1:13 AM
I've a silly question, the answer to which I haven't been able to fine elsewhere. Is there an "official" name for the naming convention for color that uses exclamation marks (e.g. green!40)?

6 hours later…
6:57 AM
@LaTeXereXeTaL the xcolor documentation calls them "color expression"

yo'
7:16 AM
@barbarabeeton exclusively extrusive?

7:41 AM
@Skillmon So do 'we' in l3color (as I nicked the idea from xcolor)

8:21 AM
quack

@PauloCereda the dinner guests aren't there yet.

@UlrikeFischer ooh

baaa

8:53 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Aaaarrrrr? ;-P

@Rmano Yarrr! :D

@PauloCereda youtube.com/watch?v=xIEWgxuaPyA camera---man---squirrel

@Plergux ooh quack
@Rmano ooh

For those interested (@AlanMunn @UlrikeFischer) I have successfully managed to get my thesis draft to work with a very nice font called Linux Libertine called straight from system by LuaLaTeX :D #veryhappy

@Plergux ooh sheep skills

9:21 AM
@JosephWright I thought it would be a good idea to point out the term used by xcolor, since that's, afaik, the origin of such expressions. Luckily it seems I was right :)

@PauloCereda Tex-Fu :p

@Plergux ooh a ninja sheep

@Plergux ^^ my attempt
Drat, I cannot even draw a proper square

@PauloCereda LOL "Mr. Duck, Will you stand up please?" :p

9:35 AM
@yo' I just reported this to the springer publishing contact form, not sure if overleaf would fix their template anyway? tex.stackexchange.com/a/571496/1090

@Plergux oh no, things will explode :)
I know where this is going

@PauloCereda looks like the front of an oven, the duck is probably inside

@DavidCarlisle OH NO

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas Nice! :D although not quite suited for a thesis. Unless I introduce dropcaps and use that font :p

9:39 AM

@DavidCarlisle ...aaaand I just spat coffee all over myself. :D

@DavidCarlisle ^^ this will be a duck in the oven WAIT A MINUTE WHY DID I DRAW THAT

9:57 AM
@Plergux I have it on good authority that this is a good font for a thesis
MY THESIS WILL USE THIS. — Paulo Cereda Dec 16 '16 at 11:10

@DavidCarlisle Sold! :D

@DavidCarlisle I set my last draft paper with it and sent it to my coauthors... it was fun to observe the reactions
One of them told me he greatly preferred the new version ;-)

10:12 AM
@Rmano he must have had a very low opinion of the old version!

@DavidCarlisle ieeetran class ;-)
Well, not so bad in the end.

@DavidCarlisle oh no

@PauloCereda I have your thesis on my machine, and I can't remember any sheep-letters.
@PauloCereda oh, btw., is your thesis done yet?

@Skillmon ooh
@Skillmon it is, I guess

10:32 AM
@PauloCereda or a duck who can't get out of vim?

@HaraldHanche-Olsen ooh

10:45 AM
@HaraldHanche-Olsen :quack

11:20 AM
@Rmano E492: Not an editor command: quack

@HaraldHanche-Olsen :-) well, with a bit of vimscript maybe... ;-)
:command quack q!
hmmm no. E183: User defined commands must start with an uppercase letter
so Quack it is @PauloCereda :command Quack q! --- ducks live dangerously

12:21 PM
anyone know how to get texstudio to run plain pdftex? or at least add a user command?
Think I found it
hmm, though, I cannot make it use magic comments

@Rmano ooh
@daleif You could make it use arara. :)

@PauloCereda nope, not with this user

12:43 PM
@daleif if pdftex is in the path, you should be able to use % !TeX TS-program = pdftex %
or if you created a user command: % !TeX program = txs:///<name of the user command>
* missing % at the end of the previous line

@DavidCarlisle hello, I do an example about tcolorbox and it gives me an error please help me if you have an idea : tex.stackexchange.com/questions/571535/…

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ahh, thanks, I usually don't use texstudio, but have a user who have been forced from Mac to windows (long story)

@PolineSandra try with
\newtcbtheorem
  []% init options
  {definition}% name
  {تعريف}
  % title
  {%
    colback=green!5,
    colframe=green!35!black,
    fonttitle=\bfseries,
  }% options
 {}% prefix
(this gives some output, no idea if the output makes sense)

@daleif Inside my head, I read from Mac to Whooper (sorry, I am an idiot).

1:00 PM
@daleif That's like choosing between the plague and cholera :)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas Well Windows is not a bad as it used to be.
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas name of the user command is that including the prefix as in say user0:pdftex?

