@RebeccaChernoff I've got another blog question, if you're here
I'm doing a comparison of a few similar apps where I rank each app on a bunch of metrics and tests. The 'best app' is determined by the app that has the best score overall, but I'd like to be able to customize that to each reader's priorities.
For example, if a user doesn't care about price, that's a factor in which app they choose. Or if a user doesn't care as much about ease of use as they do performance.
So, to do that, I'd like to include a little JavaScript 'widget'.
Is there any way that I could add an arbitrary script that works with arbitrary HTML in a post?
(bold = tldr, not yelling :)

Some days, XKCD is just too smart for me.
thenextweb.com/apple/2012/02/03/… This change is a big deal to me. I'm much more on-board with using iBooks Author now.
Man, a software update just to update the EULA? When has that ever happened before?
@JasonSalaz it's a joke based on the similar sounding etymology and entomology, the former being the study of the sources of words, the latter being the study of insects
Re: Daniel's link, tl;dr hahahaha I was right
Re: XKCD, the alt text of that comic talks about yet another joke then. I figured today's comic was referencing etymology man two strips back, but then I read the alt text and was further confused.
P.S. I think I mean title text.
@JasonSalaz My concerns were valid for the EULA as originally written, but I'm delighted that you were right about their intentions. I can print the output of iBooks Author and charge to recoup my photocopy cost without violating the EULA now. I couldn't before.
Re XKCD, I got the joke in the cartoon, but I'm still lost on the alt text.
02:57
@Daniel same
Kyle was of course right about businesses and assumed risk, I'm just glad I'm completely right now. It feels good. :)
you were right about what, exactly?
@Daniel according to the xkcd forums, the third is supposed to be etiology, something I've never heard of
But, as a wise man once said, don't explain the joke

PDFs generated by iBooks Author being completely free to use however someone wants.
They weren't. Now they are. Cool feature enabled by software update.
Although I hate to download the program again just to turn on that feature.
03:01
Hmmm, it's completely I possible to reply via the mobile interface?
Could be worse, could be Xcode :).
Indeed. If Xcode only let you sell your output via the App Store, there would be an uproar.
Ba-zing.
03:13
Daniel really likes quoting me.
Wow, what a terrible clip.
I forgot how much I hated TV shows and canned laughter.
Is that The Big Bang Theory?
.o0(Note to self, keep not watching The Big Bang Theory)
I hate them too, but I tolerate it if the show's enjoyable

I like quotes. You're not the only one I've quoted here, Jason. They're even more fun out of context.

hahahahahahhaa, hmmm
I don't remember which one I did first!
I didn't read my e-mail until the early afternoon, and I know I had the SE Blog open when I said that.
But I might have had the SE blog open because of your e-mail.
I love the days I can remember my train association brain, but this is not one of those times.
@JasonSalaz I saw your thing about having the SE styled blog... it got proposed a while ago actually

A: Power the blog content and discussion with Meta instead of WordPress

Jeff AtwoodIt's not a bad idea, but I think it has some downsides too many eggs in one basket meta is already stretched as a semi-discussion site, stretching it into a blog feels a bit like kitchen-sink-itis would be additional coding work specific to meta

Jeff AtwoodWe're definitely looking at this and I, at least, feel it is strongly on-mission. However, it would be a major feature and will take (seriously, no really) 6-8 months to put together. And of course there are other things we're working on, but just know that we think this is a great idea that so...

Stu ThompsonNo. Not everybody can be bothered to keep up with MSO. blog.stackoverflow.com is a better outlet for Jeff's propaganda because it is almost always on topic, and almost never repetative posts are 100% official has a much higher signal-to-noise ration than MSO lower volume of posts, which suits...

