Hmm
Seems a lot of potential in that question

Seems like 2 questions in one question. "I have created a mess of Python packages." and "there is some advice online that package managers like conda are non-intrusive, and if I install one, the packages I install there won't interfere with the ones installed with pip and apt"

I'm not sure the current answers to the target really cover it, though it would probably be reasonable to write an answer that does to the target
@Kulfy I see that as a "what should I have done instead?" Which could reasonably be included in an answer
Maybe

Python 2 isn't installed by default in 18.04 and later releases. 20.04 even has python-is-python3 package which makes python3 as "default" python.
May be I should comment to ask for clarity.

@pomsky I use Vanilla GNOME. The virtual keyboard seems different from Ubuntu GNOME's keyboard. It doesn't have emoji switch. Is there anyway to switch the keyboard or enable emoji switch in Vanilla GNOME's keyboard?

@Kulfy The python-is-python3 package isn't installed by default, though, is it?

Yeah it isn't installed by default. It's an optional package.

6:08 AM
Is there any documentation of the shift to python 3 on our site?

Aren't deleted posts removed in data dumps?

> The data is updated early every Sunday morning around 3:00 UTC. The last update was 1 hour ago.

@jokerdino Isn't it 3 UTC already? The query is still showing posts removed by Community bot.

@Kulfy which query?

@Kulfy Can a reworded version of this reply be edited into the answer?
Maybe that's not necessary.

7:15 AM
@Kulfy yes, the deleted posts are in another table with limited data
that table is PostsWithDeleted
it has a field for user ID but that field is empty!

@Kulfy lots of deleted posts in there. shame

@EliahKagan "OP merely needs to execute them": I guess this is only relevant part of the comment.
@Zanna Does that mean Posts table now shouldn't have deleted posts?

@jokerdino are you sure it has been done?
sometimes it is late
@Kulfy yes

Hmm. But those posts are still there.

@Zanna that's what the FAQ says.

7:17 AM
@jokerdino I look forward to resume helping roomba once data dump is completed.

uhmm

I seem to remember several occasions when the data dump was late or otherwise at a different time or different day
@Zanna I mention this only because I wasted a lot of time trying to fix a query that used that field. After turning it inside out a few times and finding nothing wrong with the logic whichever way I looked at it, I finally had the idea of printing out all the fields to see if they had the expected things. Shows what a huge noob I am to coding anything :)

dupe Or a CW answer can also be posted from comments. But this question haven't got any anony votes so far.
Why was this deleted last month?
Does it look like an answer?
Are Chrome and Chromium bases browsers responsible for GPUCache as claimed by this answer?
The questions which are being looked by heynnema sometimes need massive cleanup in comments section :/

there's autoflag if comments exceed 20

Almost all comments are no longer needed in this question
I remember Thomas asked them to use "move to chat" dialog and not to engage in long discussions in comments section only. But they seem to prefer comments section.

purge everything if the question is answered

@Kulfy I'm not sure that link always appears when it seems like it ought to.

At least mods get the button 💪

@Kulfy I've voted to reopen the question (see my comment).
@jokerdino The solution is to make more mods.
Also I am hoping the button to move comments to chat has a "💪" icon on it.

@EliahKagan If I'm correct if more than 2 users are engaging, it takes more time/comments to appear. But they do the same even if they are the only one engaging. I'm not targeting anyone but sometimes this creates a lot of noise on the site.

7:36 AM
Yeah, I think it's cases with more than two that I'm thinking of actually.
Where it doesn't appears as soon as one might like.

does the button ever appear if one of the users hasn't got enough reputation to chat?

yes

@EliahKagan I was the last one to CV. OP never replied to the comments and it seems like a case of "hit and run" but at least it won't be considered as abandoned. Nevertheless, I have voted to reopen.

I'm going by the paths.

Should it be considered as answer? It's more like "reinstall the system".

7:43 AM
I consider that an answer

seems unclear. I'm not sure which of the three answers would help.

Sorry, anyone here knows how to make graphs in data.SE?

first 3 comments on this answer are no longer needed given the answer is highly voted.
@jokerdino I didn't know data.SE supports graphs

@Kulfy welcome aboard

Well IMO you can run query, have CSV, open in LibreOffice or MS Excel and create graphs there.

D:

@jokerdino it becomes automatically available if you have the right column type combinations
see just below this section data.stackexchange.com/help#magic-columns
but I have not actually attempted it
what data would you like to graph?

