Q: Science Fiction Novel from the 70's (I think)

James MathersI remember a novel I read ages ago and am looking for its name. The story starts with the death of our characters wife and he cannot get over it. So he sells everything and buys some land and builds a vault so he can put himself into suspended animation for 50 years. He believes that if the worl...

Q: Help! I need help finding a long lost book

Njo216I read a novel when I was a teenager and my sister and I can't remember the title or author. The only things I remember about the book were: I believe it was a fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal romance YA novel in the early to mid 90s... It was about a girl that moved in with her bachelor uncle (in Scotl...

Q: How do the surviving Asgardians get to Earth?

Michael SternIn Thor: Ragnarok, many Asgardians are killed; all surviving members of the race that we know of escape on a space ship. At the start of Avengers: Infinity War we see that they were almost immediately intercepted by Thanos, who slaughters many and blows up their ship. In Avengers: Endgame, it is ...

An example of why Quora sucks is this question
Top answer is completely not answering the question at all
Three of the four answers are saying why they like one over the other, the other is anecdotal evidence. None of them have the statistics asked for.

Q: Archeologists Time Travel to King Arthur Times

WeezyI remember reading a book about a group of archeologists who are on a dig, they find a building, and they end up traveling back to what I believe was Arthurian times by way of something they found. Does this sound familiar?

DaveInCaz This validation error seems wrong. I tried to add a 5th tag only, not more than 5. I tried both the mobile site and the desktop site in a mobile browser, same result.

Q: Looking for the Song that Ended Warehouse 13 Season 4

JeepedI'm binge-watching Warehouse 13 and my google-fu cannot identify this song that helps to end season 4. The tune is/was a powerful feminine drumbeat when Claudia dismisses her best friends and marches back into the Warehouse to meet her oppressor. The chorus seems to to run with You are the...

Q: Horror manga about a killer teacher?

Mocco Is HereI'm looking for a manga about this teacher (I think he was a guidance counselor and English teacher?) He pretends to be nice and he even goes to parent’s houses to discuss what can be done about issues. He's very calculating, and if someone doesn't listen to reason/warnings, then he kills them. ...

Q: Why does this one soldier wear a face mask?

AdamantIn Arthdal Chronicles, one of Tagon's Daeken soldiers, since the very start of the series, constantly wears a black face mask that covers their mouth and nose, which I would imagine might render it uncomfortable to breathe. None of the other soldiers have anything remotely similar. This is a se...

Q: Can a Hogwarts student refuse the Sorting Hat decision?

I am not asking about the process when students can say what th...

@Alex in Hebrew which way do numbers go?
Is it like
000,000,1
Or is it 1,000,000?
@Jenayah what did it say?

@Stormblessed It said "Don't worry about me, I am deleted for a reason so people don't have to read it. Instead focus on something that will make you smile and move away from this crap."

@Stormblessed They're written like in English. Of course, traditionally, those numerals weren't used at all...

Anyway, I thought the punchline would be a nucular cloud, which would already have been a bit clichéd. But that's just...utterly lame. Maybe the point was subverting expectations?
Or maybe Mr. Munroe thinks his audience doesn't have the minimum feel for recursion. ;-)

@Stormblessed In old Hebrew they would use words (or letters) instead of numeric characters. When they use numeric characters in modern Hebrew they go left to right.

Does the last part get dropped from this comment if the user has enough reputation?

As far as I'm aware no, the canned responses are just that... canned

Like canned breakfast meat.

@Stormblessed Yes.

Or canned heat.

There's a different canned comment for LQP queue posts when they have 50+ rep.

@Mithrandir good programming

@Stormblessed hat's a thing? -_-
@TheLethalCarrot your edit you responsibility :P
be back later

@Jenayah Yeah, they tend to go on your head.

7:30 PM
@Mithrandir That seems... risky... Though I did sometimes grab my dog's tongue when he yawned at me. (Though he quickly wised up, so it only worked about 3 times.)

Dogs are smart, though.

Mmmmm are they though?

I should note I wasn't mean about it. As soon as he got from "WTF?!" to "Hey, give that back!" I let go.

@TheLethalCarrot Well, as opposed to people.

@Mithrandir That's true
Although I suppose my in laws' dog likes to push the boundaries when she constantly walks into things head first
Is that door open? Let me try by walking full speed head first at it and seeing!

7:35 PM
How old is she?

Oh she's youngish and has always done it
She's just a moomin
Not like she's blind if that's what you're getting at

@Mithrandir I can only really speak for him, but no trick I ever tried ever worked more than 3 times at most.

Teaching tricks to a dog is breed and dog specific
I once tried teaching my dog to roll over, he was great at other tricks, just couldn't work out what I was asking him to do
My other dog, who had never done roll over before, sat watching for over an hour
Eventually she got up stared at him, rolled over and got back on the sofa and laid down
First dog then knew how to roll over haha
She is really smart, even for a dog though

7:54 PM
@Mithrandir Yeah...no.

8:11 PM
@TheLethalCarrot Oh teaching him tricks is one thing; he's learned lots of tricks. It's when you to fake him out - he'll never fall for a fake throw now after the first few times he got tricked. There's no trick that will get him to go downstairs for his bath of his own volition.
And he always knows when it's bath time, even if the b-a-t-h word is never spoken.

8:31 PM
Oh yeah they’re very quick on picking up that sort of stuff haha

Q: Movie with a girl/fairy who was talking to a unicorn in a snow covered forest

some kid i guessI watched this movie some time in what was probably 2010 or 11 on Netflix. I keep randomly remembering it and every time I search for it, I can't find it. I don't know what it was called, but I remember a bit about the movie itself. I remember there was a girl (may or may not have been a fairy) ...

What Zelazny stuff is good? I’ve heard a lot about him but never read any

@Stormblessed Most of it is really good, but my default recommendation is always Lord of Light.
In general, though, his later stuff doesn't measure up. As in, read the first set of Amber novels (assuming you like the first one), but you can give the second set a pass.
Basically everything up to Doorways in the Sand is automatically worth a read. I don't really recall Bridge of Ashes so it wasn't impressive enough to stick with me.

9:33 PM
The library system here has so much incorrect info on books
It says Lord of Light is from 2004
@DavidW I’ve placed it on hold ;-)
One volume of White Sand is credited as being written by Brandon Sanderson, while the other two are credited to the coauthor

Q: How do the Ood electrocute people

AshterothiIn Doctor Who the Ood use their translation devices to kill people through electrocution. So how are the Ood using ...
