Q: Why didn’t Húrin answer Morwen as she was dying?

FivesideddiceIn The Children of Húrin by Tolkien (and his son), Húrin was bound by the power of Morgoth to a stone chair on a high place on Thangorodrim. He is later released after both Niënor and Túrin commit suicide, Niënor by casting herself over Cabed-en-Aras into the river Teiglin, and Túrin falling on h...

Q: In Harry Potter, what year did Hermione Granger start working at the Ministry?

user127432In Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and many quotes from J.K. Rowling, I think Hermione Granger starts to work at the Ministry in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, becomes the deputy Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and eventually becomes Minis...

Q: Did the fans deduce the identity of R.A.B. before Deathly Hallows was published?

b_jonasIn Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince chapter 28, Harry finds a note telling that someone has obtained the Dark Lord's locket Horcrux from the cave before Professor Dumbledore and Harry got there. The note has no full name, only the initials “R.A.B.”. In Deathly Hallows chapter 10, we find ...

Q: Was Sauron aware of the prophecy that Smaug would be killed and that the Dwarves would reclaim Erebor?

user255577I was wondering if there is any mention in Tolkien's Legendarium that Sauron knew about the prophecy that Smaug would be killed and that the Dwarves would then reclaim Erebor. If so, I was thinking perhaps this may be the reason why Sauron never bothered to travel to the Lonely Mountain to ask Sm...

Q: In Harry Potter, does the Permanent Sticking or Sticking Charm work on the spell Flagrate?

user127432We know that the spell Flagrate allows the caster to draw with their wand, but the drawing disappears after just a little bit of time. If you are to use the Flagrate spell on a surface (e.g. Hermione Granger in OoTP) and you want it to permanently stick or just stick (e.g. Maybe you want to draw ...

Q: Does the Fire to Snake spell only work on an elongated fire?

Kyle VDoes the Fire to Snake spell only work on an elongated fire? On the two instances we saw them being used, the fire's shape was longer than it was wide. In Dumbledore's duel with Voldemort, Dumbledore ensnared Voldemort with a fiery rope, and most or all ropes are longer than they are wide. In Mc...

Q: Short story or novella about a guy who keeps getting infected but doesn't die from any of them

Timothy CallahanI’m going crazy trying to remember this science fiction story about a guy who is kinda like Typhoid Mary. He has been exposed to hundreds of deadly pests, but didn’t die himself. He just gets more scarred with pock marks, hardened and immune. But - he can infect everybody else. So he wanders arou...

@Jenayah About scifi.stackexchange.com/revisions/217326/4; isn't about the linked sequence of stories, not just the character?

@DavidW I dunno. The question linked to the Wikipedia character page.
Is it also the name of the saga? I can see it being the title of a single novel in the Wikipedia disambiguation, but lack the expertise beyond that
If you think it needs a franchise tag, go ahead. Again, I lack knowledge here

The "Eternal Champion" - ignoring the trilogy by that name - is more of a rôle than a character; (almost?) all of Moorcock's heroes fill that rôle at some point, so it's a shorthand way to refer to Elric, Corum, Cornelius, Hawkmoon, etc.

So, character tag

Let me look at what tags exist for Moorcock's works.

Or in-universe concept tag, which isn't much better
cf and friends...

2:28 PM
Well, it's mostly a way to tie a bunch of series-distinct but thematically-related novels together. It's kinda like a relative to , etc.

m'kay
what's the commonly acknowledged franchise name?

I've always heard the Elric series, the Chronicles of Corum, the History of the Runestaff, etc. collectively referred to as the "Eternal Champion" novels.

@DavidW result of your investigation? :)

I see that Wikipedia is using the term "Moorcockian Multiverse"

-_- that doesn't help us...

2:33 PM
I see questions tagged that should have work, not author tags...
So this is going to take some sorting out. It'll have to wait until after work, I think.

5/15 stopping edits :)
@DavidW okay!

May need to create a few series tags, like .

Q: Science fiction book from the 70's(?) about viruses

Sean ReadIn high school in the 70's, we read a science fiction book that, in many of the opening chapters, the characters recounted a history of things, referred to only by unintelligible strings of letters and numbers, that were killing people. A fair way into the book it is revealed that these things we...

Q: Short story about astronauts returning from space and going crazy on earth

sfissI am looking for a short story that is probably really old (30 years+) and I only remember the rough plot like this: Several astronauts (I think it was multiple, but possibly it could have been only one) are returning from their trip to space. After having seen the stars, life on earth seems bor...

Q: IS Mephisto susceptible to Holy Weapons in the Marvel Universe?

RusshiroThough only familiar with him through Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, and that atrocious Spider Man story (Sorry; I know we can all go one more day without speaking on that), as a kid, I envisioned Memphisto as a clearly more "diabolical brain" villain than one having any major raw power. Q: Can Rogue's mutant siphoning power sustain her, or does she need to eat?

RusshiroThe X-Man Rogue's central ability is bio-energy absorption via tactile contact on her skin. Done for too long on another being, she can absorb their "life energy", and in the case of other super beings, keep their powers permanently, as she did with Carol Danvers. As this is a form of bio-energy...

Q: Strange book where teen protagonist is sent to a warzone, uses illusory magic to grow male genitalia

LampreyNot sure how else to word that, this book popped back into my head just the other day and all the details I remember are odd. @Jenayah You've ridden herd on newbies before. What's the best channel to (gently) poke DrSheldon with suggestions for better reviewing? (At least adding the and tags should have been done in review.)

8:52 PM
@DavidW I'd say something along the lines of
> Hey @reviewer, friendly nudge to ensure your reviews serve the site better - this one certainly needed XYZ tags/formatting corrections/title rewrite etc;
> as the purpose of First Posts reviews is to provide guidance to new users, it's better to fix everything in their post and point them in the right direction (policies...).
> When in doubt, you can always skip. Don't want to sound authoritative or something, but this is how I think we make the site better. I'm open to discussion in chat if you want to talk about it further
With a link to the specific review if the reviewer can't be pinged (didn't edit...) and thus has to be reached from elsewhere (commenting on one of their posts)
Though on this specific case you might want to take extra gloves 'cause the user has 20k rep somewhere else on the network, so maybe they're used to review a certain way and would see the above as patronizing, etc

9:12 PM
@Jenayah Ah, that's what I was missing - a way to ping them.
@Jenayah Oh, that's also good to know! I'm glad you noticed that.

9:33 PM
@DavidW well you want to avoid sounding patronizing when reaching out for what is still a critic of a user you don't know, so better to stalk study the situation first

Q: What popularized the idea of "green" radioactive materials in media?

A. W.I recently learned about Cherenkov Radiation which produces an eerie blue glow, such as when viewing a nuclear reactor submerged in water. This effect was known about as early as the 1930's.
