Is this question a duplicate of something?

2:07 AM
Should this be kept open?

I wouldn't assume it's off-topic, but it's seems quite unclear.

Yeah, same thing. Contains almost no info.

what is Ganache?
what's with the second dupe target for that question?

That's about how to install the Ganache appimage package and incidentally it's also about how to open it after it's been installed.

oh excellent

@Zanna The only software called Ganache that I have heard of is this.
@Zanna ...and it is distributed by AppImage (see the Ganache site), so the second original seems reasonable.

One more CV is required to close this question: How do I install Spotify in Ubuntu 16.04 as a duplicate of what has been frequently used as the canonical question on this topic.

Done.

11:56 AM
@Zanna I'm pretty sure they're saying something about how they had to create the live medium. At least back then, it was common to make a bootable USB stick by using one or another program (UNetbootin was popular) that wrote to its boot sector and otherwise just copied files to it. The USB stick would typically be formatted FAT32.
They may be referring to a full format / quick format, which is a traditional distinction in DOS and Windows, regarding whether or not a disk is scanned for problem areas before it is formatted. I'm unsure how this applies to flash media. I'm no expert on this.
A corrupted or incorrectly written image could potentially cause problems. Their answer may be correct. I wish it were more clear and detailed.

These two look like dupes:

VTC'd
For a second there I thought you were saying they were dupes of each other. :)

Oops! Should've made it clear.
Someone posted partial duplicates of old answers to both. I left a canned comment from here below one answer. Can/should something else be done to discourage similar behaviour?

My personal approach is to do nothing, except sometimes comment, unless it's a pattern. If it's a pattern then I do some combination of flagging, downvoting, and voting to delete, depending on what seems justified. The thing is, sometimes it does make sense to answer a question with a quote from another answer to another question on our site, because questions with the same answer are not necessarily duplicates.
So at minimum, if someone wrongly thinks they are not duplicates and does that, then they haven't really misused the system.
In those cases I would probably do nothing, except vote to close the questions as duplicates, as you and I have already done. That's not official or a site policy or anything though.

12:12 PM
Yeah, downvoting, flagging etc. in this particular scenario sound harsh.

Well downvoting might be okay. I wouldn't do it here though. They're correct answers that don't mislead.
Anyway, one reason I'm cautious about flagging and voting to delete answers that link to and reproduce material from another answer is that I think there is no easily expressed rule about when this is reasonable. Experienced users disagree all the time about whether or not questions are duplicates, and of what, and the direction in which they are closed as duplicates is determined subjectively based on what's useful.
Someone might think the newer question is better, or has another answer that's better, and write a "duplicate answer" of an answer on another question for that reason.
With that said, the best cases of reproducing material from other answers will also include some explanation -- even if it constitutes a relatively small portion of the post -- that addresses the specific differences between the questions. I would consider this post and that post to be very reasonable (and they do that).

Yes, "including some explanation" part sounds very reasonable.
:sigh: Somebody VTC'd (OT) this just after reading the first two words I believe.

12:31 PM
@pomsky You can just review it. A third Leave Open review will knock it from the queue.

done!

The close vote will take a while to age away. But I doubt it will get four more close votes.

1:22 PM
@Zanna Did the OP delete their question based on this comment? Did they think the attitude expressed there was authoritative and represents the views of our community? At least as applied to that particular question, I think that comment likely misled. People ask questions without giving enough information about what they've done all the time. We ask them for information.

1:34 PM
@Zanna Well, I'm no longer worried that my judgment about closure might be clouded by my annoyance at the misinformation, nor am I really any longer hopeful that something more specifically suited to the OP's needs will be posted.
The top answer on the target attempts to relate the issue to how "everything is a file descriptor," which does not actually make any sense, but I think they're still duplicates and I'm not aware of any particularly good reason to dupe them the other way.
@Zanna At this point, should a CW answer be posted, or something?
Btw sorry about all the pings. I'm about to move some messages to the island, so I'm going through everything, and while doing so, I'm noticing stuff I missed or that I'm not aware of having been followed up on.

@EliahKagan is that question actually clear enough to answer o.O now I'm not sure... but the commenters seemed to know what they were talking about!
@EliahKagan no problem! I don't mind pings, and I hate letting things slide

3:39 PM
does the dupe suggestion here really cover that? I mean, I don't of PPAs as Ubuntu repositories?... I think David Foerster's comment gives the actual answer to this question!

3:51 PM
PPAs are repositories, but the dupe suggestion is totally wrong. Unlike Ubuntu's official repositories, some PPAs exist to provide the latest version of software, and it's reasonable to ask why the boost-latest PPA appears not to, and that is in no way answered by explaining why the default repos don't have it. I've commented.

oh thank you... yes I meant I don't think of PPA's as official Ubuntu repositories which is what that post is about

@Zanna Should I... write separate comments to ping all of them?

@EliahKagan haha I don't know!

@Zanna I had voted to close it as unclear. But that didn't end up happening. Enough time might have passed that the system would allow me to cast a close vote again. But if it actually is clear, and it's just that I don't understand it, then I don't want to do that.

Q: How To Install Gnome Desktop on ubuntu 12.04 lts?

JattttI have ubuntu 12.04 lts and I Want To Know That of there is a way by which i can have a desktop like this one in the photo: This In Not Gnome Classic. I dont want Gnome Classic

any particular reason you want to edit that @Zanna?
It's pretty much a dead stub now

hmm... compulsive editing hindered by annoying lock?
general obsessiveness?
irrational hatred of Random Title Case?
sorry...

I'd rather not unlock it because I'd really have to lock it again after your edits, but I don't have access to a lock that doesn't leave a banner lock reason. A good thing, but not in this case.
@Zanna Don't be. Just wanted to understand your reasoning/make sure I'm not missing something.

ok :)

No.
I'd say it would have been a slight improvement if it didn't move "can" in the second bullet point.

agreed

(I'm not sure which of the various ever-edited things I'm saying you're agreeing with. :)

btw thanks for your edit to my answer there... I was cycling up a large hill earlier worrying that or, these days, Wayland sounded like everything had become Wayland. When I went to fix it, I found it had been fixed!

No problem.

7:41 PM
(I think it was an improvement to decapitalise the bullet points, but making the second point into a question sets my SAT grammar sense tingling)

Yes, making (just) it a question is no good.

8:09 PM
I'm inclined to approve (or improve) this edit. What do you think? As far as I know, the issues it addresses are near universal when people start using reptyr on most GNU/Linux systems including Ubuntu. I certainly faced them.

oh yes I would approve that edit... or improve it to indent the line that's blockquoted and use echo 0 | sudo tee instead of sudo su -
(or at least add an exit)

well I did it...

Thanks! (I was occupied, going through messages and selecting -- hopefully -- just the ones appropriate for moving.)

I thought so

Are they partially attempting to give a solution? Should they be advised to split it into an answer and separate question? It looks like they're not trying to give an answer, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, that kinda confused me as well. The question speaks about wodim, but they mention using sudo cdrecord. I dunno if cdrecord is a different software, which does work, but wodim doesn't.

They are different commands, yes, and I think running cdrecord directly may be a reasonable workaround. So I am reluctant to flag it.

Ah, k. Perhaps an edit would fix it.

I think that, even this close to the release, this question is probably off-topic (as about a problem with Ubuntu+1).

This question doesn't seem like a duplicate (of the suggested target) to me.
