12:10 AM
@egreg Have you thought of any examples or modifications/caveat to be added to that blog please?

12:31 AM
hey @PeterGrill
I'm not sure how this point system is working in tikz :s
I don't understand how the y coordinates of the graphs I'm plotting with \addplot [red!80!white, samples=30, domain=0:6,shift={(0,10)}] {e*exp(x)}; relate to the y coordinates used in something like \draw[decoration={random steps,segment length=3pt,amplitude=0.5pt},line join=round] (1.2679,5.5206)
Hell, I don't even know if the x coordinates are the same as what I want
How do people know the exact coordinates to place labels and stuff? How can I find that based from an equation of a plot?

12:50 AM
@PeterGrill McMaster
@PeterGrill No worries, I'm listening to a lecture, so I'm so to respond.

1:01 AM
is anybody here familiar with plotting things in tikz?
I'm so confused by the coordinate system and I can't find any useful resources :s

@Gnintendo What about the pgfplots package?

I'm using the pgfplots package, and after I plot something
I don't understand how it's scaling the y axis
it always moves the line so it intercepts at 0,0, then I don't understand how it's scaling the y
for instance, when I do this: \addplot [red!80!white, samples=30, domain=0:6] {e^x};
it seems to immediately scale the y axis on the order of hundreds, but keep the units I would use for placing labels and stuff on the order of numerals

Erm … two things: 1. can you type up a MWE? 2. What are you trying to achieve anyway?

@Gnintendo Hmmm, @josephwrite wrote documenation for that, but I forget where. TUGBoat I think?

T.T
well, for one
how do I control the scaling of the y-axis?
domain seems to control the scaling of the x-axis

1:10 AM
@Gnintendo Here is what I did: pastebin.com/kfxEW7N6

@Gnintendo You have the keys ymax and ymin.

@Canageek @Qrrbrbirlbel OK, I got that now. Now how do I know where to place a label relative to a graph. EG: if I know the points on a graph, how do I convert that to the points I need to place a label?

@Gnintendo No idea. I wrote this last year, don't remeber it at all
@Gnintendo Found the article I used as a guide: www.tug.org/TUGboat/tb31-1/tb97wright-pgfplots.pdf

still not sure
@Qrrbrbirlbel Do you understand what I'm asking?

page 56 sets a few label, I think

1:21 AM
I want to do something like: \draw[decorate] (7,9) to[bend left] (3,5) node[below] {downhill};
but the 7,9 doesn't correspond to the points on the graph
how do I find out what the points 7,9 are relative to what I need

do you have the code for the path?

Yes
the path is \addplot [red!80!white, samples=30, domain=0:6] {e^x};

Try \draw[decorate] (axis cs:7,9) to[bend left] (axis cs:3,5) node[below] {downhill};
(By the way, neither 7,9 nor 3,5 are on e^x …)

@Qrrbrbirlbel I know, they were just arbitrary points for an example
@Qrrbrbirlbel It throws an error about a missing \encsname or something
\endcsname*
and doesn't compile

This must go inside the axis environment.
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}
\draw[decorate,->] (axis cs:7,9) to[bend left] (axis cs:3,5) node[below] {downhill};
\end{axis}
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}
Compiles.

1:27 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel <3
@Qrrbrbirlbel How do I change the size of the text?

[below,font=\large] or directly into {\large downhill} for example

@Canageek Hmm. Not sure why I thought you were in Ottawa.

@PeterGrill I lived in Deep River once....

@Gnintendo Try just for fun:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\usetikzlibrary{arrows}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}
\pgfmathparse{e^6}
\draw[decorate,-triangle 60,thick] (axis cs:0,1) to[bend left] node[pos=.5,auto] {\Large Up we go!} (axis cs:6,403.428795) ;
\end{axis}
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

@Gnintendo Looks like you got your answer: (axis cs x, y)

1:34 AM
yeah
how do I add axis titles normally?

xlabel=$x$?

oh, cool
and how do I make it not draw any horizontal lines on the y axis at all?

Maybe you should take a look in the manual?

oh, xlabel and ylabel put it in a weird spot?
fixed that ^

There are so many options described in the pgfplots manual.
And examples.

1:45 AM
I can't put the ylabel where I want without adding a line to the top and right
:s

\begin{axis}[xlabel=$x$,ylabel=$y$, axis x line=bottom, axis y line=left] for example?

