Another question. Suppose I have counters fooi, fooii, fooiii etc. Is there a way to construct a command that takes a numeric value and sets the appropriate counter? e.g. \myset{2}{10} would be \setcounter{fooii}{10}.
01:14
@khademul are you here?
How do I create a chat room and how do I invite someone to this new room?
@GonzaloMedina Hi Gonzalo, if you click on the SiteRooms button, you'll get to a page which has a link to create a new room.
@AlanMunn Yes. I've already created it; I don't know, however, how can I invite someone to this room.
And, excuse my rudeness, hi, Alan, and thanks!
01:38
Ah, only users with 20+rep. can use chat rooms. That was the problem.
@GonzaloMedina No rudeness at all. How are you?
Fine. Enjoying the last hours of this beautiful holiday; and you?
@GonzaloMedina Procrastinating big time. I'm building a tikz backgammon display system.

@AlanMunn inspired by the backgammon question?
Sounds really nice!
@GonzaloMedina Yes. The font idea is senseless. It's really easy to create the board and place the pieces. Now I'm working on having it generate the boards based on the actual moves, rather than having to place each board separately.
01:58
So the idea is to have a command containing the position (possibly the number of circles in every numbered triangle (sorry, I don't know the technical names))?
@GonzaloMedina Yes. It should work like this: \move{13}{8}{24}{18} would decrement count13 by 1 and increment count8 by 1. But I'm having problems with how to use \foreach \x in pgf and then construct the counter name from the \x.
@AlanMunn I am sure you'll solve your problems and hopefully we will soon have backgammon.sty in CTAN.
I have to leave now. Bye, Alan and happy coding!
02:45
@AlanMunn: How come you deleted your question?? I couldn't figure it out... If there is an answer you should post it?
@PeterGrill My minimal example actually worked, although I thought when I posted it it didn't. The problem is more complicated than that. If I can make a good failing example, I'll edit the question and undelete it.
@AlanMunn Ok, seemed interesting..
@percusse: With the change I suggested it appears that only the first line is read.
03:06
@YiannisLazarides: You should have a look at the suggested edits from low rep users... and make the decision of reject or accept.
@PeterGrill Indeed, I am trying to see the cause.
If I change the file content as {0/b},{1/d},{2/f},{3/h}and modify the code it works as expected.
@percusse I do not have much experience with pgfplostable so can't help, but that seems like a good clue...
@PeterGrill Actually it has much to do with foreach because if I put the contents of \mylist into a node text i.e. \node {\mylist}; gives the full list. So apparently I retrieve the correct list. But \foreach doesn't like the format.
@PeterGrill Thanks, just had a look.
03:22
@percusse When I did as per the initial suggestion, and use \show\mymacro it only showed the first line.
@PeterGrill Try this for example, with only pgfplots package...
\begin{tikzpicture}
\pgfplotstableread[header=false]{
{0/b},{1/d},{2/f},{3/h}
}\thereadtable
\pgfplotstablegetelem{0}{[index]0}\of\thereadtable
\edef\mylist{\pgfplotsretval}
\pgfplotstablegetelem{0}{[index]0}\of\thereadtable
\foreach\x / \y in  \mylist {
    \draw (\x,0) node {\y};
}
\end{tikzpicture}
oops there is one get elem command extra you can delete it
@percusse Yeah that seems to work just fine. But try \show\mylist with the original verion before the \foreach and you'd see that it only has the first line.
@PeterGrill Indeed, it's slowly getting beyond my understanding.
@percusse: I think the OP in this question tex.stackexchange.com/questions/48620/… ended up using your raisebox idea
@percusse Interestigly, if you use \show\pgfplotsretval that seems to have all the list memebers...
03:28
@cmhughes can you also include that into your answer please? :)
@PeterGrill Maybe the line break is the culprit here.
@percusse I wasn't sure if I should, because it was your comment that lead him to it :)
@cmhughes No problem, my comments are rarely on the spot :)
@percusse Ok, if you're sure then I'll make the edit :) Thanks very much!
@cmhughes No thank you for your kind reminder. I appreciate it.
@percusse no problem :)
03:32
@percusse I take that back. If you use \show\pgfplotsretval before the \edef\mylist you'll see that you only have the first line of the file
@PeterGrill Let me see what I am doing wrong exactly and show the working example to you.
03:43
@PeterGrill OK this looks like working:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{filecontents,pgfplotstable}
\begin{filecontents*}{assocFile.dat}
0/b
1/d
2/f
3/h
\end{filecontents*}
\pgfplotstableread[header=false]{assocFile.dat}\mytable
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\pgfplotstablegetelem{0}{[index]0}\of\mytable
\edef\forlist{\pgfplotsretval}
\pgfplotsforeachungrouped \x in {1,2,3} {
\pgfplotstablegetelem{\x}{[index]0}\of\mytable
\edef\forlist{\forlist, \pgfplotsretval}
}
\node {\forlist};
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}
At least the node text is what we are looking for.
By the way \pgfplotsretval is very much like \pgfmathresult so it is constantly being overwritten.
@percusse Not sure it is working. Just seems that you have ONE node. Better would be to use the first as a coordinate like egreg did and the second as the node content.
@PeterGrill Ah, yes of course. By working I meant the list is populated under \forlist
I should have changed it to \mylist for consistency
But if I use it in the \foreach setting it just doesn't understand the variable distinction
Seems like there is an extra level of nesting going on...
Yes, I have updated my answer with my crippled version. I think it's beyond me to collect extra braces inside the list. I can't safely introduce braces when I'm populating the list. So, I leave it to our masters.
@PeterGrill Thanks, though. I learnt yet another detail :)
@percusse I'd recommend you add the link I mentioned in the solution to reference the missing {}, and then we can delete the comments
03:53
@PeterGrill Ah, I forgot that. Just a sec.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how to keep track of n booleans so that I can have the equivalent of ifbool1 ifbool2 etc? (I need the numbers, so that I can generate them in a loop.)
@PeterGrill Done.
@AlanMunn A binary number maybe? :)
@AlanMunn I don't have an elegant one, but there is a package that can convert numbers to words so you could figure out that you want ifboolSeven when looking for the 7th... I was just working this afternoon where I had a loop "1/One, 2/Two, 3/Three,..." so was going to implement something along these lines.
@percusse I think whole problem is having having numbers in macro names.
@percusse Actually I realise now that I need a three valued logic, so they're not really boolean. I think I'll just make a bunch of macros with numbers in them, one for each and build them with \csname ... \endcsname
@AlanMunn I wonder if you can put those definitions into the \foreach using pgffor
Also instead of reading maybe you can use the answers of this for definitions

