Q: Do repulsor craft have a height limit?

thegreatjediRepulsor-craft are land-based (usually) vehicles designed to levitate above the surface during operational use. Is there a technical limit to the achievable height? Most seem to hover just slightly above the surface, but Separatist STAPs have been seen on Teth being used like an airborne infantr...

Q: Jacksonverse tag for Peter Jackson "Tolkien"- based movies?

SpencerWe use the term "Jacksonverse" to describe the liberties Peter Jackson took with the Hobbit . Since so many Tolkien questions on this site turn on the differences between the books and the movies, I think having a "jacksonverse" or "peter-jackson" tag would help organize them better. (.....aaaaa...

Q: Trying to find the title to a sci-fi novel in the 90's, maybe early 2000

Zach JohnsonIn the early 2000s I read a Science fiction book in school. The details I remember are vague. Just little glimpses of the beginning. I believe in the beginning of the book a girl, the protagonist, wakes up in a kind of Laboratory out of a deep sleep. The room glowing a type of violet. She realize...

Q: When did Spiderman got his mechanical web thrower?

Santosh KumarPeter Parker was bitten by a spider. Since then (after some biological advancements), Spiderman was able to throw web-ropes for swinging and whatever purposes. It was Spiderman 2 when it was still his biological arm. Now I'm watching Spiderman: Homecoming. Which shows his mechanical arm is upgra...

Q: Was Netflix's Castlevania series faithful to the original games?

Steven VascellaroAccording to Nintendo Life, Netflix's animated Castlevania series is loosely based on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. I presume adaptations needed to be made, as the original source material left much room for interpretation. How faithful was Netflix's Castlevania series to the original games?...

Q: Can anyone help me find this sci-fi/horror movie? could be unfindable!

robI have very little to go on as I saw this movie when I was very young. Here is what I remember. I believe it was an American made movie (most likely straight to video/low budget). I'm thinking from the 80's, maybe early 90s. I believe it was two, maybe three guys go backpacking for the weekend...

too bad. The pinned daily floof is more than one day old.

@Galli pin pls ^^

That is... ghastly.

It's a floof, it's 2017 can't all floofs be equal?

Nope ;)

8:03 AM
@Mithrandir it is a fantasy floof, you should be happy.
unless you mean you never saw Labyrinth (or read the book the movie was based on).

Nope, never did.

Q: Book about a kid who phases out???

BillI read a book... Twice... When I was a kid and want to read it again. The problem is I don't remeber the name of it. It followed this main character (a boy) who was slowly fading out of his reality. He was still there, but nobody could see him. It's hard to explain, but if this rings any bells f...

Q: How was the Atlas of Middle Earth measured and scaled?

Matt ThrowerThe answer to this question - From what distance can Sting detect Orcs or Goblins? - uses measurements from Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth. This reminded me of a question I've always had about that book. Middle-earth is large and we have limited information on the scale of its geogr...

Q: How can we make this question on-topic? Should we, at all?

AegonYesterday, this question was asked by a user. The trouble was: It was based on a hypothetical premise i.e. What if X? It had two separate but related questions. At first it was getting closed as (Primarily opinion based?) as it looked like it would be based on speculation. Skooba and Rich...

Q: Movie about a dark city and a suicidal artist

HideAndSeekI am looking for a movie – I must have watched it roughly five years ago. Sadly, I only remember fragments and it’s been driving me nuts… The setting was both modern time and a strange ‘dark city’ and the genre was some kind of magical realism. Very dark and melancholy. One of the protagonists ...

@Voronwë that because Jabba is the third evolution stage of Alloworm.
Alloworm => Lardworm => Jabbachu
Should be dual type, Dark/Grass

@Derpy More like Bug/Grass to remind us of how terrible that typing is (ahem Parasect)

I was confused by edit 2, @Gallifreyan, but then I don't fully understand the tagging conventions on SFF. Are author tags used differently here than they are on Literature?

@Shokhet Yes, we don't use author tags for questions about specific works.

@Donald.McLean Hi!

We use them for questions about authors, or about overarching themes in their works.

@Gallifreyan Okay. Someone added it back, though. Edit war?

A: What is the correct usage of individual works tags vs. author tags vs. franchise tags?

KutuluMikeWe should be pretty liberal with creating tags for specific works of science fiction, and here's why I think so (if you don't care, skip down a bit :) ) In my opinion, a "work of fiction" is the core element of "expertise" that exists for the people supplying answers on this site. In other words...

Fixed now.

1:20 PM
@Gallifreyan It may have been worthwhile to explain the tag removal in the edit summary, and/or link to relevant meta.

@Shokhet Fixed that too.

@Gallifreyan I don't see it. You can't change the edit summary, even within the five minutes right after submitting an edit, unless you change something else in the post. See a typo anywhere?

@Shokhet Now it's fixed :D

Ooh, put quotation marks around the Mule's words -- he's speaking there, right?

Q: Weren't the Knights honor-bound to release Palin Majere?

