@Johannes_B: Oh my ;-)

08:28
Hello everybody!
Can somebody tell me, which unit pdflatex's main_memory has? Is it bits or bytes or kilobytes or something else?
08:49
@HenriMenke I think it's in words.
@percusse Hm, okay. And what is the size of a word in bytes?
If you have a 32bit OS I would say 4.
N bits = 1 word
@HenriMenke This is old stuff, ask the elders :P
@percusse According to Wikipedia, the x86-64 architecture has a word size of 64 bit.
@HenriMenke But if you installed 32-bit distro, say MikTeX, then 32 bit it is.
@percusse But TeX itself is 8 bit, right? It could well be, that a word is 8 bit for TeX.
@percusse For reference: The Wikipedia word size table
@percusse I'm super confused right now…
08:55
@HenriMenke Yes, this also makes me dizzy but 8-bit TeX is different than PDFTeX. Don't bother too much about old stuff.
If you include a known-size image in your document then a rough calculation with and without would tell you the order of magnitude.
@HenriMenke You can take it from there to see what the approximation is.
@percusse Actually, I wanted to figure out what a reasonable increase of the main_memory is for my system.
@HenriMenke Switching to LuaTeX is the answer :)
It does dynamic allocation of the memory
@HenriMenke What is the show-stopper there?
@percusse With luatex I don't get the same page breaks as with pdftex. Also luatex is unbearably slow.
09:01
@HenriMenke OK. Then 8 million is a number that I used before LuaTeX switch. Or whatever the value just below the absolute upper limit in the .cnf file.
@percusse I just had looked in the cnf-file before. % Memory. Must be less than 8,000,000 total.
@percusse But still thanks for your help.
@HenriMenke Good luck. But consider coming to the dark side :) It's fun and we have lots of fonts :P
@percusse I would really love to use a Unicode engine. At the moment I use xetex for fonts 'n' stuff, but only for performance reasons.
@percusse Still pdftex is the fastest choice.
@percusse And as I have my favourite font Lucida in both Type 1 and OTF I'm flexible in switching engines.
@HenriMenke I see. My favorite font depends on the day so I need a unicode engine :)
weekend puzzle for you
09:24
@percusse The parentheses are not aligned.

3 hours later…
@Johannes_B Yes I saw that
@JosephWright I have to somehow agree with him :-)
@Johannes_B Pass: no experience in this area
@JosephWright Me neither, but the whole submitting system seems to be faulty. I mean forcing the authors to polish the reference section which is useless effort and a waste of time if there ist some post-submittng-processing.
@Johannes_B Well you do get the referees something complaining about such things
12:37
Hi
I have a question about promotion ads, can I ask it here?
@EnthusiasticStudent Good a place as any :-)
6
Q: Why is there no TeX.SX community ad on Academia.SX?

Enthusiastic StudentVisiting the 2015 community ads on Academia.SX, I can see that TeX.SX does not have any advertisements on the site. Why does not TeX.SX have an ad there? I always think that users who have questions about topics like publications, writing styles, journal paper submission, citations, etc. at Acad...

I asked above question on meta
It seems that based on a comment by a diamond moderator
@EnthusiasticStudent Indeed :-)
users of Academia should propose and promote TeX.SX in the Academia's promotion
I want to add TeX.SX ad there, but I don't know which image to put in the ad list
does TeX.SX have any image for its promotions to be used in other sites?
I can not find it
@JosephWright
@EnthusiasticStudent That I know of, there isn't a 'community' advert for TeX-sx anywhere else on the StackExchange network
12:42
TeX.SX -- a zoo of friendly people and answers
@EnthusiasticStudent Good graphics are hard
Will people here like, if I suggest to make an advertisement image for TeX.SX on its meta?
@EnthusiasticStudent sure, go ahead! Promotion was a main intention of several early posts on meta
@EnthusiasticStudent I certainly doubt anyone will object :-)
At least at this end

Q: Which image to use in community promotions ads of other Stack Exchange websites for TeX.SX?

