@Zanna Just asking, This question was marked as duplicate of this question. But after considering no. of views, votes and anony feedback I believe reverse close votes would be better (i.e. target should be reversed). Let me know what's your opinion.
@Kulfy I would only bother to attempt something like that if one of the posts obviously had a much better answer that was getting ignored because of the close direction. Do you have some reason to think kyodake's answer is better? I am wondering if merging those questions would be a good idea because the answers are different
@Kulfy Despite the voting difference between the two questions and their answers, I still prefer the direction of the duplication to stay the way it is.
Rinzwind's accepted answer may seem less hospitable at first glance, but I regard it as a high quality answer.
(misleading titles also lead to views that are not helpful to the viewer - hence great need to fix them)
it's definitely good imho to redirect people from bad/mediocre stuff with many views (that they are going to land on because it's top of the page in the search engine) to better and more up-to-date stuff
but in this case idk which of the answers is better
@Kulfy seems like a reasonable case. But merging is irreversible and quite destructive so needs to be carefully considered. People looking for that topic are likely to read both of those posts linked as they are I think...
@Zanna I agree with your points but in this particular case the duplicate is relatively newer and has more views and votes. Also, title looks pretty straight forward. So, I think it's better to merge them. I'm just presenting my opinion and everything else depends on the veterans of this community :)
oh! I didn't notice the closed one was actually newer! I wonder why it has so many more views
I agree both of them have fine titles at the moment... I just have a big thing about bad titles haha
You can post on meta if you think it's something that would improve the site... I wonder how we should interpret the anon downvotes on the target question. Maybe people are telling us it's less helpful than the dupe
@Zanna May be like this: "There is a query on data.stackexchange.com which let you know about the total anonymous up/down votes. These votes are very helpful in determining the usefulness or quality of posts by unregistered users or users who don't have enough rep. to up/down vote". You can improve grammar/words here. But again I think we need opinions about what do to.
@Kulfy sorry I am confused. I mean you could post about this particular question an merging it. I was just wondering aloud about the meaning of the downvotes
yes... they are not very good... maybe there is scope for a better answer. I guess Ubuntu does not really offer what people hope to find when they search for this topic and there's not so much we can do about that, but there might be a way to write something more explanatory and beginner-friendly than the existing answers.
Given the range of advice, it might even be worth indexing the answers, if a merge were to take place
you are free to post on meta any time you want of course :) I am going afk for a while and I might think about it and have another look when I get back in a few hours, but don't let that deter you if you have decided on your position
@Kulfy seems a matter of opinion, no doubt users have different preferences :)
