5:31 AM
Good morning guys! What's up?

5:58 AM
@manucpp Good afternoon!

6:16 AM
@CarLaTeX Good morning! btw, what time is it where you are?

6:53 AM
@DavidCarlisle Quack U+1F986 ;)

@JosephWright honk

@DavidCarlisle :)

@manucpp 9:04 a.m.

7:52 AM
I have a question regarding TikZ: By default stuff is printed in order of the commands given. Is it possible to draw something which is always in background even if called last?

@Skillmon Maybe you look for the backgrounds library? (see this question)

8:22 AM
Thank you very much @mickep.

@DavidCarlisle Seent he TL list thread about multiple dots in graphic names?

8:39 AM
@JosephWright I can confirm what you are saying: it didn't work in older TL either. I also tried the multidot option of grffile and it worked fine. But during this tests I noticed warnings when compiling with xelatex:
Package grffile Warning: \Gread@QTm of xetex.def not found on input line 259.

Package grffile Warning: Unsupported \Gread@eps not patched on input line 303.

@UlrikeFischer Yes, that's my 'we might need to alter grffile' comment

8:51 AM
@UlrikeFischer Oh, I see: that's to do with the fact that we changed them, but I added support for spaces in names anyway so the patch is no longer needed

@JosephWright I could add an issue to the oberdiek tracker, then the oberdiek support team could take over ;-)
@DavidCarlisle ^^^^what do you think?

9:41 AM
@UlrikeFischer good plan, especially the east anglian part of that support team would be happy to pick that up
@JosephWright just saw that but in a meeting all morning, juts on coffee break now:-) can't look until the weekend probably

@DavidCarlisle Cool
@DavidCarlisle I'm interviewing all day

10:30 AM
@JosephWright Goooood niiiiiiiiight ding-a-ling-ding-ding

11:16 AM
Thankfully I avoided SP today. The city's services are mostly on strike today.

yo'
@UlrikeFischer don't they wear the Z particles?
@PauloCereda oh!

@yo' Strikes are not common, but once in a while they happen. And in case of SP, the city almost literally stops!

yo'
@PauloCereda I know that from France, just here it's the other way around: the city can't stop, so it moves anyway, just in a much more crazy way

@yo' ooh :)

11:48 AM
@yo' Do they? Are they acquaintances of @DavidCarlisle?

@UlrikeFischer ooh

yo'
@UlrikeFischer I think we all are polygamous if Z particles count :-)

Zorro
Google never ceases to amaze me.

yo'
@PauloCereda Then be happy you are in a country where Google works

@yo' oh :(

12:11 PM
@PauloCereda google only finds such web pages. I'm more a amazed that someone creates them. Did you saw the duck show tv? I liked the crime scene ;-)

@UlrikeFischer ooh a TV show? I haven't seen it

12:55 PM
Hey @UlrikeFischer. May I have a conversation here regarding tex.stackexchange.com/questions/377338/…

1:19 PM
@manucpp Yes, but I don't have much time currently.

@UlrikeFischer oh ok... later than. I will leave a comment on that question.

2 hours later…
3:21 PM
@DavidCarlisle A tiny bit annoyed, perhaps?

3:37 PM
@JosephWright :-)

@AlanMunn Didn't say I was going to compile MacTeX from source
@DavidCarlisle Take that as a 'yes'

@JosephWright Didn't say I was wishing you good luck. :)

@AlanMunn True

Meanwhile, more biscuits.

3:58 PM
@JosephWright I wasn't sure if you were asking if I was annoyed or if Randall Munroe was

@egreg If older binaries are being compiled, it's a shame that they aren't able to be installed with MacTeX with the proviso that the older machines won't install any of the GUI programs. But I can understand the decision to streamline the work. And very few people are running Lion I suspect.

@AlanMunn The problem, as I can see it, is the Installer itself.

@egreg Yes, I suspected that might be the issue.
@egreg I was looking to package some scripts for a student, but the old package maker doesn't even exist any more in XCode. Everything is oriented towards being installed through the App Store.
@egreg I finally gave up and just installed the stuff by hand on her machine.

4:58 PM
@ChristianHupfer :D

@Johannes_B Great template.

@TeXnician Merci beaucoup :-)

@Johannes_B Gracias!

@PauloCereda seja bem-vindo

@DavidCarlisle Yes, saw that
@DavidCarlisle Won't be wrong for long ;)

... and after an afternoon spent aligning objects in a PowerPoint presentation, let me waste some time on TeX.SE!
@PauloCereda <3

@Johannes_B ooh

@TeXnician Wow!