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ooh middle ages

@daleif I think only the last part (I don't use user0 and define them as e.g. arara:arara and then use % !TeX program = txs:///arara)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas <3

@daleif The last one I used was win7 - so a bit of water might have gone down since then :)
@PauloCereda :D that's the most important command missing in texstudio
^^^ even made a button for it

1:10 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas <3

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas hmm, I cannot get that to work on my linux. I'll try with the latest from texstudio
hmm, that helped a little. I'd better check on a windows laptop

@daleif (no guarantees for latest version, I'm using texstudio 2.12)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas That is what I was using, I couldn't get your lines to work. Is working now it seems, but I couldn't get it to work an hour ago on the users Windows.

1:28 PM
@daleif as said above, I'm not a windows user, but maybe check if the texstudio path finds pdftex?

1:48 PM
why is a basic texlive still installing ae?
(my testlaptop does not have any texlive on it)

2:16 PM
@PolineSandra It helps to add the error when asking about an error, I added it this time. I don't think I have ever uses tcolorbox but there are lots of people on site who can answer

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Ah thanks for checking. We in general don't actively care about 3rd party templates. However, this one seems to be uploaded by us, so we might update the template if a bugfix is released. (We're definitely not touching the class file ourselves.)

@Plergux Once and a while we manage to give out good advice. :)
2

@yo' according to the history.txt change log distributed with the class, I have been there before.
 30.5.96  llncs.cls               incompatibility with new article.cls of
                                  1995/12/20 v1.3q Standard LaTeX document class,
                                  \if@openbib is no longer defined,
                                  reported by Ralf Heckmann and Graham Gough
                                  solution by David Carlisle

@DavidCarlisle @PolineSandra you commented the last argument of the definition:
% {def}% prefix

yo'
@DavidCarlisle :-D

2:22 PM
@PolineSandra just deleting things clearly unrelated you can vastly simplify your example
\documentclass[12pt,a4paper,openany]{book}

\usepackage{tcolorbox}

\tcbuselibrary{theorems}
\newtcbtheorem
  []% init options
  {definition}% name
  {abc}
  % title
  {%
    colback=green!5,
    colframe=green!35!black,
    fonttitle=\bfseries,
  }% options
% {def}% prefix

{}

\begin{document}
\begin{definition}{}{}
zzz
\end{definition}

\end{document}

@AlanMunn ooh

2:36 PM
@AlanMunn :D

2:50 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ahh, learned something. the name used in txs:///name is the part before the " in the name of the user command, that seems to work

@daleif oh, good to know!

" should have been a :
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ^^^

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas did you see the latest arara awesomeness? I had no idea we could provide a simple answer! :) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/571531/…

@PauloCereda already voted for the code style emoji :)

@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas ooh :)

3:10 PM
@Plergux -- Wonderful news! (applause and cheering!)

@barbarabeeton ooh we need a sheep choir

@barbarabeeton Now that's taken care of it's back to drawing the a cross section of the retina in tikz. :p

user image
3
ooh
@barbarabeeton ^^

1 hour later…
4:22 PM
@DavidCarlisle please do you know how I can do the numeration of definition with respect to the section ?

@PolineSandra use the option number within=section.

4:38 PM
Am I correct in thinking that LaTeX should hyphenate words, and if it doesn't (even in the case of underfull boxes) then something is wrong with my document?

@PolineSandra why do you keep pinging me? A I said I have never used the package.
@Szabolcs er well no, it depends.

@DavidCarlisle If I use the article class, then it hyphenates. If I use iopart, it does not. So it seems iopart disables it (or doesn't enable it)? I'm just really bothered by that one "underfull" line. The spaces are noticeably too large.

@Szabolcs I don't have iopart but google suggest this sas.upenn.edu/~durduran/topost/iopart.cls but there I only see hyphenpenalty=10000 localy in titles and headings?

@Skillmon in any place please ?

Between classes.

4:50 PM
where classes?

today's treasure find:
\DeclareMathOperator{\m3/s}{...
\DeclareMathOperator{\m3/kg}{...
\DeclareMathOperator{\m/omm2}{...
@egreg @daleif ^^^

@PolineSandra The classes that I teach.

@UlrikeFischer Wonderful!

@egreg isn't it? There is also \kJ/kgK and \kJ/kg in that order, which basically works only that the output of the first is naturally wrong and they claimed to use this in hundreds of documents without problems. They must have a very good guardian angel.

@UlrikeFischer Om my
@UlrikeFischer They've never heard of siunitx???

