If in doubt, tell OP to update in user and admin mode: tex.stackexchange.com/q/519284/134574 :-)
00:45
@CarLaTeX -- I also get a (different) corrupted view on an old Mac with Chrome. Didn't happen earlier today. Something fishy is going on.

@PhelypeOleinik Hi, you have an email :)
@PabloGonzálezL Hello :-) Not yet, apparently...
@PabloGonzálezL Give it a couple minutes
@PhelypeOleinik Your mail and mine don't seem to get along :(
@PabloGonzálezL My mail is proving itself more picky than I'd like.
@PabloGonzálezL You sent to the new address? If so, try the old one. That seemed to work
@PhelypeOleinik I've forwarded it to your old address.
@PabloGonzálezL Meh, now I got both (in spam). Go figure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
02:57
@PhelypeOleinik Sometimes happens :(..snif
Aps... I have noticed a particular notation in this chat... Here I leave my greeting
( ՞ ਊ ՞ )
@PabloGonzálezL Replied ;-)
03:29
@PhelypeOleinik I have replied, I hope it arrives :( ... good night...time to sleep ...zzz
@PabloGonzálezL It did now. Good night!

@PhelypeOleinik Yes, it is fixed now, thanks! (@barbarabeeton)

Wow this looks amazing: github.com/SwiftLaTeX/SwiftLaTeX
6
Basically it's LaTeX running locally in the browser, plus BakomaTeX/TeXPad-like WYSIWYG (which is obviously not perfect), and SyncTeX-like inverse search
It's not perfect and seems to have some bugs, but I was able to paste xii.tex into it (without the final "jbye") and it handled that too
@ShreevatsaR a very important use case:-)
definitely :)
@JosephWright ^^ For the learn-latex thingy, perhaps...
Well, looks like there are some limitations on the specials/drivers side (so no TikZ or tcolorbox for example) currently, but most of the standard LaTeX features and packages seem to work (labels and cross-references, etc).
08:05
@ShreevatsaR I assume this is using the same kind of compilation to Javascript as texlive.js? Do you know which source they are using mostly the versions of that I have seen are quite old
@DavidCarlisle Yes something like that, but they seem to have built on top of it (to hook into TeX and be notified when things change etc). I was looking at their FAQ (swiftlatex.readthedocs.io/en/latest), it mentions a paper from 2018 (DOI: 10.1145/3209280.3209522)
08:18
@PhelypeOleinik About to have a look
@DavidCarlisle Looking inside the wasm binary files shows something like “This is xmlTeX, Version 3.14159265^@-2.6^@-1.40.20”, and “This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159265^@-2.6^@-1.40.20”, so it seems to be based on TL '19... but the actual source that led to that binary doesn't seem to be included.
@HenriMenke oopsie
08:46
I just wrote an answer using tabbing.
0
A: How to use tabs in Latex?

Henri MenkeYou can use the standard tabbing environment for this. \documentclass{article} \begin{document} \begin{tabbing} Set of equations: \= $x = y + 5$ \\ \> $y = 3$ \\ \end{tabbing} \end{document}

Probably a very underappreciated feature of LaTeX.
@HenriMenke I've just learned of it :-)
09:01
ooh another Bond movie
TERRIBLE FONT CHOICES
@PauloCereda Are only the font choices terrible?
@wilx good point :)

Hey, does he make something like that normally?

`\pgfplotstablevertcat[col sep=comma]{\main}{row1.txt}`

`\main` is "row0". The problem is: I have several rows and do not know how to name them with numbers, like
`\pgfplotstableread[col sep=comma]{row1.txt}\row1` <--- I think this is not accepted.
@cis who is he? Some context would be helpful here.
cis
cis
@Skillmon He is the LaTeX. This is 'computer scientist'-jargon.
12:25
@ShreevatsaR I'd love to know how they achieve the high compilation speeds (I know they pre-render during input, but still the compilation thereafter seems to be pretty fast)
12:36
@Skillmon fast bunnies
@PauloCereda BUNNY ENSLAVEMENT
@Skillmon oh no
cis
cis
13:04
@DavidCarlisle This code helps me a lot.
But how can I put in a pgfplotstablecommand, say

`\ifnum\the\filecount=1 \pgfplotstableread[]{data1.txt}{\main} \else\fi`
\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
\usepackage{pgfplotstable}

