Two quick questions for anyone online: 1) my document gives me a warning "Command \scriptsize invalid in math mode" every time I use the command, despite the command doing what it's supposed to; and 2) my document gives me a warning "Command \i invalid in math mode" every time I use the command, despite the command doing what it's supposed to.
Any ideas on how to kill the warnings?

2018
2019
2020
@COTO use \imath instead of \i, and use \scriptstyle instead of \scriptsize, or, most likely better use {\scriptsize$<stuff>$} for inline maths.

7:53 AM
@Skillmon you could go back to 1985 if you wanted a longer list
@COTO don't kill the warnings, fix the wrong markup. font size commands are invalid in math maode and \i is a text command (\imath is for math)

8:14 AM
quack

@PauloCereda Hmm

@JosephWright hmmm

@PauloCereda baa!
@PauloCereda hey, have you seen Pocoyo? :p

@Plergux hi sheep person! <3
@Plergux no...

@PauloCereda What? youtu.be/ixMUdYubMHk (my daughter LOVED Pocoyo). :-)

8:26 AM
@Rmano OMG

@JosephWrigh Sorry for the late reply. I just got a notification from SO that you pinged me a couple of days ago regarding a question on dvisvgm. I'm currently quite busy but can keep an eye on the chat.

ooh Pato, el pato
I like this already
Although friendly, Pato is the most fussy and impatient character (indicated by his beak that bends in an angle when disappointed or shocked); on occasion he completely loses his temper, jumping up and down and quacking furiously with his beak spinning rapidly. He is used as a jackhammer or missile and can become a helicopter.

@Skillmon yes I also think that this has not changed. The fact that $pV=MRT$ looked strange (much more space after M than between R and T) is not new.

[...] can become a helicopter.
ooh

@PauloCereda Ah, Pato! He's so funny. I watched Pocoyo in English because Stephen Fry narrates it. It's brilliant. :D

8:37 AM
@Plergux ooh

@PauloCereda It's for very little kids so it's not exactly mentally challenging, but way better than the bloody Teletubbies. :p

@Plergux agreed! :)
@Plergux also, George loves Mr. Dinosaur

@PauloCereda Raaaawr! Dinosaur!

@Plergux <3

9:09 AM
@Plergux Just right for @PauloCereda then.

@DavidCarlisle oh

@DavidCarlisle quack! :p

@Plergux breakfast

@DavidCarlisle yes, I know. I just wanted to provide easier to compare (because trimmed the same way) images with bigger resolution. Just to wipe away any doubts.

@Skillmon it won't persuade the OP:-)
@Skillmon actually I wonder if @egreg could repeat the mf debugging he did teh other day, the italic correction is ver small here

9:22 AM
@DavidCarlisle I guess so. I don't even know why I did this.

@DavidCarlisle I don't think that the metrics for CM fonts have changed in the last 30 years.

@Martin At the moment, probably not much happening; I might come back to you a bit later!

@egreg I think what David meant is, is the small italic correction between RT also due to a bug like the other one you found a few days ago?

@JosephWright YEEEEEES
ooh a sheep driving a firetruck
2
@Plergux ^^

9:34 AM
@PauloCereda :D I think I've probably seen all these.

Helicopter reversing
What kind of talk is this

@JosephWright Ok, no problem. You can also reach me by email (martin dot gieseking at uos dot de).

Drat, I was supposed to work on important albatross stuff, now I am watching Peppa Pig. :D

@PauloCereda :)

ooh a loopity loop

9:42 AM
@UlrikeFischer The M has serifs that protrude quite a lot, contrary to R. As far as I can see there's a very little italic correction for \nu.

I am really sad to miss that... -- Daddy Pig is a bloody liar
@Plergux @JosephWright ^^

@PauloCereda LOL

@egreg as far as I got it the OP is mainly complaining about the small italic correction after R (which is much smaller than the one of M or T.

@UlrikeFischer I think Knuth wanted that way.

@Plergux ooh then his pants will be on fire, according to some experts. Then the firetruck sheep will save him!

9:46 AM
@PauloCereda :D

@UlrikeFischer Hi Ulrike, what do you think about this issue? tex.stackexchange.com/q/574170/2891 I think that OP has somehow broken Miktex installation, but I cannot test it.