No. Thanks Stu.
You're just ahead of your time, Kyle.
03:32
yeah
I remember when I created the phpBB-based meta site, and Jeff created the real meta shortly after
then on meta.SE, I was pushing for free metas with every SE site
and now we do
so, meta.se existed back in the day?
and now it should do so again? and MSO should be only about SO? sigh
meta.SE was about the SE 1.0 product
actually, I do remember that.
lolololol zerg overflow
03:34
but I agree, they should rename MSO to meta.SE and make a meta.SO for SO-only stuff
now it just redirects to MSO? sigh
yeah
I know there was a lot of stuff there that's no longer relevant now that SE 1.0 no longer exists, but I still think that the content should be preserved somewhere
why?
same reason as 'legacy' community wikis?
"memories"?
ugh, when I type app and wait, chrome's first result is .blogoverflow.com and not .stackexchange.com, UGH. blogoverflow is not my majority browsing case
p.s. stack exchange. 'blog.askdifferent.com' and 'askdifferent.com' would go a LONG WAY TOWARDS FIXING THIS.
well, one example was on my mod election bio from last year I linked to the original Apple proposal I made on meta.SE
and as soon as the election went live (and I couldn't edit the bio) they took meta.SE down
so I looked stupid with a broken link
Doesn't seem to have deterred you.
03:48
what, looking stupid?
Doesn't seem to have deterred your election chances*.
no, but it was frustrating
it's also part of Ask Different's history
indeed
there was a whole discussion I had with Robert Cartaino about overlapping subject areas for sites
it's because I pushed for this proposal that sites can overlap
04:08
@JasonSalaz can you test this? if it's true, this could be a good candidate for the iOS 5 tiny things post ios.finerthingsin.com/post/16982049392/…

Great! Filevault 2 is so easy to crack when you have access to the password on the RAM. You only need 995$. lostpassword.com/kit-forensic.htm
:(
20:38
I meant 'bypassing' instead of 'cracking'. This solution only steals the key from the RAM.
@KyleCronin I'd be cool if you would talk about his on the next podcast. tuaw.com/2012/02/03/…

@gentmatt Physical access is total access.
Hasn't this always been the case? Firewire goes straight on the BUS, gain access and you gain, well, access....
Anyone used WunderKit?
22:20
Well, this is just saaaad. I can't believe that the RAM allows such risks. Maybe special hardware is necessary for the 99,99% protection?
Nothing is 100% secure, at the end of the day computers are designed to be used, security is almost always retrofitted

@gentmatt Physical access is total access.
If someone has physical access to your computer, you can deter, but you cannot prevent. Period. End of discussion.
It depends on what you're trying to prevent exactly, but given enough time, effort, skill/knowledge, and access, they can get in. It's really as simple as that.
The only secure computer is the one that has never been used for anything by anyone
Unless you want to type in your unencryption key for every bye of information that is unencrypted as and when required.
And even then your key is in emory for the length of time it takes to sign the hash etc.
There really is no way around this, if it can be made available to 1 user it can be made available to more given the right tools, enough time, and sufficient access whether remote or local.
Hey @JasonSalaz Do you know anything about wireless mics?
I have a lavalier mic that is only transmitting one channel.
And I think it may be the power supply, I don't know....
@stuffe What about you?
Do you know anything about this stuff?
Or Nathan.
As you can tell, it is an "urgent" problem.....
Urgent as in I want to get it done, not have to.
23:29
Nope, sorry
too bad
Although my gut instinct says I can't see why a power supply would affect such a thing
That's really the only thing I can think of
The mic was working not too long ago
I am not using the original power supply and I think it isn't the right voltage/amps
so it's causing it to only receive one channel
OK, does the unit have it's requirements stated near the input socket?
23:32
@daviesgeek What model is the mic?
And I've checked it
@NathanGreenstein It's a Shure PGX1 transmitter
And a Shure PGX4 receiver
And it was working until recently?
Did it stop working immediately after you switched the power supply?
That's where I don't know...
23:34
Do you know if it worked at all after the new supply?
So it's the PGX4 receiver you think has the problem,, not the PGX1 transmitter which you can run on batteries by the look of it
@NathanGreenstein no
@stuffe Yes
Power Requirements: 12–18 Vdc at 150 mA, supplied by external power supply
Seems relatively loose requirements, what did you replace with?
Afraid I've got to leave again atm, but if it seems likely that it stopped working after switching the power supply, that's probably the problem. Strange as it sounds...
A 12V 300mA supply
I just realized the 300mA part
23:35
Basicaly anything at 12v and more than 150Ma would work, you can exceed no problem
Should be fine
Maybe it's the output that I'm using on the receiver.
What would be bad would be if it needed 300Ma, and you gave it 150Ma, it would work twice as hard and burn out
I'm using the 1/4 out, not the XLR
@stuffe Ouch.
Unfortunately, I don't have an XLR cable...
23:38
Time to beg borrow or steal.
Battery says I gotta go!
Night all
