A: Would the War of the Five Kings have occurred if Ned had refused Robert's request?

MöozHonestly, all we have to go by as far as an official answer is from George R. R. Martin himself, where he says: NED AND THE NIGHT’S WATCH If Ned had taken the black... ... it would have been a different novel-So Spake Martin, 2012-04-22: Ned and the Night's Watch. That's it, that's all ...

Q: Asimov Chair of Books

Tanner StrunkAm I crazy, or was there once a photo circulating the internet of Isaac Asimov sitting in a chair made entirely of his own books? I cannot find this photo in Google anywhere now, and I'm beginning to think I'm nuts. Please advise.

@Voronwë Tag wikis which copy directly from Wikipedia should be rejected. That's plagiarism without citing the source, and doesn't make a great SE tag wiki even with proper attribution. We have metas about this.
Just an FYI. A lot of people don't realise this, but you should really check whenever you review a tag wiki edit that looks like it could be taken from elsewhere. Just sticking the text into Google is usually good enough to find it if it's a copy-paste.

@Randal'Thor I see... thanks for the heads up.

@Bellatrix You need to be more careful than that :-)
@Voronwë No prob. I remember it was years before I learned this about plagiarism, because nobody told me about it when I did bad reviews.

@Randal'Thor if our own SFF feed went away shouldnt the M&TV go to the same place?

A: Do we want to continue having a main site question feed in the general chat room?

SQBWe just need to chat more. But seriously, the last couple of days, I've seen enough activity in Milliways (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe) that the main feed isn't the sole source of content. So perhaps we should leave it as it is for now.

Vote here.

Q: Spider-Man's resilience

Liquid SameIn Spider-Man: Homecoming, a few scenes where Peter gets beaten with little to no harm really bothered me. And Spider-Man is not even harmed And is just mildly disoriented as well as experiencing a little nose bleed. Now I know Spider-Man is very powerful and resilient but I don't think it...

Q: Significance of Peter Parker's ringtone

Liquid SameIn Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter's phone rings throughout the movie in a couple scenes (ex: Weapon selling scene). The ringtone is very "loud" (it's not just a background noise, it is meant to be heard and focused on by the audience) and very distinctive. Is the ringtone a reference to anything...

A: Proposals for a list of FAQ questions

GallifreyanThe FAQ blog post is currently How do I contribute to the blog? However, it dates back to 2011, and some things (a lot of things) have changed since then. I propose we move the FAQ status to Questions about our off-site blog? as it is more up to date, and the relevant person is easier to reach th...

I just thought, The Sandman is a lot like Doctor Who.
Sandman has ravens, Doctor has companions.
Both change a little all the time, and sometimes there are very big changes.

Okay.... This is like the 5th time I've seen this in the last few days. This answer is just a bad/wrong answer, which means we DV it. What about it makes it worth deletion?
I feel like I'm not understanding something here

it was flagged for length/content. I think that's an auto-flag for short answers

You shouldn't - just press Looks Okay.

@DaaaahWhoosh Ah, that makes more sense.

@amflare there is nothing that says bad answers can't be deleted. heck, the site even self cleans bad posts the reach a certain down vote level iirc

@SQB Umm, seems like an ok question. Is there something in particular you are concerned about?

@Skooba Questions, yes, if they have no answer. Answers, no.

@Donald.McLean well, the fact that I'm not a regular on that stack and that my self-answer feels a bit cobbled together.

Q: Game of Thrones S07E01 - Doesn't other Maester know about this thing about Dragon-glass

Deepak KamatA lot of new information has come up about mythical stuffs mostly with the premiere of the new season of Game of Thrones, one of which is about Dragon-Glass. If you haven't watched the first episode yet then stop on your tracks 'cause the internet is dark and full of spoilers. The Citadel is t...

Q: Why still the Baratheon Sigil on Kings Landing in Game of Thrones opening sequence?

Deepak KamatJust before the series premier I saw a video somewhere on the Internet about how there was an orchestra performance in the series premiere while the opening sequence came on the big screen - well, many people pointed that it was fake since the Sigil on King's Landing was of Baratheon (+ The Great...

Q: Martin Landau: RIP

Kerr AvonSadly, I wish to mark the passing of Martin Landau with extremely fond memories of Commander Koenig. Whilst he has provided many enjoyable performances over his 89 years, his contribution to sci-fi in Space 1999 will remain one of my childhood favourites.

