Anybody know software to plot 3D plane waves?

2 hours later…
6:55 AM
quack

baa

ooh
@Plergux hi sheep person!

@MoneyOrientedProgrammer I will quote Melvin Sneedly on this one: "I don't get it!" :p
@PauloCereda hi duck person! :D

@Plergux Mark 10:7-8 says that a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. This trigonometric identity states that \cos^2 (x) + \sin^2 (x) = 1. :)

7:09 AM
@PauloCereda \stares blankly

@Plergux spooky and nerd, isn't it? :)

@PauloCereda hahahah! yes. :p

This looks better. :)
I will give a couple of minutes until David says Big breakfast because of two ducks
@UlrikeFischer /poke :)

@PauloCereda in 20 minutes ok?, I'm waiting on someone

@UlrikeFischer oh sure, just poke me... :)

7:27 AM
@PauloCereda Heh heh heh...

1 hour later…
8:35 AM
I have a problem with a latex->pdf creation.
till last week all was fine with the document, but today, after adding a paragraph in chapter 3, I have the following issue:
- chapter 3 is missing said paragraph
- chapter 4 is ignored
- the bibliography is missing (and the references in the text)
- chapters 3 and 4 are missing from the ToC

what could it be?
ok, ignore the above, found the issue

@Federico always when you say "hey, could you come look at this?" it starts working again. :p

@Plergux it's far worse, actually:
Feb 22 '17 at 13:33, by Paulo Cereda
@wilx When David writes an invalid TeX code, the engine apologizes.

@Plergux in this case, it was my brain that needed to start working :D

8:50 AM
@PauloCereda LOL
@Federico Oh yes. Know that feeling. :p But maybe some times by just formulating the problem into a question you've dissected it clearly enough for your brain to go "ding" after a little bit of digesting. :p

@Federico If your brain stopped working, you'd be dead. Trying to use it for thinking, however, is mostly a futile endeavour. It's too busy keeping your body going.

@Plergux yep :D

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Exactly. Which is why I use mine mostly for storing puns and bad jokes from British TV programs. :p

For the vim+vimtex users: github.com/lervag/vimtex/releases/tag/v2.0 yay!

9:24 AM
@Rmano yay!

10:23 AM
with babel, is there any equivalent to \foreignlanguage which is a switching command, not a text command ?

@Maïeul \selectlanguage

no @HaraldHanche-Olsen because \selectlanguage also write in the .toc file, and i do not want that
@HaraldHanche-Olsen

@Maïeul well, that's different. Why is writing in the toc file a problem?

no, that is not different, that was my question, as \foreignlanguage is explicitly defined as "Unlike \selectlanguage this command doesn’t switch everything, it only switches the
hyphenation rules and the extra definitions for the language specified."
I answer to one user, and I will explain why it is problematic, in some cases

@Maïeul \csname otherlanguage*\endcsname should do the same, or the internal \foreign@language, but it depends a lot what you actually want to switch.

10:38 AM
well, that is the problematic I need to deal with my users
Well
that is related to reledpar issues, as usual
explained the problem asked by user, and some of my answer
but the main reason is that user say that too much switiching command in the toc file make a fatal error
I think that is because with 200 pages, with apprxomatibley 35 line by page
we get 30*200*2 = 120 000 line in the toc file only for language switching

@Rmano indeed yay (since I'm currently testrunning on vimtex). I have to admit that I'd like the colours in \ExplSyntaxOn inverted, using Monokai the l3 functions now have a cold blue while variables have a bright pink, I'd prefer the opposite (but only inside the scope of \ExplSyntaxOn and \ExplSyntaxOff). Maybe I'll have to dig a bit through the files to see how I could do this :)

that cause fatal error

@Maïeul yes. Why are you switching languages constantly? The document uses only german, so there should be no need.

@UlrikeFischer I agree that for this user, we should not switch language constntly (that is my point 2)
but as explained, many user use reledpar for two languagues
so in some case, I should, indeed, switch language constantly

@Maïeul yes, but I would say it is a babel bug. It should be easy to store that the language command has already been written and not to do it again. I mean this here writes three lines in the toc:
\documentclass{scrbook}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[german]{babel}
\begin{document}
\tableofcontents

abc\selectlanguage{german} abc \selectlanguage{german}
\end{document}

10:47 AM
Indeed, you are right !
So maybe I will do that
1) keeping the issues opened, to improve language detection in reledpar
2) open an issue on babel repository, mentionning you
3) sens a quickfix for the user

@Maïeul sounds good.

however, I think that in some case, reledpar must switch between two real alternate language constntly, but not writing in the auxiliary files . Because we do not need that, as switching is only for hyphenation (but is more complex, because sometime we realy need writing in toc files...)