Questions asked in the year 2020, questions with answers and without.
maybe it does not do much

ok I'll give it a try

I just wanted to fiddle with it and it goes beyond my head

Is it worthy to undelete answers that were highly voted and got deleted by OP

Depends™

oh you want to do it yourself :)

Last 3 out of 4 comments are no longer needed. Last one is just an opinion and "isn't supported" is a valid answer.
@jokerdino What your take on this answer
@jokerdino Let me know if the mod flag queue gets heavily populated. I'll stop flagging comments :)

it's in single digits
so it doesn't matter

But I have 15 flags pending :P

@Kulfy the comments in that answer is claiming this answer has damaged their system?

just flag all comments by EC ;)

What is CommunityOwnedDate in PostsWithDeleted?
@jokerdino evancarroll.net :P

@Kulfy the documentation is very brief but I think it is the date when a post became a community wiki
that field is in the Posts table as well

8:50 AM
I see. Thanks for the docs.

they are not that helpful :/

Community bot seems to have deleted ~400 abandoned questions which were an year old.

I had voted to reject this edit but now I think that may have been a mistake. The edit appears correct, and I may have too hastily concluded that it conflicted with the intent of the post.

The unicode number for right arrow is 2192 →
Ctrl + Shift + U + 2192 →

no improvement - this edit removed some important information (the citations to the AWK script!) and makes other information far less clear (the input to the AWK script)

4:22 PM

@EliahKagan cool arrow, what's the number?

@Natty tp

I also want to know. The normal arrow is so small it looks like I need to clean my screen

27F6

⟶ cool

4:24 PM
Of course there is always $\longrightarrow$. :)
@Zanna The one thing to be aware of with "⟶" is what happens when it's formatted as code an thus shown in a monospace font: ""

@EliahKagan yep, that's the one for me
@EliahKagan wipes screen
well it's better than stretching all the other characters to fit the arrow...

I'm used to the arrow head becoming extremely small for that. But I guess in the font used here in chat the arrow-heads are already extremely small.
@Zanna Since you can render TeX with MathJax (because you have a userscript for it), you can copy the resulting glyph in a browser. That's not just a convenience way of getting it, though. That glyph is the same 27F6 as "⟶". When rendered from TeX, it appears better because MathJax also applies a different style.

yay for MathJax

maybe misclick

This question must be a dupe of something. Can it just be closed as a duplicate of How do I install Ubuntu? I believe Ubuntu MATE still uses Ubiquity list most flavors, not Calamares like new releases of Lubuntu.

5:01 PM
@Kulfy I'm not sure. Do they look like the same keyboard with only difference being the emoji key? Or is one them Caribou and the other being Onboard?

5:17 PM
@EliahKagan o.O

5:30 PM
@pomsky This is what I have on login screen and this is what I have in my user session.
Why this query is now Stack Overflow's query?
This is weird. Sometimes it shows SO and sometimes AU while accessing from my edit history.
On a lighter note the query is now returning 1917 rows which means about ~144 posts were deleted by Community yesterday.

5:46 PM
Now in my edit history, they're pointing to data.se.com/askubuntu. Is it a bug?

Is this question a duplicate? All I've found is that question but I thought we had something specifically about that particular error.

A: How to fix "not a valid identifier" error after setting environment variables?

Eliah Kagan but after setting the environmental variables It looks like you did not do that correctly. The errors you're getting mean that the paths (like /home/john/android) are being used as the names of variables, rather than as the values assigned to them. The correct syntax to assign a variable ...

Thanks! I knew there was something! :)
I've voted to close it with that as the dupe target.

5:56 PM
Wait!!! You don't have gold badge?

I do not. Just . (And on meta.)
I don't have enough answers for the gold badge.

@Kulfy Hmm... not sure, the one from the login screen looks like Caribou. Did you check whether you have Onboard installed?

Ah. Still need to answer 275 questions.

Just 75. (Out of a required total of 200.)

@pomsky What's the package name for that?

5:59 PM
@Kulfy onboard and caribou

@EliahKagan Sorry. I don't know why I was thinking of 400. Thanks for correcting.

No problem.

@pomsky apt list --installed | grep onboard doesn't produce any result.
Both aren't installed o.O

Strange!

I do have keyboard-configuration installed.

6:02 PM
@Kulfy if you log in again, it often defaults to Stack Overflow, but I am not sure of the exact details. Generally I find SEDE behaves like it's juggling cookies

This old question can be closed as a duplicate of something with better, more thorough answers, right?

there is a box under the [Run Query] button to change the site it runs on
(well, there is for me anyway)

Q: How do I add environment variables?

huffI'm running Ubuntu 11.04. I use the terminal to start a bash session, and I want to add an environment variable: $r@hajt:~$ env THEVAR=/example But it's not working. It shows all the variables with THEVAR being the last one, but another call to env does not show THEVAR anymore- env | grep THEV...

This one?

why is there so much disagreement about where and how to set environment variables?