Q: Patrick Stewart film with naked aliens who turn people into zombies

JimmeryLooking for identification for a film I haven't seen in a long, long time (maybe 2 decades ago). Q: Are duplicate questions on different SE sites considered "exact duplicates"?

Gabe WillardI noticed on Pureferret's question What happened to the Heroes from Diablo 1?, C. Ross mentions that the exact same question was asked on Gaming.SE. I don't think that means the question should be closed as an exact duplicate, but I wanted to ask on meta. If a question has an exact duplicate on ...

Or just link in comments, like I do.

@amflare (To answer the technical question, no, there's no feature to mark as duplicate across different sites.)

There are such suggested features, though.
Or was it about cross-posting?

Q: Build and strengthen the Stack Exchange community with "crossover questions" between sites

hippietrailI've been a Stack Exchange contributor for a couple of years now, currently most active on travel.SE. Q: What to do with cross-site duplicates?

lc.What's the right course of action for cross-site duplicates? There are two flavors: A question is posted which belongs on another site and ends up already having been asked there. I can't find an example right now, but it's bound to happen soon if it hasn't already. The same question is posted...

As a general rule, do we care which way dups point? Is it age? Number of answers? Accepted answers?

Better answers.

@amflare Usually age is the first factor because a new post will not have had time to accrue votes/answers/. However, if a newer question slips through the cracks and being closed at a later time it comes down which post is of higher quality. This can be somewhat subject, but typically a higher question score and/or higher answer score will be good indicators.
In the end it is a case by case basis.

7:30 PM
It can happen that one question is a bit broader than another. In that case we keep the broader one, because the narrower one doesn't fully answer the broader.

@SQB like the color or lightsabers... :P

SQB
Example: "what did Harry Potter study during his first year at Hogwarts?" vs. "what did Harry Potter study during his time at Hogwarts?", where we typically would keep the latter (if both are properly answered).
@Skooba I guess, but I sense a hornet's nest, so I'd have to read the questions first.

@SQB lol the proper spelling of lightaber is currently being debated on meta

SQB
Sometimes, the broader question is asked on purpose, to get a canonical answer that closes multiple duplicates.
@Skooba yeah, I saw that. Seems clear cut to me.

@SQB same here. what makes it better is that two brits are the ones who started it

@SQB Thanks for the Caucus badge.

@Skooba I don't think so:
@Skooba The only point of moving out the SFF main questions feed was that it was drowning out conversation. The M&TV feed isn't voluminour enough to drown out conversation, so there's no need to move it out. And if this helps to encourage neighbourliness with other sites, so much the better! — Rand al'Thor ♦ 6 mins ago
@Mithrandir Haven't we seen that one before?
Maybe Wad posted it at some point.

shrugs

@Skooba No it isn't. Nobody disputes that "lightsaber" is a correct spelling; the disagreement is over whether "lightsabre" is also correct.

I can always provide some kid with poofy hair if you want.

8:59 PM
Which it is, but Richard posted a question with a trick title, as if to make people think they're voting on which of "lightsaber" and "lightsabre" is more appropriate.

@Randal'Thor I think if you look in here from the time the SFF feed was removed, the M&TV has been disruptive as well. I would counter as well and ask if M&TV has a SFF (honestly interested).
does JNAT appear when SFF and M&TV appear in the same sentence? lol

The wild @JNat roams the land of Oooo... Er, I mean SE.

9:23 PM
@Skooba How has it been disruptive? I mean, how many messages does it even post per day?

@Randal'Thor 6 this afternoon
with the low traffic thats probably not insignificant

And no, I don't think the Screening Room has an SFF feed. You could suggest it in there.
Trouble is, our and tags are inconsistently used, often on ID questions, and wouldn't make a particularly useful feed for them.

@Randal'Thor I just overall its a bit odd feeling
my 2 cents

It is an odd feeling not to have the main-site questions feed in here.
Not to be able to link-reply to a new question to make a joke about it.
But all change is odd at first.
And all we need to do to get it back is chat more! :-D

Would it be possible to make the messages ephemeral? Have them self delete after 3 hours or something?

9:37 PM
Unfortunately, no.
Unless we change it to a ticker feed, which would sooooort-of achieve that.
But I've already gone into the disadvantages of ticker feeds on meta.