\newcount\filecount
\newwrite\cisout
\begin{document}

{
\endlinechar=\newlinechar%
\filecount=1 %
\def\aaa{file number \the\filecount}%
\loop%
\immediate\openout\cisout=data\the\filecount.txt %
\immediate\write\cisout{%
1, 2,   \aaa
}%
\immediate\closeout\cisout %
\advance\filecount by 1 %
\ifnum\filecount<5 %
\ifnum\the\filecount=1 \pgfplotstableread[]{data1.txt}{\main} \else\fi
\repeat %
}%

\pgfplotstabletypeset[col sep=comma]{\main}
----> error
@Skillmon the paper explains this: they queue up user edits and apply them directly to the PDF; meanwhile they also send them to the latex compiler and when it is ready they merge the remaining edits.
@ShreevatsaR Yeah, I read this, but still they advocate "Fast compilation thanks to LaTeX checkpointing"
@ShreevatsaR is that what they mean with that term?
13:24
@Skillmon yes the checkpoint will be the data structure that lets them know which edits have been done since they last did a full latex run.
@DavidCarlisle but the compilation will still be the complete document, not just some parts of it, I thought this was what they meant with "checkpointing"

Die Kartoffel
German is so easy
cis
cis
Very good, Mr. Cereda. So let's test your expertise! ;)

· Example:
der Herr
die Ente

· Task: Set der/die/das into xxx

xxx Deutschtum
xxx Ehre
xxx Mut
xxx Honorigkeit
@cis oh no
/quacks in despair
Hold on, I can do this
Die Deutschtum
Das Ehre
Die Mut
Der Honorigkeit
@cis ^^
How did I do?
cis
cis
...tum ---> everytime 'das'

...keit ---> everytime 'die'

Else: die Ehre, der Mut
cis
cis
15:53
But it is hard in some special cases:

'das Verständ-nis' vs. 'die Verständ-nis'
So my tip: Have a look into the work of the Brothers Grimm. :()
yo'
yo'
Please, what page do you see on texdoc.net ?
@yo' tex.tips
yo'
yo'
@TeXnician ok, so it's not only me. @PauloCereda ? ^^
@cis ooh

someone ate your beautiful and utterly useful webpage :)

@yo' ooh

16:29
@PauloCereda Are you learning the -honorable- German language?
@cis I tried in the past, but had to stop in the early lessons. But I am eager to return to this beautiful language. :)
cis
cis
So use the *Duolingo-App* (you can learn 'klingon' there as well).
(And maybe 'memorion' or 'quizlet' for cramming vocabulary.)

(I have that app installed, but the english-lessons -there- are very boring.)
@cis I prefer the old methods. :)
cis
cis
Yes, at the duolingo-app a have had to translate
"The girl eats an apple!"
about 400-times, or something like that... XD
ooh apfel
I don't remember girl
Frau?
yo'
yo'
16:44
@PauloCereda that's a generic opening greeting for females, IIRC
@yo' oh
ah mädchen
@PauloCereda Frau means woman, but also is used like "Frau Schäfer" (so a generic opening greeting for females)
@PauloCereda Mädchen (uppercasing is important!)
@Skillmon oh sorry
All nouns are written with uppercase, right?
@PauloCereda Benötigen Sie Hilfe?, ich kann gut Deutsch
@PauloCereda but not only for greetings, but also to formally address a female in a conversation (in the "Frau <surname>" form).
@DavidCarlisle why the comma behind the question mark?
16:48
@DavidCarlisle ooh Deutsch
@PauloCereda correct.
off for dinner!
@Skillmon don't question an infallible source
unfortunately bread, no duck :(
@Skillmon have a great time, mr. rabbit! <3
@Skillmon ooh bread
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda yeah, because in German, most nouns are full self-contained sentences.
16:49
We ducks like bread!
@yo' aha!
cis
cis
@PauloCereda I only know 'girlies' ('girlys' written here)...
@Skillmon Mr. Skillmon, do you learn "Klingon" with the duolingo-app?
"We ducks like bread!"

My good bread has been eaten by my cat! :(
@cis oh no
That's a round cat. :)
cis
cis
@PauloCereda Yes, of course. :()
16:58
@PauloCereda that's what happens if you take a normal shape cat and whack it with a big stick.
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@DavidCarlisle cartoonish approach :)
@cis no, and I don't intend to.
17:56
@PauloCereda -- I keep telling you, bread is not good for ducks! (Grain, on the other hand, ...)
@barbarabeeton oh
cis
cis
@barbarabeeton No, bread is better for my very cuddly cat... :()
@yo' It's fixed (but no need to use the www. prefix)
yo'
yo'
18:15
@StefanKottwitz thanks!
@CarLaTeX YES
NUTELLA IS GOOD
@PauloCereda especially on pizzas?
@DavidCarlisle YES
Nutella pizza is good!
cis