@CarLaTeX <3

5:31 PM
@CarLaTeX Why is it wow that I like Johannes' template?

@TeXnician No, for your reputation!

@CarLaTeX Oh well, thanks. Only about 2200 and I got you ;)

@CarLaTeX: the most amazing thing about that duck photo is that no one noticed this:
Sacred bleu!
There's a cheese too

@TeXnician You'll get me soon, I've been here for more than a year, you for only few months!
@PauloCereda A French painter duck eating cheese LOL

@CarLaTeX Someday I will have him in my collection. :)

5:39 PM
@CarLaTeX Right, but let's wait. Maybe you'll become something egreg-like eating all rep points before one can get them ;)

@PauloCereda You must! LOL

@TeXnician I think I won't become @egreg-like even in 100 years LOL
@PauloCereda I'm on the bus, I can't watch it now!

@CarLaTeX ooh

@CarLaTeX Only about 6000 rep per year and you would have him (provided egreg stops answering).

5:45 PM
“If your code needs comments, consider refactoring it so it doesn’t.” - Kevlin Henney
@DavidCarlisle ^^ this sounds suspiciously like you. :)

@PauloCereda He didn't know about percent signs at line ends! All those spurious spaces...

@egreg ah the memories ^^ :)

@PauloCereda I'm missing @DavidCarlisle's famous typos!

6:03 PM
@CarLaTeX Please, would you consider to make a video with Professore van Duck for Mönchengladbach as @paulocereda did? https://unsertraum2024.de/? It would be so much fun ;-)))). I can offer a script (you can change it or translate it to italian):
"I am Professore Paulinho van Duck. I live and work in Milan at Carla's place. I'm not really interested in football, but I want to visit Mönchengladbach. They have a herd of bronze donkeys and a wonderful little zoo with lots of ducks. I'd love to meet all of them. If Mönchengladbach should become venue of the Euro 2024, may be Carla will go the

YEEEEEEEEEEES

@PauloCereda YEESS poke her too ;-)

@UlrikeFischer I'll try but I'm a bit clumsy in doing videos :$

@CarLaTeX That would be great. And your slide shows were so good, I'm sure you will make a neat one. @PauloCereda they added a button to share the videos (on the top beside the title). So now it is easier to share them.

@UlrikeFischer ooh! :)
@UlrikeFischer: I wonder if the townpeople think I am wacky. :)

6:16 PM
@PauloCereda This one says that we have to eat and drink (and a place to sleep) in Mönchengladbach: youtube.com/watch?v=NmGBLzfLgFI

@UlrikeFischer ooh

6:55 PM
@Johannes_B The usual template master piecer rubbish, I assume?

@ChristianHupfer No, great stuff :-)

@Johannes_B I won't look

@UlrikeFischer, @barbarabeeton As the großes Eszett is now in official spelling, I wonder if there is a better name for this variant in my expandable case changer than de-alt ...

@JosephWright -- what's the name for the lowercase form? and how are, say, the eth and thorn named, upper- and lowercase? that could be a model.

Das Vatereszett <3
@Johannes, @ChristianHupfer, @TeXnician, @samcarter, @UlrikeFischer: ^^ please forgive me

7:06 PM
@PauloCereda ???

@ChristianHupfer My take on how to call an uppercase Eszett. :)

@PauloCereda There's too much focus on this letter ;-)

@barbarabeeton Ah, I don't mean the char itself ;)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@PauloCereda I've have not met a situation where I would have needed an uppercase ß yet

7:09 PM
@ChristianHupfer You can use \Beta for that. :D

@barbarabeeton For the case changer, I've set up to accept a language argument, which will allow for 'non-standard' changes but could also be set because of other things. So \tl_upper_case:nn { de } { Straße } should presumably be the same as \tl_upper_case:n { Straße }. So the 'use the großes Eszett version has a different name, which is currently de-alt ('alternative'). Seems a bit weak ...

@PauloCereda I read that starred chat line of you already. I am prepared for not being annoyed :-P

@ChristianHupfer <3

@PauloCereda Reading your call for papers ...

@ChristianHupfer -- unfortunately, we did yesterday. (gau{\ss}stra{\ss}e) in an author address that needs to be set in small caps. three s's in a row looks pretty awful, but it is apparently the historically correct rendering. sigh.

7:11 PM
@PauloCereda Planning to try out a regex talk at UK-TUG in the autumn, plus will update the l3build one

@JosephWright oh :)
@JosephWright Awesome!

