Q: Problem with \thesistitle in Masters/Doctoral Thesis tempalte

PauI have downloaded the fantastic template for doctoral thesis available in https://www.latextemplates.com/template/masters-doctoral-thesis. I have used it before I had already adapted the contents for my thesis. However, when I tried to compile it with MiKTeX after the last update I got this prob...

@CarLaTeX i hate that template.

@Johannes_B From the comments I have seen around here, you are not alone! :):):)

Q: All uses of LaTeX (I never use LaTeX except for ...)

Vid MerljakI am designing a comical T-shirt about LaTeX and I would like it to boast about all the purposes that one can use LaTeX for. I started with I never use LaTEX except for typesetting documents. and then remembered that you could also make (Beamer) presentations, draw figures, and, well, make ...

I ARRIVED BECAUSE OF CHOCOLATE
@AlanMunn Amazing. :) I love how Starbucks is typically associated with Apple fanboys. :)

@AlanMunn: I don't know how should I feel about this game: majornelson.com/2017/07/25/…

12:05 PM
I'm eating horrible dishes at a sea-view restaurant in Monterosso (OK, I had it coming, you could see a mile away that it was a tourist trap).

@CarLaTeX So... you didn't sea* it coming, eh? :)
/ba dum tss

@PauloCereda LOL

@PauloCereda I know even less about Canadian football than I do about American football.

@AlanMunn I believe one has to say sorry after each tackle. :)

@PauloCereda :)

Too quiet in here...
quaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

4:39 PM
@PauloCereda It's Summer in our hemisphere, we are all on holiday!

@CarLaTeX Speak for yourself: I'm reinstalling TeX Live (historical versions)
Will miss the Mac but the cost had got too high ...

@JosephWright Give me your Macbook. :)

@PauloCereda It's dead :(

@JosephWright Bereft of life, it rests in peace?

@PauloCereda Yup: Dell XPS is quite good so far

4:42 PM
@JosephWright :)

@JosephWright ops...

@CarLaTeX I traditionally have TL'09-date on my laptop: covers what I think the team nowadays think of as supported releases

@PauloCereda Drawback of automatic back-reference in chat ^^^

5:07 PM
Every so often you really need to resist the urge to post LMGTFY links.
@JosephWright How did it die?

@AlanMunn What did I do this time? :)

@PauloCereda LMGTFY, not YAPM. :)

@AlanMunn ah sorry. :)

@PauloCereda If you look at some recent questions you'll see what I mean.

@AlanMunn Ah!

5:24 PM
@JosephWright Do the text building blocks require voting on meta if I want to add a new one?
For those with procrastination needs. World Fencing Championships live feed.

@AlanMunn I'd say no: experienced users are trusted to add useful bits.

@egreg That's what I would think too. I'm going to add one about code fragments that I've been using. It's a bit less wordy than the one that's there, and I think it helps focus people on making a MWE without pointing them to a huge meta link about them.

6:11 PM
@ChristianHupfer: Hi!

6:39 PM
@AlanMunn: Do you know that one of John Lithgow's sons was one of the students in the class of Dick Solomon?

@PauloCereda No. I know who John Lithgow is, but not who Dick Solomon is.

@AlanMunn Dick Solomon = his role in 3rd Rock from the Sun.
Sorry for a brief YAPM. :)

@PauloCereda It was bound to happen sooner or later. I'm relatively TV illiterate (or whatever the word would be.)

@AlanMunn I heard the drama now is about Netflix and chill. :)

@PauloCereda :)

7:07 PM
I'm trying to figure out a way to change the tocdepth before the first section but only for that section, so I need to reinstate it after the section, ideally without a user-level command. I'm using memoir which has a complicated \section command with two optional args.
Conceptually I want \settocdepth{chapter}\section[][]{}\settocdepth{subsubsection}, so that the user just writes \section as normal. Any ideas? If section were an environment this would be easy...
Figured it out. memoir conveniently has hooks at each level. Nice.

@AlanMunn There's nothing that the wompom memoir cannot do.

@PauloCereda Lucky for me, too, because there's no limit to the insanity that the thesis office requirements can be.

@AlanMunn I will probably switch to memoir soon, well, abntex but right now it's the same thing. :) I am sticking with KOMA for now.