@egreg quite but :
(CHARACTER C R
   (CHARWD R 0.75929)
   (CHARHT R 0.683332)
   (CHARIC R 0.007726)
.008pt italic correction isn't really worth having at all, I wondered if that was in fact the intended value

@michal.h21 I can run a test with an image. Which command line call should I use?

@UlrikeFischer he got error both with plain htlatex and make4ht, without any options.

@JosephWright Christian will make the --disable-pipes a no-op. Then the behaviour will be in line with texlive.

9:53 AM
@UlrikeFischer Great

10:08 AM
@michal.h21 I don't get it. Why should there be a conversion involved in png?

@UlrikeFischer it really shouldn't. there was similar issue year ago after LaTeX core update, but it was promptly fixed. This is the same issueas this one, I think : tex.stackexchange.com/a/517901/2891 The stra

@michal.h21 ah, then I would suspect that the OP has outdated files somewhere. One need full log-files/terminal outputs then. Btw: you can call extractbb with restricted shell-escape through a pipe, so it is shouldn't be needed to provide an external xbb.

@UlrikeFischer yes, his updated question shows that he has outdated base classes. thanks for assistance :)

@PauloCereda Rawrr
(wow, it's been a long time since my daughters watched Peppa Pig, time flies)

10:23 AM
@Skillmon oh no
@Skillmon let's watch it again :)

@Skillmon Same here, it's all Among Us and SCP's these days. So I just watch Peppa Pig by myself. :p It's a nice silly happy thing that never fails to brighten my day. Like starting the day by listening to Spongebob sing "It's the best day ever." :p

11:05 AM
@UlrikeFischer Good question! I guess ideally red , but honestly I'm not sure how the different stacks might interact

@JosephWright well it is blue. And I would say this is not the expected output. The main question is if this is something dvipdfmx should sort (by integrating the color special into the stacks), or if this means that we will have to change the color backend to use the stacks everywhere (e.g. by using stack 0 for the default).

@UlrikeFischer Hmm

@JosephWright I will ask a question on the dvipdfmx list (but I need first to check if I didn't already asked it ;-).

@UlrikeFischer I think on balance we change things in the .def file for color: now we have multiple stacks, it would be best to use them
@UlrikeFischer Cool: it could of course be a bug, but perhaps first we should ask about stack 0 and the requirement ot init it

@JosephWright it would make sense to use the same syntax for all colors. But I guess that the color specials are used outside of the latex core code too and that probably shouldn't suddently break if we add stack related code.

11:21 AM
@UlrikeFischer Well yes, but I think all 'restored' color uses the mechanisms from dvipdfmx.def; pgf works differently but that is not stacked
@UlrikeFischer LEt's find out what the interaction is supposed to be: it should be documented if one can intermix bc and pdfcolorstack (I suspect not, as bc interprets things like color space)

12:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh testdoc

12:13 PM
@PauloCereda go away, that's work not play

12:25 PM
@PauloCereda ping

@DavidCarlisle One ping only?

@JosephWright apparently

12:43 PM
@PauloCereda At first I read texdoc :)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas does tex have doc ?

@DavidCarlisle texdoc tex :D

$ texdoc tex

Command 'texdoc' not found, but can be installed with:

apt install texlive-base
Please ask your administrator.
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ^^

@DavidCarlisle wsl without texlive?

@DavidCarlisle Who is the Administrator ....

1:02 PM
@DavidCarlisle Maybe you can put texdoc on your wish list for Santa

1:22 PM
Hello, is there a code of etiquette when it comes to posting links to questions in chat? Or should I just go for it?

@Rithaniel If it's a recent question, it will have shown up on the main page if it's a TeX-sx question; are we talking an older question/one from another place?

Well, I posted it within the last 24 hours, so yes, fairly recent
So, you recommend giving it some breathing time?
Also, yes, it is on the Tex-sx

@Rithaniel Yes; it's less than 24h old

@Rithaniel there aren't so many forest experts around. So you will have to wait.

Alright danke schön. I don't post questions very often, so I don't know how quickly to try and move on them
I shall wait

1:31 PM
@UlrikeFischer Does the color stack interface work for you, if we assume it's internal-only but has to 'live' in color unless we give it a decided module?

@JosephWright you mean the new in l3backend? I hadn't have the time to test it. I will try later in the afternoon or evening.

@UlrikeFischer Yes; OK, I'll wait and see
@UlrikeFischer I'll look at the ref stuff then

@JosephWright good ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh we could summon the elite group
@AlanMunn, @cfr forest! forest! forest!