@Qrrbrbirlbel Hmm, yes, but now my code to remove the axis arrows stopped working :s
I was doing:
%every inner x axis line/.append style={-},
%every inner y axis line/.append style={-},

What did you do before do not have the box?

I was doingaxis x line=bottom,
axis y line=left,
err
axis x line=middle,
axis y line=middle,
I was doing this ^
@Qrrbrbirlbel

2:00 AM
(A side note: domain is for the part that is calculated/plot; xmax, xmin, ymax and ymin is for the range of the axises (?).)
So, you want the axis to go through the origin (0,0)

(right, figured that out)
um, ideally yes
plus not have arrows

you don't want arrows for the axes
and where should the labels be? ($x$ and $y$)
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pgfplots}
\usetikzlibrary{arrows,calc}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\begin{axis}[
xmin=-.5,
xmax=6.5,
ymin=-20,
ymax=420,
xlabel=$x$,
ylabel=$y$,
axis x line=middle,
axis y line=middle,
every inner x axis line/.append style={-},
every inner y axis line/.append style={-},
every axis x label/.style={at={($(current axis.right of origin)+(10pt,0)$)}},
every axis y label/.style={at={($(current axis.above origin)+(0,10pt)$)}}

the labels should be below x and to the left of y axis respectively'
@Qrrbrbirlbel I can't seem to get it to stay below the x axis and to the left of the y axis while getting rid of the arrows

every axis x label/.style={at={($(current bounding box.south)+(0,-5pt)$)}},

and I can't get your lines like this to work: "every axis x label/.style={at={($(current axis.right of origin)+(10pt,0)$)}},"

2:09 AM
usetikzlibrary calc
And don't mess up the ({}) ;)

that last one worked

Take a look at the package's manual section 4.18
page 270

every axis y label/.style={at={($(current bounding box.west)+(-5pt,0)$)}}, doesn't display the letters vertically :s

Oh, I see .... rotate=+90 :D

where does that go :s

2:12 AM
every axis y label/.style={rotate=90,at={($(current bounding box.west)+(-5pt,0)$)}}
I have to say that I have done 1 (in words: one) plot …

ok
one more major question
I have ytick=\empty, and that works for getting rid of all the lines on the plot on the y axis without the x axis

PGF/TikZ/pgflots are great but the manuals … Ctrl+F is more helpful than ToC and Index :\

but if I later do every tick/.style={thick,black,decorate}
then it complains that it can't decorate a non-existing tick or whatever, even though some do exist on the x-axis

Hm, no one's complaining here.

so, is there a different way I should get rid of the y ticks?
>.<

2:18 AM
What is different with your code? That one has compiled without a problem.
(Although I am not very fond of the label's placement.)

I have:
\begin{axis}[%
ymax=60,
ymin=0,
xmax=4,
xmin=0,
ylabel=liklihood to use word,
xlabel=minutes into class,
every tick/.style={thick,black,decorate},
xtick={1,2,3},
xticklabels={10,20,30},
ytick=\empty,
axis x line=middle,
axis y line=middle,
every inner x axis line/.append style={-},
every inner y axis line/.append style={-},
every axis x label/.style={at={($(current bounding box.south)+(0,-5pt)$)}},
every axis y label/.style={rotate=90,at={($(current bounding box.west)+(-5pt,0)$)}},
decoration={random steps,segment length=5pt,amplitude=0.3pt},decorate,
it complains that it can't decorate an empty path

Yeah, I hadn't the decoration part in my code, so there was none.

Oh
how do I account for that, then
I didn't think that's what the problem was since I didn't have to remove that bit to make the error go away
actually
even if I comment out the decoration line I'm still getting the same error

Erm, I don't

weird....
I fixed it by doing "every x tick"
wheee, now the only thing I need to figure out is how do add a basic plot title
wheeeeeeeeeee

2:30 AM
You can place a node at (current bounding box.north) or something like that
or title=Lorem ipsum
page 163

2:54 AM
thanks for help <3
How do you do a multi line label?
\\ isn't working to break up the label into different lines
@Qrrbrbirlbel Is there something I need to do to break up lines in a axis title?

3:11 AM
@PeterGrill are you around?

@cmhughes Yep am here

@PeterGrill glad you liked my solution- I was a little confused by your comment though? :) which blank lines?

