Given the number of mathematicians who hang out here (I am not of that tribe!), I thought I'd mention today's "Life of the Day" from the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography: James Joseph Sylvester (that URL will only point at the correct article today, I believe). A fascinating life!
@JosephWright -- is this evening the time for "answer the unanswered", or consider it a holiday and do it next week instead? (your avatar has changed, and i don't recognize you!)
for those of you who attended tug 2016, one of the speakers was federico garcia-de castro, of alia musica, pittsburgh. i just found this, which is what he does in his "day job".
The security of public key cryptography relies on computers not being able to generate anywhere near 2256 guesses per any reasonable time length. The obvious implications of a computer this powerful would be that Bitcoin and all other cryptocurrencies would be hacked immediately. But what other l...

In Texmaker, I can collapse sections of the document to make it easier to navigate. However, when I search for a term, and it appears in one of these sections, the window does not jump to it and it remains hidden (because it is collapsed).
Is there a way to make Texmaker expand sections and jump...

Ok, this is the preamble of my .tex file, that I'm compiling with Texmaker 4.4.1 32bits under Windows 8:

smfbook is quite standard for maths in France (I'm by the way writing in French, as the included packages may ...
I have tried several approaches to solve my problem but unfortunately none successful yet. I can not find documentation mentioning how to solve this particular case. My problem is that I am using a subfigure in beamer and I am trying to create multiple \ref points before the \label appear in the ...
@TorbjørnT. I don't think it's completely off topic; there's at least a workaround that could be proposed either using tools available as part of the TeX distribution or by making sure R produces proper PDF. I guess I'd leave it open.
I'm new on latex and I'm using texmaker. To teach myself I just followed the instructions I had from a video course on youtube and I tried it on my personal computer. First of all I created a .tex file, I saved it, I typed "documentclass",and then followed the first instruction "begin document". ...
I am new to LaTex but I study chemistry and I am looking for alternatives to word, openoffice writer, libreoffice writer... MiKTex would not install on my computer and I instead installed Tex Live on my Windows 10 computer to act as a distributor for Texmaker. I am having troubles building my doc...
I just did a clean install of windows 10, and I'm trying to get latex up and running again.
I just installed the basic MikTex 2.9 package and TexMaker. I gave MikTex the authority to install packages on the fly without asking.
The first problem that I have run into is that my figures are no ...
Can someone please run me through the steps to install the TikZ package on TeXstudio? I have been struggling for hours but just can’t seem to get it installed so that I can use it.
Thank you in advance.
Consider the following code:

I'm writing my thesis using the memoir class and natbib, with citations such that, at the first occurrence, the full list of authors is given, and "et al." from the second onwards:

Is there any downside of using file names with \setmainfont, except for the fact that it takes more typing?
I ask because I am experiencing problems with using names for TeX Gyre fonts on my Linux Mint box: as explained here, XeLaTeX on Linux will not find TeX-installed fonts by name. Hence, I i...
I'm a new Pandoc user, primarily for converting .tex files in .odt format.
The following command:

Works well apart for the fact that it can't find images, as from the pandoc output:
pandoc.exe: Could not find image `evolution.jpg', skipping...
The clickable box (the actual hyperlink) in the TOC is too heigh when using the Latin Modern Math font.

I managed to get a capacity exceeded message by adding a bit too many named coordinates to a number of tikzpictures and so started to test and now wonder if it is possible to release unneeded space in the string pool.
As an example: The following document creates quite a number of (local!) defi...
^^^^ i've answered with references to tex.web in comments, but the question is about luatex. should i just create a provisional answer with the knuth-tex material?
By normative control standarts, spacing between title of a section and one of a subsection (similarly for subsection/subsubsection) must have length 0.8 cm and spacing between any title and a text must have length 1.5 cm.
I know how to set spacing between a title and a text:

I have a master .bib file (call it master.bib) holding >2500 entries. I've changed research directions since it was first created, and I would like to remove the older entries from my master file using a file from 2010 called old.bib.
In essence this is something like the set difference of maste...
I am getting the impression that discretionary hyphens don't work at all in paragraphed footnotes, not really depending on which package is used for the footnotes. I've painfully experienced it with manyfoot and eledmac, being many times forced to use \discretionary to get proper hyphenation. I w...
^^^^ i've determined that, with tex live 2016, if the footnote is not the only thing on the page, discretionary hyphens do work in the footnote. but i'm not sure that's enough to give as an answer. i've left a fairly detailed comment, so if it's suitable for an answer, please let me know and i'll write one.
I am writing thesis, using XeLaTeX with unicode-math, documentclass is modified memoir. I need to typeset equations with binomial coefficient, however I get wrong sizes of parentheses around them.
And unicode-math seems to be ruining the output of \binom, \choose,

Oops, I didn't mean to interrupt an event. I should come back later.
I think this should be closed as unclear, but can't vote to close it because I did so in May. (And then the OP responded, but there's still nothing more on the question, so it is still unclear and ....) Or should it be left for the OP to return to again a few months hence?
I don't want to combine the .bib files in my LaTeX report to produce a single bibliography. Instead, I want to use separate .bib files: the first for the bibliography and the second for the webography.
So using something like this:
