6:40 AM
i.stack.imgur.com/njHUK.png is it correct for depicting the number hierarchy from natural to complex numbers?

user19161
6:52 AM
@ガベージコレクタ What is I?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Note that there are two definitions of the naturals in use: one includes 0 and the other excludes 0.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I don't think I is a standard symbol whatever you may mean with it.

7:11 AM
@JasperLoy: it is my drawing for number hierarchy from natural to complex sets.
@JasperLoy: So what is the standard symbol for imaginary set?
@JasperLoy: Also what is the standards symbol for irrational set?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I do not know of any standard notation for irrational numbers or purely imaginary numbers (complex numbers with zero real part).

@JasperLoy: OK. Thanks. I will be in Singapore tomorrow. Do you want to meet me? :-)

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ You can just use R-Q to represent irrational numbers and Ri to represent purely imaginary numbers, since they are real numbers that are not rational numbers and real numbers multiplied by i respectively.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Hmm, let me think about it.

@JasperLoy: No. I have no confidence. :-)

user19161
7:24 AM
@ガベージコレクタ What is this confidence thing about? Are you like extremely shy or something?

@JasperLoy: Exactly.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Oh OK, then never mind.

@JasperLoy: Did you study in NUS?
or NTU?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Yes, but let's not talk about that now. =) Anyway, I am glad you like pstricks too, like me!

I want to master PSTricks and plain TeX first then TikZ as TikZ is necessary for annotations in documents typeset by pdflatex.
i need tikz just for annotation purpose.

user19161
7:29 AM
@ガベージコレクタ I am content with knowing LaTeX.

@JasperLoy: What does it mean?
@JasperLoy: Oh i see. the content has different meaning.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I mean I am happy just knowing LaTeX and don't need to know plain TeX.

@JasperLoy: It is not enough for package writers.
@JasperLoy: I will creat a package named JasperLoy :D

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ By the way, it seems to me that most people doing set theory include 0 as a natural number. It's more convenient that way. Bourbaki also includes 0. I also like to include it myself. But some people equate the natural numbers to the positive integers.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I still don't understand why I am special to you. I am nobody, just someone with a tragic story which I shall not reveal here. =)

7:34 AM
@JasperLoy: I see. Are ...,-4,-2,0 even numbers?
@JasperLoy: I also don't understand.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Well, it all depends on what definition you want to use. If one is working with the positive integers only, even would mean 2,4,6,... . If one is working with all integers, even could include the negative counterparts as well.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ Maybe we knew each other in a previous life and share a kammic connection. =)

@JasperLoy: Maybe. :-)
@JasperLoy: Singapore mathematics books seem to be well-written.

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ I might share more with you in future via email, and I hope you do so as well.

@JasperLoy: I will meet you in the future TeX conference in Singapore :-)

user19161
7:38 AM
@ガベージコレクタ I have no comments on that. =)

@JasperLoy: Have Singapore been the TeX conference place ?
@JasperLoy: Why did you leave?

user19161
@ガベージコレクタ No idea, and I don't care. I don't like to live here, but I shan't say more. OK, I am off. See you!

@JasperLoy: you can live in Bali, Indonesia.
@JasperLoy: Do you want to teach mathematics in a high school ?

1 hour later…
9:08 AM
Short summary of yesterday's meeting

9:26 AM
@JosephWright You got mail. :)

@PauloCereda Are your slides available? By the way, I have strong objections on your pronunciation of "frontespizio". :)

@egreg Uh-oh. :) I'm sorry, I'll improve my pronunciation. :) Joseph will add the slides together with the audio in a video, but I'll send you the slides right now. :)

@JosephWright ooh! :)

I'm going to work on the talks one at a time, and also try to find somewhere to host them!
I might start with the ones with no slides :-)

9:36 AM
@JosephWright How about an Youtube or Vimeo account for UK-TUG? :)

@PauloCereda Might work

@JosephWright Thanks!
@JosephWright Spam here: tex.stackexchange.com/a/78507/4427

9:55 AM
@egreg Zapped

@JosephWright One of the first editors I used on the Mac had the peculiar habit of adding mysterious characters from time to time, so there was the "Zap Gremlins" menu entry.

