In FB messenger or in Whatsapp, there's a feature to reply to our own previous msgs. I feeling the necessity of that feature in SE chat rooms! Is there any way to do that now? or any chance of getting that feature? Where should I talk about these type of feature request?

7:24 AM
@DavidCarlisle or you could simply cheat (@raf)

@DavidCarlisle how did you do it?

@UlrikeFischer just use colon followed by the message id

@UlrikeFischer like this?

@raf the answer to where to report is to open a question at the network meta tagged
@DavidCarlisle yes

@DavidCarlisle the snail method to speak to myself

7:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle Breakfast
@UlrikeFischer ^ that should confuse @PauloCereda when he turns up if he follows the "reply" chain....

@DavidCarlisle an new method to catch a duck? lead it into a circle?

8:04 AM
@DavidCarlisle oh no
@DavidCarlisle ooh

@PauloCereda just like being in vim

@DavidCarlisle :w ooh

raf
@DavidCarlisle wow, Thanks!

Where can I find a list of things you can put at the beginning of your .tex files like % !TEX program = lualatex. I would google it but I don't know what it's called :p

@Plergux they are just comments, so you can put anything. Different systems may read different comments, eg at learnlatex.org you can use these but we have an answer on site about texshop I thik. I'll find

8:17 AM
@Plergux They are called and depend on your editor.

46
A: When and why should I use % !TEX TS-program and % !TEX encoding?

doncherryEditors that understand % ! TeX directives E P R S TeXShop x x x x TeXStudio x x x x TextMate ? x x ? TeXworks x x x x SublimeText o x x x Atom o x x o Vim (vimtex) o x x o Overleaf ? x ? ? | | | | x = yes | | | Spellcheck...

@DavidCarlisle Thanks!

@AndréC tabular is pure LaTeX, so within LaTeX documentation and books, such as the reference manual andf texdoc PDF LaTeX reference 8.23.

raf
@DavidCarlisle Instead of $(+ - - -)$, I tried $(+ - {-} -)$. But still not giving me proper output in mathjax.

@MarcelKrüger Ah, ok. So maybe I was just lucky that the ones I've found and use on the one hand in TeXworks on MikTeX on Windows and on the other hand on Atom on TeXLive on Manjaro all work XD

8:28 AM
@raf + - {-} that is a mathord + (as it is first in a list) followed by a mathbin - (as it is between two mathord) followed by a mathord - (as it is in {})so the first - gets infix binary operator spacing try {+}{-}{-}{-}

raf
@DavidCarlisle oh okay. Thank you. :)

@raf I think your previous example was $---$ where $-{-}-$ makes all three have mathord as the outer two are mathord already as they are at the ends of the list.

raf
@DavidCarlisle so, $+{-}{-}-$ produces the same as ${+}{-}{-}{-}$, right?

@raf in tex yes, I assume mathjax gets that right but haven't checked or $+{--}-$ if you want minimal {}

raf
@DavidCarlisle okay, I am going with the minimal one, thanks.

raf
8:54 AM
@DavidCarlisle $+{--}-$ is becoming +-- unless I put a space between them as $+{- -}-$. :\

@raf mathjax is wrong then spaces should always be ignored in math mode

@StefanKottwitz Isn't the array package also part of LaTeX? I can compile with the w{}{} specifier without having to declare it in the preamble. Unless it is loaded by another package?

@AndréC array is part of the required tools bundle in the core latex release (as are longtable, dcolumn and tabularx) but you have to load them explicitly to use them)

raf
@DavidCarlisle I am not facing this issue in my personal blogger site where I have set up the latest mathjax recently. But it's appearing in a Wordpress blog, so I am not sure if it's a Wordpress issue or mathjax config issue on that site.

@raf ah the blog markdown may be turning -- into an en-dash before mathjax sees it. These things happen when you stack 6 different pre-processors over the text stream:-)

raf
9:13 AM
@DavidCarlisle ohho, I see. Yes, you are right. In the Wordpress editor, -- is converting to en/em dash. :|

@DavidCarlisle So it's the numprint package that loads it itself as I manage to compile this:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage[np]{numprint}
\begin{document}
\pagestyle{empty}

\renewcommand {\arraystretch }{1.5}

\begin{tabular}{|l|*{3}{w{c}{10mm}|}}
\cline{1-4}
longueur initiale & \numprint[cm]{3} & \numprint[cm]{4} & \numprint[cm]{5}\\
\cline{1-4}
longueur agrandie & & \numprint[cm]{4.8} & \\
\cline{1-4}
\end{tabular}
\end{document}

@AndréC I haven't used that package but its first three lines are:
\NeedsTeXFormat{LaTeX2e}
\ProvidesPackage{numprint}
 [2012/08/20 v1.39 Print numbers (HH)]
\RequirePackage{array}
so yes it loads array

@DavidCarlisle It's one of the packages I took ideas from for siunitx

9:29 AM
@JosephWright oh, I though you just copied dcolumn !
2

@JosephWright ooh
@DavidCarlisle ooh

@JosephWright I have started to learn and use numprint which is more than enough to write common units like lengths, masses and litres. All my old handouts are written with it. As egreg advises to use siunitx, I use it in new documents.