1:57 PM
@JosephWright not me (although actually I was given sudo access this morning so I could be)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@UlrikeFischer no a real linux box, it's good to have a range of available machines to demonstrate various effects:-)

@DavidCarlisle Fedora <3
@Plergux ^^ Baaaaaaaaatman
4

@PauloCereda :D "Bababababababababababa Baaatmaaan!" :p

@DavidCarlisle I would never have guessed that. How can a real linux box survive without tex??

2:08 PM
@Plergux LOL

2:22 PM
@UlrikeFischer it's got emacs so it's OK

@DavidCarlisle vimacapp.com

@PauloCereda Any good>?

@JosephWright Just saw it by accident. :) I try later, if my macOS version is supported. :)

@PauloCereda :)

@JosephWright this is good: github.com/yingDev/Tickeys

2:36 PM
@PauloCereda Can it make duck or sheep noises?

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ooh I think we can add custom sounds

3:03 PM
@UlrikeFischer should I blame @UlrikeFischer ?

3:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle no

3:36 PM
6 hours ago, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle oh

@DavidCarlisle oh

@PauloCereda I can honestly say that she didn't define \AtBeginShipoutOriginalShipout (as no one did)

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@DavidCarlisle what did she do?
@DavidCarlisle oh atbegshi issue

@UlrikeFischer I suppose we could put \let\AtBeginShipoutOriginalShipout\shipout in the emulation package?

3:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh can it run SNES/Famicon ROMs?

@PauloCereda only sinclair zx80

@DavidCarlisle ooh Earl Sinclair
Dinosaurs

@DavidCarlisle first I think we need to see the use case and then ask Frank but better not today; -)

@PauloCereda "Sir Clive"
@UlrikeFischer yes it's a bit hard to see the use case as the MWE doesn't use it with a box at all so you just get a missing box error instead of undefined command error which doesn't seem a great difference

@DavidCarlisle oh

3:56 PM
@PauloCereda If he had been made an earl he'd have been given (the name of) a bit of the country as well "earl of somewhere" you wouldn't use "earl" with a family name, makes you sound like a foreigner:-)

Thanks for the help, @Skillmon, and David.

@DavidCarlisle ooh
earl de parfum

@PauloCereda Seu francês é ainda pior que seu inglês

@DavidCarlisle oh no
Why I CC'ed you in this email:

10% it would be helpful
30% to prove later you knew about this
30% as a power move
30% you're my boss and you'll see I'm working
3

@JosephWright ^^^

4:25 PM
@CarLaTeX Tell them to talk to Frank, @DavidCarlisle and Chris ;)

Jul 18 at 9:55, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle oi

@DavidCarlisle the only real case I found on ctan is in the pagegrid package ;-).
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pagegrid}
\begin{document}
\pagegridsetup{enable,double}
blub
\end{document}

@UlrikeFischer
\let\AtBeginShipoutOriginalShipout\shipout
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{pagegrid}
\begin{document}
\pagegridsetup{enable,double}
blub
\end{document}
better?
@UlrikeFischer oh for @@@ it's one of ours:-)

@DavidCarlisle ;-) Yes, could be a case for the sword. But not today.

@DavidCarlisle Ooops

4:39 PM
@DavidCarlisle ooh \makeatswear
8

@DavidCarlisle that looped for me. Does it work for you?

@UlrikeFischer no It was a trap for you to fall in

@DavidCarlisle oh no

Jun 29 '17 at 16:15, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)

@DavidCarlisle you are... oh

4:45 PM
@DavidCarlisle the trap snapped ... well it looks as if one really should look at it. Mapping it to the original shipout works or less, but gives lots of unclosed group messages.

5:08 PM
@UlrikeFischer eek I suppose we should make it silently work, can look later but you understand hooks (and Heiko) better than me:-)

@DavidCarlisle well the main problem is to understand the current shipout code enough to know where to insert a new page in. I will look later, or we ask Frank.

@yo' Did you see my mail?

yo'
@MarcelKrüger Hi, yep I did, thanks! I was just so overwhelmed at work that I didn't manage to reply :( sorry for that. I'm very tired today, so I plan to reply tomorrow. Thanks again!