@PauloCereda Mr. Cereda just make a Bolognese!
18:44
ooh
@cis OMG
18:59
welcome to tex.sx, I've got to ask, are you the same Don Hosek that used to run ymir.claremont.edu ? — David Carlisle 4 mins ago
@CarLaTeX is this a "OMG, what did this German guy do to our cuisine, that's an affront to all Italians." or is this a "OMG, this looks so good I want to taste it, you're a genius, I never would have thought a non-Italian good do this"?
@DavidCarlisle what is ymir.claremont.edu?
@Skillmon one of the premier pre-ctan archives and one of the few that could be reliably reached from the UK before the UK was on the internet. It's maintainer Don Hosek answered a fair proportion of questions on comp.text.tex and probably taught me most of the tex I know, certainly taught me how to answer queries on public forums. How many Don Hoseks can there be I wonder....
@DavidCarlisle you didn't know everything from the start?
@Skillmon nope:-)
@Skillmon ooh
19:28
@DavidCarlisle -- I've met Don Hosek. I think there's a really good chance it's the same.
@DavidCarlisle -- Have investigated further. On LinkedIn, I've found a 2nd-level connection to Hosek, and it's someone I know from the earlier TeX world. So this reinforces my earlier conclusion that it's the same person.
@barbarabeeton good to see some old names still interested in TeX:-)
2
@Skillmon More the first one :P
@cis Is there Nutella in it?
cis
cis
19:53
@CarLaTeX Oh no, Mr. CarLaTeX - I do not eat sweet things! Only sour and salty food!
@Skillmon Mr. Skillmon, I do not know to understand your phrases. But, I make all the meals in the American way! Best example: Pizza! That has to be triple-cheese!
@cis it's probably a bad habit to put Mr. in front of user names, stick to just using @ More often than not, Mr is the wrong title.
cis
cis
@DavidCarlisle Mr. Carlisle, you know I am a very polite man. ;)
@cis yes but using Mr when addressing a lady isn't polite, nor is using Mr when people have other formal titles such as Dr
cis
cis
@DavidCarlisle Ouh, is @CarLaTeX a Lady?
20:20
@HenriMenke @JosephWright @UlrikeFischer today's instalment: accsupp atbegshi atenddvi atveryend hologo pdflscape pmboxdraw rerunfilecheck oberdiek

@cis :) Yours might, but the first name of that particular user isn't.

@Skillmon Ok, so who is the bad girl here?!
@cis Yes, Carla - tex

@CarLaTeX Ouhhhh.... Carla!!!
@cis So we are almost namesakes :)

@CarLaTeX but both missing isle to give your names some stature and importance
@DavidCarlisle Oooh Carla - isle
21:49
@DavidCarlisle Getting told off about TDS zips :)

Does anyone know anything about the status of filehook -- bitbucket.org/martin_scharrer/filehook/issues/1
@StrongBad imho it works now. Do you have a problem?
@UlrikeFischer I get! Package filehook Error: Detected 'scrlfile' package with unknown definition o
f \InputIfFileExists.
Use the 'force' option of 'filehook' to overwrite it..
`
With force it works, but I figured it should work without that.
@StrongBad show an example.
@UlrikeFischer yeah, I know. I got to go track down an MWE. I figured if the bug was still known I would just wait it out.
@JosephWright I blame you for making them

@UlrikeFischer @JosephWright we need to ping Martin again?
22:20
@DavidCarlisle :)
@DavidCarlisle You have to opt in
@JosephWright I know:-) but actually as I mentioned to Ina it's useful check that the same list as the original oberdiek manifest are actually bundled. It's quite easy to miss some of the non standard files.
@DavidCarlisle Sure
@DavidCarlisle You missed an interesting meeting :)
@JosephWright just seen you sent minutes, let me look...
:)
@DavidCarlisle I could understand Chris ...
@DavidCarlisle I think we need to check KOMA first.
22:28
@UlrikeFischer too scared to raise an issue there
@DavidCarlisle I meant we should check the koma development version. There is a tds, I will look.
@UlrikeFischer First thing to add to contrib tests I suspect
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright it errors with the newest tds-version too and I don't see anything obvious in the commits. I'm not sure who should adapt its code, but probably filehook.
22:50
@JosephWright that testing config I should probably finish off my branch that uses a normal tu format in base.
@DavidCarlisle Sounds good
@JosephWright I didn't push it to gh as there were a couple of issues, all resolvable I think but I ran out of time. should be able to look at that in next few days
@DavidCarlisle Great :)
@DavidCarlisle thanks for making the mwe