10:08 AM
Hi all, is there a way when filling a tabular column to know the current column width? Is for helping here: tex.stackexchange.com/a/593122/38080

@Rmano not in one pass
@Rmano the solution with \hfill is to do what @UlrikeFischer says: Read the documentation:-) (colortbl doc)

@DavidCarlisle Ah, yes, clear
@DavidCarlisle I use to write documentation, not read it. But I'll oblige ;-) (Thanks)

@Rmano er actually you may need to read the documentation that I would have written had I documented this feature
@Rmano texdoc colortbl para at top of page 10, especially the last sentence.

@DavidCarlisle Tough, so. ;-)

@Rmano I thought I had mentioned that in the first, user-documentation, part but apparently not. It sems there I stuck to demonstrating tasteful subtle table typography.

10:25 AM
@DavidCarlisle Nice --- I was exploring it but missed the final \mbox{}...

@Rmano tabular does an \unskip at the end of the cell....

@DavidCarlisle insider info ;-)

@Rmano when people use r they apparently want the space before & ignored:-)

10:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle peopleshouldsimplynotusespace.

11:09 AM
@UlrikeFischer showing your national stereotyping again.

1 hour later…
12:32 PM
Anyone around running Big Sur? Has the path helper stuff changed from Mojave?

1:02 PM
@AlanMunn I have Big Sur
@AlanMunn What needs to be tested?

@JosephWright I need to tell someone who knows nothing how to add a local bin folder to their path. They have MacTeX, so I know that /etc/paths.d should exist. For reasons I don't understand sudo echo "~/bin" > /etc/paths.d/mypath doesn't work, but echo "~/bin" | sudo tee /etc/paths.d/mypath did. Can you check if you can add an arbitrary folder to your path this way in Big Sur? Since I'm sure you have a ~/bin try adding any other folder you have.

@AlanMunn Added something but it's not showing: wonder if I need to log out and in again

@JosephWright You should just need to open a new Terminal tab or window.

@AlanMunn Ah: works but I need the full path, ~ doesn't work

@JosephWright Oh really. Ok that's very helpful to know. Thanks!

1:36 PM
@JosephWright Can you reopen this. tex.stackexchange.com/q/592684/2693 The OP has edited and I have an answer.

@AlanMunn Done

@JosephWright Thanks

@UlrikeFischer enjoying having users?

@DavidCarlisle ?

2:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle ?

@DavidCarlisle ?

@DavidCarlisle ‽

@UlrikeFischer tagpdf issues:-)

@PhelypeOleinik in "then the definition for \foo is immediately changed to:" the "immediately" should be changed.

2:19 PM
@UlrikeFischer Oops, forgot that bit. Thanks!

@DavidCarlisle ah. Yes it is a bit surprising, but the really surprising thing is that they don't seem to find real bugs or real problems.

@UlrikeFischer ❔

@UlrikeFischer I'm now wondering if it should error if the command does not exist...

@DavidCarlisle ❕

@UlrikeFischer I think not because otherwise we're back to the \@ifpackageloaded hell. I'll change that after lunch

2:26 PM
@PauloCereda that was my text ;-) ❕
@PhelypeOleinik ?

@UlrikeFischer ooh 🤍

@UlrikeFischer 𝔻𝕀ℕℕ𝔼ℝ

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{ltcmdhooks}
\AddToHook{cmd/notdefined/after}{Error}
\begin{document}
\end{document}
@UlrikeFischer This errors with “can't have hooks because the command is not defined” ^^

@DavidCarlisle 🇴‌ 🇭‌ 🇳‌ 🇴‌

@PhelypeOleinik ? Is that new?

2:31 PM
@UlrikeFischer The error? No. It's been there since the first versions

@PhelypeOleinik I'm lost. Why does it happen exactly?

3:00 PM
@JosephWright Is this is a bug or am I missing something here?
\documentclass{article}

\begin{document}
\ExplSyntaxOn
\prop_put:Nnn\l_tmpa_tl{a}{b}
\prop_put:Nnn\l_tmpa_tl{c}{d}

\cs_new:Npn \my_test:nn #1 #2 {(#1)--(#2)!}
\prop_map_tokens:Nn \l_tmpa_tl{ \my_test:nn }

\ExplSyntaxOff
\end{document}
Why is ab not passed through my function?

