8:57 AM
Hi, my TeXStudio (several versions) crashes quite often on several Linux systems with TL2017 since a while. I am still investigating what the reason could be. I assume, that the PDF file is still changing while texstudio tries to read it. If this is correct, it should be an FAQ, but I could not find anything about that problem.
I also tried to compile with latexmk, and create the pdf in an "out" folder and then copy it to the folder where texstudio reads. bpaste.net/show/0e3bc6aaa0b8
but that did not help either. I think my problem is still too vague to prepare a SX Question

9:21 AM
@JonasStein On my Mac OS X machines it doesn't even crash. In the sense that after a few seconds it has been launched, the rainbow wheel starts spinning. I asked at the SourceForge site, but got no feedback. In a few days I'll trash it and say farewell.

9:53 AM
@AlanMunn Deeply sorry, I had mass yesterday. :) And I really didn't get the reference, it's always good to learn new things every day. :)

@egreg, so it freezes on max os x?

@JonasStein On my machine it does.

10:20 AM
People on Math.SE are strange: I posted an answer; some minutes later another one appears, duplicating just one part of my answer; the poster realizes it and removes his answer, adding the comment that I already covered the topic. No upvote.

@egreg do you have already found an alternative editor?

Is this true?

@JonasStein Well, I have TeXStudio and Texmaker just in case somebody’s question is about them. I never use them (nor TeXShop). Sometimes TeXworks, because it's multiplatfrom and simple, so good for my course.

@PauloCereda ask on sceptics...
interesting question...

@JonasStein Not much for the sword, the top hat sells it. :)

@egreg did you have a look at the texstudio source yet? It is very chaotic.

@PauloCereda From €545 up.

Bundles old libraries, and so on.

@JonasStein No wonder it freezes

we had to patch a lot to get a package for Gentoo Linux. Still get warnings while compiling. I wonder, if upstream disabled the compiler warnings.

10:26 AM
@egreg oooooh

@PauloCereda It seems that the sword is cheaper than the hat!

@egreg oh no

@PauloCereda I propose this one ^^^^^

the ubuntu family did not update Texstudio since 2.10.8

@egreg Too regional. :) I had to move to the northeast region. :)

10:33 AM
perhaps because of the instability?

I remember, that we had broken packages in gentoo, because texstudio changed the source after releasing without changing the version number

@AlanMunn ^^

1 hour later…
11:44 AM
@egreg probably he'd noticed that you already have too many votes here and was trying to redress the balance.

@DavidCarlisle No, 200K snob

@egreg such a small number: ignore him and move on!

11:57 AM
@egreg Perhaps it helps to deactivate the reload tex.stackexchange.com/questions/383510/…

@JonasStein I open it with no active file.
@JonasStein But trying to launch it with a file is the same.

@egreg have you deleted your config (backup first)? I had a broken config once which created strange problems

@JonasStein Removed completely ~/.config/texstudio several times (no need to keep a backup).

Can I sync texstudio with an external PDF viewer and disable the internal viewer?

@egreg Where is the bug report you made? I couldn't find one that looks like one of yours.

@egreg Ah. You commented a closed ticket. Perhaps that's why you didn't a feedback. I'm not sure quite sure if one should recommend texstudio -- it seems to get a bit overloaded -- but until now I always had the impression that they react quite reliable to bug reports and feature requests.

@UlrikeFischer A ticket closed for “no feedback” can be reopened when some feedback arrives.

@egreg Yes. But perhaps they missed the feedback.

@UlrikeFischer I think the system notifies about the new post.

@AlanMunn People at the restaurant where I'm eating now talking about how to make a real pesto ligure :):):)
@AlanMunn almost arguing :):):)

12:27 PM
@CarLaTeX 1. get pasta 2. add ketchup 3. watch the world burn

@egreg I don't trust systems ;-)

@UlrikeFischer Yes, it focusses rather on features then stability. I recommended Texstudio till now. But I am unsure now. There are no outstanding alternatives on Linux either.
@greg Ulrike is right. You should either reopen the ticket, or open a new one and link to the old.

@PauloCereda ketchup over the pasta is almost worse than pineapple pizza :):):)

Most likely it got no attention. I am not sure, if any of the devs uses OSX.

@CarLaTeX 1. get pasta 2. add ketchup 3. add pineapple 4. cut it with fork 5. wait for angry mobs

12:35 PM
I think they are 90% on MS Windows

@JonasStein If I ever finish my thesis (which, according to this community folklore, I won't), I have plans for a TeX editor. :)

@PauloCereda let me guess, it will use ink?

@JonasStein I don't get it, sorry.

I promised, that I will use a pen and ink in my next life instead a computer.

@PauloCereda Will you call it QuackTeX?

12:39 PM
@JonasStein I won't do it. I don't care about buggy software.

@CarLaTeX No, ArTeXmis

I compile with latexmk (a lualatex document to pdf) and get the warning
lualatex: (Pdf)LaTeX failed to generate the expected log file
Latexmk: Did not finish processing file
(Pdf)LaTeX failed to generate the expected log file 'temp/text.log'
Does this make sense? Does lualatex rely on pdflatex?
@PauloCereda why not join TeXstudio and help to tidy it up? It is the most promising project, I think.

@JonasStein No, but perhaps you called latexmk with pdflatex, or the message is simply wrong.