@PauloCereda The documentation for KOMA is still unbearable, which is why I've never used it.

@AlanMunn Agreed. Unless you can read the original in German.

7:24 PM
@PauloCereda So they say. But I'm not convinced if the German is structured like the English. It's never been a problem with the quality of the English itself.

@AlanMunn :)

@PauloCereda Just for curiosity, how can you write the ---- over a word in this chat?

strikeout
@CarLaTeX Three hyphens on either side.

@AlanMunn Thank you!

7:41 PM
@CarLaTeX it's tricky I have no idea. :)
---not my fault--- will produce not my fault

7:55 PM
@PauloCereda Oddly enough, --- my thesis --- will produce .

@AlanMunn I will flag that as offensive. :)

@PauloCereda I remember the first time I flagged something in chat, simply because I wanted to delete one of my own posts, and I didn't realize that flagging in chat is the nuclear option. Suddenly the room filled up with mods from all over the SE network. Oops.

@AlanMunn Indeed! Bruno Le Floch once tried that "just for fun" and we got almost eleven lectures on how one should not do that. They even threatened suspending Bruno for 45 minutes.

@PauloCereda Why is it so serious?

@CarLaTeX Because every 10k+ user in every chat room in the SE universe gets notified, specially if you are a mod, and can go directly to the source of request.

8:01 PM
@CarLaTeX I think that because chat is real time, any kind of abusive or offensive behaviour is squelched as soon as possible, so all available people are notified.

Oooh

@PauloCereda Are you sure it's all >10k users? Surely that would mean many of us would get such notifications, and I never have.

@AlanMunn Yes, I am sure. I got notifications once in a while, it's similar to the round thingy you get for mentions, but blue. And when you go the chat room, the offended message has a blue tick near it.

@PauloCereda I guess I never pay attention. Does it only show up on the main SE page where all the chat rooms are? (i.e., can it be seen from within here?)

@AlanMunn I think you can see only in here.

8:07 PM
@PauloCereda Really? I don't see any notification bar here, but if I click on the "all rooms" button, then I see what I think you're talking about.

@AlanMunn A circled number can appear on your gravatar next to the message box
@AlanMunn It usually disappears in a short time

@egreg Amazing. I see it now, but I've never noticed it in all the time here (or if I have I've never investigated it in any way.)

There are sometimes messages in Russian, which @DavidCarlisle would be able to judge in a few seconds

@egreg Niet

@PauloCereda Ich lieb' dich nicht du liebst mich nicht.
(This is a two level multilingual pun...which only you are likely to get I think.)

8:13 PM
@AlanMunn “Cred'io ch'ei credette ch'io credesse”?

@AlanMunn Please explain to us!

@egreg :) loved by linguists everywhere.
@CarLaTeX I'm curious to see if @PauloCereda got the reference.

@AlanMunn Dante was a genius!

@AlanMunn OK, I'll wait for the smart duck!

@egreg Indeed.

8:28 PM
@AlanMunn It's a pity that reading the Commedia is inflicted to students in the wrong way: do long paraphrases and learn tons of details instead of concentrating on the greater heights in it that often show pure poetry. A worse fate is for “I promessi sposi”, that students have (had, perhaps) to read in tenth grade: they come to hate it, notwithstanding it's a great piece of literature.

@egreg Yes, I think this is unfortunately true in all countries approach to teaching literature, especially in high school. Unless you have a remarkable teacher it's very easy to end up hating things.
@egreg And poetry suffers an even worse fate than prose, usually.

@AlanMunn I reread “I promessi sposi” in my last high school year and was hooked: it was during Christmas holidays, I finished it in three days.

@egreg It happened to me to re-read this: it.m.wikisource.org/wiki/Rime_(Dante)/… some years after high school and I thought "but it's so beautiful, why I hated it at school?"

@CarLaTeX Since our resident duck seems to have swum off, I'll explain. I was responding to @PauloCereda 's "Niet". The line is from a song called Da da da. :)

@AlanMunn I remember this song, I was a teenager at that time!

8:43 PM
@CarLaTeX Really!

@egreg Of course! Also Falco was famous at that time and he sang in German, too!
