@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez ahh! cocinando... yo soy muy monotono para eso
@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez alguna opcion 2?

voy a ver si empiezo :-)

@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez bon appetit

@PeterTamaroff I think it's a stupid movie.

5:07 AM
@PeterTamaroff By contradiction, if $y > \limsup A$, then $y$ cannot be a limit point! Since, there will exists a $\delta$ such that $S_{\delta}(y)$ will not have any $a \in A$, because if it does, then there are infinitely more $a\in A$ (for every $\delta$) and hence $a> \limsup A$ for infinitely many $\delta$ which is a contradiction.

5:31 AM
@BenjaLim Dude, I told you so!!!. (I know its not polite, but had to do it!! :P :P)
23 hours ago, by Jayesh Badwaik
@BenjaLim The guy is going through his first chapter in Artin, and you gave him endomorphisms!

6:25 AM
Hmmm

I think I remember seeing a post here, where educating PhD student how to teach was discussed. I think I remember that someone mentioned there that in "his young days" they simply told them to teach and they did so. (Without being taught a special course about pedagogy or having to hand out an essay on this.) And many people gave interesting comments related to this type of courses there.
I believe it was here or at MO. (But I can be wrong - it might have been a blog or an article.)
Does anyone remember something like this?
The only related thing I was able to find was this MO thread: Teaching a pedagogy course

@MartinSleziak Hey

Morning.
OldJohn mentioned that he was watching England match yesterday.

Cool
I remember seeing that post aswell, but I can not find it either.

Now I see that Argentina defeated Uruguay - that's good news for Mariano and Peter Tamaroff, I guess.

6:37 AM
The logarithmic identity $\log A + \log B = \log AB$ only holds when $A\wedge B>0$ right?

Well $\log$ (as real function) is only defined for positive arguments, so you need $A>0$ and $B>0$. Otherwise the equality does not make sense.
If you are asking about complex logarithm, I know almost nothing about complex analysis :-(

Yeah
Just a friend asked me about an integral, and I have some problems justifying the steps to him
$$ \int_{-\sqrt{2}\:\:}^{-1} \frac{2z^2-1}{z}\,\mathrm{d}z $$

Substitution $u=z^2$ should change this to rational function.
I believe.
Or $t=2z^2-1$.

im so bored

Yeah, otherwise you have to justify the addition of negative logarithms.

user19161
6:44 AM
@MartinSleziak Probably, though some want their home team to lose.

I don't see anything bad about that. If someone is a fan of team from different country (or no fan at all), I don't see any harm.
Welcome to MSE morning sport's special.

can i think of a naive set as a cloud of objects zooming around

Qiaochu ignores me. Can anyone else help me?

7:36 AM
I have no doubt that some local knot-theorist will have a look at it.
Unfortunately, I am not knot-theorist.

Hello everybody!
Is there anybody who uses Matlab?

1:31 PM
@Nimza I have used it in past, but haven't used for a while. Also, it is a very big resource, so if you want to ask something area specific, I might not be able to help.

@JayeshBadwaik I have a problem with gif animations. I post exactly an example from the internet but it doesn't work

can you link me to it?

1 sec
@JayeshBadwaik I post an example that is on right of ">>" symbols

Error in ==> gif_add_frame at 53
A = getframe(h);
Are you getting this error?

no
I have no error, but output gif file consists of a single frame

1:36 PM
Okay.
ohh
just a sec
let me test it myself

hm. new frames are really added (size of file changes)

I am getting a rotating sphere
colored in light blue and yelllow

in gif or only in program?

in gif

oh...

1:45 PM

@Nimza you might want to use imwrite to make a gif from the program.

@JayeshBadwaik and even "movie" command doesn't work. I think I have some problems with matlab

@Nimza Hmm. Which version do you have? (I am on 7.12.0 R2011a)

@JayeshBadwaik 2011b

@Nimza So on a more recent version than me. Hmm. Strange.

1:49 PM
very strange... I used such functions some years ago

Hi @robjohn

@JayeshBadwaik I'll try to change render

@Nimza Hmm. Yup, probably that might help.

@JayeshBadwaik epic win!

@Nimza render problem?

1:59 PM
@JayeshBadwaik yes, I've changed OpenGL to painters

@Nimza Ohh. Good! Gosh, how subtle can a problem be! I would haven't got that by myself.

3:13 PM
@RajeshD Hi there. Sorry, I had to leave. I'm back for a bit.

@robjohn Weekend blues?

