Basically it's LaTeX running locally in the browser, plus BakomaTeX/TeXPad-like WYSIWYG (which is obviously not perfect), and SyncTeX-like inverse search

It's not perfect and seems to have some bugs, but I was able to paste xii.tex into it (without the final "jbye") and it handled that too

Well, looks like there are some limitations on the specials/drivers side (so no TikZ or tcolorbox for example) currently, but most of the standard LaTeX features and packages seem to work (labels and cross-references, etc).

@ShreevatsaR I assume this is using the same kind of compilation to Javascript as texlive.js? Do you know which source they are using mostly the versions of that I have seen are quite old

@DavidCarlisle Yes something like that, but they seem to have built on top of it (to hook into TeX and be notified when things change etc). I was looking at their FAQ (swiftlatex.readthedocs.io/en/latest), it mentions a paper from 2018 (DOI: 10.1145/3209280.3209522)

@Skillmon the paper explains this: they queue up user edits and apply them directly to the PDF; meanwhile they also send them to the latex compiler and when it is ready they merge the remaining edits.

It's maintainer Don Hosek answered a fair proportion of questions on comp.text.tex and probably taught me most of the tex I know, certainly taught me how to answer queries on public forums.