Q: Read command with varying input arguments

FritsOut of curiosity I'd like to define a LaTeX command that looks like: \newcommand{\trigger}{out1,out2,...,outn} with a rather strange function (at least, I couldn't find anything like this elsewhere): First of all, the number of arguments out1,out2,... etc. are variables. Then, every time the ...

04:29
Yes you can: it's pretty neat:
\foreach \x in {1,...,24}{
\newcounter{bk@pt\x}
\expandafter\def\csname bk@state\x\endcsname{empty}
}

Et voilà, 24 counters and 24 macros.
(I still don't know how to format multiple lines of code in chat.)

3 hours later…
07:39
@AlanMunn I think Ctrl + K works, but the code may have to be in a separate post.
\foreach \x in {1,...,24}{
 \newcounter{bk@pt\x}
 \expandafter\def\csname bk@state\x\endcsname{empty}
 }
Yep, that worked. Just pasted the code and hit Ctrl + K, which indents everything.

Q: LaTeX to HTML: PolyTeXnic and PlasTeX

OlivierI was stunned by the elegant appearance of the Tau manifesto page, for which the source is in LaTeX. The author used a home-made tool that he calls PolyTeXnic, but which he is not willing to release. How difficult would it be to reproduce his result? I'm leaning towards using PlasTeX as the base...