@RajeshD No, this week has been bad. One of our friends is in the hospital with complications due to cancer. My wife has been to the hospital for about 10 hours a day and I have been at our friend's house for 10 hours a day feeding and watching her dogs. That leaves us a few hours (after I walk our dog) to see each other.

@robjohn sorry to see such a thing. Hope things get better for your friend.

3:28 PM
Hello!!!
@Jayesh

@Charlie hi. Just back from a walk.

@JayeshBadwaik Hi!Good!
@JayeshBadwaik id you sleep well?

@Charlie yup.

:D

4:37 PM
How do people wrap their heads around recursive programming?

Is main down?

@PeterTamaroff Yup. I could not even login for some time.
@Charlie ??

@PeterTamaroff "Read Only mode" it says.
So yes.

@Argon They think of recursive programming in terms of recursive programming.

I'm getting "Server Error in '/' Application.

Runtime Error

Description: An exception occurred while processing your request. Additionally, another exception occurred while executing the custom error page for the first exception. The request has been terminated. "

4:41 PM
@PeterTamaroff Refreshed the page, that's what I got too.

Gotta go

@JayeshBadwaik Umm... Thanks?
Bye

@JayeshBadwaik what?I'm happy that you slept well

@Charlie Hey Marilia!

@Argon wassup Aaron?

4:43 PM
@Argon :P :P I just gave you a tautology.

@Charlie Not much.

@Argon why?

@Charlie My life is rather uneventful.
Which, mind you, is not necessarily a bad thing!

@Argon it happens

@PeterTamaroff About 15 min ago the mainpage was in read-only mode, and a bit before that it was down with a "server maintenance" message. The blog says the admins expect chaos (due to whatever they're doing with the servers).

4:53 PM
@anon Ok.

Back to read only mode....
And now "We are currently offline for maintenance"

hehe

... and back to the runtime error.
And now read only mode...

Aaron

Yes?

5:07 PM
what's wrong?

Its funny that the site status changes so quickly
By the way:

Q: Defining the derivative without limits

Ben CrowellThese days, the standard way to present differential calculus is by introducing the Cauchy-Weierstrass definition of the limit. One then defines the derivative as a limit, proves results like the Leibniz and chain rules, and uses this machinery to differentiate some simple functions such as polyn...

@Argon interesting.

Looks like the site is back to normal!

Taht's the way ,uhuhu I like it...

Hahaha!

5:22 PM
I'm so glad that I'm a woman

@Charlie And why is that?

@Argon it's a song...

@Charlie Didn't know!
:)

Can anyone figure out why my Wolframalpha link on the word "graph" in this answer doesn't render?

@HenningMakholm I changed it to a regular style link.
If that's okay. Strange indeed.

5:27 PM
@HenningMakholm It is rendering for me.

@JayeshBadwaik That's after Argon's edit, right?

@HenningMakholm Yup. (Did not notice that.)
All links are rendering properly.
Even the older ones.

@HenningMakholm I think I see why. Markdown doesn't like the '^' in the link.
@HenningMakholm I changed it back to inline style, changing the '^' to '**'.
Hi @JasperLoy!

user19161
@Argon Hey! How was the chemistry quiz?

5:37 PM
@JasperLoy Okay

@Argon Oh, that. I've seen that before. But I think in that case it used to refuse to recognize the link markup at all and just display it all as text, brackets and URL included. (Usually I just percent-encode the caret to %5e). Thanks for the help.

I have another one on Tuesday

Argon chemistry must either be very dull or really exciting.

@HenningMakholm Right now... Its quite dull.
stoichiometry

"1 mole of argon makes one mole of argon gas". Yes, that' sounds dull.

5:49 PM
@Argon another...?

@Charlie Yes. I just had a quiz, a test, another quiz three days in a row, and now another quiz on Tuesday and Friday.
@HenningMakholm Exactly. Molar mass, etc.

@Argon Quizfest

:)

@Argon ow..that's boring

But I had to go to Wikipedia for the answer to the only other possible question on that quiz.

5:51 PM
@HenningMakholm That's really cool!!
"This chemical was synthesized by mixing argon and hydrogen fluoride on a caesium iodide surface at −265 °C, and exposing the mixture to ultraviolet radiation. This caused the gases to combine."

Yes. Brrrr...

I have a question for whoever can answer: If I take $m$ steps with the probabilities $N,W,S,E$ of taking a step north, west, south and east respectively, what is the chance of me ending up in the spot i started?

@Argon is this true?

@Charlie Hahaha! Unfortunately, yes.

:P

6:02 PM
In fact, there's an old joke about how there are two seasons - winter and roadwork!

