Q: Semaphore system used between communities

AlithI was reading some posts earlier today on our sister site Worldbuilding. In particular this question which discussed how an empire could communicate between cities/communities remotely. The question jogged a very faint memory of a story that I read around 10-15 years ago which had a similar sys...

During this period, it was expanded from a region close to the galactic nucleus, until it occupied half of the galaxy. Why and what are the reasons for a republic that has millions of sentient species, m...

Q: Why did they send Ward in to capture Lorelei

Q: Short story about painters erasing a neighborhood

christine briccettiI don't remember much about this story. I think I read it in the late 80s, but it could have been old at that time. It's about a group of house painters that are re-painting a neighborhood but as they do it the houses disappear. I think it's told from the perspective of a couple in one of the hou...

Q: What is alt text, and how do I write good alt text?

KevinWhen I upload an image, the image button inserts some text that says "enter image description here". What is that text for, and what should I replace it with?

Presumably

@Gallifreyan ...something that accurately describes the image. Enough so that if the image is not visible, the post is understandable with just the alt text.

I have 11 apparently

you can probably edit it so that that field can be set when running the query instead of having to edit the query itself

You can, use ##userid## I think
I was being lazy
Could also edit it so it groups on user id and get the count for each user but again... lazy

A: How did River Tam end up in Alliance hands between the series and movie

Nautatava NavlakhaIn Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Ch. 22): At once, Harry's scar burned white-hot, as though the old wound had burst open again - and unbidden, unwanted, but terrifyingly strong, there rose within Harry a hatred so powerful he felt, for that instant, he would like nothing better t...

Q: What do we know about the dog that Harry stepped on the tail of? I don't believe that it was a bulldog

J. MiniAs of the first three chapters of Prisoner of Azkaban, we know the following: Aunt Marge breeds bulldogs. As she's in England and they're described as fairly big, they're probably English bulldogs. Furthermore, as she's a professional breeder, they're probably fairly normal dogs. In other words...

Q: Book Identification: Sci-Fi, pre-1985 - Childrens(ish?) book series about a boy who lived next door to an old scientist

Phil McCartyWhen I say this series has been haunting me for a couple of decades, it's an understatement. I remember loving this series, but I also remember it being a bit weird, and maybe even a bit science heavy for kids. There were a number of books in it (I believe), and all I can remember is this young ...

tinyatomBack in the day I had to read a story from the "recommended" books section and I chose this. @TheLethalCarrot But the image still says Park not Bark?

I was being lazy
Made for a family quiz, the film name was blurred out, I just couldn't be bothered to change it to Bark to post here :)

OK, this shows a weird comment formatting bug. I typed OMNI and it otalicized the letters, but kept the first underscore.

Two underscores?

@Spencer Did you correctly end the underscore after the previous title?
Note how everything between the two titles is also in italics.

@RandAlThor I saw that and almost added a comment to the post.
@DavidW D'oh

@TheLethalCarrot As a kid I had the canine version of Monopoly, with different dog breeds instead of streets, and Free Barking on one corner.

Looks like they weren't being lazy :P

4:07 PM
@TheLethalCarrot I didn't even notice the discrepency

Aye, the main point is Stella on it instead of the dinosaur. Changing to Bark would have been nice but meh

I would have thought that to be what really makes the joke round.
Though, you at least saying it in the accompanying message helped to mitigate that.

It wasn't really for the joke, more cos it looked funny and made me chuckle.. the joke was an afterthought
Like there's 10 others that don't all have "pun potential"

@TheLethalCarrot Which jokes normally don't? ;-)
(Being funny and making you chuckle, that is.)

Jokes should make you think and contemplate the meaning of life of course
Who laughs at jokes?
Weirdos

4:17 PM
Well, maybe it could be seen as an extreme animal rights statement for how dogs are as much artificially created through human-engineered breeding as the cloned dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.

What about this one...?

Wow, almost as huge as a...dinosaur.

Never seen a bassett? That chunk would barrel you over and not even notice :P

Couldn't you have kept Lady Gaga and replaced Bradley Cooper instead?

The wife did that one
She is a girl though after all

4:21 PM
Though, I guess a guitar playing dog is another level of photoshopping.

Unless you just did the head of course

Q: Einstein "quantum leaps" into young Japanese girl

Darrel HoffmanI recall a short story I read in the 80's or 90's (might be older than that). The premise is that Albert Einstein (pretty sure it was him, might've been another scientist associated with the Manhattan Project) is racked with guilt about his involvement, and spends the rest of his life secretly t...

5:06 PM
@Marvin One'd think that should be easy to find as it's so specific, but I'm getting nothing. Beginning to suspect it wasn't Einstein but someone else.

5:56 PM
My gut feeling was immediately that it wasn't likely Einstein; his involvement was too peripheral.

I did some searching - more focused around Feynman, but also Einstein and just general "scientist" - and came up with nothing.

Elliot RochaMany years ago I read a story of a man who experimented with a magnet strapped to his forehead. From what I remember, he examined this experiment in his attic study. Chris JohnsonThis is from an dystopian anthology I read in the early 1970's. The world is run-down and brutal, reminiscent of Soylent Green / Make Room Make Room. Chris JohnsonThis is from a dystopian anthology I read in the early 1970's. Humans encounter a friendly alien race that shares advanced technologies.
