Another question. Suppose I have counters fooi, fooii, fooiii etc. Is there a way to construct a command that takes a numeric value and sets the appropriate counter? e.g. \myset{2}{10} would be \setcounter{fooii}{10}.
@GonzaloMedina Yes. The font idea is senseless. It's really easy to create the board and place the pieces. Now I'm working on having it generate the boards based on the actual moves, rather than having to place each board separately.
So the idea is to have a command containing the position (possibly the number of circles in every numbered triangle (sorry, I don't know the technical names))?
@GonzaloMedina Yes. It should work like this: \move{13}{8}{24}{18} would decrement count13 by 1 and increment count8 by 1. But I'm having problems with how to use \foreach \x in pgf and then construct the counter name from the \x.
@PeterGrill My minimal example actually worked, although I thought when I posted it it didn't. The problem is more complicated than that. If I can make a good failing example, I'll edit the question and undelete it.
@PeterGrill Actually it has much to do with foreach because if I put the contents of \mylist into a node text i.e. \node {\mylist}; gives the full list. So apparently I retrieve the correct list. But \foreach doesn't like the format.
@percusse Yeah that seems to work just fine. But try \show\mylist with the original verion before the \foreach and you'd see that it only has the first line.
@percusse Not sure it is working. Just seems that you have ONE node. Better would be to use the first as a coordinate like egreg did and the second as the node content.
Yes, I have updated my answer with my crippled version. I think it's beyond me to collect extra braces inside the list. I can't safely introduce braces when I'm populating the list. So, I leave it to our masters.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep track of n booleans so that I can have the equivalent of ifbool1 ifbool2 etc? (I need the numbers, so that I can generate them in a loop.)
@AlanMunn I don't have an elegant one, but there is a package that can convert numbers to words so you could figure out that you want ifboolSeven when looking for the 7th... I was just working this afternoon where I had a loop "1/One, 2/Two, 3/Three,..." so was going to implement something along these lines.

I was stunned by the elegant appearance of the Tau manifesto page, for which the source is in LaTeX. The author used a home-made tool that he calls PolyTeXnic, but which he is not willing to release.
How difficult would it be to reproduce his result? I'm leaning towards using PlasTeX as the base...
@JosephWright The OP seems to want to know how to get a tex source and use plasTeX (a document processing framework I don't like :P ) and mimic the output of the Tau manifesto. :)

Got fed up with having "Fr\"olicher" like that in my documents so switched to XeTeX and am using the TeX input method for writing it. It is slightly scary to see \epsilon magically transform into ε as I write. I do agree with the claims, though, despite my proficiency in reading TeX, it is easier to see what "for each (n) there is a smooth functional (f_n : \R × S → \R) such that (f_n^{-1}(0,∞) ⊆ W)" means than without the replacements.
any firefox users seeing odd styling today? On the meta site it's OK, but on the main text.sx site there are css failures all over the place, eg the dropdown box if you hover over your name at the top has a transparent background so the text is mixed up with the underlying text (looks OK in chrome)
@DavidCarlisle Is is possible that your firefox got updated without you noticing? If the underlying mozilla libraries get updated and you don't restart firefox then it can lead to Serious Issues.
No Aurora is the more stable build (still pre beta) this is nightly. One has to live on the edge (especially if testing mathml in html5, which is what i really do, not Tex these days)