@JosephWright -- "de nova". (that's not meant seriously. i'll keep thinking.)

@barbarabeeton Maybe 'alt' is OK: it is a stylistic alternative ...

@PauloCereda There were two Peanuts walking down der STRAßE ;-)

@ChristianHupfer LOL

7:14 PM
@barbarabeeton I'm imagining long-term we might expect language to be 'passed around' with text, so it's quite possible that the language might be a case-changing no-op

@barbarabeeton That's annoying misuse of typography, requiring addresses to be set in small caps then ;-)

@PauloCereda I will be annoying and want to do live demos ...

@PauloCereda one was aßaulted one ;-)

@ChristianHupfer German snakes go hißßßßßßßßßßßßßß
@JosephWright ooh

@ChristianHupfer /groan

7:16 PM
@barbarabeeton You could do Gauszstraße. </hiding>

@Johannes_B Sneaky

@JosephWright so I suppose I should look through the other ho-tex issues and contenplatd making a new release

@DavidCarlisle It's only a warning but I guess

@ChristianHupfer FUẞBALL

@Johannes_B For some period Gausz was the correct spelling of Gauß...

7:17 PM
@JosephWright But allowed.

@DavidCarlisle Heiko should learn about Git submodules ... (was looking as it might be handy longer-term with various L3 things)

@JosephWright not sure he has access to the git repo:-)

@Johannes_B Oh, sure: ß is 'interesting' in that regard
@DavidCarlisle :)

@Johannes_B Call me ẞtefan
5

@ChristianHupfer -- can't help it. it's the house style, and has been since at least 1900. (just checked a paper copy of a 1900 journal. there are older ones, but not as easy to put my hands on.)

7:18 PM
@JosephWright I had a furious discussion with friends about UPPERCASE. They will never forget why there should be ẞ.

@Johannes_B NEIN UPPERCASE

@PauloCereda Sí

@barbarabeeton Time for a revolution then ;-)

@Johannes_B -- actually, there's some logic to that, so i won't throw anything.

@Johannes_B do we have ẞ with various accents?

7:20 PM
@StefanKottwitz poliglot penguin

@barbarabeeton I had a drivers learning handbook in my hands the other day. About 1920? Crazy

@Johannes_B ooh Volkswagen, das Auto.

@StefanKottwitz Guess not. Who needs accents?
:-)

@ChristianHupfer -- not by me. too close to retirement, and i want to go on my own terms. but i may incite the new kids on the block.

@PauloCereda VW Gol? A car i haven't seen before?

7:22 PM
@Johannes_B Come next year and you will see lots!

@Johannes_B -- wouldn't tell you much useful about current engine maintenance. maybe how to patch a tyre.

ẞ̊̊̊̊̊̊̊̊̊̊

@barbarabeeton It was very interesting though. We don't have this road signs anymore. And nobody needs to know what the inner parts of the car really do. Drive, get aa license. Nothing more.

@Johannes_B accents are good

Parking is also important.

7:24 PM
oh, nasty word, nasty word! while i'm reading this, i get a banner message on my workstation that the principal linux box i've been doing things on all day is "unavailable"! hope they didn't lose any of my updates in the crash.

@PauloCereda I still look for an expandable car.

@PauloCereda Too expensive :-(
@DavidCarlisle Just the right ones :-)

@StefanKottwitz Honda Fit. :)

@DavidCarlisle -- is that supposed to be a candle to light, either in penance or for celebration?

@Johannes_B We all need this:

7:26 PM
@PauloCereda Designed with TikZ fit library around tikzpeople nodes?

@StefanKottwitz That's Opel/Chevrolet Spin.

:38487863 beta with distorted satans s horns?

@StefanKottwitz ^^

7:27 PM
@Johannes_B Yes...

You guys could add a inverted cedilla on top of this Beta thingy. :)

@Johannes_B -- hmmm. well, when i drove across the country umpteen years ago in a two-cycle, three-cylinder saab, i did need to know how to rejet the carburetor for every 4000 ft rise in elevation. now i need to know how to call a flatbed to deliver my chariot to a mechanic.

@ChristianHupfer Can i get a cup of coffee instead?

@DavidCarlisle -- needs a hinge in the middle.

@barbarabeeton I have troube finding the parking brake on new cars.

7:28 PM
@DavidCarlisle I guess my car has to expand vertically (\vspace*{\fill}) seen the parking situation here in Hamburg.

@PauloCereda That discriminating. It should be Mothereszett.

@PauloCereda Eh... no ;-)

@UlrikeFischer oh no, apologies. :)

Is there a vertical stretch limo?

7:29 PM
@barbarabeeton ^^

@DavidCarlisle we have some of them here, it's spooky

@Johannes_B -- just find an old railroad tie, and shove it in front or back of the wheels, whichever is more appropriate for the slope. or just don't park on hills.

@DavidCarlisle A typical German bus in cities

@PauloCereda How much bhp does a VW Gol have?

@StefanKottwitz -- ever seen a tour bus stopped/stuck because it was too tall for a tunnel?

7:31 PM
@barbarabeeton I also have trouble finding the lane assistent or parking assistent. I just do what i would do with a normal car.

The Volkswagen Gol is a subcompact car that has been manufactured by Volkswagen do Brasil since 1980 as Volkswagen's entry-level car in the Latin American market—where it succeeded the Volkswagen Type 1 (Fusca) and the VW Brasilia. Several variants of the Gol were marketed in North America as the Volkswagen Fox from 1987 to 1993. The Gol has been produced in several versions, such as three- and five-door hatchbacks, four-door sedans (the Volkswagen Voyage), three- and five-door station wagons (the Volkswagen Parati), and two-door coupé utilities (the Volkswagen Saveiro). The Gol was the best-selling...

@Johannes_B I don't know, people here go with the cilynder volume. Gols go from 1.0 to 1.8, I guess.

@ChristianHupfer there are none in Oxford, I seem to remember they tried it but it didn't work:-)

@barbarabeeton This reminds me of this: 11foot8.com

@DavidCarlisle "Didn't work" is no precise description ;-)

7:33 PM
@DavidCarlisle Dumpster stuff :-(

@barbarabeeton Yes, MTU issues with tunnels (the additional IP packet overhead)

@Johannes_B -- never actually heard of a "lane assistant". (i learned how to parallel park from an article in a math journal. that wasn't part of the driver training in massachusetts when i got my license.)

@barbarabeeton Driving, beeing tired, leaving the land and the car goes crazy (either beeping or vibrating the steering wheel).
@barbarabeeton Driving normally through short country bends with the occasional drift to the side the system is just annoying.

@AlanMunn -- how jolly! some drivers need to learn to read.

7:36 PM
@barbarabeeton It's more that just reading, too, there's a flashing light that comes on if you're over height an everything, but people persist or don't notice.

@Johannes_B -- does sound annoying. well, i've been in situations where i had no choice but to do something unorthodox, just to get through. but sometimes, the warning in one's own car would likely be drowned out by the sound of the horns of the surrounding cars.

@barbarabeeton HUP HUP HUP :-)

@Johannes_B CUIDADO, LLAMAS

translation: Honk Honk Honk

@ChristianHupfer ^^

7:39 PM
No uppercase :)

And just in case everyone thinks this is the crazy Americans, version française.

@barbarabeeton I hope this is photoshop.

@AlanMunn -- i don't think so. google for "bridge out sharp edges".

7:45 PM
@PauloCereda Beret funny.

@AlanMunn :D

@AlanMunn -- while you're here, i'll jump the gun and wish you happy canada day.

@barbarabeeton Thanks. :)

@AlanMunn Happy Canada day too from me!

@PauloCereda @barbarabeeton It's a big year this year the sesquicentennial, although admittedly there is a certain difficulty with that kind anniversary.
@PauloCereda Are you going to adopt a duck?

7:55 PM
@AlanMunn Too expensive, bronze starts at $100!

@barbarabeeton Still not convinced about the sign. All the google references are pretty circular.
@PauloCereda All of these papers need colons in the titles, otherwise they'll never get published.

@AlanMunn -- take a look at the picture gallery. if someone photoshopped it, they sure did work hard. not all are identical.
@AlanMunn -- but that's a job for the copyeditor (in some disciplines).

@barbarabeeton I was referring more to this phenomenon.

8:13 PM
@AlanMunn -- fascinating! i'm not sure it applies in quite the same way in math, but i could be mistaken. (although actual math in titles is discouraged, both colon and exclamation mark have distinct math meanings, so could throw off the statistics.) i think i'll send this to the math reviews editor (who used to be an acquisitions editor in the providence office), and ask.

2 hours later…
10:43 PM
@AlanMunn Oh my!
@AlanMunn Amusing!

@PauloCereda Writing a PhD thesis: a report on the effects of procrastination

11:07 PM
@egreg good title!

@PauloCereda It has a colon, so it's a good thesis.

@egreg :)