Enthusiastic StudentI want to propose TeX.SX and promote it on the Academia.SX's Community Promotion Ads - 2015 but I do not find any image to put in the advertisement. Is there any image for such purpose which is specifically designed for TeX.SX? [![Tagline to show on mouseover][2]][3]

Please kindly take a look at the question in meta.
Thank you.
12:51
@EnthusiasticStudent One for @PauloCereda ;-)
I really like TeX.SX. I learnt so many of my LaTeX knowledge from this site. I want to help this site grow... Users are kind, perfect, professional LaTeX users.... I love this site.
@JosephWright I will think of something later on. :)
@PauloCereda :-)
13:12
@EnthusiasticStudent As it seems there is no ready-to-use picture, i would ask for contributions/suggestion for a promotional add. A bunch of different answers, community decides by votes who wins.
13:24
@JosephWright I am a little bit confused by pastebin.com/CnYK5dX4 These are the examples (including stuff by domi) from tex.stackexchange.com/questions/209993/…

@JosephWright, @EnthusiasticStudent: ^^
13:41
@JosephWright Maybe @cfr wants to have this resolved? tex.stackexchange.com/revisions/236720/5 cfr, is it so?
14:02
@PauloCereda Funny picture above, but not as complicated as LaTeX documents!
@EnthusiasticStudent Most LaTeX documents shouldn't really be that complicated
3
cfr
cfr
14:51
@Johannes_B That would be great. (I know it is not really rational.)
@cfr I think @Joseph can edit i out, not completely sure, though.
@JosephWright yay!
15:11
What about asking this guy on Stack Exchange to design something for our site. He is the one whom I think designed Academia's web appearance and graphics:
@EnthusiasticStudent There reall is no harm in asking i think. ;-)
People on Graphic Design Stack Exchange may also be interested to help us.
@Johannes_B How should I ask him? Is it possible to ping him to this chat room by @ feature?
@EnthusiasticStudent As he is a mod i think Joseph can get in touch with him. You could as well get to the their chat rom (which i see you just did) and promote our meta question there.
One problem i see is: How to envision something you have no clue about? LaTeX might be a mere word for most of them, having no clue what it is related to, and what are advantages that might be included in the add.
@Johannes_B Yes, I am at Graphic Design chatroom, but it seems that nobody is even answering my hello! :))))
@EnthusiasticStudent Maybe all went for coffee :-)
@EnthusiasticStudent See, somebody greeted you ;-)
15:23
Yes... Fortunately @Johannes_B is not busy with his coffee :)
@EnthusiasticStudent You should have see me startle reading your post thinking: Oh, my coffee :-)
@Johannes_B I asked that moderator to take a look at that chat message by posting a comment to one of his Academia's posts.
Hi. May I ask you to take a look at this chat room message? It is a request about designing an advertisement image for community promotions ads of TeX.SX. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/21041063#21041063Enthusiastic Student 1 min ago

Q: Is this scraper site in violation of StackExchange's attribution requirements?