Audio/video processing may take a while: I need to play things through a few times, so it will need a few days for me to do everything
I did not quite get the mic set up right, by the look of things, so not all of the sound is quite how I wanted it :-(
Listening back to some random selections, the sound is not too bad. Which talk do people want me to process first?

@JosephWright @PauloCereda

@DavidCarlisle :-)

10:11 AM
@JosephWright well not :-) I think that's probably the most widely relevant talk at present time the Pi ones may be the future (or may not:-) and mine was the ramblings of an old-timer...

@DavidCarlisle The Pi ones have no video, so I need to come up with some 'filler'

@JosephWright You could use the video that Simon showed from his Pi....

@DavidCarlisle I'll start with @PauloCereda's then. I need to run it through twice I guess, once to clean up the audio and a second time to add the video.
@DavidCarlisle :-)
Vimeo account established: vimeo.com/uktug
No videos yet: other things to do this morning

10:48 AM
@egreg thanks for teh typo correctshun

user19161
11:35 AM
@stefan I saw your book. I hope the publisher chooses nicer fonts for the next edition. =)

12:12 PM
@JosephWright Don't worry! :) I'll process them with Audacity, may I? :)

@PauloCereda You'll want the raw data uploading to Dropbox, then?

@JosephWright Yep, I'll use them. :)
@JosephWright: could you give me the link to the other audios? :)

@PauloCereda I'll upload one at a time and let you know

@JosephWright Ah OK. :) I'll work with mine and David's. :)

user19161
So how was the talk for everyone? Good? I hope the food was good!

12:20 PM
@PauloCereda Upload proving a bit tricky

@DavidCarlisle Your wellcome.

@JasperLoy Well, it's the font used in the whole series of his beginner's guides, no exception just because the content is about LaTeX. I hope the publisher will decide not to use low res bitmap images for printing next time instead of provided pdf files.

user19161
@StefanKottwitz Oh OK. Next time choose another publisher. =)

user19161
@egreg Sorry to interrupt your theorems, but it is "welcome". =)

@JasperLoy Look at the referenced line. :)

user19161
12:34 PM
@egreg Oh...

@JasperLoy That's clear, it's already decided :-)

@egreg Let's make him say frontespizio 100 times. :)

@PauloCereda IPA transcription: /frontesˈpittsjo/
@JosephWright Spam again (same nickname)
@JosephWright And again: tex.stackexchange.com/a/78529/4427

The answer would be RTFM

user19161
@egreg On ELU, I invented another term: CTFD. Check the f dictionary!

12:53 PM
@JosephWright: uploading new David's mp3 to my Dropbox account. :)
We could get some funny bits of all talks and make an autotune!
Or a ringtone!

1:08 PM
@egreg ooh! :)
@JosephWright: dl.dropbox.com/u/74558210/David-Carlisle2.mp3 Is this version a little better? :)

2 hours later…
2:51 PM
I'm working on @PauloCereda's recording. I've done the audio clean-up, now doing the screen recording, will then recombine the two!

@JosephWright Is it working? :)

3:27 PM
@PauloCereda Slides recorded: now need to install iMovie and do the merge

@JosephWright Which Mac version are you using? :)

@PauloCereda 10.7.5

@JosephWright I think you might already have iMovie. :)

@PauloCereda No
@PauloCereda Might have been on the DVD, but that was for a previous OS X version

@JosephWright I see. Maybe it's free in the Apple Store.

3:31 PM
@PauloCereda £10.50

@JosephWright Oh no!
:(
My ML came with iMovie, that's why I thought it would be a default thing.

