Q: Story about tricking the earth empire into saving hopeless aliens

TextGeekI'm hoping to identify an SF story (read it at least 20 years ago, I think), where Earth has set up a base on a distant world, and when the locals see how advanced they are, they quietly give up on themselves, and stop having children. The governor (or similar) from earth has conversations with ...

@Jenayah Some animals are born helpless and take a long time to reach maturity - usually those with small litters/clutches and a lot of parental investment, and often ending up more intelligent/capable. Others are born pretty precocious and can go strutting (or swimming) around almost as soon as they're born - usually those with large litters/clutches and little to no parental investment, and often less advanced creatures.

In ecology, r/K selection theory relates to the selection of combinations of traits in an organism that trade off between quantity and quality of offspring. The focus on either an increased quantity of offspring at the expense of individual parental investment of r-strategists, or on a reduced quantity of offspring with a corresponding increased parental investment of K-strategists, varies widely, seemingly to promote success in particular environments. The terminology of r/K-selection was coined by the ecologists Robert MacArthur and E. O. Wilson in 1967 based on their work on island biogeography...

Q: Why didn't the Empire disarm the populace?

B540GlennWhy does the Empire allow its subjects to go around armed? Han Solo openly carries a blaster. Chewbacca carries his bowcaster. In Rogue One, Baze Malbus carried a heavy repeater cannon. How does this not draw attention of the Empire? It seems that if they want to control the universe, disarm...

Q: Movie or TV show with space battles found on YouTube

Video link is dead. What do we do with that question?
I mean, per "it's useful for future searches", there's nothing remotely identifying the thing in the question.
> chasing school bus in the end

@xkcd Sigh, yes, that's about how I feel. Admittedly, the TV series is aesthetically very well made and has many authentic details. However, there are suddenly so many people with a dangerously superficial knowledge again, but they don't want to hear what really happened because that would be too complicated.

"Nukulur power bad!"

And that's why we have to shut down our nuclear power plants in Germany despite the fact that our running plants are still safer than the currently new-built plants in the world.

It's so disappointing. Most of the problems that have caused accidents in the past (inappropriate materials, metal embrittlement, positive void coefficient...) are solved engineering problems. Modern reactors have excellent safety records and much better expected lifespans. And it doesn't seem to matter. :(

Q: Is there a canonical date for the destruction of Romulus?

Michael StachowskyAll we know from the 2009 Star Trek film is the date when the star went supernova. However, we aren't actually given the date for the destruction of Romulus, only that the "fastest ship" was outfitted for a mission to inject red matter and form the black hole to contain the explosion. Was there...

Michael StachowskyNero knows where and when Spock and the ship will emerge.
