@DavidCarlisle I am a bit disappointed you did not name it ypdftex, I mean "why pdftex" ...

@mickep We had a few names - this is a working title ;)
@mickep @DavidCarlisle I wonder if we might end up with x-pdftex for ... reasons

@JosephWright Ooh, so not too late, then. :)

9:48 AM
I suggest quack-tex - this way one could have conversations like "Did you quack the document often enough? I quacked two times. You need at least 3 quacks!" :)

10:27 AM
@samcarter I think you need to re-quack that document.

@mickep yes, re-quacking is always the solution :)

@samcarter would it produce dinner files instead of dvi?

@DavidCarlisle ... maybe a command line option with which you can specify if you'd like breakfast or dinner?
(and beamer's \pause macro generates small snacks for in between)

@samcarter --shell-escape

@DavidCarlisle :) :) :)
This will also make sure users will properly debug their code and not ignore errors - who wants bugs on their dinner plate :P

@DavidCarlisle ;-))))

BTW, given that things are very quiet here: anybody knows why the option NewCommands to ragged2e makes underfull boxes with every caption? See tex.stackexchange.com/a/672636/38080

6:53 PM
@Rmano the package doesn't like short lines:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[NewCommands]{ragged2e}
\begin{document}
\centering
abc
\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer Wow. So probably better not to use NewCommands, thanks... in principle, the only thing changed should be that hyphenation is possible, but it seems that there are collateral effects ;-)

@Rmano yes

@Rmano it doesn't really enable hyphenation, you would get hyphenation with the standard \centering too if the line can't break without it, it is more that if forces hyphenation by telling tex that small margins are required.

@UlrikeFischer yes, you're right, I should have said "hyphenation more probable". It works well in tabular cells (and without warning, if I remember correctly). Seems not appropriate for normal typesetting, though.

@Rmano you would get warnings in tabular too, if the cell is not filled enough.

7:11 PM
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[NewCommands]{ragged2e}
\begin{document}

{\centering
1abc

}

{
\CenteringLeftskip 0pt plus .5\hsize
\CenteringRightskip 0pt plus .5\hsize
\centering
2abc

}

{
\hbadness10000\emergencystretch\hsize
\centering
3abc

}
\end{document}
@Rmano 2 and 3 don't warn (although 2 perhaps removes most of the functionality)

7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle @UlrikeFischer I see, thanks. Probably in tabular is less common because the columns where I use ragged2e are normally quite small...

@Rmano default is \CenteringRightskip\z@\@plus\tw@ em so if the natural width of the text is within 4em of the column width, the problem does not arise

@DavidCarlisle Found the “poor man's interchartoks” I mentioned in my email just now: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/41?m=49002020#49002020

@HenriMenke Oooh
@HenriMenke xxetex?

Nice room

10:05 PM
@HenriMenke you should have a message from github
@JosephWright yes