I think you are not supposed to leave a blank line in the .tex before/after display mode equations.
it adds too much vertical space

@PeterGrill agreed... but I don't think I have.... or have I?

you don't have to, and not related to question, but I think it is still good to have things there correctly. up to you...

3:15 AM
@PeterGrill but where are the blank lines? :o

@PeterGrill Do you know the answer to make multi line axes label question?

(that was meant to be a confused face)

before and after ', .
@Gnintendo might need to put in a parbox

I'm not familiar with parboxes?

@PeterGrill ok, found a couple of blank lines after equations; have removed. thanks :)
@PeterGrill when is your interview? ;)

3:19 AM
@Gnintendo I think you should post a question as that will help others with a similar quesiton.

@PeterGrill Well I thought I found an identical question, but the answer didn't work for me
4

My pgfplots ylabel text is too long and looks strange. Can I make it multiline?

then it is even a better question.

@Gnintendo it's ok to follow-up to a question, just make sure you link to the original and state why it didn't work or what makes yours different :)

Oh
now I have to figure out why mine is different/doesn't work :s
ylabel style={align=center},
ylabel=speed\\of\\teaching,

ylabel={speed\\of\\teaching}?

3:24 AM
still nothing

@Gnintendo: @cmhughes makes a good point, it is better to post a question.

Right, I just need to figure out more than "this doesn't work for me" before I post it :s

@Gnintendo that should be sufficient.

3:49 AM
Figured it out :s
making fun of one of my old TAs in jest: gabmedia.org/kwangho.svg
courtesy of tikz :D

4:02 AM
@Gnintendo Ahh, good to see, you succeeded!
I would love to see you final code.

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yeah, I'll show you in a sec :)

Thanks. Looks good by the way. :)

4:17 AM
thanks

4:31 AM
@cmhughes final date not yet set, but sometime after 10/15.

1 hour later…
5:50 AM
@tohecz Indeed

3 hours later…
8:33 AM
I don't know why this question reminds me of the Italian word "obbrobrio" (disgrace, awful thing); the adjective "obbrobrioso" can be translated into "dreadful". :) Maybe the allitteration?
6

In HTML, all I would have to do is: This is line one <br>.<br>.<br> This is line two to get the following output: This is line one . . This is line two I've been playing around with \\ and \newline but can't get it to work. Can someone provide a working example? UPDATE: ...

I can't seem to find a question on here that details the differences between inline and display math. The best I can find is egreg's answer for displaystyle, dfrac, dcases? Should we have a separate question that details the differences between the two?
@egreg :-) To many brs.

@egreg Gives me the shivers.