1 hour later…
16:57
@EnthusiasticStudent Why funny?
OK, no more effort from me, I guess.
17:12
@PauloCereda Just the face of that lion with Stack Exchange logo in his hand... I liked it indeed...
yo'
yo'
Hello, everybody!
@yo' Hi. Has the tart been devoured?
So I get an email from a random student using my dissertation class. Her: "Here's a huge list of things the graduate school complained about my thesis formatting. I've been trying to fix the style file but I'm a beginner." Me: "It's all your document, not the class." A few hours later... Her: "It was my document."
Anyone here interested in some free progress for his/her gold badge for answering tikz questions?
Okay, I guess not free.
"free"
yo'
yo'
@AlanMunn hi, been what?
@yo' 'eaten with great ferocity'
yo'
yo'
17:27
ah this. well, yes, completely :D gonna make another one for my Tuesday seminar I think :-)
@yo' You will spoil them.
@AlanMunn I've gotten several emails like that as well. :-)
@PaulGessler It's that time of the year.
@1010011010 Are you asking for permission to post a "just do it for me" question? :)
@AlanMunn Hmm I suppose that's what it sounds like huh?
It's not that bad, though.... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/238101/…
I just have a feeling the answer is simple but I'm thinking all wrong... that's why I worded it like that.
yo'
yo'
@AlanMunn you have to if you give two seminars in a row and they're boring :D
17:36
@yo' Yes, like flattery, bribery will also get you everywhere. :)
yo'
yo'
@AlanMunn :D
@1010011010 No, it's not at all. Seems like a perfectly good question. I'm sure you'll get some nice answers soon enough.
18:06
Hi guys.
@FaheemMitha Hello
@JosephWright hi
@JosephWright Quack!
@PauloCereda Quack!
@JasperLoy Hello
@JasperLoy Quack!
18:13
I guess Quack is the new Hello.
Is there any news in the TeX world I should know about? I have not been keeping up to date.
@JasperLoy LaTeX 4 was announced on April 1.
6
@AlanMunn OMG!
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda Quackity quack :)
@yo' quackity indeed! :)
18:23
Are there major developments in TikZ and PSTricks?
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda only need to say, I'll miss the session tonight, I really gotta go to bed. I returned home at 2:30 last night and was getting up at 7:30 :(
@yo' You are Tohecz?
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy indeed I am (just with lowercase t, please)
@yo' Why lowercase?
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy because it's always been so?
18:26
@yo' But aren't names supposed to be capitalised?
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy and is it a name?
@yo' I don't know, LOL.
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy well, it's not. My real name is Tom Hejda and tohecz is just a login name and display name I usually use
@yo' I see. Someone was pissed when I wrote Ilya as ilya, LOL.
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy makes sense, Ilya is quite a common given name, after all.
18:29
@JasperLoy Wasn't Illya Kuryakin, was it ;-)
@yo' I tell such people that we use @abc to ping, that's all, not write the name properly in chat.
@JosephWright Nope. By the way, how is your life?
@JasperLoy Fine
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy people know to be sensitive about the capitalization of their name, don't they, @paulo? :D
By the way, is Herbert still 16 years old?
Jez
Jez
hey @JasperLoy
long time no see
18:35
@Jez So why did you come here?
@Jez I do not go to the Eng room anymore, because there are too many assholes there.
Jez
Jez
@JasperLoy well i just know there is something you're interested in. furniture!
@Jez I am not, you are mistaken! Is this a joke?
Jez
Jez
@JasperLoy ah... well, follow my furniture proposal anyway: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/86175/…
@Jez So how is your love life?
Jez
Jez
why do you keep asking?
18:38
@Jez Haha, every time you talk to me, it's about proposals, LOL.
Jez
Jez
:-)
@Jez Well, I am a busybody.
Jez
Jez
i cant believe how few ppl are interested in furniture. we are surrounded by it every day, we use it every day (unless we're living in a cave) - yet people barely notice it
@Jez Same thing, like you always ask me to follow proposals.
@Jez Do you prefer me not to ask anymore?
Jez
Jez
i'll tell you if you follow my proposal
18:44
testing
@Jez Sorry, but I don't follow any, sorry.
Jez
Jez
