John FaurboI know that this quote exists, i just don't know who said it or the specific language. The TV Tropes article "Lightspeed Leapfrog" (Warning: TV Tropes is a time sink black hole) has a great deal of examples, but not that exact quote.
It's "real life example" points to the concept of the wait calculation on Wikipedia, which in turn points to my first link.
> **Abstract:**
> This paper describes an incentive trap of growth that shows that civilisations may delay interstellar exploration as long as voyagers have the reasonable expectation that whenever they set out growth will continue to progress and find quicker means of travel, overtaking them to reach and colonise the destination before they do. This paper analyses the voyagers' wait calculation, using the example of a trip to Barnard's Star, and finds a surprising minimum to time to destination at a given rate of growth that affects the expansion of all civilisations. Using simple equation

GonzoSci-fi/time traveller cartoon from the early to mid 2000's. The plot goes like this: A time traveler was in some sort of training mission. Whilst he was on this mission he witnesses this girl that was going to get killed (I think this was taking part during the French Revolution). He saves the ...

Q: How do Eldar communicate without line of sight

ShadeAccording to the Eldar Lexicon entry, the language depends highly on non-verbal communication: This is largely because, as noted above, the Aeldari language is not actually comprised of words alone like human languages, but also accompanied by a detailed set of poses and gestures. The way an ...

After death she finds herself alone in a pavilion on an island where she heals and then an Asian man appears to help her on h...

Q: Is the producers' choice of language off topic?

Vogon PoetIf someone asks why a film was produced in English instead of Japanese (for example only), is that considered "behind the scenes" or is it off topic?

Q: Does each house in Hogwarts have its own anthem?

PanchoaAfter seeing this question: Does Hogwarts have its own anthem? I was wondering if each house in Hogwarts has its own anthem? I know Slytherin wrote the song "Weasley is our King" but can we consider it as an anthem? In my opinion I don't think it is but I'm wondering a bit about this.

Q: Is it Ethical or Legal to Weaponize Tribbles?

Vogon PoetOstensibly Star Trek stands behind animal rights, yet Starfleet has deployed tactical tribbles against the Klingons at least one time. I question the ethics and legality of this weapon. One online reference with unknown credibility cites a Starfleet General Order 19 which appears to make tribb...

I remember @Randal'Thor being unhappy how the CinemaSins channel sucks the joy out of every film they touch. I'm happy to announce there's a polar opposite channel called CinemaWins

Yes, that existed for a long time too and is a much more positive alternative.
I wouldn't hazard a guess if that was in any way more towards his taste, though, let alone that he's genuinely looking for an alternative.

Q: In Thundercats [1986] is the Sword of Omens magical on its own, or empowered by the Eye of Thundera?

Russ RainfordClarifying something: Within the classic Thundercats universe, is the Sword of Omens itself a magical item that was further empowered by the Eye of Thundera? OR... Is the sword itself no more than a weaponized conduit, with all powers then attributed to the Eye? The series seemed to give diff...

Q: Have we ever seen Odo impersonate another humanoid?

DarrenOdo, the security chief on Deep Space Nine, is a shapeshifter and seemingly adept at impersonating furniture, rats and other small animals. He does make a comment about finding it difficult to impersonate a Bajoran nose, we do we ever see him attempt (however successfully) to impersonate anothe...

Q: Questions about in-world legality and ethicality are primarily opinion-based?

Vogon PoetThe legal governance of any reality, and the ethical concepts of that reality, I do not believe are a matter of opinion. Pedantically, you can say how we "out here" (the audience) feel about the ethics in a story are opinions but that is not what was asked. Asking for canon governance on use of ...

Q: YA Book about two children who are turned into a manta/sting ray and a large bird

Lewis GoddardI am trying to find a book that I believe I read as a child, but I think is older than me. Either that or it's a really vivid fever dream. In it, two children finds themselves on an island, shipwreck or plane crash I think, and are imprisoned in a kind of apartment by a scientist. I distinctly r...

Q: Why do Klingons have four nostrils in 2255?

Vogon PoetThis is not related to the Loque'eque mutagenic virus, by any reference I can find. That mutation is covered in this question, which took 30 years to explain the affliction which made Klingons look almost human in the late 23rd century. Yet now a different change - they have lost their hair and g...

Vogon PoetIn Voyager Lifesigns Vidian Danara Pel beamed aboard Voyager with advanced phage. Transporters normally "clean up" organisms before rematerializing then, so bacteria, viri, and even toxins are removed through the transporter biofilters. How did the phage escape the biofilters?
