Q: Why did Super Friends change the Darkseid's "Boom Tube" to a "Stargage"?

BuzzAs a kid, I started reading the original New Gods comics around the same time Darkseid first appeared on the Super Friends television cartoons. One of the peculiar differences I noticed between the comics and the show (I could see why the roles of Kalibak and Desaad were different for the cartoo...

Q: 1950s short story where natives of an alien planet "help" humans solve problems, with each solution creating a bigger problem

Ann SpencerThis story was in a 1950s anthology of classic sci-fi stories. The aliens are friendly, and recommend planting a certain hedge, I think, to solve a problem. When the hedge becomes a problem, they recommend a solution that in turn creates a bigger problem, until ultimately the humans find the plan...

Q: Wouldn't Miller's planet be fried by blue shifted radiation?

blademan9999In Interstellar, wouldn't Miller's planet be fried by blue shifted radiation? The 61,000x time dilation multiplier would make even cosmic background radiation photons into Extreme UV photons.

Q: Did you see Luke and Biggs on Tatooine at one of the 1977 screenings of Star Wars ("A New Hope")?

PeteI saw Star Wars in the theater seven times during 1977 and know for a fact that I saw the scene of Luke and Biggs on Tatooine on the big screen during the first showing that I ever saw. I also clearly remember noting that the scene was not in any subsequent screenings that I saw that year. Folks...

Q: Do we know if Gollum/Sméagol was called to the Halls of Mandos?

John RennieMy understanding is that the second Children of Ilúvatar are called to Mandos when they die and then move ... elsewhere. I think this applies to all men, halflings, etc and the only way to avoid it is not to die (which Gollum managed for a while). Also I think all second children move on, unlike ...

@Marvin I think this question is on topic. It's asking for a scientific explanation within the Interstellar universe.

A: What is our actual policy on science questions?

KutuluMikeIn-Universe Explanations — Even Based On Real Science — Are On-Topic Any question that is asking for an answer within the context of a fictional universe, even if that question requires real-world science information, is on-topic. We should not expect content creators to spell out every detail ...

An answer could be as simple as "yes, this is a plot hole, this wasn't addressed in the film."

Q: Did Sauron ever consider that the Valar and/or Eru Ilúvatar may not allow him to conquer Middle-earth?

user57467I am wondering if there is anything mentioned in LOTR canon that Sauron had once given thought to the possibility that the Valar and/or Eru Ilúvatar may not allow him to conquer Middle-earth, and due to this possibility, that it may not be worth it for him to try to do so. During the Second Age, ...

@SQB I agree with this comment left by Valorum. From a strictly in-universe perspective, the planet in question evdently wasn't being fried by radiation, so the in-universe answer to the actual question asked is a simple "no". Only by sidelining the in-universe evidence, and deferring to real world science instead, will you get a different answer.

SQB
Okay, but "it should be, right?" implies "why isn't it?" to me.

11:24 AM
@SQB "It should be" according to what? To me, that seems like a clear reference to real world science, with the question effectively asking us to prioritise that over in-universe evidence. The question directly references real world science (not mentioned within the movie transcript) as a justification for its position: "The 61,000x time dilation multiplier would make even cosmic background radiation photons into Extreme UV photons."

Q: How does the lightsaber rifle work?

RYAN LANDELSFrom what limited things I’ve seen on the internet, the lightsaber rifle consumes lightsabers as ammunition. I don’t know exactly which comics it’s in, but I know Jocasta Nu uses it against Vader, but her lightsaber is drained of power before Vader is hit. Is there any sources that explain how th...

Q: Story about a murder that leads to an execution; turns out to be suicide

CIAndrewsI read a story once about a murder, where the killer got caught and executed. After the execution, a video (I think) was released showing that the first murder was suicide. I believe that both the 'victim' and the 'killer' were terminally ill and decided to show that dead penalties are wrong, bec...

Q: Working backwards from "Delete the people, keep the math and jazz." (SciFi short story)

uhohI'm a great lover and a modest consumer of the short story genre. But I've precious little experience writing fiction.