@JonasStein I would like to try something new. :)

@PauloCereda you could try thesis writing

12:48 PM
@PauloCereda I would have expected a more weird name from you :)

@DavidCarlisle you are mean
@CarLaTeX oi

Jun 29 at 16:15, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)

@DavidCarlisle :)

@DavidCarlisle It seems to me that you and @PauloCereda are a bit repetitive... :):):)

@CarLaTeX well I never

12:58 PM
@PauloCereda Nooo, please do it again!
@PauloCereda How can we do without!

@UlrikeFischer this is my .latexmk bpaste.net/show/0e3bc6aaa0b8 and I call it with latexmk -gg test.tex

Perhaps $lualatex was not sufficient
and I need something like $use_lua=1;

@PauloCereda Ops, sorry for my English!

oh there is $pdf_mode=4 already in my .latexmk this should stand for lualatex-> pdf

1:08 PM
@CarLaTeX no worries. :)

even latexmk -lualatex -gg -interaction=batchmode test.tex
ends with lualatex: (Pdf)LaTeX failed to generate the expected log file

1:44 PM
Prepared now a question for that problem. Is there anything I should add to tex.stackexchange.com/questions/383533/… as information?

2:23 PM
Technology is amazing: a dinosaur taco holder.

SBM
Hello

@SBM Aloha!

SBM
@PauloCereda Is that some kind of food?

@SBM We ducks don't eat spicy food, it makes me wackier!

SBM
@PauloCereda Oh, we have like a big scale from not spicy at all to a high level of spiciness
I'd be a little biased towards non spicy though about Midway

2:38 PM
@SBM :)

@PauloCereda It could be good also for crepes

@CarLaTeX ooh

SBM
@CarLaTeX crepes?

@CarLaTeX Palačinka!

3:13 PM
@CarLaTeX :D I'm not surprised at all!

2 hours later…
4:45 PM
@egreg What language is that?
@AlanMunn Food is a very serious thing for Italian people :):):)

4:57 PM
@CarLaTeX We've noticed. :)

@AlanMunn 😆😆😆😆

@CarLaTeX @egreg probably intends it to be Czech, but it could be any of a few languages in that general vicinity.

@AlanMunn Oooh

== Vidi i: == blini, ruske palačinke...
@CarLaTeX Choose among Czech, Croatian or Slovenian.

5:12 PM
@egreg Are you also polyglot? :):):)

@CarLaTeX My tours in Slovenia and Croatia…

@egreg Oooh

5:30 PM
@CarLaTeX Most people in shops, bars and restaurants speak Italian. ;-)

@egreg Oooh I've never visited those countries...

@PauloCereda Thank you :) But only upvotes will bring new duck :)

@samcarter o.O
Apple today removed the iPod nano and iPod shuffle from its website and online store around the world, suggesting the iconic portable media players may be discontinued. Apple continues to sell the iPod touch. Beyond new colors and storage capacities, Apple had last updated the iPod nano in October 2012 and the iPod shuffle in September 2010. Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015 with an 8-megapixel rear camera. Apple introduced the iPod shuffle in January 2005, followed by the iPod nano in September 2005. In total, there were seven generations of the iPod nano, and four generations

@PauloCereda Not surprising since almost everyone uses their phone. I haven't used my iPod in years.

6:11 PM
@AlanMunn Indeed, but I simply love my iPod shuffle. I really like to jog with it.

@PauloCereda Yes, it's true that they are much smaller and so useful in that context.

@AlanMunn Too bad that an iPod shuffle holds only 2GB. And I am glad that I managed to get rid of iTunes a long time ago.

7:07 PM
@ChristianHupfer hi!

7:43 PM
@PauloCereda Sorry, busy answering dupes, like many do ;-)

@PauloCereda A Brazil duck for you:
    \begin{tikzpicture}[y=0.80pt, x=0.80pt, yscale=-1.000000, xscale=1.000000, inner sep=0pt, outer sep=0pt]
    	\duck{Gold}
    	\addshirt{NavyBlue}
    	\addhair{SeaGreen}
    \end{tikzpicture}

@samcarter ooh

Does anyone know if there's a way to dynamically set TOC section etc. num width in memoir?

@CarLaTeX In about two and a half hours I can be in Slovenia. Less than one hour more and I can be in Fiume or Abbazia.

@ChristianHupfer oh no

8:00 PM
@egreg Oooh, from Milan I think you have to add at least a couple of hours...
@samcarter baby ducks :):):)

@CarLaTeX You can go to Switzerland in less time. It's in the plans for next month: Gran San Bernardo. It would be less than 1000 km from my holiday place (in two days, of course).

@egreg Yes, I visited Switzerland many times, but I have never gone to Gran San Bernardo :):):)

If I want to save the current value of a length, then change its value, then restore to the saved value, can I just use \setlength{\saved}{\current} ... \setlength{\current}{new-value} ... \setlength{\current}{\saved}? This doesn't seem to work.

8:39 PM
@AlanMunn Why not using a group wrapped around the change of your length?
\documentclass{article}

\newlength{\foo}
\newlength{\foosave}

\begin{document}

\setlength{\foo}{1in}

foo is \the\foo

\setlength{\foosave}{\foo}
\setlength{\foo}{2in}

foosave is \the\foosave\ and foo is \the\foo

\setlength{\foo}{\foosave}

Now foo is \the\foo

\end{document}
@AlanMunn: Works as expected

@ChristianHupfer Yes, my problem was that I was doing it in the TOC. But I can write \begingroup and \endgroup to the TOC which solves the problem without having to save anything.

1 hour later…
10:02 PM
@JosephWright I just got email from a chemistry student finishing his PhD and using my thesis class. He's working on promoting LaTeX in his research group too.

@AlanMunn Cool