6:15 PM
Did you know that as of April 2010 mathematicians had found only 35 even numbers that are not the sum of the two primes in a Twin Prime pair?
Did you know that statistical properties dictated by Benford's Law are used in auditing of financial accounts as one means of detecting fraud?

6:29 PM
@Argon Why are there so many quizzes?

@JasperLoy Annoying teacher?
She has a PhD!

user19161
@Argon Those mean nothing.

@JasperLoy Its intimidating!

@Jasper How are you????

user19161
@Charlie Same. Why are there four question marks?

6:32 PM
@JasperLoy just because.why?i can't?

user19161
@Argon Hmm, maybe she should combine the two quizzes into one, then you can get it over and done with.

user19161
@jayesh Guess what? I took a photo on my phone and tried unsuccessfully to transfer it to my Linux machine via USB or bluetooth. I think I will change back to my old phone, the new one really sucks.

@JasperLoy Or may be you should try learning about the new phone!!

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, I might do that. But I don't know why they make it so unintuitive. And it does not come with a comprehensive manual. For example, I find GNOME very intuitive, but KDE isn't.

@JasperLoy Intuition is subjective.

6:37 PM
but modern cellphones are very intuitive

@Charlie I think the same.
my dad however doesn't think so.

user19161
@JayeshBadwaik Yes, like perception of whether someone loves you or not.

@JasperLoy Or like humor.

@JasperLoy that kind of "Human intuiton" sucks but intelectual, never

@Charlie yeah

user19161
6:41 PM
@Charlie Cellphones are not intellectual.

@JayeshBadwaik :DDD

@JasperLoy They are, you just need a different gauge to measure their intelligence.

Is WolframAlpha making manual integration obsolete?

@Argon eerr...

@Charlie I met someone yesterday who told me this (in essence). This bothered me, as you would expect.

6:48 PM
well,I don't think so
we still have to integrate.

user19161
@Argon Obsolete in the sense that all integrals can be evaluated with it. Not obsolete in any other way.

At least I don't know about the future

@Argon Nope. What if internet is down?

user19161
Integration is after all a mostly intellectual activity. Such activities will never be obsolete.

@PeterTamaroff End of the world?

user19161
6:50 PM
@PeterTamaroff One can get the software installed!

@JasperLoy But that costs money.

@JasperLoy Luckily for me, WolframAlpha cannot evaluate everything!

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Oops, I forgot to say "Pedro!" =)

@PeterTamaroff free software

@Charlie Is it?

user19161
6:51 PM
@Charlie Is WA free?

@Charlie Mathematica isn't free.

user19161
It is interesting that Wikipedia and Wolfram Alpha start with W and end with A.

And now they have that "Pro" thing.

there can be all types of freesoftware to do whatever you wanna.

@JasperLoy It is interesting Tea and Tequila both start with T and end with A?

6:53 PM
@PeterTamaroff That annoyed me, as it stopped me from being able to ask for more execution time and other features!

@Gigili Yo.

W|A can be stumped: wolframalpha.com/input/…

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Yes. It is also interesting that Pedro and piano start with P and end with O.

@JasperLoy Meh.

6:54 PM
Hullio, Peter.

@Argon Soon you might find yourself obsoleted. might

@JayeshBadwaik Slowly, that seems to be true!

W|A is a start I say.

We all will get obsolet.We're gonna die and be replaced by robots

@Charlie I think I saw a Twilight Zone episode like that...

6:59 PM
Umm... New people, new ripple.

Answer is $\frac{4-\pi}{2}$

Main site "offline for maintenance" again ...

@HenningMakholm You had some quote about metadata on your profile page. Its not there now. What was it? I forget the exact wording.

7:14 PM
@JayeshBadwaik I think you must be confusing me with someone else. I don't remember every putting quotes (about metadata or anything else) in my SE profiles.

@HenningMakholm Works for me.

@HenningMakholm Okay. Hmm. Probably. Sorry.

@PeterTamaroff Yes, it's up again.

7:27 PM
@JayeshBadwaik What is $S_\delta(y)$?

@PeterTamaroff Jayesh went to sleep about 20 min ago

@Charlie Bleh

user19161
7:50 PM
@PeterTamaroff Bleh seems to be your favourite word. I learnt it from you.

@JasperLoy It is an onomatopoeia

@JasperLoy WE learn a lot in here.
@busman Hola!
@PeterTamaroff but i still didn't understand why you used it...

user19161
@Charlie There are many things in the world beyond our understanding.

@JasperLoy yes...
@jasper Are you ok?
Benjamin Franklin I hate you!
that's bullying

8:23 PM
@Charlie Holap, do we know each other?