sorry indeed
You came here just to ask me this? LOL.
I thought you wanted to talk to me...
Jez
Jez
well you cant even be bothered to follow my proposal
Because I am not interested in furniture.
Jez
Jez
so you sit in chairs all the time, use tables and bookcases etc. and you dont care about them?
you should care about stuff you regularly use
18:46
No, I only care about my health now.
Jez
Jez
bad chairs can lead to bad health
And that is not the same as following your health proposal.
Meanwhile, did people see the sad cricket-related news?
I'm sure @DavidCarlisle did
@JosephWright No, did many crickets die?
yo'
yo'
@Jez most of questions about office furniture are on-topic on The Workplace
Jez
Jez
18:48
hmm ok i might try asking it there
@JasperLoy A famous ex-cricketer died, yes
@JosephWright Should it be cricketeer instead?
Jez
Jez
@yo' they don't even have a "furniture" tag
@JasperLoy Nope :-)
18:49
@JosephWright OK. Confused with musketeers, LOL.
@JasperLoy :-)
@JosephWright For me, death is the beginning of new life, since I believe in rebirth.
yo'
yo'
Certainly I wouldn't expect these questions to belong to Furniture.SE anyways. The name suggests it's for people making and trading furniture.
Jez
Jez
huh?
yo'
yo'
18:51
@Jez was that addressed to me?
Jez
Jez
yes
yo'
yo'
@Jez ah ok. Then I probably lost you completely.
I just say: setting up your working environment is on-topic on The Workplace. That's all.
Jez
Jez
yes but i don't see why it would be off-topic on a Furniture.se
yo'
yo'
@Jez it would not, I just point out a significant overlap. Especially with relation to your comment: "so you sit in chairs all the time, use tables and bookcases etc. and you dont care about them?" and the subsequent ones.
Jez
Jez
erm
what does that have to do with overlap?
there's so much lack of overlap that, as i said, The Workplace doesn't even have a tag for furniture
18:57
I think furniture and workplace are very different topics.
So go ahead with your proposal.
Jez
Jez
@yo' oh, look what i just saw on my question: "I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because pricing of things, even things used in the office, is not within the scope of The Workplace. – Jenny D 2 mins ago"
lol
yo'
yo'
@Jez shopping questions are OFF-TOPIC on SE, with the exception of the few sites that carefully accept them.
Jez
Jez
like.... my proposal.
@yo' No need for bold, LOL.
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy sorry, I had to say a similar thing to someone else recently. I get louder and louder when I have to repeat things :D
Jez
Jez
19:03
so then @JasperLoy... what do you sit on, if not a chair?
@Jez @xxx... does not ping FYI.
Jez
Jez
oh well
@Jez I do sit in a chair, but I just do not want to follow any proposal, I am sorry.
Jez
Jez
so you do commit to them?
@Jez No, and in fact, I might delete my accounts again very soon...
Jez
Jez
19:05
ah yeah i forgot you deleted them
@Jez I am sorry I cannot help you.
Jez
Jez
what's the point in deleting and recreating your accounts
It's a bad habit of mine.
It might be related to my mental illness.
I see @PauloCereda is back!
@JasperLoy yo!
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda yo! @Jasper
19:10
@PauloCereda How is your life?
@yo' yo'! :)
@JasperLoy In a hurry. :)
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda :)
@yo' Yo! How is your life?
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy busy and well :)
I think I should come to this room from now.
yo'
yo'
19:13
@JasperLoy we're friendly (no guarantee tho :D )
Jez
Jez
anyone else interested in furniture?
yo'
yo'
@Jasper btw, you said something about an illness (pardon my curiosity)...?
@Jez Is this any duck-shaped furniture?
Jez
Jez
@PauloCereda yeah, sure.
yo'
yo'
@PauloCereda dog house duck house dog house duck house everywhere
19:15
@Jez ooh :)
@yo' I have severe OCD and PTSD. I have not worked for 8 years. Right now, I am trying to get well and get on with life, but that may never happen. I will keep trying, but I don't know what will happen to me. I am living with my mum who takes care of me. This I told @JosephWright and @PauloCereda yesterday. Now you know too.
yo'
yo'
@JasperLoy well, thanks for the openness, and good luck!
Jez
Jez
@PauloCereda so, wanna follow the proposal then?
maybe propose a duck furniture question or two?
@Jez I'm quite stupid furniture-wise, so I'm not sure if I should to follow the proposal. :) It's something along the lines of DIY?
