I have a resource question, which I guess is not appropriate for the main site or even meta. I've never used chat, but maybe this is appropriate here? I'd like to learn a bit more about the evolution of Japanese, preferably including things about various dialects and the development of 標準語. If possible I'd like a simple introductory book in Japanese, say aimed at 6-8th grade students (roughly my Japanese reading level). Any suggestions?

@Kimball my knowledge of the literature is not very deep, but maybe this covers some of what you're looking for?

@ssb Thanks, the table of contents look interesting. Ideally I'd like something written in non-technical Japanese because I often find it easier to understand Japanese descriptions of Japanese more comprehensible than English descriptions. (Plus it's better practice for me.) But if I can't find something like this, I'll try to check out that book.

This was in the related books
No idea how reputable it is
@Kimball see above
I know even less of what there is in Japanese. Hopefully someone better versed in such subjects can offer a more authoritative recommendation.

@Daniel I just checked the book again, and on the cover it says 「でも、ないものがひとつ。」 - that seems to confirm my interpretation.

9:07 AM
Yes, I just misread それ, that's why I dind't understand it

Xeo
Ah, I see. What did you read it as?

I wonder what happened in Japanese culture to make them latch onto ダーリン as the go-to pet name for a lover

The author of this answer seems quite confident in their interpretation

They can't believe someone might disagree

I know we have a meta post about negativity right now

But I think it's helpful when people downvote answers they think are clearly wrong or misleading

Leaving comments instead is helpful too…

But sometimes I'm reluctant to leave comments when users get angry about negative feedback

Anonymous
Like, I didn't leave a comment just now explaining why I downvoted…

Anonymous
I think it's a more significant problem when people leave rude comments

Anonymous
The same author wrote another answer, and I had to delete rude comments on that answer

Anonymous
I'd rather distinguish politely disagreeing (which I think can be helpful for the site) from actual "negativity" (being rude, mocking an answer, etc., which I think is not helpful at all)

ssb
I'd never refrain from posting constructive criticism
If someone wants to reveal themselves to be a jerk then that is their prerogative

@Kimball Hmm…

I have both of the books ssb linked to, but they are in English (and both are technical books, the history of language being a technical subject)

I have some books about the history of Japanese in Japanese but...

Anonymous
They don't fit what you're asking about either…

I looked online and I found this book and looked at it briefly, but I haven't read it:

There we go, managed to link to it on my third try :-)

@snailboat Thanks, glancing at that book online looks like its not too hard to read. I'll see if I can find it in a bookstore to flip through and check out more thoroughly (hopefully its popular enough to be in stock at some big bookstores).

Have you tried yet just going to bookstores and looking at what they have?