@Zanna If not, one can change the site name in the query URL from stackoverflow to askubuntu (or just ubuntu which will redirect to the same URL but with it expanded to askubuntu).
@Kulfy I think I was thinking of something else, maybe something that addressed why .bash_profile is rarely used for this (or at all) in Ubuntu... but really that's the best target. So I've duped it to that. Thanks! We can add more targets as well if any others are clearly useful.

6:06 PM
@EliahKagan that may actually be easier when your browser is running slow - those automatic search-as-you-type boxes are sometimes so laggy

I always do it that way.

Switching site is fine but I was curious that why data.se changes site everytime I login.

that's why I never login

I sometimes wonder if SEDE is so tricky just to keep us on our toes

I bookmark the link and go straight there

6:08 PM
@jokerdino Then bear the pain of captcha

it's recaptcha

It's sometimes frustrating on shared connections.
Good catch :)

@EliahKagan is this person using WSL?
It probably makes no difference at all in this case
was just thinking of any tags to add

@Zanna I don't know. Either way, they shouldn't set environment variables in ~./bashrc.

:)
@EliahKagan closed :D

Where do they find space for all these buttons I wonder

May be mods need 2 monitor setup ;-)
(unrelated) This answer was posted on other question as well. Should one question be closed as dupe of another?

I don't think so because there could be solutions that work on one and not the other

Sorry to sound negative, but I'm quite sure now despite having a high rep, the OP of this question doesn't understand how the site and the community works.
Also not an easy user to deal with, as they often come off as someone who is not at all open to suggestions.

6:32 PM
@EliahKagan Do you remember a few months ago you raised an issue in this room, how they categorically denied your request to clarify their question with a comment "what does it matter what I have tried?"?

I have enough space for all the buttons.

Of course you were right at that time realising that it was an XY-question and it was absolutely essential to know what exactly they wanted to achieve, what they tried and how it failed (see the comments below my answer (which I'm pretty sure they downvoted), which is surely a valid answer to their question as it was posted, but it of course it was not what they were trying to achieve).
After wasting everyone's time, finally they posted another question, thankfully this time with the details.

@pomsky I thought it was fixit7

@jokerdino I feel fixit7 often fails to understand things, but I always felt they always politely accept and welcome suggestions.

@pomsky And they agreed that it's a dupe.

6:36 PM
there was a new question from fixit7 today I think

@Kulfy Not immediately without making a fuss, see the comments to get a slight idea.

Assume good faith y'all.

Anyway, sorry for this whining, I feel a bit bitter today.

@pomsky anyway, I did not fully understand that meta post. Which answer got edited after it was closed as duplicate? Where did karel answer anything?
Is the person saying the answer was duplicated instead of the question itself being closed as duplicates?

Are they accusing the other answerer for plagiarism?

6:42 PM
Are we also going to close that question Cameron linked in the meta post?

I'll rather hold off my CV for now. I believe that'll heat up arguments. I'll wait for the meta post to get cleared and answered.

@Kulfy no, Cameron claims the manpages has the same solution as his answer

@jokerdino I think they're talking about this answer. They somehow believe this answer plagiarised their own answer as it was edited 2 days ago (by Community bot, that routine formatting edit). Another indicator that they don't understand how things work at all as they really think it's karel's answer.

@jokerdino OK so they are accusing manpage?

Regardless, the question they answered was asked today. The edit to the other question was made not today.
There is no clash of timeline as far as I can see.

6:47 PM
@jokerdino One more indicator... :D

They have also linked to another question which I think we should close as duplicate and also look through any other question they have answered and close them as well.

They have already added an answer on the target.

Oh no, that answer probably copied their previous answer, therefore this is the duplicated of the duplicate target, which was unfairly shut down.

They must read Zanna's answer on their older question.
4
A: Possible Duplicate Post, How to reserve an answer?

ZannaDon't do that. If the post is not a duplicate, and really deserves a unique answer, and trying to reopen it by voting to reopen, commenting, editing etc has failed, then solicit support in chat or post on meta to get it reopened. For me, someone wanting to post an answer is nearly always enough ...

DPP mhmm

6:52 PM
(unrelated) dupe

7:19 PM
Since duplicate banners and comments have changed last year, should a new answer be posted on this meta question?
or closed as no-repro or tagged with ?

8:23 PM
@Kulfy It shouldn't be closed as no repro. We don't actually have that on meta, and also it's not for things that are merely currently non-reproducible for historical reasons. It might be closeable as a duplicate of something else. A moderator could add if that's considered to apply. Posting an answer would be fine and is probably a good idea.
@pomsky Yes, though I don't remember the details.
Is something going on with that now?

9:03 PM
@EliahKagan No, nothing with that one. The OP posted this meta question.
I was just whining about it. :p
My message chain actually started with this one