Nothing special in the document: anyone understand what is wanted?
09:35
@JosephWright The OP seems to want to know how to get a tex source and use plasTeX (a document processing framework I don't like :P ) and mimic the output of the Tau manifesto. :)
10:02
@egreg: only 5 rep to reach rep cap today. :)
10:18
@PauloCereda I sincerely hope he doesn't want to mimic the content of the tau manifesto.
Anyway, I just dropped by to see if anything ever came of the idea to gather certain questions into a semi-dynamic FAQ? If so, I have one to add as it's something that I keep looking up (as I can never remember the answer) and can never figure out the right search parameters until the third or fourth attempt. It is:

Q: How do I typeset arbitrary fractions like the standard symbol for .5 = ½?

Tomas LyckenI know I've seen somewhere how to typeset 1/2 as ½, but with arbitrary fractions (that is, a macro that takes two arguments and makes the first denominator and the second numerator...). Now I can't seem to find it. How do I typeset an arbitrary fraction the same way as ½?

@AndrewStacey Agreed. :)
Got fed up with having "Fr\"olicher" like that in my documents so switched to XeTeX and am using the TeX input method for writing it. It is slightly scary to see \epsilon magically transform into ε as I write. I do agree with the claims, though, despite my proficiency in reading TeX, it is easier to see what "for each (n) there is a smooth functional (f_n : \R × S → \R) such that (f_n^{-1}(0,∞) ⊆ W)" means than without the replacements.
(Aagh, ( ↦ \( in the above)
with or without replacements, I have no idea what that means :)
I'm tempted to migrate to XeTeX, but I'm still scared. :) I already migrated from latin-1 to utf-8, but I'm still reticent to go further. :P
@RoelofSpijker I did use the comparative: "easier".
10:37
@AndrewStacey Yes, you did. And I can see that it would be quicker to parse that than the TeX equivalent :)
10:50
any firefox users seeing odd styling today? On the meta site it's OK, but on the main text.sx site there are css failures all over the place, eg the dropdown box if you hover over your name at the top has a transparent background so the text is mixed up with the underlying text (looks OK in chrome)
@DavidCarlisle: Looks fine here
@DavidCarlisle Is is possible that your firefox got updated without you noticing? If the underlying mozilla libraries get updated and you don't restart firefox then it can lead to Serious Issues.
Oh forgot to say, i run a bleeding edge firefox nightly that updates at least once a day:-) (but I did just restart FF with no change on the site)
I'm running a super-old verison, so my input here is really without any value.
well, 3.6.17 don't actually know how old that is. If it's in style with the rest of my system it will probably be around 2008 though.
3? is prehistoric (I'm running 14 :-)
11:05
@DavidCarlisle Wow! Is it Aurora? :)
No Aurora is the more stable build (still pre beta) this is nightly. One has to live on the edge (especially if testing mathml in html5, which is what i really do, not Tex these days)
11:23
@DavidCarlisle Should have known. And here was me thinking I was up with the cool gang by running FF11.
@DavidCarlisle Bleeding edge FTW. :P
Hi,
I have a more sophisticated question than the one I asked about multiedges of a graph.
4
Q: Can we define a multiedge command using tikz?

BarishI usually need to draw graphs with multiple edges. I would really appreciate if someone can tell me how to write a multiple edge command which will allow me to write one line instead of repeatedly many. Say the name of my edge command is \myedge[m] meaning that I will draw m edges between two nod...

I do have this operation on graphs which gives a partial order....
HOwever it is important to visualize them and while doing so I need to keep doing this again and again...
@Barish Asking follow-up questions on the main site is completely okay. So long as the question has a new angle on it and you link to the old one, then post it on the main site.
11:32
Is tikz strong enough to implement my operation so that I can actually draw all those graphs and possibly retrieve data from them at the same time?
I see
ok... Thanks...