4:59 PM
> Good news: receive your Flying Blue e-mails in Portuguese from now on!
^^ Awesome, localized spam!
3

@PauloCereda Spam localizado incrível!, surely

@JosephWright OMG

@LaTeXereXeTaL scrbook or memoir? :)

@AlanMunn Ahh I see what you did there.

@JosephWright obviously not. There are tons of such declarations. And if they used that everywhere they obviously will not like the idea to adapt all their document to siunitx.

5:03 PM
Upgrading my old Macbook to Fedora 33.

@UlrikeFischer :)
@PauloCereda Cool

@JosephWright It already runs F30. :)

@UlrikeFischer kinda wanna keep a record of strange findings

@egreg almost as wonderful as using a U+001B escape character to separate words:-)
\usepackage{siunitx}
\DeclareMathOperator{\m3/s}{...
\DeclareMathOperator{\m3/kg}{...
\DeclareMathOperator{\m/omm2}{...
@JosephWright better? ^^

@DavidCarlisle :)

2 hours later…
7:39 PM
@PauloCereda Still using versioned Linux distro?

@AlexG Someday I will use Rawhide. :)

8:09 PM
@PauloCereda LFS :p

8:39 PM
I know it's bad form to read documentation, but where is the new hook management stuff of the kernel documented?

@AlanMunn texdoc lthooks

@PhelypeOleinik Thanks!

9:16 PM
As this is more of a matter-of-taste type question I'm not sure it belongs on tex.se proper, but if you think it does I'll ask it there.

Are there any fans of SourceSerifPro here? I'm using it, and am thinking it needs a little linespread, but I don't have an eye for such things. Any advice? What seemed to look good to me was an awful lot (10%).

9:27 PM
@dedded I've never even heard of the font so no help. But I agree it's off topic for the site here. It actually might be on-topic for Graphic Design: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com . They hate font ID questions, but seem to have other question asking about leading for particular fonts.

9:39 PM
@samcarter_preparing_for_xmas and @UlrikeFischer -- My husband has just come up with this thought: There should be a German word for "Something there should be a German word for." Any suggestions?

The new syntax highlighting is on! (and it's very blue :)

@PhelypeOleinik it is blue, but not very blue for me. But it has a sort of time lag, at first everything is black and then it colors, I never saw this before.
@PhelypeOleinik but you are right, looks like picasso blue period ;-)

@UlrikeFischer It takes a while for the parser to assign colour to everything (there's a comparison here), and since the parser is now much more complex than it was, it makes sense to take a little longer (though it shouldn't be more than a couple of seconds)
@UlrikeFischer :-)

10:10 PM
@barbarabeeton you mean Es sollte ein deutsches Wort dafür geben, dass es ein deutsches Wort für etwas geben sollte?

@dedded The maximum depth plus maximum height with SourceSerifPro (at 10pt) is 9.96997pt, against 8.88889pt with Computer Modern. This leaves about 2pt between lines with a descender and an ascender. Possibly something like \linespread{1.04} would be good; 1.1 seems too much.

"I've never even heard of the font"
It's relatively new, from Adobe. Google adopted it for the serif version of Noto.

I've asked my question on graphicdesign.se.
@egreg Yeah, I tried 5% first, but it still looked tight to me when I printed a full page.

@dedded I think your question there would be aided a lot by a couple of sample images with different leading (as in @egreg's sample).

10:25 PM
@AlanMunn That's a good idea. I'll try to generate a couple.

10:39 PM
@UlrikeFischer -- That's certainly a translation of what I asked, but Gordon was hoping for a single word for the concept. Even a multi-multi-syllable one.

10:56 PM
@barbarabeeton There is no single word für „Das Fehlen eines deutschen Begriffes für etwas“. One might invent „Begriffsmangel“. The wish/necessity to get rid of the problem that there is a „Begriffsmangel“ might be creatively named „Begriffsdesiderat“. 

@UlrikeFischer -- Well, that's promising, and Gordon likes it. Danke!

@barbarabeeton Thank my husband ;-)

@UlrikeFischer -- Vielen dank, Gerd!

11:15 PM
@barbarabeeton Gert <-- with t!

11:26 PM
@UlrikeFischer -- Oops! Schade! I will do my best to remember. (I think I am confusing him with someone else; inexcusable.)

11:43 PM
@barbarabeeton the name with t is unusual and lots of people get it wrong, even after many years.

@UlrikeFischer -- Then I shall have to remember that it's spelled the same as Gert Fröbe. Having see some movies with him as a younger man, and not a James Bond villain, I should be able to do that.