@PauloCereda Like I said, I had the DVD version for 10.5, but I suspect that won't work with 10.7
Still have it, in the box, of course

@JosephWright :(
Sorry for suggesting iMovie. :(

@PauloCereda It's fine
@PauloCereda I'm happy to try this out
Importing slides now: may need to try to deal with one glitch (I made one mess-up changing the slides)
Can you grab from video camera direct to iMovie?

@JosephWright I think so, iMovie has something called Events, where you organize your videos.
The sounds are managed by iTunes.

3:46 PM
@PauloCereda How exactly do I add the audio?

@JosephWright You need to import it to iTunes first, then it will be available in iMovie.

@PauloCereda I have it in the iTunes list, but trying to drag onto the 'events' fails
Ah, got it!

@JosephWright I forgot to mention, it's another panel. :)
I'm sure you'll like iMovie. :)

Creating first movie now
I've not worried about my slight mess-up: hopefully for a first attempt it will look OK
Right, process is claiming 30 minutes, then the upload
If all looks good, next is @DavidCarlisle
Next year: video :-)

4:06 PM
@JosephWright How did it look in the preview?

@PauloCereda Only looked at a few bits, but fine

@JosephWright :)

@PauloCereda I'll hold onto the source stuff and perhaps try to tidy it up a bit more once I've got the hang of it

@JosephWright :)

I need to get some artwork for the audio-only 'talks'
Something to do with raspberries and pies :-)

4:08 PM
@JosephWright Do you some photos, don't you? :)

@PauloCereda Not really, no. I had quite a lot to do yesterday!

@JosephWright Oh. :( I was gonna suggest a photo slideshow. :)

@PauloCereda I'll consult with the appropriate speakers

4:37 PM
Yay, Norway! :)

Q: Can I Import honey to Norway?

Nikola MaleševićMy mother has a few beehives and she is producing honey for home use. I am traveling to Norway in a few days and I'd like to bring one jar (1 kg) of honey to my friend there. I am a resident of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is not part of EEA. I've found this document, but I think this is relate...

Video uploaded: waiting for Vimeo to process

@JosephWright Cool! :)

5:00 PM
@JosephWright: I'm also a Vimeo fan, maybe this info might be interesting:
How many videos can I upload?

You can upload up to 5 videos at a time as long as they don't exceed your weekly upload quota.

Basic account users can upload 500 MB a week (with a max of 10 files per day). Plus users can upload 5 GB per week, and there is no per-day upload limit.

This quota resets weekly, and your personal reset day can be seen on the right side of the Upload Page, along with how much space you have remaining this week. Videos that you upload remain on the site, so you can upload 500 MB of videos this week, and another 500 MB next week, and they'll all be there for the wat

hey guys
anyone here

@Nyfer Hello! :)

hey what kind of questions i can ask here??

@Nyfer In chat or on TeX-sx?

in chat

5:15 PM
@JosephWright: I have a question: is the lion in the UK-TUG webpage is a famous monument?

@Nyfer Anything you like
@PauloCereda It's by the London Eye

ok i have some difficulty reg latex and i need help.

@Nyfer Fire away

@JosephWright ooh!

@PauloCereda We've used the image since before I joined UK-TUG

5:19 PM
@JosephWright Cool! :)

my question is here

http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/78554/show-image-on-slides

please have a look at it

5:36 PM
i'm a bit confused about this one

Q: Connecting normal lines with decorated ones

PacoI've got a problem, I've tried it a lot and I've investigated about it but I haven't found the answer. I've got a code like this.... \documentclass{article} \usepackage{tikz} \usetikzlibrary{decorations.pathmorphing} \begin{document} \begin{tikzpicture} \draw[very thick, latex-] (0,8) -- (0,...

