I'm using TeXStudio 2.2 (A fork of TeXMaker, formerly known as TeXMakerX) and I'm trying to make a Quickbuild option that adds in Bibtex. I've written the command line as

Is there a plug-in for a PDF reader (or stand-alone GUI) that would allow me to add LaTeX annotations to an existing PDF?
I would like to annotate PDFs of scientific papers written by other authors. Often, the notes that I would like to make include maths, so being able to include LaTeX snippet...
I am not sure what they are called, but there is a bar of buttons in the Madrid theme, just above the page numbering, that looks like this:
I would really like to not have the white buttons appear (but leave the page numbering intact).
Does anyone know how I can do this? Thanks!

I've been using Movie 15 to create narrated PDF files. Works well in Adobe Acrobat and may soon work on the iPad, too (pdf readers there are promising to handle embedded sound). But Movie 15 is now "deprecated".

I'm interested in saving space by scaling all characters in a passage of text to, say 95% of their normal horizontal character widths. In Microsoft Word this is done with the Scale field under the Character Spacing tab in the Font formatting dialogue (see the figure).

I'm trying to build a tex file with TeXstudio 2.3 (and MikTeX 2.9 installed separately), which builds with no problem using LEd. When I run pdflatex with TeXstudio, I get the error message (and thus the .pdf is not generated):

I am struggling setting up AUCTeX preview in a way that I can use it with XeLaTeX documents. When I try to generate the previews I get the following error

I used tikz externalize successfully for a time now. But since my pc crashed once the externalized pictures are instantly deleted. I can't find much information about creating tikz fill patterns or even using the custom built in patterns. Look to do all the common fills like lines, hatches, dots, stars, etc... I need to be able to control the scale too. (the patterns I did end up finding were way to large)

@lockstep We've been asked a few times to let 'newer' users answer first before going for low-hanging fruit. So I don't tend to get a lot of votes on any particular day.
I had the idea of creating a flowchart of the TeX internals with TikZ. I imagine it as a piece of text which is shown in different states of the TeX internals: some is still unread in the opened file, some is in the input buffer, some is just tokenized, ..., typesetting, output routine and finally the output file. I would have to study The TeXBook again first.
I need to define distinct aliases in textual and parenthetical citations for the same reference. For example, I would like \citetalias{Miller2012} to result in "Miller et al. [2012, Paper 1]", while \citepalias{Miller2012} should give "[Miller et al., 2012, Paper 1]".

Regarding your original suggestion: it's a good idea and I was inclined to implement it (I think we've thought of this before, but I can't remember when), but there is one major downside:
It would prevent new users from posting legitimate self-answers when they solve their own problems.

@MartinScharrer If there was a MWE (without the need for additional information), I'd not suggest to close it. But if you think you can salvage the question by editing it, go ahead!
@JosephWright Thanks, I also found it under tug.org/texlive. Should have looked first ;-)
10may: tlnet (and TL'11) frozen, tlpretest starts, CTAN updates continue there.
24may: CTAN updates only on request.
31may: complete freeze for final build, no more updates, final doc tweaks, always more testing.
Ok, this gives me enough time to release my planned updates.
@JosephWright Why actually do they freeze the packages or the support of them? The CTAN packages should be independent from the TeX Live binaries and the installer.
@egreg Out of curiosity, is there any plan to include an option in imakeidx to use an arbitrary counter instead of the current page? :) I'm using a patch you suggested: \patchcmd{\@wrindex}{\thepage}{\thecounter}{}{} :)
@JosephWright: You should also power-flag it as Spam, not delete it manually. By flagging it as spam as a moderator it is automatically deleted, locked and down-voted by Community.
What are the various indexing packages and what are their pros and cons? When should one choose one over the other.
There is some discussion of this in What are the latest/best practices for index generation?, but would prefer to have more details about each package.
@egreg You mean, it is likely to be lifted in the future? The current version of the imakeidx manual is abundantly clear about memoir being incompatible.
moderators what are you supposed to do if you have an answer flagged, just wait to see what the moderators do, or am I supposed to do something? tex.stackexchange.com/questions/54340/…
By using the class achemso Supporting information to prepare the there to carry out a cross-reference (\ref{table:S1}} for this aquivo external "supporting.tex", example: Text ... see (Fig. S2) or (Table: 2), this is Suporting in a separate file.
@MartinScharrer The tight bounding box is by default, at least when I tried it. So I'm unclear how the crop and preview option fit into this. What are these set to by default?
I see, both crop and preview cannot be specified at the same time. Not clear which one is disabled if both are specified, though. And I assume that they both do the same thing different ways.
Also, crop default not mentioned in crop option section.
If enabled this option crops the content to its natural size plus a specified border. This is done by saving the content in a box register and resizing the page size relative to the box dimensions. This option is mutual exclusive with the similar preview option and will therefore disable it. Also float=false will be set by crop=true in order to avoid issues with floating environments.
@FaheemMitha It's mentioned in the section 1.4 Version update and backwards compatibility, but you are right I should mention it again in the options subsection.
You might also want to mention the processing from left to right and that the rightmost one wins, though it is not that important, since usually people will only specify one, I guess.
I've bought a Logitech wireless keyboard. It came with batteries but also with the on/off switch turned on. So practically no batteries. What kind evil plot is this?
@FaheemMitha Yes. Mercurial for my own code, Git for beamer, biblatex, some stuff for UK-TUG and the LaTeX3 SVN mirror (the last one is a bit odd, of course)
@MarcoDaniel no, I think that's just a bug so I plan to fix it in the main package (perhaps with a compatibility option to re-instate the old version) but I'm not sure if that is quite the right fix at present. So lookout for a longtable update, sometime in the next 20 years at current rate of progress on my package updates.
@PauloCereda I'm not sure: it uses TeX for writing the index files for MakeIndex from the .aux file, so the limit of 16 should be there. With imakeidx (not still with memoir) one can use the splitindex option which relies on an external program (by Markus Kohm), which doesn't suffer from this limitation.
