9:02 PM
@JosephWright Oh, case changing reminds of some quite unresolved u+1E9E business that i can only talk about in a therapists office with dolls.

@Johannes_B I probably should add that functionality before talking about this in Germany

@JosephWright :-)

@JosephWright boo

@JosephWright What does \AllTeX look like?

@SeanAllred (La)TeX

9:12 PM
@JosephWright Gotcha :)

@SeanAllred Karl's put that in: my version was just in plain text

@SeanAllred -- i'm trying to send you something off-line. i don't tweet, and the promised "about" link on your website is invisible. please send email. thanks.

@barbarabeeton Hehe -- yeah, I really need to work on my website :)

@SeanAllred -- take a look in ltugboat.cls for the definition. comes in very handy for lots of things.

@barbarabeeton I don't believe I have your email :(

9:19 PM
@SeanAllred -- ever tried looking at a tex.sx profile? not even encrypted.

@barbarabeeton Oh, I did -- I guess I just wasn't looking in the right place :)
@barbarabeeton In the about box to the left? the AMS email?

@SeanAllred -- yup. that's the one.

@barbarabeeton Sent

@SeanAllred -- thanks -- will have to wait until tomorrow -- fire alarm just went off in the building. sigh.

@barbarabeeton I know that feeling...

9:31 PM
@barbarabeeton You are involved with unicode. What is your opinion on U+1E9E? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_%E1%BA%9E

@PauloCereda: Do you know the book Mobile library by David Whitehouse?

@ChristianHupfer Oh no. :(
Is it good?

@PauloCereda: Yes, I finished it in about three days, although there are more than 300 pages... There is an parrot appearing and some ducks mentioned ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Penguins missing.

@PauloCereda: Well, the ducks part is quite limited, to be honest :-( But the ara(ra) even got a name)

9:41 PM
@Johannes_B opinion in what sense?

@FrankMittelbach Unicode maps the uppercase version to SS but german law (?) says capital sz is mandatory for geographical names. How/who/where to implement some sort of switch?

@Johannes_B Just my opinion: if it's well made, as in the images there, it's much better to read, easier digestible in context then SS

@Johannes_B: Always those IDE users ... shaking my head ;-)

@Johannes_B Just need to think of a good name then will add to expl3's experimental case changing code
@Johannes_B de-Eszett seems most obvious, other suggestions welcome

@StefanKottwitz It could uppercase to U+1F4A9 as long as there is some kind of switch involved. I think this is somehow needed to opt-out/opt-in.

9:45 PM
@ChristianHupfer ooooh

@Johannes_B or opt-forced-to-decide :-)

@JosephWright de as in deutsch, or de as in don't/anti?

@Johannes_B de as in ISO identifier for German :-)

@JosephWright :-)

@Johannes_B Possibly should be de-DE-... (legal business applies in Germany but not other German-speaking countries)

9:48 PM
@JosephWright Right, ask @Mico, they got rid of the ß a while ago completely.

@Johannes_B You are thinking Switzerland?

@JosephWright don't know if by-DE needs the Eszett

@JosephWright Yes, sorry. Wasn't clear enough.

@StefanKottwitz Well doesn't apply to all German in Germany at present, so it's complex

@JosephWright such peculiarities are a strength of TeX, so it would be great to support it

9:56 PM
Guys, gotta go. Library is closing. See you. :-)

@Johannes_B Good night!
my Hotel's WiFi is still open luckily :-)
though sometimes slow

@Johannes_B: Good night

10:11 PM
@JosephWright I just saw your blog post about the error bars
I think it is better to use
\pgfplotsset{
  error bars/error mark options={draw=none},
}

Hi all, I have a very trivial mindmap-related question (the tikz library) . Who's savvy with that library

@1010011010 I avoid that stuff like the plague :)

@percusse What a luxury....

@1010011010 Fire away. It is TikZ anyways.

@percusse I would like to hack the library to place a shape that isn't a dull uniformly coloured circle, but allow for arbitrary shapes. What are my odds of getting it done? The alternative is coding something from the ground up; I intend to automate the final product as a fancied up table of contents.

10:24 PM
@1010011010 That was actually a question on this site long time ago. The catch which makes it almost impossible is that arbitrary shapes don't admit a simple formula for the blending.
What TikZ does is to compute a size, place a colored circle. Then computes the arc with the same size and starts drawing from its border.

@percusse The thing is, I only really use the blending part per se. Just looking for the automated node placement. There's probably a better way to do it if that's not an issue eh...

@1010011010 I used to draw an arbitrary shape with a circular bump at its side. And overwrite the circular thingy with that.
Other than that requires attention depending on your shape. Do you have some particular shape in mind?

I have something very specific in mind. I'm trying to find a publicly available rendition of the shape.

@1010011010 Windows+R --> mspaint
hmm paint.exe is not paint.exe anymore strange

@percusse :-) I am willing to go very, veeeeeeery far for a marginal improvement in the final print. Give me a moment, I think I have something.
Oh egads! Paint does not paint any longer...
@percusse nature.com/nphys/journal/v4/n7/fig_tab/nphys998_F2.html The idea is to reproduce the leftmost picture, with each "unit" a little like this: i.imgur.com/FknJpRa.png?1
Obviously with different size, depending on whether it's a chapter, section, etc. But all of that can be added later, I guess. Got to start small.
I'm not going to ask you to reproduce the image, I'll take care of that. Just need to know whether it makes sense to even start trying to reproduce the image.
Tikzpictures can be matrix transformed too right? Doesn't matter if it's a ToC? I'd like to mimic a slight sense of depth as well.

10:41 PM
@1010011010 I tried something quick
\usetikzlibrary{mindmap,shapes.geometric,snakes}
% Below redefines that thingy
\makeatletter
\tikzset{circle connection bar/.style={
to path={
  \pgfextra{%
    \tikz@lib@mindmap@check{\tikztostart}%
    \tikz@compute@circle@radii\tikz@compute@segmentamplitude%
  }
  [every circle connection bar]
  decorate [snake]
  { -- (\tikztotarget) \tikztonodes}
},
append after command={[draw=\tikz@concept@color]}
}}
\makeatother
%===================

\begin{tikzpicture}
[root concept/.append style={concept color=blue!80},

If blending between the two node types is possible that's a plus I suppose. E.g. if I have a smaller one next to it, it smoothly transitions from one to the other, rather than having white space.

I think you can modify this further for your liking. Apparently you can do stuff :)
So depends on what kind of connection you want. And the color choices are amazing as usual for a color blind.
I randomly chose the connection to be a snake decoration but you can put your fading bar in between instead
Am I making sense?

Haha thanks this might actually work...
I don't know this fading bar thing, but I'll look trough the pgfmanual. How hard can it be...

It's not that crazy but remember fading a line is tough. Draw a thin rectangle instead. I just found the definition of that blending bar and modified it. So it should be doable. Otherwise you do the shapes and fire the question and watch the gladiators kill each other in the PGF arena.

An alternative is to not want to fade at all...
Just set some different colours for different chapters, don't interconnect them. Done.

10:52 PM
@1010011010 words of wisdom

I'm going to have to further refine this some other day, you know, somewhere before midnight. :-)
Going to check out for now. I'll let you in on the result*.

* = might take a while

@1010011010 Good luck.

Thanks. Night.

11:48 PM
@egreg three more easy tikz questions like that and you get your badge:-)

@DavidCarlisle :)
Good night!

@egreg night