@JosephWright: Fantastic! The video is up! :)

@PauloCereda Yes, just trying to get it to play for me

@JosephWright It's playing for me, it looks fine. :)

@PauloCereda Also looks good here now

@JosephWright :)
@Joseph: maybe replacing the title of the video? :)

5:41 PM
@PauloCereda @JosephWright hi guys :) are you discussing videos of TUG?

Next is @DavidCarlisle's video. I need to do the run through to get the slides sorted
@cmhughes UK-TUG meeting videos

@JosephWright sweet; will they be available for everyone, or would we need a password?

@JosephWright I see that the screen recording worked marvelously. :)

It turns out to be quite easy to do this, but I think next year I'll try to get the video recorded too
@cmhughes Open access
I've got about half a dozen recordings to sort out. They will take a while, as I need to listen though to sort out the slides (which we did not record). Next year, I'm asking for a video camera and VGA input splitter :-)
I hope I can sort David's talk later this evening (I have to go out for a couple of hours)

How about the pattern "UK-TUG 2012 Speaker Meeting - <title here>"? :)
@JosephWright Yay, a splitter! :)
@JosephWright Did you take a look at my new mp3 on David's talk? :)

5:46 PM
@PauloCereda Good plan: sorting now

Personally, I like Vimeo. Seems way cleaner than Youtube. :)

Title updated, new thumbnail chosen
I still have to try out dealing with my mess up in changing pages: perhaps once I've done all of the 'first round' of uploads

@JosephWright :)

@PauloCereda am watching your video: vimeo.com/51860022 it's brilliant! :)

@cmhughes /blushes it's all Joseph's fault. :)

5:49 PM
@PauloCereda it's superb :)

@JosephWright: you have done a wonderful job with iMovie! :)

@PauloCereda A splitter and microphone really would be handy. I'll think about asking the committee

@JosephWright Agreed. Both are lifesavers. :)
@Joseph: I have this one here: behringer.com/EN/Products/C-1U.aspx It just requires a USB cable and it's ready to go. :)

6:07 PM
@PauloCereda “I'll try my best to fit my talk into the 20-minute time frame.” (Video length: 32:11) :D
7
@cmhughes I'm more concerned with the should-be-a-comment answer by a second account. Forgetting his password after less than five minutes …

6:24 PM
Hey, anyone around? What are the default margines with 12pt article? I'd rather not print off a page and use a ruler to measure them.

:6581274 \documentclass[12pt]{article}
\usepackage{layout}
\begin{document}
\layout
\end{document}

@TorbjørnT. tests

6:48 PM
@PauloCereda I agree with cmhughes; nice job!

7:28 PM
Sorry for my interruption. For those who have written commercial books: What is the average profit or loyalty per book? :-)
@JasperLoy: Hi!

7:46 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel the talk is only 29, rest is discussion ;)
@Paulo nice talk, and really convenient English accent :)

@tohecz Well then!

@Paulo Yeah, and +1 for the color scheme and design in general, it looks really pretty pretty.

1 hour later…
8:52 PM
Ah, marcos. Preventing me from having to copy and past hard to spell words.
''\newcommand{\bia}{Biagioli}''

@Canageek Bia<C-p>

@tohecz Oh, emacs autocompleate?

ctrl+p in vim gives auto-completion

@tohecz I'm using TeXStudio right now, and use emacs when using math.

I haven't heard about a text editor called emacs :p

8:56 PM
@tohecz Try under OS

@Canageek ROTFLMAO this joke is soo old and soo good!

@tohecz That would probably be a better way, but I really don't like writing in emacs; something about the way it shows non-code text sets my teeth on edge.

try vim really

@Canageek TeXstudio can Ctrl+Space on normal text, too.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Cool, thanks.

1 hour later…
10:06 PM
Cool, a chat - i was unaware of that. Hi @ All

@Johannes Hi, Johannes. It happens that we talk about TeX here, when not too busy with soccer or cricket. :)

1 hour later…
11:18 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel LOL
@GonzaloMedina, @tohecz: Thanks, guys. :)
