@Zanna well I have flagged that post to ask that it be closed as a duplicate instead
(((I hate it when people say sorry for things they could have not done instead. Like, "I know this is bad, but I'm doing it anyway, and I'm going to disingenuously express regret while doing so!" Anything that starts with "sorry, but..." makes me unreasonably angry)))

@Zanna Maybe. Did something happen in Ubuntu that provided evidence toward the conclusion or that, in hindsight, suggested it? If so, then I would not close; if not, and they had a hardware problem that was revealed by something outside Ubuntu (such as on the hardware) and that provides no connection for future readers from something in Ubuntu to that particular problem, then I think it's no repro.
Huh, maybe I should post something like that as a self-answer to my meta question.

This question was migrated to meta, then closed as off-topic there. (There is overlap between the migraters on main and the OT close voters on meta, too, which is strange.) So, should we try to get it reopened on main? Reopened on meta? Reopened and reclosed as a duplicate (see comment) on meta?

I'd say reopen meta
However, it might get rightfully closed as dupe
Possible duplicate of Printing Ask Ubuntu pagesmuru 10 hours ago
off-topic is wrong though on meta IMHO
But there's no way to vote for reopen, due to the complex migration/rejection procedure. Needs mod action.

I'm inclined to agree. It's about printing pages on the site. Different sites have different best approaches to printing. If it's closed as a duplicate, Fabby's answer could even be merged.
I love how the custom flagging dialog disappears at the slightest provocation. It's awesome.
:)
So anyway, I'll raise a custom flag.

I talked about that post earlier...
@Zanna there

12:03 PM

@Zanna Sorry, I missed it.
@ByteCommander I've raised a custom flag.
@Zanna Sorry. Had you flagged? Is my flag redundant?

no worries, Smokey built a wall around it XD
I flagged it, but I think more flags could be helpful
I didn't think of it being on topic on main... but I guess it could be haha

This is some real clever stuff! :O They're master-spammers.

I mentioned (after some more of Smokey's messages, which I really wish I could delete (can I just have that one mod power please SE overlords?) that I had flagged the closed meta question asking that it be closed as a duplicate as muru suggested. But anything but being closed as off topic would be an improvement

We could make a third room for moving Smokey's old messages to.

12:13 PM
good idea... but is it just me who's bothered by them?

looks like a spam

@pomsky agreed & flagged

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Manually reported question: The website and app builder tools by wasce1975 on askubuntu.com

If something is spam, someone should report it in Charcoal HQ to Smokey, if it didn't get detected yet.
I did it for the one above now.

@ByteCommander can anyone make messages there like that one effectively?

12:24 PM
@Zanna Sometimes it makes it hard to see what's going on... but I think not more so than just having more than one thing discussed at the same time, which is inevitable. Personally, I would not bother making another room or asking for them to be deleted. But if it bothers you, it would be fine to do it. If we do make another room for them, then we'll have to check it from time to time, in case people reply to them or accidentally try to the use the room for something else.
@Zanna If it really has nothing to do with the site, then it's about how to print from a browser, which is on-topic for the main site if the user is using Ubuntu. But it's just on-topic for meta. I mean, if somebody asked, "How can I search for exact text in just one question and its answers," we wouldn't close that as off-topic on the grounds that the way to do it also works for most other websites.
I can't actually think of an example of anything, not even Ctrl+F, that works on all websites. There's a lot of variation across websites. There are a lot of badly designed websites where things one might expect to work don't. And a lot of people don't know about useful features present in almost all browsers. When someone needs help using Ask Ubuntu, they shouldn't have their meta question closed on the grounds that what they're asking for is also relevant to using other websites.
It's good that comments and the custom flagging dialog have character limits to rein me in, because I could write a whole book about why that OT closure on meta makes no sense.

@Zanna no, you need basic SmokeDetector privileges.
But simply posting something like "Hey, [link] seems to be spam and did not get reported." in Charcoal HQ should be enough so that one of the resident people will properly report it for you.

@EliahKagan You could make a Gallery room so that only specific people get write access

@Natty tp
@ByteCommander Good point.