@Rmano there is a bug in the nested \ExplSyntaxOn declaration. They don't stack, so after \ExplSyntaxOn\ExplSyntaxOn\ExplSyntaxOff the expl3 syntax will be off.
@Rmano also the param regex is wrong, they use #\d\+, but this should be #[#1-9], imho.

@Skillmon :hi texE3func gui=NONE guifg=red for example... (:h vimtex-syntax has a list of syntax groups)
@Skillmon Lervag will be happy to have issues opened on this --- I have a small series of fires to distinguish in the workplace now... I'll try to report that later if you can't

11:06 AM
@Rmano no, will do :)

11:18 AM
highlight def link texE3Func               texCmd
highlight def link texE3Var                texCmdType
highlight def link texE3Cmd                texCmdType
@Rmano I prefer just doing ^^^

11:37 AM
@Skillmon Probably you can blame me for this, see my answer in the issue...

12:30 PM
@DavidCarlisle, @UlrikeFischer, @PhelypeOleinik Who wants to answer the L3 question?

@yo' I was helping one of my students on Overleaf yesterday, and we had big problems getting syncing between source and PDF to work at all. Are there known issues? Browser problems? I use FF on a Mac; I don't know what they were using other than it was a PC.

@Rmano I saw it. Maybe then it's better to not fix this. My example isn't really sensible TeX-coding after all, whereas yours is.

yo'
12:46 PM
@AlanMunn Hi! We had a major outage on Sunday which crippled some Overleaf browser sessions, so it makes sense to try clearing cookies+cache or go Incognito to see whether that helps. Other then that, there're some known issues with spaces in filenames and with some package such as tikz-fadings, todonotes, ... overleaf.com/learn/how-to/SyncTeX_Errors

@yo' None of those cases apply. I'll try clearing cookies though. Thanks.

@AlanMunn ooh cookies

yo'
@AlanMunn If it doesn't help, feel free to send the project URL to support@overleaf.com and I'll check.

🇬🇧 this website uses biscuits 🇬🇧

@yo' Ok thanks.

1:32 PM
@JosephWright I added something, feel free to edit.

@PauloCereda fun

2:05 PM
@Rmano oh

Meanwhile in Canada: Don't let moose lick your car
2

2:22 PM
@AlanMunn OH MY

@AlanMunn that reminds me of Kona in Hawaii --- they say it's forbidden to swim at less than 3 feet from turtles, but nobody explained that to the turtles...

@Rmano :) Well I guess as with the moose, you can do things to avoid it as much as possible.

2:39 PM
@AlanMunn I hope nobody drives so fast that they only see the right hand side of the message static01.nyt.com/images/2020/11/24/world/24moose04/…

@PauloCereda -- My very most favorite cartoon from the New Yorker (I wish I could find it online) is a robed individual carrying a sign saying "It's just going to continue and continue".

@barbarabeeton ooh :)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas :) Of course the left hand side just tells you not to rent your moose out.

3:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle well I would say the alphabet is quite recognizable too ...

@UlrikeFischer is it?

@AlanMunn ... which a real problem for everybody without their own moose - they need to rent them somewhere :)

yo'
@AlanMunn Does a newspaper really require registration?!?!?!

@yo' noscript fixes this

yo'
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas that's just plain stupid. (But interesting to know, thanks!)

3:17 PM
@yo' Sorry, I have a paid subscription, so I forget that it's paywalled.

@yo' I don't disagree :)

yo'
@AlanMunn no worries. I hate the fact that the page doesn't say it's paywalled, it asks me to register. These two things are utterly different.

@yo' A slow internet connection also works. From home I have time to read most of the article before the subscription page loads :)

@yo' -- If I remember correctly, registration allows you two or three free articles a month.

yo'
@barbarabeeton ah, so generous :-)

3:22 PM
@barbarabeeton Yes (I am subscribed also, but I used the registration before. I think it's five but I am not sure)

@AlanMunn -- Some excitement in your neighborhood over the past few days ... The secretary of state has earned his spurs. Good for him! (I know you're just a bemused onlooker.)

3:58 PM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ugh, why is it always almonds? :p

4:15 PM
@Plergux -- So you don't like marzipan either.

@barbarabeeton I don't like anything with almonds in it :p

oops I misread your comment:-)

@DavidCarlisle -- hiss, boo.

@DavidCarlisle hahahahahaha!

@DavidCarlisle oh no
@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh
ooh look at dem mooses

5:09 PM
@UlrikeFischer quack?

@PauloCereda ?