2 hours later…
13:04
I added a suggestion name for Fedora 18: fedoraproject.org/wiki/Name_suggestions_for_Fedora_18
Guess which one. :P
13:59
I have a new keynote for April and I have a crazy proposal to talk:
@JosephWright: lots of LaTeX3 examples. :)
@PauloCereda When do we get to see it?
@JosephWright It's a small keynote with no actual implementation, as it's just a proposal. At first, it's a call for ideas, so I'll probably present it for a small group (2 or 3 people), and in Portuguese. But if you want, I can make an English version and send it to you. :)
@PauloCereda Of course: sounds exciting
@JosephWright Thanks. :) I'll see if they like the idea. I'll also try to implement something, but it's a short time.

2 hours later…
15:49
@JosephWright: can you please delete this chat room? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/2842/… I created it to discuss an issue with a user, but he had only 16rep. so he couldn't use chat. Now I don't know how to delete the room. Sorry for bothering you.
@GonzaloMedina Done
16:08
@JosephWright Thank you!
Oh, no chat room.

1 hour later…
17:18
Was the new WinEdt version announced anywhere outside the WinEdt list?
I didn't see it announced anywhere.
17:54
@JosephWright Is that version 7? It's on the website which was updated on Sunday. Haven't seen it anywhere else, but then, I don't get around that much (on the internet).
@DavidCarlisle It's just occurred to me that you might be a perfect person to ask about websites and MathML. Do you know of any websites that you would consider good examples of how web pages with MathML ought to look? I'm looking for ideas for good design.
18:20
@TorbjørnT Thanks for the code formatting info. Now if only I can remember it. :-)
18:39
@JosephWright You changed your picture, now I keep thinking there's someone new in chat.
@TorbjørnT Yes, that's the one. A blog entry upcoming I think :-)
@AlanMunn It was 18 months old :-(
@JosephWright You look much more professional in this one. But you haven't achieved the solemnity of Martin Scharrer.
@AlanMunn At a conference, so I'd got my jacket on. We are actually in a pub in the photo (the Mitre in Oxford, for anyone who knows it)
I was shortlisted for a job at Oxford once. They were very concerned that being American trained I wouldn't go out drinking with the students, which they stressed was required, or at least generally expected.
@AlanMunn If I manage to go to Boston for TUG2012, you should go there so I can interview you live for the TeXtalk. Of course, since the "who's Alan Munn" myth is very strong, we can interview you in the shadows and your voice could be dubbed, sounding, say, like Al Pacino's. :)
19:03
@JosephWright Not sure I've ever actually been in the Mitre. I'm having trouble picturing where it is.
@AndrewStacey On the High Street - shows up on Google Maps :-) maps.google.co.uk/maps/…
@JosephWright The pubs are so famous. I'd like to visit one. :)
Oh, of course. Yes, corner of the Turl. Been in there once. Bit posh for the likes of me, I'm afraid.
19:40
"When a set is defined, there are two possibilities. Either it is an open set, or it isn't. If it is an open set, that's that. But if it isn't, there are two possibilities. Either it has void interior, or it doesn't. If it has non-void interior, that's that. But if it has void interior, there are two possibilities ... " Sometimes, writing maths gets a bit same-y.
@AndrewStacey A very unbalanced tree :-)
@JosephWright True, true. Evidently spent too long at the Mitre before starting that proof.
(actually I was wondering if @PauloCereda would spot the reference as I've been unreliably informed that the original is Brazilian)
@AndrewStacey Really? I can't remember.
19:55
Something about "When a child is born, there are two possibilities ..." and goes through some long story following the possibilities. I know it from a kids book called "When a monster is born" but the book attributes it to a custom and I thought it was from Brazil. As I read it, I thought "Great! I'm teaching my kids about binary trees!" (This is really true.)
I'm probably misremembering the country of origin then. However, I am in the middle of writing a proof that has that flavour (and it's as tedious a proof as it sounds).
Ouch. :)
20:34
@PauloCereda Del Piero! Juve 1:0 Milan.
@egreg The game! I forgot about it! Oh my!
@egreg: Phew, there's the second half. :)
Milan has to score 3 goals, I guess.
@PauloCereda With two there would be the overtime.
@egreg Ah indeed. Milan would be reverting the score from the first game.
20:54
@egreg: Uh-oh. :(
21:24
@egreg: Uh-oh²! :(

Q: Customizing figure counters

EnchiladaI'm using the book class. I want to count my figures as "Figure 1.", "Figure 2.", etc. throughout my document. The numbers should not reset when new chapter, section or subsection begins. The counter should just keep on going until the very end of the document. How do I accomplish this? (I'm also...