@PeterGrill do you mean the difference between \displaystyle and \textstyle or the difference between $$and (or both)? @DavidCarlisle : The latter: inline math vs display math. I don't just mean the sizing issue, but also placement. Was looking for such a question to add as a reference for How to make the limit (mathematics) sign?. 8:52 AM @PeterGrill That's not really a user visible difference in latex, for example \[ uses$$ or $depending on whether fleqn is loaded @DavidCarlisle Yes getting into the different modes is one thing, but the fact that for example the where the indexes of summation, limits are placed is different, etc... I think there should be clear answer so that we can refer newer users to it. I guess \displaystyle, \textstyle, \scrtiptstyle, \scrtipscrtipstyle, etc are related. @PeterGrill That's why I asked, limit placement and size of big operators is \\displaystyle verses \textstyle thing not related to inline or display math @DavidCarlisle After thiking about it I guess the two are too much related and should be handled together. @AndrewStacey: Have tweaked title of question on Meta, Is that any clearer? 9:29 AM @PeterGrill Yes, that's clearer. 10:24 AM @egreg Too much br[azilians]. :) 10:39 AM A question @MarcoDaniel must ask himself quite often How fast would you have to go in your car to run a red light claiming that it appeared green to you due to the Doppler Effect? @DavidCarlisle That's just around 100000 km/s, or 360000000 km/h: @MarcoDaniel can do it, but only on the Autobahn. They should have thought of this when they assigned the red to "stop" and green to "go". Think of an epic VW 1960 Beetle. :P 10:56 AM @PauloCereda Herbie rides again @egreg No they don't have traffic lights on the autobahn, he'll need to do it in town. @DavidCarlisle Yay! :) 53! 11:23 AM @DavidCarlisle The speed limit in town is 50 km/h (~30 mi/h) and @MarcoDaniel is German. No chance to use that excuse. :) By the way, the needed speed is 223693629 mi/h, in case you didn't grasp the km/h. 12:09 PM @egreg That's a speed I can cope with. :) @DavidCarlisle maybe you'd like to correct the typo in your last comment here: tex.stackexchange.com/q/74993/11002 "don't use the ytwp letter font commands" @tohecz typi cirectod @DavidCarlisle tahnks 1:11 PM 0 After a year of using LaTeX I've become fairly comfortable with troubleshooting common errors. But then again, what is intermediate. Probably there are several areas where one is a beginner, but quite a few where they are "advanced" users... :) @DavidCarlisle I smell \tikzmark here. I would make his title "Beginners to intermediate manuals" or something of the like @zeroth Indeed. It's walking on thin ice. :) @PauloCereda yes! :) Generalization of such questions can easily become a list of all possible manuals, in which case the dublicate @AndrewStacey pointed at is very sufficient! So maybe that is the way to go. @ℝaphink What if you want to divide the available space 35% at the left and 65% at the right? How many \hfill do you need? Seven at the left and thirteen at the right. No, thanks. I contend that \noindent x\hspace{\stretch{.35}}y\hspace{\stretch{.65}}z\par is easier. ;-) And I don't want to do the math for 34% and 66%. :) Well, this is easy: 17 and 33. :) Idea: \ExplSyntaxOn\noindent x\prg_replicate:nn {17}{\hfill}y\prg_replicate:nn{33}{\hfill}z\par\ExplSyntaxOff. 1:32 PM @PauloCereda We need a migration path from meta.tex to main.tex and than we can close it as a dupe ;) 1:52 PM @tohecz I had the last vote as offtopic (the question is now closed), but I thought a migration path would appear for me. :) @egreg: Good point :-) @egreg: I usually have simple use cases, but indeed your example makes the point. 2:16 PM @AndrewStacey In the end I couldn't bring myself ti use tikz Is there a Mac OS X PDF viewer that can cope with layers (as in tex.stackexchange.com/q/74877/86) ? @DavidCarlisle One day you will embrace your inner TikZ. 2:45 PM 0 There are 1365 questions using integration; of those, 44 questions have been closed. But it's "integrating by parts", not "integrating different parts". Should I edit the question? @egreg I think we should condescend to educate the masses, don't you? @AndrewStacey I've just finished my first lecture on "fundaments of mathematics" for the future elementary school teachers. I mainly talked about "equality", which is a rather difficult concept for the layman. The title of the course is somewhat pretentious, but I didn't choose it. 4:34 PM @egreg The slides were typeset in TeX, I suppose. :) @PauloCereda Mais naturellement! 7:38 PM
@StefanKottwitz Indeed. :)

8:09 PM

Hello friends.
Oooh! Hi @Stefan. Long time no see. How are you doing?
feeling sleepy I'll be here later folks.

@KannappanSampath Hi! I'm fine, thanks. Just a bit busy with work and family (baby :-) but life is good. How is it for you?

8:27 PM
@PauloCereda thank you! :-)
and thank to Enrico

@FrancescoEndrici I'm the one to thank you in the first place. :) For using arara since day one. :)
@Francesco: now our plan is to write a nice ArsTeXnica article an lure Claudio Beccari to use it too. :P

8:43 PM
hello

@leo Hello! :)

I'm getting better at this whole tikz graph thing :D :
now if I could just place the title in a box :s
hmph.

@PauloCereda Can you check my comment to that question?

@percusse Thanks for the guidelines to do that, by the way

@StefanKottwitz That looks like the Reason music software view when you press the TAB key :D
@Gnintendo No problem but to do what I didn't get it
oh you mean the plot

8:52 PM
to make xkcd-style graphs
yeah.

no problem at all

@percusse Indeed, changing the order works. :) Preserving the order, it works with lualatex but not with pdflatex.

glad to see some other person's package having undocumented features highlighted on this site for a change.

@PauloCereda we have to have something to discuss when you are being interviewed

8:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle Oh no! :)

@PauloCereda Do you plan to write your article in italian? :-)
Anyway, I think that it would be very useful! ArsTeXnica is surely one of the most efficient way to learn LaTeX here

I like Herbert's new avatar. Epic giant chair. :)
@FrancescoEndrici In Italian? :) I'm not ready for that. :) It has to be in (my poor) English. :)
