@samcarter -- Eek! I just went back and checked the 45:3 calendar, and it has the wrong date (July 7) for the 46:2 deadline. So it wasn't you! I gotta get a better proofreader than me (and Karl)!
@barbarabeeton This is like the fake islands on maps etc. to see from where stuff gets copied :P
00:37
@samcarter So true ahah
@EmanueleNardi ... maybe I should post an answer to your minted question "simply place the new style in your working directory" and everybody will jump at it to correct my nonsense :P
@Skillmon I feel called out :)
Well, at least I managed to do it myself afterward ;)
@samcarter please DO
00:52
@samcarter This is wow
@EmanueleNardi :)

Hey @Atex, we haven't met in person, but I’ve read through all your messages in this chat, so I hope it’s okay for me to offer some advice: 'Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.' Just post your response, edit it, read others' answers, and learn from them.
When I read the accepted answer here, I couldn't help but think, "Well done, he's putting himself out there."
I just upvoted that answer, it is very well written
Consider not knowing how to answer a question as an opportunity to learn something new.
Take this reply of mine, for example. Did I think, 'How foolish of me to spend an hour writing a response in a language I don't understand,' or, 'I know full well that King Egreg will come in with a swiftly one-liner answer, but in the meantime, I’m learning something new'?
As a final example, I’m sharing this question: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/733765/how-can-i-create-and-use-a-custom-pygments-style-for-the-minted-package.

I posted it fully aware that I might not receive an answer, but with the intent of both leaving myself a reminder to respond later and helping anyone else who might encounter the same issue once it’s available on the blog.
Lastly, and by no means least, I believe blogs like these are truly valuable to the community. However, I can't stand people who ask questions like, "I need help with this," without making any effort to find a solution themselves, expecting others to do the work for them.
@Atex before you know it you'll be a great tikz user and you'll be showing us your wonders, I can't wait!
@Atex "It probably isn't healthy to spend too much time on the site, either;)" I agree, we should touch grass more often :)

@AlanMunn ah that makes sense. Thanks for checking!

@EmanueleNardi I had no one in particular in mind.

@EmanueleNardi Of course, never shy away from leaving advice when it comes to addressing me - I love and appreciate every bit of it, even if I may challenge you on it! That way, perhaps both of us could get an unexpected benefit out of the exchange of the conversation:)
@EmanueleNardi You hit the nail on the coffin with the 2nd example of thought. I've always had the mentality that people should receive the best service, and when I know someone else's best is better than mine, I tend to abstain or refer to them. I guess the takeaway here should be a shift of mentality: "Your own best is good enough", and to always remember Isaac Newton's infamous quote: "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."
@EmanueleNardi I humbly thank you for the encouragement. I just recalled that I've used TikZ in a similar way before, and feel quite comfortable with basic usage of it, and I thought that this question may be just within my grasp. Regarding that question, I did feel like I had a solid sense of direction, and I think I just need to build up the confidence even when I don't have a solid sense of direction.
@EmanueleNardi I haven't gotten to that level yet where I can estimate whether the questions are within the scope of realistically being answered or not because of their difficulty, but I think I get your point. It is to also try and make a breakthrough, discovering a solution to a problem which hasn't been addressed before and thus establishing and exploring usage potential that way, right?
@EmanueleNardi I appreciate you so much for accurately articulating how some of the others may have felt yesterday! To me, it was a matter of referring difficult matters to more trusted hands, but to them, it was an additional burden placed on their shoulders. Regardless, I now better understand why they might've understood my question as a disaster.
@EmanueleNardi Is that a hint about which area I should aim to specialize at?;)
@EmanueleNardi Definitely, but I'll say that constructive criticism, healthy discussions, exchanging ideas and values, trying to understand each other's viewpoints etc. are all interactions which do make it worthwhile!
I believe this nicely concludes the topic we discussed earlier. Thank you for coming with these very crucial, nice and insightful last remarks!

@Skillmon I know, don't worry :)
I just realized, are you a fan of MTG?
16:59
@EmanueleNardi MTG is a fan of @Skillmon.

@StefanKottwitz I wish... :)
@EmanueleNardi a fan? I wouldn't describe me as that, but I was an avid player. And that particular card was just one that was in the first deck I ever played on a camping trip.
19:25
Who even uses tabbing anyway....
19:56
@Skillmon I see! I’m an avid player myself. I started with "Morningtide" when I was 12 and was captivated by the stunning illustrations and the challenge of understanding its logic. Such a beautiful game. Did you stop playing?
This was one of the first illustrations that left me astonished.
It’s now considered a low-tier card :(
"I just I don't think this is going to work I'm so sorry"
@EmanueleNardi lol that was great! They even managed to sneak in an editor war.
@AlanMunn I watched the episodes in no particular order, in my defense it's on the watchlist, as soon as I finish rewatching House of Cards but this time watching the last two seasons without Kevin Spacey for the first time I will start it
@EmanueleNardi I've never seen it at all. Looks entertaining.
20:11
@AlanMunn btw I do use tabs but I let vscode convert them automagically in spaces reading the config file of every project
@AlanMunn Looks fun to me!
@EmanueleNardi Yeah, my comment was about the tabbing environment in LaTeX (because Karl Berry had asked a question about it).
@AlanMunn Oh lol
Who has ever use it? 😅
@AlanMunn It's fairly useless but people still seem to use it, it comes up from time to time in user reports.
@DavidCarlisle Very strange.
@AlanMunn apparently some people have used some software known as Word (?) that has some concept of tab use that's separate to tables and slighly better modelled by tabbing than tabular but I know nothing of these things.

@DavidCarlisle Tabs make perfect sense in a WYSIWYG editor, but they're antithetical to LaTeX I think.
@PauloCereda See the avatar of this user tex.stackexchange.com/users/294205/pedro-montanari :)
20:40
@DavidCarlisle Oh my, such blasphemy!
@AlanMunn what I couldn't understand is why he left her for using spaces and not for using vim.
21:11
@DavidCarlisle Exactly. He should have been afraid of never getting out of the relationship.
21:54
@AlanMunn -- I guess I'd better watch out going down stairs.
@DavidCarlisle -- I guess I'm in a major minority. There are times when tabbing is useful, but I don't have a current example. (But I still use plain TeX too. Like for the TUGboat calendar.)
@EmanueleNardi -- Oh, dear! I'm one of those people who think that dragons have gotten a bum rap. I subscribe to the McCaffrey view of the species.
