I had the idea of creating a flowchart of the TeX internals with TikZ. I imagine it as a piece of text which is shown in different states of the TeX internals: some is still unread in the opened file, some is in the input buffer, some is just tokenized, ..., typesetting, output routine and finally the output file. I would have to study The TeXBook again first.

@JosephWright: Do you have a committing challenge ;-) -- I think I will test the new fp in the next weeks.

@MarcoDaniel I'm hoping to do the swap to the new code either later today or tomorrow. This won't go to CTAN until after the TL freeze

@JosephWright I am using the svn-files ;-)

@MarcoDaniel I guessed that :-)

@JosephWright When is the TL freeze?

11:38 AM
@JosephWright Thanks, I also found it under tug.org/texlive. Should have looked first ;-)
10may: tlnet (and TL'11) frozen, tlpretest starts, CTAN updates continue there.
24may: CTAN updates only on request.
31may: complete freeze for final build, no more updates, final doc tweaks, always more testing.
Ok, this gives me enough time to release my planned updates.
@JosephWright Why actually do they freeze the packages or the support of them? The CTAN packages should be independent from the TeX Live binaries and the installer.

@MartinScharrer Binaries first, then updates are frozen
This is a continuing source of confusion, as MiKTeX works very differently

@JosephWright Yes, but why are they not allowing an old TL installation to use the new CTAN packages?

@MartinScharrer No, that's what I mean about confusion. With MiKTeX, there is overlap, but with TL once it's frozen (June) that's it for ever

@JosephWright Yes, but why are they doing it like this?
Any idea?

@MartinScharrer Partly because the archives have changed in format over the years, but I think partly it's deliberate: they want a complete freeze

11:47 AM
@JosephWright Ok, sounds right. I also was thinking about these both.

@egreg Out of curiosity, is there any plan to include an option in imakeidx to use an arbitrary counter instead of the current page? :) I'm using a patch you suggested: \patchcmd{\@wrindex}{\thepage}{\thecounter}{}{} :)

2:58 PM
@PauloCereda Actually there's some problem in this approach, as it's not guaranteed that the correct page number is written. It can be off by one.

@egreg Oh I had no idea of that. :(

@PauloCereda In your case it probably works well because songs aren't broken across pages.

@egreg Ah I see. :)

@MartinScharrer Power-flag? Wow! :D

@MartinScharrer Is that so? I'd assumed that flags always work the same way

@JosephWright It's the same with close flags: It takes several user votes to trigger an action, but only one moderator vote.

@MartinScharrer I see: I'd imagined flags worked differently from votes

@JosephWright Flagging it a spam might be seen as a form of voting

Peter GrillWhat are the various indexing packages and what are their pros and cons? When should one choose one over the other. There is some discussion of this in What are the latest/best practices for index generation?, but would prefer to have more details about each package.

@lockstep It's possible that the incompatibility with memoir is lifted. But it seems to me a great answer.

@egreg You mean, it is likely to be lifted in the future? The current version of the imakeidx manual is abundantly clear about memoir being incompatible.

@lockstep Yes, the update seems to be ready. :)

@egreg I can always edit my answer. :-)

There's even an entry in the control panel, if I'm not mistaken. :)

@egreg Well, by default it does, but that's not certain :-)

@PauloCereda No. There's only a spurious message by ImageMagick about "delegates", but it's harmless.

3:32 PM
@egreg Oops. :)

@MartinScharrer something odd, with the styling I looked and the flag bit was highlighted then I came back and it was gone:-)

@JosephWright Users that choose not to install ImageMagick do it at their own risk.

@egreg Well, I guess I'd prefer to see the same set up on Linux, Mac and Windows from TL

@JosephWright ImageMagick is not part of TL, of course.

@egreg Could you tell me what \pdftexbanner expands to with TL under Mac?

@MartinScharrer Indeed! :)
Is that a program?

@PauloCereda Website

5:58 PM
@MartinScharrer There's not "egreg", but "KANT" is quite prominent. :)

The standalone class has a tight bounding box. Anyone knows how that is done?