@UlrikeFischer Could you help me with notoemoji? :)

@PauloCereda sure

@UlrikeFischer Poke in a minute. :)

5:21 PM
@PauloCereda answered

@UlrikeFischer danke :)

@PauloCereda I forgot the rule that the number of ^ must fit the number of digits ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh :)

3 hours later…
8:43 PM
Dammit, I'm so close to figuring out how to define my own sequence of symbols, but now latex is complaining that \cs isn't defined
head desk

9:02 PM
@Canageek the fix is probably to define \cs (I add helpfully)

@DavidCarlisle Right, but that is something that is from latex3e I thought

@Canageek it's like the «any» button on your keyboard

@DavidCarlisle I'm straight up copying the " \int_to_alph" definition from interfaces3.pdf
ANd I thought the expl3 package would provide it, so I'm confused and trying to figure out what I need to load to make it work

@Canageek Jokes aside, normally I see \cs used in documentation as a stand in for an arbitrary control sequence. I don't know of any actual uses of it. It's like foo and bar in a way.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen wut. Why would the manual give this as an example then

9:10 PM
@Canageek I have no idea. I was looking for it there, and did not find it.

@Canageek are you sure that you are using the right catcode setup? \cs_new:Npn only works if \ExplSyntaxOn has been issued.

@UlrikeFischer I have no idea. I'm just trying to make a series of lanthanides.

@Canageek hm, you don't know about catcodes and I have no idea what lanthanides should be.

@UlrikeFischer and the chemnum manual said it used the \into_to_<> commands, so I searched that out and copied the code. I note it says low level, so if I'm going about this entirely the wrong way, let me know
@UlrikeFischer A series of elements on the periodic table. I want to make a sequence of them I can use like \alpha or \arabic
pastebin.com/b5bnHZQj < What I"m trying to do

9:15 PM
@Canageek well as I thought you are missing \ExplSyntaxOn (and \ExplSyntaxOff at the end)..

The end result is I want to do \cmpd{lnwater.la} and get something like 10La. Which means I need each lanthanide to have a number associated with it.
@UlrikeFischer Perfect, I've moved it to a new error message
! Missing $ inserted.
<inserted text>
$
l.36 \cmpd{lnwater.la}
Wut

@Canageek but don't call your function \int, that is reserved as prefix, use e.g. \cs_new:Npn \canageeek_int_to_lanthanide:n #1

@UlrikeFischer OK.
NEW error
! Undefined control sequence.
\__chemnum_lanthanide_label_format:n ...\canageek

@Canageek well you need to change the name in both places.

@UlrikeFischer Thoguht I did that

9:21 PM
\ExplSyntaxOff is in the wrong place. move it after the next command.

(Also dumb question: Am I going about this entirely the wrong way? The manual says "This is the low-level function for conversion of an hinteger expressioni into a symbolic form (often letters)"

The words "low-level" scare me, should I be using a higher level interface?

@Canageek I don't know chemnum, but the code looks quite sensible.

9:37 PM
@UlrikeFischer OK. Glad my copy and pasting code from the manual without understanding it worked >.>

10:08 PM
@Canageek sorry I was away from machine, but seems you sorted it out:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yep, and this time I'm asking for help in a question instead of trying to rewrite how these hyperlinks work myself, since my boss want a draft of this chapter in only two weeks....

@Canageek but you should make a minimal example.

@UlrikeFischer Trying to figure out how to do that. Never sure if I should when I literally can't even START the question
Is there a command to generate a page of text, and then let me put code after it?

@Canageek link targets are hard:-)

10:25 PM
@Canageek \lipsum, but mainly one need a link.

@UlrikeFischer Found it from tex.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/228/… along with other useful resources
I will finish the MWE, but I may have just found a really dumb workaround

\caption[\refcmpd{a}]{\cmpd{a}] but that feels...fragile

10:46 PM
and yeepppp it breaks if I try it outside my MWE, so that isn't a solution

11:06 PM
@Canageek something like this should work. Put the code where you want the link
\section{Title} %Link going here, good
\label{sec:one} %I could manually set a target like this
\ExplSyntaxOn
\chemnum_use_compound:n {a}
\chemnum_hyper_target:nn {a}
\ExplSyntaxOff
\begin{figure}[tbh]

@UlrikeFischer Would putting that inside a command work so I don't have big blocks of code littering my document?

@Canageek sure. but the \ExplSyntax stuff must be outside the command definition.

11:34 PM
@UlrikeFischer Ok, what did I mess up

\ExplSyntaxOn
\newcommand[1]{
\chemnum_use_compound:n {#1}
\chemnum_hyper_target:nn {#1}
}{\cmpdtarget{#1} }
\ExplSyntaxOff
"! Missing \endcsname inserted.
<to be read again>
\@ne
l.213 \newcommand[1]
{"

@Canageek you have no command name after the newcommand.

Oh fiddlesticks, I did write that backwards