5:25 PM
@UlrikeFischer tempted to suggest this as a workaround to teh OP, might even be what we want to do:
\expandafter\let\expandafter\AtBeginShipoutOriginalShipout\csname tex_shipout:D\endcsname

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{atbegshi}

\AtBeginShipoutFirst{%
  \AtBeginShipout{%
    \AtBeginShipoutOriginalShipout\null
  }%
}

\usepackage{blindtext}
\begin{document}
\blinddocument
\end{document}

5:54 PM
@DavidCarlisle the abspage counter is 3, but this probably what is wanted in such a case.

@UlrikeFischer hmm hard to know. depends why the blank page is being thrown I guess

@DavidCarlisle if I rotate the first page (in pdf), the second is rotated too, as it has the same abspage count and so inherits the page attributes.

@UlrikeFischer but what happened in 2019 with the old package

@DavidCarlisle in 2019 you didn't have a "rotate this page" command ;-) I was only trying to figure out how this affects the pdfmanagement. On the whole I think I would prefer if however we fix it, new pages also increases the abspage counter.

6:10 PM
@UlrikeFischer yes I think that would be better.Could of course define it to simply increment the counter and then do \tex_shipout:D but maybe that is a place in the existing shipout chain that we can use.

6:30 PM
@JosephWright :)

6:47 PM
@MarcelKrüger ooh the font expert bloke! Quack!

7:21 PM
@PauloCereda you got mail ...

@UlrikeFischer ooh got it!

8:08 PM
@PauloCereda Yeah, my fear is that it's like Stroustrup for C++: the "definitive" guide but poorly organized and tedious to read. The book you like is the one by Jung?

8:28 PM
@dedded I like it
@dedded The author is ... interesting
@dedded I'd say it is pretty well organised, but @PauloCereda is the Lua expert (or perhaps @MarcelKrüger)
@PauloCereda Have you read the latest edition? Looking at it, I've only got the 2nd

9:08 PM
@JosephWright Well, Jung seems long, about double the pages of Ierusalimschy, a point in Ierusalimschy's favor if all else were equal.

These damn things shouldn't be called "floats" they should be called "flees". Been chasing the damn things all day :<
6

@dedded I find Ierusalimschy nicely focussed

1 hour later…
10:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle No Deal

@JosephWright ... today

@DavidCarlisle Doesn't look good, let's be honest

Good evening or tonight everybody.
@egreg Hi, prof. Please, when you have some time could you take a look at this question of mine for a colleague in math.se? math.stackexchange.com/questions/3942127/… Thank you very much. All the best.

10:56 PM
@Sebastiano Good evening!

@JosephWright no, but if they thought they had a chance of doing a deal, they must have one 99% written and they are just arguing whether to use commas or semicolons, so they could yet pull one out of the hat.
@Plergux The trick to understanding float placement is to accept that if they do not go where you expect, then your expectation is wrong.
4

@DavidCarlisle Also true ... finger crossed

11:17 PM
@StefanKottwitz Hiiiiiiiiii...maybe certainly better good night ahahahahahha
@StefanKottwitz I'm going to sleep. Although I have the day off at school tomorrow, I'm going to rest a bit and go run some errands. In the afternoon I will try to correct the students' homework and I hope to arrive at my birthday on Saturday ahahah...in good shape. I am tired and frustrated with the students.

@Sebastiano So I wish you a good sleep.

@StefanKottwitz If I had to tell you the details there is only to cry. This morning a student who was absent from a written test recovered the test. Since we are in distance learning for the pandemic the same test, despite the quote that the test was only for student X, two other students also took the test. Impressive. And thank goodness that I repeated it at least 5 times.

Life is full of tests.

@StefanKottwitz Yes I am going to sleep. In Sicily habituated to the heat in this period it is cold. I like the warmth of the blankets and I hope to make dreams...of platinum ahahah. I wish you and all users sweet dreams. A very strong hug to everyone....good rest.
@StefanKottwitz I know Stefan but I don't want to do tests. I would like to relax in the Canaries :-) :-) all the besttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
good nighttttt :-)

@Sebastiano good night!

11:40 PM
@Bernard I wanted to give you link to this post on Mathematics Meta: Is this considered “farming”? Since an edit of yours is listed there as an example, I thought you might be possibly interested in it.
I apologize for the message unrelated to the topic of this room - but since I saw some place where I could ping this users, I have used it.

11:57 PM
@MartinSleziak Your ping won't be seen by Bernard, though, since only people who have been recently in the chat can be pinged, and Bernard hasn't.