Q: Free Open Type / True Type "Garamond" with real small caps and old style figures?

JörgDoes anyone know of a free open type or true type font from the Garamond font family that provides real small caps and old style figures? I have been looking around now for a while, but have been unsuccessful.

@lockstep Isn't migration an option? Or should it be closed anyway?
@TorbjørnT I think the rule is "Only migrate better-than-average questions; close the rest".
@lockstep Yup
@Joseph It's the build of tomorrow, WinEdt, as the date shows ;)
21:37
@lockstep OK. Speaking of closing, here's one the OP solved himself (see comment): tex.stackexchange.com/questions/47115/…
@TorbjørnT Indeed -- voted to close.
@StefanKottwitz The one I grabbed is from the 17th
I noticed WinEdt 7.0 [Build: 20120321] on the homepage (Last change: Tuesday, March 20, 2012 14:47)
@StefanKottwitz :-)
TeXworks² still in dev... Oops.
@egreg: Goal!!!!
21:54
@PauloCereda Is this myth due to the fact that there are no pictures of me. Live chat and a new backgammon package isn't evidence enough? :-)
@AlanMunn Sure. <3 But you know people. :)
BTW I'd love to learn backgammon. :)
22:16
@PauloCereda And what a goal!
@egreg Indeed! I shouted 'goal' for 10 secs!
22:46
@PauloCereda It has enough chance to make it fun, and enough skill that a good player will win in the long run.
@AlanMunn Cool! :)
I like how we can filter questions by tags, but would be useful to be able to filter them based on who posted the question too!
23:03
@PauloCereda I usually don't shout, but I rejoiced for a longer time. :)
@egreg It was a great shot!
@egreg: I have a RC4 version of TeXPrinter. Could you test it? texprinter.sourceforge.net/texprinter21RC4.jar If you tell me it's OK, I'll update the sources and release the binaries. :)
@PauloCereda Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: Bad version number in .class file
java version "1.5.0_30"
23:20
@egreg Hm I will try to fix it.
@egreg: I'm uploading a new version. :)
@PauloCereda Is it the same link?
@egreg No, I removed the reference. :)
I'll compile with a Java 5 JDK, so it will work. (hopefully) :)
Hi @Gonzalo! :)
23:37
@PauloCereda Hi, Paulo; the notification "boink" scared me ;-)
@GonzaloMedina Oh sorry! :) Don't you use Chrome, do you? It seems to be more scarier, as it has desktop notifications too! :)
I'm a Firefox user. :)
Not as cool as David. :)
@PauloCereda I do use chrome.
But I haven't ever enabled desktop notification...
Let me do a test.
Ah. :)
@GonzaloMedina: Boo!
:P
Desktop notification activated. Ah, now I see the "purpose" of that option. I don't like it. Desktop notification disabled.
23:45
Do you know, @PauloCereda, if a new user has a rep. limit for being able to upvote answers to questions he/she has asked?
@GonzaloMedina Hm I guess there's something like this.
But I'm not sure.
Projects in TeXnicCenter 2 is killing me, Just tried WinEdt 7 (still have that odd oldness feel), I don't like TeXMaker. I think I'm the problem...
@percusse I had problems with TeXnicCenter 2, but I didn't get used to the other editors. When in Windows, I decided to stick with TeXworks.
@PauloCereda Single files are handled nicely but I need to keep this project structure that is killing me. I wouldn't call a thesis a project for starters :)
@percusse Ah indeed. :) What if you downgrade to TeXnic 1.x?
@egreg: could you try this one? texprinter.sourceforge.net/texprinterOpenJDK.jar If it doesn't work, I'll compile with Java 5. I made an attempt of cross-compiling with Java 7.
