New word/kanji of the day: 乖離

Anonymous
6:00 AM
Oh, I like that one!

Anonymous
I first learned it when a fellow learner typed おかいり instead of おかえり and they got お乖離 :-)

Anonymous
So I use that memory to help remember its reading

ssb
I'm surprised that exact error hasn't happened to me yet

Anonymous
It comes up now and then―it was in Steins;Gate, too

Anonymous
But not terribly often, so having that as a sort of mnemonic helps me remember :-)

6:26 AM
Hey guys, I know nothing in Japanese and I would like someone to show me a way, I started with Erin's Challenge but it seemed a lil too much, I dont even know how to read (and which alphabet to start with), even if I did know, I dont know the meaning of words, so can someone point me to a right direction?

ssb
Learn hiragana, then learn katakana
perhaps start with a textbook like Genki to get you on your feet

6:44 AM
another person said learn romaji and then learn hiragana & katakana
what do you think about that?

ssb
romaji is a waste of time
Learning hiragana is not hard
it'll take a few hours at most to get used to it

allright we'll see, Im studying from here

ssb
I think the best way to learn hiragana is to write it out by hand
Start learning some basic words and grammar and write out sentences in hiragana, by hand, as you learn them

Anonymous
You want to get used to reading Japanese writing 'cause that's what Japanese is written in 99.9% of the time

thnks :)

Unfortunately I don't know of any sort of free, comprehensive guide for beginners that isn't plagued by some degree of error or bad reputation

really :O, I thought at 2015 you could learn any language on the net for free with a good tutorial :S

Anonymous
It's actually okay if not everything is perfect as long as it helps you get started with using the language

Anonymous
That's my opinion :-)

Anonymous
Since you do the most learning when you actually interact with the language rather than just reading about it

Anonymous
And you'll inevitably end up with some misunderstandings and correct them down the road anyway

6:59 AM
I mean, of course I'd ideally like a free perfect online guide with good pedagogy and accurate descriptions... :-)

Anonymous
But I think worrying about picking the best source just leads to decision paralysis—might as well just go through Tae Kim or something :-)

Anonymous
There's that imabi site too

ssb
Various textbooks can be obtained as well at prices that vary depending on your moral scruples

I'm still playing that タイピングの神様 game. I'm up to 86文字/分!

Anonymous
It doesn't seem to take long at all to learn flick input

ssb
7:06 AM
i'm still quite slow

question: why do I learn first hiragana then katakana
katakana looks easier?
and I think タイピングの神様 game is in katakana right?

ssb
most of what you see will be hiragana
if it isn't kanji
katakana will come easily, don't worry

okay

Anonymous
The order isn't that important, but hiragana first is fine

7:21 AM
It's a little bit like asking if you should learn capital or lowercase letters first—it's true that one is more common than the other, but you'll use both all the time so I don't know if it matters too much

okay I see
btw is there no fu sound :O

Anonymous
The Japanese f sound is really a voiceless bilabial fricative

Anonymous
So Japanese doesn't have the English f sound

Anonymous
As Wikipedia explains: "For English-speakers, it is easiest to think of the sound as an f-sound made only with the lips, instead of the upper teeth and lower lip."

7:46 AM
Wow, people are really fast at flick input m.youtube.com/watch?v=dy6nS0gqvgY

11:08 AM
I'm terrible at flick input
I keep going clockwise to display the whole sequence before going back to get what I want

1 hour later…
12:19 PM
I'm reading a graded learners book
And I'm a bit confused about the following
でも、一つだけありません。
Before that, it describes the things that are in a little girl's bedroom
and after that it says: それは、「ことば」
I understand the words, but the phrase itself makes no sense to me
But, there wasn't just one thing?

Xeo
Sounds like only 「ことば」 did not exist
"But only one thing did not exist." / "... was not there."
I would interpret that だけ / only as emphasis. But what do I know. :)

no, it goes on to say that the words are coming from somewhere else

Xeo
hm

from her parents who are arguing
gimme a seck, i'll upload the page

Xeo
ooh, I can actually read that.

12:29 PM
I understand everything in the book, except for that phrase. I understand the phrase itself, but not what it refers to.

Xeo
hm

maybe it's happiness the only thing there isn't in the room?

Xeo
It does seem to refer to the words.
I'd read it as "There is <this, this and this> in the room. But one thing was not in/from there. That is, 'words'", because the words came from outside the room.

Yeah, that would make sense. Thanks

Xeo
What's the name of the book?
I might wanna get that

12:37 PM
It's a collection
They've got collections for each JLPT level
I personally think they're awesome, just what I needed as a beginner.
And they come with audio for each of the stories, which helps a lot with listening skills (and god knows I need to work on them)

Xeo
Seems interesting, thanks. Do you know where they ship from? Japan directly?

1 hour later…
2:05 PM
Yep, I think so.

2:29 PM
何日本女がですか?

Xeo
2:55 PM
?

3:22 PM
わかりません

8:58 PM
@Chris That doesn't make any sense

Anonymous
You should probably try to work through a basic textbook or something

Anonymous
Maybe get a book like A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Sentence Patterns

Anonymous
At this point you want to model your own sentences on correct Japanese sentences that you've heard or read
