Probably one of the stupidest questions I've ever asked but pedantry is compelling
Oh crap I lost 147 reputation today lol
@Jenayah any idea how you got more year reputation than total reputation here?
What's this "CreationEdge" thing? Their website is literally just a logo but they designed Möoz's icon and one of Literature's community promotion ads

Q: Seeking the name of early 20th century children's author

PratikLong ago, I read a children's story by an English author who probably pre-dated Enid Blyton and Richmal Crompton, and could be pre-World War I. It concerned some children trying to frighten an alcoholic off the bottle. Story line: They show him a bunch of Pomeranian dogs dyed pink, blue and green...

Mark SchäferI really don't know much about this movie anymore, since I've seen it only once as a child more than 30 years ago in the early 80's. @AvnishKabaj Much of the other stuff by Brandon Sanderson is really good
Did you read both series, or just the first three? I've started the second Mistborn series and it's quite good
@Mithrandir Still has ones on the other sites
Got a good tip for how to put Wayback Machine links in questions
Put "if_" between the big string of numbers showing what version it is and the slash before the web address. It removes all the added stuff to make it much closer to the original page.
Any way to sort recent messages by room in Chat?

@AvnishKabaj It really depends what you like. My current favourite fantasy series is Michelle Sagara's Chronicles of Elantra.
Robin Hobb is another good recommendation.
I love Patricia McKillip's books, but she doesn't write fast enough. :)

2:04 PM
@Jenayah what was that series you said you were reading so you couldn’t read Brandon Sanderson books?
@AvnishKabaj it’s very slow but The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson is quite good (it’s set on another planet in the same universe as Mistborn and I heard that one of the sequels is quite connected to the other series)

Huh. That's weird. I'm thinking of what authors I would automatically pick up a new fantasy book of theirs if I saw it. (Not necessarily buy, but definitely give it a look.) Other than Steven Brust, they're all women. The above 3, plus Robin McKinley, Lois McMaster Bujold, Barbara Hambly, C.J. Cherryh (if any of the last 3 went back to writing fantasy, obviously).

@Stormblessed Way of the king it is
After I complete origin
I read all of the mistborn
Alloy of law wasn't that good
Left halfway through

@AvnishKabaj it’s a good book but like 1500 pages
Took me a month XD but it had a good ending and plot

Should be fun

@Jenayah Speaking about reading order, in French info-processing how are diacritics handled when computing the lexical ordering of a set of strings?
(For example: {"frêne", "fréquent", "frère", "fret"})
Do you do a 2-pass ordering to remove the accents and then sort, or is there a 1-step shortcut?

@DavidW I guess this depends heavily on who does it but there are some standards for this, such as
The European ordering rules (EOR / EN 13710), define an ordering for strings written in languages that are written with the Latin, Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. The standard covers languages used by the European Union, the European Free Trade Association, and parts of the former Soviet Union. It is a tailoring of the Common Tailorable Template of ISO/IEC 14651. EOR can in turn be tailored for different (European) languages. But in inter-European contexts, EOR can be used without further tailoring. == Method == Just as for ISO/IEC 14651, upon which EOR is based, EOR has 4 levels of weights. Level...

@Jenayah That's an ugly standard; the Cyrillic ordering in particular munges several different alphabets all together. :-P But I was asking specifically about French; IIRC, French dictionaries don't consider accents special for ordering, so the order is based on the unaccented character. Which lead to my actual question, which was if there was a faster way to do that than to rewrite the strings without accents.

Wait standards are supposed to be pretty?
Specifically about French, not sure. I guess I simply never encountered such a situation :-) but that's interesting, I'll dig around

6:49 PM
@Jenayah weird Cyrillic would be after Greek, way more languages use it

@DavidW Hers was the last vote.
So no one else voted because Bellatrix voted.

I was making a joke of the fact that a user named Bellatrix voted on a question whose subject was the character named Bellatrix, and intentionally conflating the two. The mechanics of the vote were incidental, and now that I've had to explain it, it's not funny. :-P

@DavidW Ah, I thought you meant that if Bellatrix the user votes to close then it’s obviously opinion-based since she’s an expert in Harry Potter.

Read less into some sentences will ya? You'll miss on some funny jokes otherwise ;P
