Q: Tourism in the aftermath of a nuclear war

Invisible TrihedronA senior couple living in the panhandle of Florida decide it's their time to go traveling, so they rev up the RV and head out. Actually I think they're called something like this as well

The subjective detector is very bad
Anything with "can you" or "why" seems to trigger it

Seul l'intervalle...

@Stormblessed There's something wrong with your first sentence.

@Alex Yup
Wait, what problem? I totally didn't grace period edit it or anything

1:21 AM
Wouldn't playing it backwards means to flip it vertically?

@Jenayah No

@Stormblessed Are you talking about electronically processing it?

@DavidW Well like modifying a file in some way
It's like that
With piano, you flip it and thus the attack is at the end, the notes play in a backwards order, etc.

Yeah, the attack at the end totally makes it sound like it's played in reverse (in time). Are you sure it's not?

1:27 AM
So if you have a piano and you want to play the music with the scale inverted at some arbitrary note you could in theory program your keyboard for that.

Well I guess
But if I have music that already exists, could I decrease the pitch of high notes and increase the pitch of low notes is my question

So, yes, you want to electronically process it.

Yes
I think
Maybe

You can just enter the notes in reverse order.

I'm sure it's possible to write a filter that could do that.
You give your filter a fixed point (tone) that doesn't change, and then every other tone is transformed according to the number of semi-tones distant it is from the base tone.

Q: How did Skarpi know Kvothe's name in "The Name of the Wind"?

chris.w.mcleanSkarpi is mentioned many times before appearing in the first Kingkiller book. He's mentioned as friend of Kvothe and as a companion of the Chronicler. But his only interactions with Kvothe in Wind are in chapters 26 and 28. In neither (as far as I can find) does Kvothe give his name to Skarpi....

Yes, I have

Well, based on your accent I can narrow it down further.

I've moved my hands a few miles probably from all that typing

@Stormblessed Really? "S" gives me "San Sebastian, Spain" as choice 1; "T" gives me "Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico," "U" gives me "Utrecht, Netherlands," "V" gives me "Valencia, Spain"

@DavidW Are you on wi-fi?

@Alex that doesn't take Alaska into accounnt, and a bunch of islands, does it

Why is it that out of the entire country it shows seven cities?

@Stormblessed No, wired.

@Jenayah In order for the image to include Alaska it would have to also include a lot of non-United States territory as well.

2:24 AM
@Alex that’s really weird. It shows Ottawa but not New York

@Stormblessed Maybe Ottawa is more significant vis-a-vis Canada than New York City is vis-a-vis United States.

2:40 AM
@Stormblessed Nevermind, I wasn't thinking about what you posted as an example. Reversing the notes on the scale isn't symmetric. You have G-A-B-A-G in the first example, all of which are 2 semitones. Flipped, it's G-F-E-F-G, which is 2-1-1-2 semitones. Similarly if you flipped a perfect 5th, it might end up having only 6 semitones.
@Alex It is strange that out of the entire eastern seaboard it would pick Philadelphia over New York, Washington D.C., Baltimore or Boston. Or even Atlanta or Miami for that matter.
And yet it has LA and San Diego. It's like they put on Glasgow and Edinburgh, and then only Leeds.

@Alex l highly doubt it
It should show Toronto, I’d think
And New York is extremely giant
Definitely quite a bit bigger than Philly
Unrelated: You could, for the most part, physically turn the sheet music upside-down, except for some symbols that would be hard to read.The notes would all be mapped to new locations. — user45266 1 hour ago
Quite useful advice?

2:56 AM
@Stormblessed Are you talking area, or population?

@Alex population

@Stormblessed Even Boston is like 3 times the size of Philly, plus it's a lot more historic...

@DavidW hey they signed the Declaration there
The Constitutional Congress was there

Everyone likes to think their city is the most important. But Google Maps has spoken.

@Stormblessed Normally the melodic line is on the treble clef; turning the music upside down would put it in the bass clef, which would sound odd. We're not used to hearing the sustain in the treble.

2:58 AM
@DavidW not really sure what happened in Boston

You'd probably want to mirror it instead of flipping it, otherwise you're also playing it backwards. :)

Well a lot pre-US I guess

@Stormblessed Battle of Bunker Hill? Opening shots in the revolutionary war?

@DavidW Lexington is outside of there

And other than the Continental Congress stuff, what other claim to fame has Philly got? Cheese steak? :)

3:00 AM
Boston has relevance to an answer I posted here.

@DavidW pretty sure Ben Franklin was from there
Oh shit he’s from Boston
Oof

Hah!

@Laurel 1/2 It's hard to believe Dumbledore in book 6 when the events in book 1 indicate that Quirrell did teach Defense for more than a year. In any case, the whole Quirrell discussion is separate from the main point which is that no one (including) Dumbledore ever provided evidence that there was a curse. The fact that no one lasted more than a year (if true) is not evidence of a curse; a curse is a theory that would explain that data. This is similar to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Bambino 40 years might not be correct; though personally I'm more convinced by the 40 years — Alex Mar 14 at 19:10

They’ve got Quakers and William Penn, abolitionists before it was cool (not specifically Philadelphia, though)
Wait then I surrender the Battle of Lexington and Concorde to the Brit
That’s no good
@Stormblessed well technically abolitionists were always cool, but I mean that they were abolitionists when the North still had tons of slaves

@Randal'Thor what’s the post?

34 mins ago, by Rand al'Thor
@TheLethalCarrot No, the why was Weiss hired one.

@Randal'Thor That's commendable. But this question is incredibly problematic.

@NapoleonWilson Reading it once again, it actually seems like an entirely reasonable question. The OP isn't even commenting on how Weiss has done as a showrunner for Game of Thrones, merely contrasting his (apparently clear and publicly documented) previous failures with his being hired for the massive project of GoT. Are you sure you're not letting your cynicism regarding the many GoT critics get the better of you? It would at least be helpful if you could comment why this apparently objective question should be closed, rather than just saying "not gonna happen [...] this way". — Rand al'Thor 59 secs ago
There might be something you're seeing that I'm not (e.g. the OP is a sock of some well-known troll or something). But the question itself seems reasonable enough.
Unless they just made up all that stuff from the Wikipedia page or something. Or cherry-picked quotes. I didn't check.

@Randal'Thor It is entirely clear what the motivation behind it is and it is the culmination of "bad writing" complaints disguised as questions. It is ultimately an attempt to slander Weiss's professional reputation.
Yes, you could construe an on-topic question out of it, but that is an incredibly dangerous path.
You are free, though, to encompany your reopen vote with an edit that dispels these concerns.

I've made an edit, but I couldn't actually find any ranty material to remove.

2:37 PM
@Randal'Thor I'm sure you can always find dents in someone's career.

Weird how someone on Arqade with a bunch of rep. is complaining that my question has no value... from what I've seen, like 90% of their questions are horribly written Minecraft duplicates

Your comment about "culmination" might be the context I'm missing. I haven't checked the other posts from the same OP, or indeed followed recent M&TV posts in great detail. I'm judging this very question on its own merits.
And ironically, your deleting the onebox in here seems to have had the opposite effect from what you intended :-) Here we are engaging in a discussion about it rather than just ignoring it as another Obie thing.

But at least our discussion brought the question into the attention of this chatroom's participants. So...you might get it reopened soon and my deletion of the feed backfired quite heavily. Touché. ;-)
@Randal'Thor Indeed, especially when looking at the reopen-voters. ;-)

On the bottom line, though, inexperienced people get hired for projects all the livelong day, not the least in TV. Of course now we know GoT became in incredibly big thing and was apparently destroyed by the writers, but that's rather incidental to Weiss's hiring.

@Alex We could have had Future Works as its own close reason. There was a meta about it a couple of years ago, but the community didn't want it as a custom off-topic close reason rather than custom POB (which isn't a thing).

@Randal'Thor I know. I was being slightly sarcastic.

Japanese here
Where's Japanese?

3:24 PM
Second left

That's really weird
Out of the ones on the page, it's definitely one of the smaller in speakers
German has way more articles
I'd think it would be that, Russian, or Spanish
I wonder if the order's the same in other English-speaking countries
No Man's Sky was very disappointing, but the soundtrack is awesome

No Man's Sky's problem was that they advertised it as something it wasn't

Yeah
Hey @TheLethalCarrot what languages do they show on the left in order and on the right in order on wikipedia.org for you in Britain?

@TheLethalCarrot They're the same as here
Ok, cool
I'd think that like German and French would be higher up because they're a lot bigger in Europe than in North America (and it changes based on region)

Q: Is Surtur now invincible since he has regained the Eternal Flame?

HRIATEXPIn Thor: Ragnarok, Surtur destroys Asgard after he regains the Eternal Flame. Does this mean that he is now invincible? Would he be able to destroy any place in the Universe without opposition?

Got the MCU silver badge :)
And only 6 more Endgame questions until I get the Endgame bronze badge :)

Nice
8 more answers to story-ID bronze
Any privileges you can get other than the gold ones from them?

@TheLethalCarrot thought I had way more than that but got confused with M&TV ahah

No only gold tag badges give you something

I know that gold gives you unilateral protect

3:46 PM
@Stormblessed bragging rights

Ok
@Jenayah My favorite privilege

@Stormblessed Dupehammer you mean?
@Jenayah What you on? On both here and MTV?

@TheLethalCarrot \_(シ)_/

Protect is 15k I think

@TheLethalCarrot I meant for EG badge
@TheLethalCarrot yep

3:47 PM
Oh
Yeah, dupe

@Jenayah Your confusion has officially confused me

Why can't things be protected for a day?
Can mods protect them before that time?

I thought I had more answers than my 6 here
because I was thinking of M&TV

Ah gotcha and you have 7 here :)

@TheLethalCarrot oh.... blame caching on profile page :D

3:49 PM
I have 35 but waiting for the tag badge to become available haha

oh right you answer the time travel stuff as well :P

Did until the Russos contradicted my explanation and then one of the writers contradicted their explanation in line with mine and I realised that they hadn't actually thought it though properly themselves so decided not to waste any more time on it

shouldn't have bothered to begin with :D

Oh noes! Where'll we get the word of god answers from now that the gods...turned out to not actually be gods? \o/

@Stormblessed Yes.

3:55 PM
@TheLethalCarrot and just as you say that, guess what comes? scifi.stackexchange.com/q/212008/98028 Sock Detector going off

I've often raised flags on Puzzling asking for some question to be protected because it's attracting crap answers and too new for my rep privileges to work on it.

@Jenayah Unlcear what you're writing.

@TheLethalCarrot in light of your most recent comment, maybe you werr thinking of movies.stackexchange.com/q/99682/63559
@NapoleonWilson TLC: " the Russos contradicted my explanation and then one of the writers contradicted their explanation "
NEw question two minutes after: "It seems that the writers and directors of Avengers: Endgame disagree about the nature of the time travel in the film."

No I think there was a more specific one

@Jenayah Yeah, I know. I meant the question, don't worry.

3:59 PM
oh
oooh, it's your recurring joke about spoiler tags :D
<------ slow

But I'm sure if you look into the Russo's Wiki page, we'll see they never sucessfully pulled off a consistent time-travel movie anyway!
