Q: LOTR: How to Pronounce Elanor

automatonA different question than normal here, but I could think of no better place! How is Elanor - the flower from Lorien and Sam's daughter- pronounced? Like the name Eleanor (EL-ah-noor), or something more like eh-LAY-noor, with the tonic syllable in the middle?? Would appreciate any direct canon sou...

Q: Sci-Fi moderators on AI content strike

AncientSwordRageAs some of you may be aware a new policy came into effect recently, whereby moderators network wide were told to not moderate new content on the site solely on the basis of it being AI generated. If not, here is an article about the situation to catch you up to speed. And while this is more of a ...

Q: What’s the name of the book series about a woman who is almost immortal and who breeds like a mole rat?

TonyFrom memory, the first book concerns a girl who is kinda weird but strangely attractive. Men find her irresistible and she bears only daughters. Her offspring are sterile and she is basically a human queen bee or mole rat. She lives for many years and the story is set in our world. I think that s...

Huh, I didn't know that Smoke Detector was also on strike.

3:16 PM
Oh, I noticed that yesterday. We got at least a dozen posts from our famous troll, and smokey didn't comment here about any of them.
I feel a bit guilty about not actively supporting the strike, but on the other hand it seems worse to leave the troll droppings fouling the site.

(Hmm. Is "actively" the correct adverb when the "action" is inaction?)
In happier news, I just finished rereading Hardwired (Walter Jon Williams, 1986), which I hadn't re-read since the 1990s.
There's a bit of Zeerust there, obviously, but it's still a fun read. WJW can definitely write a cracking good story.

@DavidW Well to be fair there's only ASR on the mod team striking

@DavidW Some moderators who are striking are around and will handle egregious content they see. Staff are also picking up the worst of the flags on some sites

Q: Streamlined spaceship designs in a frictionless vacuum

LuckyWhy are sci-fi spaceships so swoopy? For example, in the Babylon 5 universe the Minbari and Shadow ships are an agglomeration or relatively thin planes. In Star Trek, Federation and Romulan ships are generally flattened shapes connected by relatively thin beams or platforms. In space, there is no...