Jez
Jez
19:21
yes, but not close enough to DIY to fit in there. my question there got closed as off-topic.
anyway what better way to educate yourself on furniture than to be in the furniture Q&A?
@ChristianHupfer Nice shirt.
@ChristianHupfer Hallo!
@JasperLoy: Irony? ;-)
@PauloCereda: Das böse Ente ;-)
@ChristianHupfer No, I don't have much iron, LOL.
@PauloCereda I will be installing Debian 8 on Apr 25.
19:32
@JasperLoy Cool. :)
@ChristianHupfer Quack! :)
@PauloCereda I now use the MATE desktop.
@JasperLoy I'm still using Gnome 3.
@PauloCereda But if Debian 8 does not come with a live MATE DVD, I might go back to GNOME. I am using Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS now.
I will never ever use Fedora again.
@JasperLoy No?
Firstly, I do not like yum.
apt is a much better package manager.
19:36
@JasperLoy: @PauloCereda is an avid Fedora Afficionado... don't say such words in here ;-)
@ChristianHupfer Yes, I am aware of that!
@JosephWright What do you use now?
@PauloCereda: Blasphemy ;-)
@JasperLoy Quite interesting: I find the exacty opposite. :P
Fedora is now changing to dnf. :)
@PauloCereda Thanks for telling me. Any difference between yum and dnf?
@JasperLoy On my own machine I have OS X with Win7/10 and Ubuntu as VMs
19:38
@JosephWright Wow, very rich. =)
@JasperLoy They share almost the same commands, but to the extent of my usage, dnf is insanely faster.
@PauloCereda Is there a command now to remove unneeded dependencies when you remove a package?
@JasperLoy There always was. :) yum/dnf remove package will also remove unneded dependencies from package. :)
@PauloCereda I think you misunderstand me, so let me explain...
@JasperLoy Not really: a good laptop would cost a similar amount from any supplier as Apple give a hefty academic discount
19:41
@JosephWright In Brazil, Apple discount is very, very, very small.
@PauloCereda I think it's 15 or 20% here (would have to check)
@PauloCereda Say X depends on A, B and C. And nothing else depends on A, B and C. Currently, yum remove X does not remove A, B and C. It only removes X. However, if Y depends on X, it will remove Y, of course.
@JasperLoy If A, B or C is not a dependency on any other package, removing X will remove them as well. :)
@JosephWright You are kidding me! Apple's discount is R$ 50 ~ R$ 100 (fixed). For a R$ 8000 computer. :(
@PauloCereda Then this is something new, or you have changed the default settings, I am very sure of that.
@JasperLoy I actually don't know what do say, that was yum as I know it. :)
19:44
@PauloCereda Maybe you made a mistake? Never mind. =)
@PauloCereda No, seriously: I probably wouldn't buy one otherwise
@JasperLoy I never maek mistaeks.
:)
@PauloCereda OK, I am very sure because I tested yum extensively. =) But like I said, nvm. =)
@JosephWright If I could get 20% on a R$ 8k Macbook, that would be something!
@JasperLoy <3
Hallo!
19:47
@PauloCereda This blog post explains what I am trying to say.
@Iplodman Hey!
@PauloCereda squeaks in reply
I'm trying to typeset the first chapter of my novel ;P
Thought I'd get LaTeX stuff out of the way first.
@JasperLoy I'm sorry, I still don't follow. The post is also from 2010, so bear in mind that that reference is quite outdated. :)
@PauloCereda OK, nvm <3
@JasperLoy <3
19:50
I have not touched Fedora for over a year.
@JasperLoy The Linux distro?
@Iplodman Yes.
Is it worth transitioning from Windows, do you think?
I've been toying with the idea c:
To update everyone, there is now a new distro called Ubuntu MATE, and Linux Mint will have a new edition based on Debian instead of Ubuntu called LMDE.
@Iplodman No, Windows is the best OS.
@JasperLoy Ah, good ;P
19:54
@Iplodman And Microsoft Office is the best office suite.
Alert alert.... two naughy words: Microsoft Office
I have many problems with Linux and LibreOffice.
Many printers do not work.
Many video files do not play.
The equation editor is hard to use.
So, if you have some money, go for MICROSOFT
@JasperLoy: Wtf is an equation editor? ;-)
@ChristianHupfer Oh, if that was not a joke, that is the thing that allows you to type math in Word. It works pretty well actually. For high school math, it is sufficient. No need for LaTeX!
@JasperLoy I downloaded a portable version, and pretty much hated the UI. Not bad for a free program though ;P
19:57
@ChristianHupfer Sorry but I still find LaTeX hard to use, I am a novice. =)
