Uh, hold up, how'd this question receive answers while its closed? — Simply Beautiful Art 1 min ago

When taking limits, I know you can expand $\sin(x)$ by $x-\frac{x^3}{3!}+\frac{x^5}{5!}$
how do I know how far to expand before using the big O notation like $x-\frac{x^3}{3!} + O(\frac{x^5}{5!})$

@SimplyBeautifulArt It's a post by a very frustrated person who seems to me to be looking closely at the philosophical meaning of equality and not getting the right answers from his/her teachers. Ethan Bolker's answer is right on the mark, so it should be sufficient explanation.
@SimplyBeautifulArt Don't tell too many people, but if you're already typing an answer to a question before it is closed, you can still post it as long as you don't refresh. I did that once because there was a very good question but some jokers closed it. =)

@amWhy @SimplyBeautifulArt: On the other hand, this question is really a bad one.

@amWhy @SimplyBeautifulArt: This too and this.
@amWhy Interesting; how's your new diet going? I've been a vegetarian for about a year now. Based on what I read vegetarians (especially vegans) need to take care of their B12 requirement somehow. Other than that, I'm not sure how exactly to tell whether I'm getting 'sufficient' nutrition given that there's no observable change.

@amWhy @SimplyBeautifulArt @Zophikel @shredalert @user400188: This post is not at all an answer to the question but somehow got 7 upvotes and can't be deleted. Earlier I had tried flagging it as NAA but some reviewers clicked "Looks OK" with their eyes closed. We just need 5 more downvotes then we can do it ourselves.

This bad question is a bit amusing.

If that user spent time proving the squeeze theorem it would have helped.

@shredalert: Well it's a homework question and 'clearly' Math SE is a site for them to get their homework done.
@amWhy @SimplyBeautifulArt: So time to delete it!

I downvoted it

@shredalert: What about the NAA? =D

NAA?

@user21820 <- This Not-An-Answer post.

Ah
I downvoted both
Just downvoted the NAA you linked to
Didn't realise how many things needed downvotes

@shredalert Haha.. I've always speculated that the quality could be improved by giving more weight to votes from those with higher reputation. If done right, this recursive system should have a stable fixed-point. The problem is that every vote can affect everyone's reputation, so one's reputation would be perpetually fluctuating.

I don't really mind what happens to my rep.

10:22 AM
It's not that; it's that experts are unable to have a bigger say in what are good and bad posts.
If something gets on the hot network list, both question and answers get a lot of upvotes from strangers from other sites who usually have little mathematical background.
This would be ameliorated in my system because they would have no reputation on Math SE to begin with and thus have much less effect.

10:48 AM
Yeah, I've noticed a lot of crappy questions about logic getting quite a few upvotes when it's very elementary stuff that falls out of definitions.

@user21820 XD Okay

@SimplyBeautifulArt I think you'll really enjoy the book I'm reading on lambda calculus and type theory. You don't really need any prerequisites for it.

It's called Type Theory and Formal Proof: An Introduction.
Since you like programming and stuff I thought I'd let you know

Thanks
and g'morning

Hello dear people with whom I've not spoken today (yet). Includes but is certainly not limited to @SimplyBeautifulArt, @shredalert, @user21820, @Zophikel, @SBM ... et.al. Time to get rolling with a delete request: math.stackexchange.com/questions/2361948/…, and while you're at it, scroll up to the original (programming) question to add a delete vote on the question.

@amWhy The OP requested a delete. I think that one will go soon on its own.

@shredalert Yes, I see that now. Thanks!

@amWhy Thanks for suggesting the Sipser text a while ago btw. I ended up looking into it for some stuff. :)

@shredalert NP... The Theory of Computation text?

Yeah.
Had a very productive day today, and now I'm really tired. xD

9:34 PM
@shredalert That's a good kinda tired! Better than the stressed out/headache kind of tired!