MyCodeSucksIn Dragons of the Summer Flame, Palin Majere was captured after a quick battle by the Knights of Takhisis. @DaaaahWhoosh Blasphemy :-O The one with the scarf is the Fourth Doctor.
@amflare @Napoleon @Edlothiad @Catija This is the latest consensus on answers defining duplicates.
@Rahul2001 There's a rough explanation here of how the chat film nights work. These days someone usually hosts the film in a Watch2gether room so that anyone can join in even if they don't have a copy of their own.
@Gallifreyan While you're right about the consensus on author tags (with an exception for short stories), it's worth noting that only 3 of 50 questions aren't also tagged . Theory and practice don't always agree :-/ (cc @Shokhet)

@Randal'Thor Thanks :)
@Randal'Thor Unfortunately, schoolwork has come up so it looks like I probably won't be able to join in. Which is a pity, since I really wanted to watch this film and this seems like a great idea :/

@Rahul2001 Aww, that's a pity. Maybe next time?

@Randal'Thor hopefully!

@Randal'Thor I've been removing author tags from . I can do next.

@Edlothiad Sometimes I like to stand out. :)

A: Should we relax the tag creation rules for this site?

Jeff Atwood Each time someone wants to talk about a novel no one has talked about yet, it'll require the creation of a new tag I absolutely do not think you want to create one tag for every novel ever written. That is ridiculous! Popular series like Lord of the Rings, perhaps. Genres, certainly. But a...

Heh.

@Randal'Thor that sounds like Emrak's proposal at Lit

@Randal'Thor Noooooooooo

But we can always post oneboxed questions here ourselves.
@amflare Have we identified the single downvote on my meta answer? :-)

mebbe <_<
I was hoping the increased activity would at least push the removal off into the future
since that seemed to be the main argument against it

in SFF community cleanup room, 8 mins ago, by Gallifreyan
For the record, I'd refrain from removing Babelfish from main chat for now. Maybe SQB's answer will get more support yet.
But hey, why listen to me?

Or at least the most valid argument

@Gallifreyan You posted that just after I'd removed the feed :-/
@amflare If we can increase the activity even more, the Babelfish will be back in no time! :-)

@Randal'Thor How does this work? Just a bare link?

@amflare Yep.

Q: How many of SciFi members look at who posted before voting?

KyloRenSimple discussion and as the title says, how many of SciFi members look at who posted before voting? Up-vote means you do, down-vote means you don't.

@Marvin tempted to post an answer saying 'vote for the post, not the person' but that isn't actually answering the question.

@Mithrandir I vote for the post but I'm always interested in who posts it -- sometimes you start to see the trend with certain users and can kind of anticipate their next questions

4:08 PM
@Marvin The only reason I'd check who posted is if there is a situation where there is something like 2 answers with valid answers I'd upvote, but one has <500 rep and the other >10k. I'll withhold the vote on the highrep user just so that the low rep answer doesn't get overlooked due to a runaway effect. But thats something of an edge case.

@amflare Vote manipulation, b&

Also, I'm not a legend, but you honor me ;P

@Bellatrix Who dares summon me?

@Mithrandir Well I've seen you around so maybe you are! :P
@Mithrandir At least you're male otherwise I would have tried to make a pun and just looked really silly! :P

How do you shrink images in posts?
Does anyone know off the top of their head?

Add an 'm' 's' or 't' to the end of the image URL.
('l' = large | 'm' = medium | 's' = small | 't' = tiny)

@amflare On the top of my head is a lot of hair. :P

@Mithrandir so like ".jpgs" or "s.jpg"?
Or neither? (because both are just causing broken images for me :/ )

@amflare, add it before the .jpg - i.e. regular image: i.stack.imgur.some_random_url.jpg would be i.stack.imgur.some_random_url+s/m/l.jpg

Ah, thanks

10:00 PM
@Mithrandir Actually t is thumbnail, and it's bigger than s.

Q: Why is Frigga (queen of Asgard) not taken to healing room?

Santosh KumarIn the first part of Thor, when Volstagg returns injured from Jotunheim, Odin, the king of Asgard orders to send him to healing room. Which portrays that Asgard has a healing room. Then why is Frigga not sent to healing room when attacked by Kurse of Svartalfheim? Wasn't there enough time to se...

@Bellatrix I've stumbled along. Himarm'd again.
Can we unpin some things. the pin board is too full I can't even see all the pins.
It's a bit ridiculous that the starboard is no longer in use because we have so many things pinned.

There, now it's just three pins.

Still too many.
Wait nevermind got @bella's star, that's all I really care about.

Q: Why is Saruman so reluctant to leave Orthanc?

anemoneNot for Saruman, apparently, ever to endure the hardships of the road or always be a guest in someone else's house. And he also needs to run a few experiments. So he sets up a home. However, how can he hope to run all his affairs from there, relying on orcs as his henchmen? He is aware that the...

@Edlothiad Why does Saruman sit on his arse in Orthanc when he could be more effective by being out and about like Gandalf?

This isn't answered. Guess you should answer it then, to add to your tally of "we don't know"s

@Edlothiad You mean the floof I posted? :)

@Bellatrix "Accio people! :P" too which I stumbled along in my drunken stupor
