Q: Identify story about uploaded person

Glenn WillenI remember reading a story, probably posted online, about a person who was uploaded (i.e. had his consciousness transferred into a computer.) I don't recall whether it was more like short story or novel length, and I don't know whether it was ever published in a non-online medium. I think the pro...

Q: SciFi novel about a portal/hole (possibly in the desert) from which random objects appear

Squawk_box_22I want to say this could be anywhere from the 80's to the early 2000's. I believe the portal was in the desert in the US, and the government built a facility around it. Objects from the portal were unlike any technology/substance known to humans. The only specific object I remember was a super d...

Q: First story with a portal to a distant location?

releseabeI believe the idea of teleportation or extremely fast movement is very old. "Seven League Boots" and probably inexplicable movement to a distant place effected by a geni or demon. I am interested in a doorway etc. into another distant place with ideally a non-magical explanation but even a magica...

Q: Genesis Planet Sunlight

Alan Orlichokay. I went to Google to look up the Genesis planet was was receiving a glow of natural sunlight from... somewhere, when all the matter of the nebula was consumed and used as material to create the planet. I wonder if anyone has tried blocking IP addresses.
14:59
I might get annoyed by these voting buttons and override them client-side again. This time the problem is that the already voted button is too similar to the normal one.
@b_jonas I already did that. (I'm using the Stylus plug-in, and someone posted the necessary CSS to one of the meta posts.)
@Spencer I don't know if you can create that many accounts that fast without some form of VPN or other IP-masking.
15:17
"You can only flag for moderator attention 11 times per day" what? I'm flagging for spam, not for moderator attention.
@b_jonas That seems low? But IIRC all flags are lumped together.
@DavidW it's on askubuntu.com where I only have 221 rep so it makes sense. if anyone cares there are five new spam questions, plus answers
AU is getting hit with spam, presumably since the news is out about some mods going on strike
I believe I can flag more here on Sci Fi where I have lots of rep.
@b_jonas I see 7 spam there now, wow.
15:20
@TheLethalCarrot yes, so I heard. but spam can be deleted without diamond mods.
@b_jonas The formula is something like min(100, 12 + rep/2000 + helpful flags/10)
is any other site (besides Ask Ubuntu and SO) hit?
@b_jonas Sure, just takes longer, especially with Smokey on strike too
@b_jonas No idea, probably
@TheLethalCarrot Looks about the same rate as usual.
@Mithical Ah fair enough, I've never been there before and seen people mention the spam today so I did an SE and put 2 and 2 together to make 49673
15:22
Yeah, it's just taking much longer for it get removed
it changes from one minute to another because spam gets deleted quickly
if it happens on any other site, tell me, I probably have flags remaining elsewhere.

Q: Short story where a woman steals kettles, pots, and pans in a purse that can't possibly fit them

DavidWThis is a classic story and I'm ashamed not to remember the name; unfortunately I haven't been able to remember enough unique details to find it either. The story begins with a security person at a store watching a woman shoplifting pots and kettles and such, basically anything metal. What's par...

Q: What were the Minbari plans if they hadn't surrendered at the battle of the line?

Martin TournoijThe Minbari surrendered at the battle of the line, but what were their plans if they hadn't surrendered and won? Up to this point the war itself resulted in relatively few casualties – about 250,000 – so most people are still alive. Would they simply leave? Establish a colony? Enslavement? Genoci...

Q: Book about female main character named Juniper

Tired. Adulting is hard. Puppies are better 😁
There's an almost-in order summary here and below v

Moved out of my 1-bedroom studio to love with my partner, lived through a big big BIG reorganisation at work, ran through dozens of board games with my partner, got married, bought a house, almost ended up homeless because the notary office screwed up big time, lived through another reorganisation at work,
How about you? :)
Ooooh (belated) congrats on getting married and the house!
Thanks :)
To be honest a lot of the same as last time, still chugging along... now the only developer at my company (along with my boss) as the others left. We got an apprentice briefly but he just wasn't getting it so didn't stay for long. Waiting on my boss deciding to hire again
So worn out at work, and hay fever season is upon me so not helping
20:56
Aw, sorry to hear that :(
Hiring delayed because of budget reasons or other stuff? I'd expect a (former?) developer to understand that going from several Devs to 2 (1.5? 1.25?) devs just doesn't cut it
On the positive Stella is still a big goof ball and me and the wife just recently celebrated our 4 year anniversary :)
Congrats πŸŽ‰
@Jenayah There were 2 others when I started and now just me. I think just a timing thing cos he wants to do another apprentice and we have a big project coming up where we probably can't devote the time... not that I think it's a good enough reason to wait but hey ho
πŸ˜•
Obvious question, are you considering changing jobs?
It's higher on my mind than it ever has been
21:03
Then again, if it has never been, it's kind of an obvious answer πŸ˜„
The problem is for the most part it's a good job with decent perks and close to home (and now also 2 days WFH). I don't think I'd like it too much if where I moved to was too corporate
I get the feeling
(see transcript above)
(without the remote work though, I still hate remote work 🀣)
My wife works from home full time so I quite like it but I get it could be quite isolating
21:18
Back during my studies I already was not a big fan of studying at home, spent years staying at the school till late night to work on assignments rather than at home, then this happened:
May 19, 2020 at 9:51, by Jenayah
If the 2018 summer internship taught me anything, it's that I thoroughly hate remote work. Covid only made it even clearer (without even talking about the moving it situation). Glad to be identified as one of the "needs to be on site permanently from now" folks. :)
I will admit I like Fridays (apart from the obvious) because that's when me and my boss are both in the office together and I get more than a passing interaction with folks
Though it is also hard at the moment because we're pretty much exclusively working individually
Oh and obviously. The one time I had to do remote work was when I had Covid, and this happened precisely when I was supposed to begin a week of testing of a feature I'd spend three weeks developing, on a machine that was absolutely not reachable from home
Fun times
Ah of course! That's never going to help you towards liking it
@TheLethalCarrot to be honest, while I don't like working remotely myself, I do enjoy some others being in remote work πŸ˜… Wednesdays and Fridays are pretty quiet, and these days are the best days to thoroughly test stuff hand-in-hand with QA or POs, design complex stuff, and have the chillest "in the know" coffee breaks of the week :)
Haha making the most of a quieter office, I like it
21:28
@xkcd oh hey that was pretty much my partner and 3D printing :)

Q: Movie with a scene where a robot hunter (I think) tells another person during dinner that you can recognize a cyborg by the creases in their fingers

SeanThe cop or cyborg hunter tells another person how you can recognize a cyborg/robot. The waitress in the dinner shows her hands and they have deep creases in the area behind the knuckles (I think), proving she's a robot. I think the movie was made in or around the '80s. The hunter may (I'm not sur...

Q: 1980s serialized novel in Analog about an alien planet named something like Midanoa