12:33 PM
@Natty tp

The description should then say what the room is for and contain a link here. That would be fine though.
@Zanna So we could do that if you prefer. Of course, actually moving the messages to the room would be a source of additional, recurring work. But not more work than deleting them if you were a moderator. So if you'd delete them if you could...

@EliahKagan I was close to the limit with my flag on that one hahaha
@EliahKagan I guess I should think about this option
@ByteCommander thanks

This is a correct suggestion I believe.

12:48 PM
yes, I don't think there is a grub command, at least not by default, and update-grub is definitely what's needed

@pomsky Approved.

@pomsky VTC'd btw.

OP agreed with the dupe suggestion
BTW This question is "unanswered"... is the answer to it we just edited likely to work...? is it a dupe of something?

That meta question has been reopened and reclosed as a duplicate. It's still locked, though. I think it should either be unlocked or merged, but I'm not sure which.

Either this question is OT Ubuntu+1 or I think it is probably unclear (but in that case it should get a comment requesting specific information).

5:43 PM
doesn't look version-specific

Do you think it has enough information to be answered?

@EliahKagan Looks like a bug to me.
Can anyone confirm this happens while installing 16.04?
I thought this is specific to 18.04 for now (all the outrages and so...) reference

6:02 PM
I rarely use "vanilla" Ubuntu so if it did happen when installing 16.04, at least from one of the newer point releases, I wouldn't know about it. Maybe the OP will reply. In any case, I think that the question is not off-topic. Ubiquity on 18.04 is not going to get a design change because all the freezes relevant to that have happened, so the question is on-topic even if about Ubuntu+1.
@pomsky Hmm, maybe the question or answer there should include a link to that article.

I totally agree that it should not be closed as off-topic.
But strange thing is OP made edits after I posted the comment, but didn't address it.
Maybe it was intentional, they're afraid it would be closed if people ubuntu+1 in the question.

The original question didn't say 16.04?

@EliahKagan Yes, it does. But I doubt that's true.

Oh, sorry. I understand.
I've commented.

@EliahKagan thanks!

Should this be closed as bug-report? I don't think even OP is looking for an answer -- see the original ending of the post (which I edited out).

7:37 PM
@pomsky I think it's either OT bug or unclear. I'm VTCing it as OT bug as you suggested. I'll also comment.
I've commented.

7:54 PM
Similar OT - bug-reports:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/971072/gnome-software-devours-memory-in-17-10
@EliahKagan Have you voted on these^ two questions?
If not, they can be closed as a dupe of this too.

I'll less sure those are effectively bug reports. Unlike the earlier one you linked to, those are asking something. But I probably agree that they can be duped...
@pomsky Okay, I've dupe-voted both.

8:12 PM
I assume this is the same person but I've forgotten what we're supposed to do here. I usually just approve them these days!
(going to sleep now in any case!)

8:48 PM
@Zanna I'd approve it if it contains nothing that appears contentious and there is no indication that it isn't the original author or that it harms the post.
I've approved that edit.
Then if it gets approved, I suggest commenting with a link to the instructions from the help about how to get accounts merged. If it's approved then you can @ the editor. Though I don't know what the system does when your ping potentially matches multiple users. In this case, it should be able to figure out who to notify because the @ notation will be an exact match of one account but not the other. What it will actually do... who knows.
We have this from ~6 years ago, where I asked about what to do for question edits ("OP"), but I suspect people would say the same principle applies:
6
Q: What to do when an anonymous user insists they are the OP for an edit?

Eliah KaganSome edits, such as those adding information about an OP's system, should only be made... by the OP, or at the OP's explicit request, or by someone who is merely putting the information into the question, from what the OP has actually said (usually from comments). It's not, generally speaking...

Oh thanks a lot!

9:05 PM
So if you happen to still be awake and you approve the edit, then that will be the second review and I can comment for the author.
Before submitting edit #3, I should have been more mindful about the need to avoid harming people's questions though unthoughtful editing!
I don't think we should close this question as a duplicate. The actual problem they are having is very much the topic of the question, it's something that can and probably has happened to lots of other people, and it's addressed extremely well in an answer there. The answer posted there would not be reasonable on the suggested originals.
