords other that "r2-d2" and "name" were you using?
lol. not sure it should compete iwth that
@DCOPTimDowd I think I was looking mainly at the titles, most of which aren't really the same as the title I'd have written - which would be "where did R2D2 get his name?" or something
(most of those answers are tangentially related to the question that they are posted to but do answer the name question)
@enderland That happens alot here
on Worldbuilding, whenever I see a question that reminds me of another question, I'll post that question in a comment. That way, I build a web for myself if I ever need to find one of the questions again
and also it might help the OP, but who cares about that
3
17:51
@DaaaahWhoosh I've been considering doing that here
@DaaaahWhoosh I do that on workplace with related questions too
It also helps populate that sidebar full of links

I was just reminded how great the trailer for the first Witcher game was:
It's also slighly baffling that the in-game graphics in Witcher 3 look even better than this pre-rendered trailer.
. . . and I just realised it's been 10 years since this game was released.
Pre-rendered almost always means "looks weird" in my experience. Even in the rare cases when it does "look better" pre-rendered, being different to the main game is still jarring.
Witcher 1 was fun. Much better than Witcher 2, far as I could tell, but maybe because it had a 'remain neutral' option
@DaaaahWhoosh I missed that too. Also the second game had ridiculously high hardware requirements, despite the graphics being not that great ( and I think the gamma was too warm/bright)
@Ixrec Oh, but that's just the trailer. Though the actual game graphics look way weirder.
I've been meaning to go back and finish Witcher 2, but I just can't bring myself to do it. And I can't bring myself to play 3 without knowing how 2 ends.
@DaaaahWhoosh Where did you stop?
19:09
@Gallifreyan there was... some sort of ghost mist. I think I went through it at least once.
@DaaaahWhoosh that's the very beginning, the big battle. There's so much fun stuff to still find out about, go play it!
@DaaaahWhoosh That's sort of near the end of the second chapter.
You have just one more big location and then you're done.
You're around Vergen now.
CDProject REd wanted to reboot the series, with The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf
@Gallifreyan oh, I guess that explains why I got bored everywhere.
I was gonna say, if there's five more places to go to I'll never get to the end
@DaaaahWhoosh Well, there are only 4 total locations in the game - the siege, Flotsam, Vergen, and the fourth one. You're almost there!

@Gallifreyan had you played a Metal Gear game before? =)
@Ixrec No, just this one (I don't have a PS, so...)
20:04
heh, thought so
Oh, and I also tried the latest MGS game that was released for PC.
tiny cyborgs doing impossible things is literally par for the course
you should've seen when Raiden stopped a nuclear submarine dead in its tracks in MGS4
Yeah, I saw a video with him being run over by a ship.
That was easily the best boss I've ever fought.
Rising was fully of great boss fights, I'm not even sure which one was my favorite
And the music - what music!
I think I even had the soundtrack downloaded.
20:11
I have a subset of it on my phone =)
I certainly liked it more than the recent Devil May Cry, though the latter's gameplay was a bit more exciting.
didn't play that one, just not into DMC for some reason
I tried playing the first DMC a long time ago and just couldn't figure out what it wanted me to do
I got introduced to DMC with Devil May Cry 4, and was impressed because I hadn't played a slasher before.
Hm, looks like it's not what they call them in English.
@Gallifreyan It's "hack-and-slash"
@Gallifreyan If you ever go back to the beginning, skip 2. You'll thank me.

@DCOPTimDowd which is much better than slack and hash.

Sorry, I'm a spooner for suckerisms.
I mean, come on: swords with motorbike-like thingies built-in - check! People who defend from gunfire by firing back - check! Female heroes with low cleavage for absolutely no reason - check! A white-haired dude one of whose weapons are roses that explode - check!
@DCOPTimDowd I only played 4 and the new reboot - don't think I'll continue though, unless they make something very interesting plot-wise.
@Gallifreyan I think 3 is definitely worth playing, especially the special edition. I don't remember if any of them are connected story-wise, though. I know 2 isn't. But 3 was an amazing game in general.

Q: Is the Nocturnus song "Subterranean Infiltrator" about Metal Gear, or is it actually set in its universe?

SQBThresholds, the 1992 sophomore release by the progressive death metal band Nocturnus, contains a song "Subterranean Infiltrator", which Wikipedia claims is about the Metal Gear video game series. Listening to the song and reading its lyrics, and having only superficial knowledge of the Metal Gea...

Perhaps one of you gentlemen can answer that for me?
@Gallifreyan 4 has been on my list since it was first announced, but I still have like five unopened games I need to get to first
@SQB I remember this question, and I do think the lyrics resemble the plot of MG
@Gallifreyan see, I love all that stuff thematically and watch anime with it all the time, but for a video game I have to enjoy the gameplay first and foremost

Q: Why Mcnoagall didn't send only Parkinson to the dungeons?

anakindchosenone05192005It always struck me as odd that everyone's favorite house (Slytherin) were seen as not wanting to defend Hogwarts. Despite being sent to the dungeons, later in the movie some of them escaped and fought against Voldemort. Since it was only Pansy Parkinson who entreated someone to grab Harry, wh...

Say, is it me, or do I see a couple of new names in here? Welcome in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe!
@Null not a native speaker, I guess.
I think I've seen a new name or two almost every day
it's like we're in a completely different chatroom or something

@SQB Don't you mean Milliways?
@Ixrec I think it feels that way even without newbies
I've certainly learned about more mods in these ~4 days than in the previous 8 months.

@Gallifreyan Are they the ones in the blue?
@DCOPTimDowd Yep. Blue name means moderator, italicized name means room owner.

Except on mobile, there's something with the stylesheet.
Has that been reported as a bug yet?
dunno, not sure it matters given the general state of the mobile apps and site
@SQB Are you talking about the mobile app or the mobile site?
the mobile app doesn't have chat
confusingly

Q: Children's book from elementary school

Gail CarucciI too have a question about a book I would have read in 4th grade or 5th grade. (1966-1967) Vaguely remember but it was about a machine that you inserted a piece of paper with a question and after making several noises the machine spit out the answer. I remember that a fellow classmate and I made...

^ @Ixrec I liked that song from MGR:R. from the battle with the French woman, Mistral.
@Gallifreyan A Stranger I Remain, yeah (derp, didn't notice the video you linked already had the title, oh well)
that one and the two songs from Armstrong's boss fights are probably my favorites
And the timing, when the vocal part kicks in with a cutscene? That was awesome!
21:55
@Ixrec more confusingly it has chat notifications but no chat (...yet?)
at least those notifications correctly link to chat so they aren't useless
That's enough computer for me for today. Good night!

Q: Story ID - The Dragon in the Well

Vector GorgothWritten before 1995 in all likelihood; certainly before 2000. The cover may have depicted a painting of a dragon a wall, but I am not certain. The story, as best I can recall, is that there are a boy and a girl; the boy is ill-tempered and a trouble-maker. Very early in the story they visit an o...

Q: 2 books, Missing Mars Civilization and Human Modified by 3 dif alien species

TalosI became an avid sci-fi reader my sophomore year in high school. My school library had a fair collection but since I was not buying books back then I was a bit lax in recalling book names and their authors. That came later. Anyway, I returned to my old high school almost 20 years later in order t...

Q: Looking for Sentient Tree Short Story

CrysSeeking a short story I read in a collection at least 5 or 6 years ago, can't trace the name or origin. Please help! Here's what I remember: Race of sentient trees (looks like a normal forest to us). One way they communicate is by changing the colour of their leaves. One is taken by the humans a...