@FaheemMitha Well, yes I do. I programmed it ;-)

@MartinScharrer :-)

It's either done using the preview package, which does it's own output routine magic.
Or, by default since v1.0, with the crop option. It measures the size by boxing the content and then sets the page dimension to this.
All page margins are disabled.

@MartinScharrer Cool. :-)
@MartinScharrer So, it used to be done with preview, but now no longer?

6:07 PM
@FaheemMitha You can still enable it using the preview option, which used to be the default before v1.0.
@FaheemMitha You can see the related source code here:

@MartinScharrer The last time I used the standalone class I did not find an option for some border white space

@StefanKottwitz It's border
an now as alias, as requested, also margin.

Ok, I guess I just did not found it. I frequently use preview or standalone for examples on texample.net

It's explained on page 6 of the manual (v1.0b)

@MartinScharrer The tight bounding box is by default, at least when I tried it. So I'm unclear how the crop and preview option fit into this. What are these set to by default?

6:11 PM
@MartinScharrer very good

@FaheemMitha Ok, you only mean to add some margin then?
Just add border=1pt as class option etc.
See the manual page 6 bottom.
I thought you like to know how this is implemented.

Ok, looking at the manual now. texdoc standalone, unless there is some other manual.
@MartinScharrer I did.

@FaheemMitha Ok, by default crop is set since v1.0, before the default was preview. If you don't want it tight, then use crop=false.

I see, both crop and preview cannot be specified at the same time. Not clear which one is disabled if both are specified, though. And I assume that they both do the same thing different ways.

Then you get a full normal page.

6:15 PM
@MartinScharrer Ok, so crop=true, and preview=false by default.

@FaheemMitha The last one will disable the other one.

@MartinScharrer Ok, not clear from the manual.

@FaheemMitha Yes, crop=true or crop for short, will set preview=false.

Also, crop default not mentioned in crop option section.
If enabled this option crops the content to its natural size plus a specified border.
This is done by saving the content in a box register and resizing the page size
relative to the box dimensions. This option is mutual exclusive with the similar
preview option and will therefore disable it. Also float=false will be set by
crop=true in order to avoid issues with floating environments.

"This option is mutual exclusive with the similar
preview option and will therefore disable it."

6:16 PM
@MartinScharrer Right, but doesn't state the order. BTW, I think "mutually exclusive" is more standard.
You're saying the last one given will disable the other? Not important, just curious.
so crop=true, preview=true => preview=true?

@FaheemMitha Yes, they are processed from left to right and the last one wins.
crop=true, preview=true => preview=true, crop=false

@MartinScharrer Ok. I'd definitely mention the crop default
in that crop option para, that is. maybe it is there somewhere else.

@FaheemMitha It's mentioned in the section 1.4 Version update and backwards compatibility, but you are right I should mention it again in the options subsection.

@MartinScharrer Ok.
You might also want to mention the processing from left to right and that the rightmost one wins, though it is not that important, since usually people will only specify one, I guess.

6:28 PM
@MartinScharrer Wow, that was fast. No wonder you get so much done.

6:39 PM
Nice to see someone else using hg. These days it is git uber alles.

I've bought a Logitech wireless keyboard. It came with batteries but also with the on/off switch turned on. So practically no batteries. What kind evil plot is this?

So crop is defaulted instead of preview because it is more robust?

@FaheemMitha I prefer Mercurial 'in use', although I prefer the Markdown on GitHub to the way you have to do mark up on BitBucket

@JosephWright So you use both hg and git?

@FaheemMitha Yes. Mercurial for my own code, Git for beamer, biblatex, some stuff for UK-TUG and the LaTeX3 SVN mirror (the last one is a bit odd, of course)

6:43 PM
@JosephWright I see. So latex 3 are still using svn? :-(

@FaheemMitha Yes. I've not pursued trying to move the master repo, as I suspect some of the team would not like it.