@UlrikeFischer You've not added to the right data type

@JosephWright oh damn ;-)

@UlrikeFischer An empty prop isn't the same as an empty tl: you need \l_tmpa_prop here

@JosephWright thanks. now it behaves as expected ...

1 hour later…
@samcarter_looks_forward_TUG'21 you must be so envious of the UK having a national news service that keeps us informed of all the important stuff.

@DavidCarlisle German newspaper cover this as well, but as curtsey to everybody who is not fluent in all languages like you, I opted to post the English version . Here the version for you spiegel.de/wirtschaft/service/…

@AlanMunn ooh

@AlanMunn Since you're around: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/593184 Email to Dick Koch is way to go there?

4:46 PM
@TorbjørnT. Yes, I guess. By grammar I guess they mean syntax highlighting support/command completion?
@TorbjørnT. But knowing Dick and how long he's been using TeX he's not likely to think it's a priority. Creating a command completion file for expl3 syntax would certainly be something that could be done (there's a separate one in TeXShop for ConTeXt, for example). But that's something that people who know expl3 well could contribute to, rather than asking the TeXShop people to produce it themselves, IMO.

5:23 PM
siunitx v3 is feature complete: finishing a few tasks for beta-1
5

@JosephWright is that a ctan release or from gh?

@DavidCarlisle It will be GH/blog for the beta
@DavidCarlisle I need to write a post: probably tomorrow - a few rough edges outstanding

@JosephWright there is a missing \end{macrocode} in siunitx.dtx line 211 (I saw that yesterday)

1 hour later…
@HenriMenke nice number

@DavidCarlisle It's already gone, though :(

@yo' vvv
$ grep booboos /home/texlive-source/texk/web2c/tex.web
 ("Such booboos are generally harmless, so keep going."); error;

yo'
@DavidCarlisle Ah thanks!

7:15 PM
@HenriMenke Gotta work on those commas though. :)
@HenriMenke Did you ever see the meme of you?

@HenriMenke Hi! I am really considering about replacing homebrew by nix in my Mac

7:32 PM
@AlanMunn No, I don't think so.
@PauloCereda Do you have an M1 Mac? If yes, don't do it. Nix doesn't support Apple Silicon yet and there are a few issues with bootstrapping.

Is there a "C" that matches the style of the "T" produced by \intercal?

@PeterGrill no
@PauloCereda te culpo
@PeterGrill it's not even clear whether it is a T:
19
A: What is the meaning of the name of the \intercal symbol?

David CarlisleThe earliest mention I can find is the SGML standard (1986) which lists intcal in its additional mathematical symbols list under "binary and large operators" the definition being (in full) <!ENTITY intcal SDATA "[intcal]"--/intercal B: intercal--> which means the the entity ⊺ could be u...

@HenriMenke the guy on the left is actually called Henri Menke. I couldn't resist.

@AlanMunn Well probably because the guy on the left is actually me.
@AlanMunn Long time ago. We got hired for a show fight. Not a real tournament.

@HenriMenke but that ruins it, what's the point of a true meme!

7:47 PM
@HenriMenke Wow! We had no idea!

@AlanMunn There is also a video recording of the fight on YouTube in case you want to see me get hit in the face: youtube.com/watch?v=I9wlu_kvoAw

@HenriMenke The hidden talents of our community!

@AlanMunn you'll probably be more polite about tikz in future:-)

@DavidCarlisle Well I have swords.

yo'
@HenriMenke wow!

8:06 PM
@AlanMunn -- aaarrrrgggghhhhhhh! (His daughter Diane worked for the AMS for several years in a department that worked with mine. Before TeX. But she would have been really great at it.)

@DavidCarlisle All meme is truth. Meme is life.

@barbarabeeton Having read many a draft of his papers over the year, interest in typography did not come from Dad. :)

8:41 PM
@DavidCarlisle Thanks. Yeah, saw that post just before asking.

@PeterGrill you can use a sans serif C and mess around with \resizebox and \raisebox to get something, it might match better if you do the same with T rather than use intercal directly.

9:20 PM
@HenriMenke WOW

@JosephWright the first test didn't error ;-) Package: siunitx 2021-04-16 v3.0.0-beta

9:49 PM
@UlrikeFischer I'm just writing up a blog post
@UlrikeFischer There are lots of tests, so I'd hope it works

@JosephWright ages page not found

@PhelypeOleinik I know - fixing it now
@PhelypeOleinik Fixed

@JosephWright slot -> slow

@UlrikeFischer On it
@UlrikeFischer Should all be sorted

10:04 PM
@JosephWright you should perhaps mention what the old names for unit and qty are.

@UlrikeFischer OK

10:36 PM
@JosephWright complex numbers dedicated not decided (I assume)