@JosephWright Ok, I see.
@percusse Could be an accident. Usually (often?) they have a bit of plastic inserted so the battery can't make a connection.

@JosephWright BibBucket mark up is really stupid
You have to use {{{ }}} for code, even for small things.

@MartinScharrer I think it's from one of the wiki approaches. Hopefully it will get made optional or something

@JosephWright I really hope so!

6:47 PM
@MartinScharrer Yes. As I say, I do prefer Mercurial to Git over all. I find quite a lot of things easier.

@FaheemMitha Probably it is so but not good to have it on Sunday :)

@JosephWright @FaheemMitha: Any idea how I can set the language highlighting in the source viewer of bitbucket?

@MartinScharrer No idea, sorry.

@MartinScharrer It's in Admin, I think, or at least the setting that says 'Language' is

But bitbucket does have a mailing list. Though I've not found them good at replying.

6:53 PM
@egreg: Goal!!! :D

@JosephWright Yes, I set there the language, but it doesn't work for all files.
Apparently it is file extension specific. It works for .cls and .tex files, but not for .dtx and .ins.

@MartinScharrer You could file a bug/issue.
@percusse Because you can't buy batteries?

@FaheemMitha Yes, I'm thinking about this.

@FaheemMitha Yep, but hacked an old adapter so it goes with cable power again :)
This helps to accept the fact there is work tomorrow

@egreg: Goal! (Inter)

7:16 PM
@MarcoDaniel no, I think that's just a bug so I plan to fix it in the main package (perhaps with a compatibility option to re-instate the old version) but I'm not sure if that is quite the right fix at present. So lookout for a longtable update, sometime in the next 20 years at current rate of progress on my package updates.

7:31 PM
@egreg: Goal. :(
I've discovered that memoir has a built-in index feature. Does it support 16+ indices? :)

@PauloCereda: CTAN uploads: easyfig (bug fix) which made me update ctanupload because the DANTE upload form changed a little.
Busy weekend.

@MartinScharrer Robin will have a tough week to update the catalogue. :P
@egreg: 45 minutes to the scudetto! :D
@DavidCarlisle It's not a bug, it's a random feature. :)

7:51 PM
@PauloCereda oh yes sorry terminological error

@DavidCarlisle :)
@egreg: Goal. :(
@egreg: Penalty for Inter! :)
@egreg: Goal! :D

8:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle :-)

8:24 PM
@egreg: Goal!
@egreg: Penalty for Inter! :)
@egreg: Goal! :D
@egreg: Goal! :D

@PauloCereda So what's the score?

@JosephWright Inter 4:2 Milan, Cagliari 0:2 Juventus. :)

@PauloCereda Ah, two matches :-)

8:39 PM
@JosephWright Hold on I'll explain in a minute. :P
@egreg: Champion!
Juventus, campioni d'Italia!
@JosephWright: Those two games were important for Juventus win the championship, so I was watching both. :)

Applying Patch 15 of 23 .....
I should really boot Windows once a week or at least month and install all updates and software patches.

@MartinScharrer Ouch. :) If you are running on a VM, it usually takes way longer. :)

@PauloCereda No, I booted my "real" Windows 7 now.

@PauloCereda Freddy Mercury's singing. :)

@egreg Woohoo!! :)
I think I should record another version for Juve's hymn. :P
@egreg: 7k tifosi invaded the field. :P

9:04 PM
@PauloCereda Good job! Some heartbeats when Milan scored the 2:1. But this year Juve was better. :)
@PauloCereda And 335 rep, today. :)

@egreg Last goal from Maicon was a painting. :)

9:33 PM
Does anybody know if the built-in index feature of memoir support 16+ indices?

@PauloCereda I'm not sure: it uses TeX for writing the index files for MakeIndex from the .aux file, so the limit of 16 should be there. With imakeidx (not still with memoir) one can use the splitindex option which relies on an external program (by Markus Kohm), which doesn't suffer from this limitation.

@egreg Ah thanks. :) I was tempted to migrate my stuff to memoir, but this might be a problem. :)