@busman no, pero Hola!¿cómo estás?

@ch
agh, oh, ok, ¿no es un poco feo no hablar en inglés?

nadie habla por el momento... es que a veces me pregunto por qué he aprendido español ... a mi me gusta recordar...

Ah, ¿el castellano no es tu idioma materno?

@busman no no

8:29 PM
okok, ya veo
¿Y dónde lo has aprendido?

@busman escuela

¿Una escuela que está en...?

es malo, yo lo sé
@busman Brasil

ahm! entao também falas português!

@busman Si
muy bien
:P

8:31 PM
Pues mira, mi portugués es probablemente tan malo como tu castellano

@busman hehehe
Spanish is not my fav language...I start speaking spanish ,when i see it's portuguese...
portunhol

Neither is mine
portunhol? I guess it happens to me but the other way arround, and it ends being espangués

@busman yeah yeah it's a creepy thing

So, what do people chat about in here? I'm still exploring the site
I was so desperate looking for some proof to a certain proposition that I ended here by chance, I since then I'm loving the site

@busman math, programming, nothing at all, jokes, music, math stuff, our math vision of the world, personal things...
@busman It's a lovely place

8:37 PM
It looks like so
I'm affraid everybody is a doctor with his/her ultra-difficult ph. D. and then I might look like an idiot every time I mistake something, which happens most of the time

@busman relax,we all feel the same

phew...

user19161
@Charlie What is Benjamin Franklin doing there?

@busman Liked what you said:spanish is not your native language?I can see.

Spanish is one of my two native languajes, actually
*languages

8:42 PM
@JasperLoy motherfucker !had to invent:daylight saving time...
@busman so what is the other?

catalan
you know about catalan?

hmm
@busman heard in school...
@Jasper why you don't talk to me?

Well, in the mediterranean coast of Spain, from the French border up to Alicante, more or less, plus the Balearic Islands and a bit of southern France, there is a tongue called catalan, spoken by nearly 10 milion people
It takes its name from Catalonia, the region whose capital is based in Barcelona

user19161
@Charlie Hmm, I have nothing to say now.

@busman Fascinating!
@JasperLoy you never have something to say to me...

user19161
8:47 PM
Hello @arete! Do you have any suggestions for someone who can't ride a bicycle after trying 9000 times?

You know, all this brazilian players who ended playing for Barcelona like, say, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Dani Alves and other often learn a bit of catalan in here

user19161
@Charlie Haha, but when I do, it might surprise you!

@busman amazing..considering the fact that they barely speak portuguese...
@JasperLoy know...

yeah, actually they barely speak nothing

user19161
@Charlie I heard the google translator in voice form. Portuguese sounds very exotic!

8:48 PM
@busman you said everything
@JasperLoy it's a sexy language
it's like an angel's voice

user19161
@Charlie OK, so it is like me.

@JasperLoy Portuguese sounds great, with I guess Google translator uses portuguese accent, which is quite different from brazilian one

@busman no it's brazilian.I saw the woman

e muito "diferenchi"

in a talk show

8:50 PM
ah, great then

ora poish poish
@JasperLoy portuguese is even more

you know, "ell's" in catalan sound like they do in portugal portuguese

@busman hmm interesting nice to know about these languages!

:P

user19161
Is Catalan a variation of Spanish?

8:52 PM
So, what math fields do you people are into, if there's any?

@JasperLoy what will surprise me, Mr.Loy?

@JasperLoy Nope, is a completely separate language, like portuguese and french are

user19161
@Charlie Hey don't call me L, call me J. Well, that is my secret! But it is not something I have told you before...

@busman I'm undergraduate level

They obviously have parenthood, since both come from ancient latin, but in some ways catalan is closer to French than it is to Spanisj

user19161
8:54 PM
@busman I know Carerras likes to sing Catalan songs.

@JasperLoy J , J , J... what will you tell me?

user19161
I find Spanish and Italian very similar. In speech form it is hard to differentiate between them if you don't speak either.

@JasperLoy Yep, he does, since it is his mother language; and it also was Pau Casal's (the sing of the birds)

user19161
@Charlie Hmm, that's up to your imagination for now.

To speak italian you just need to move your hands
@JasperLoy I dunno if my imagination goes that far...

8:55 PM
Italian is quite different from spanish, in fact

user19161
@Charlie What does that mean?

@JasperLoy Italian people, including descendants, like myself, have the habit to talk moving their hands.It's basically a joke

user19161
@Charlie You are part Italian? Cool. Italian is the most beautiful language to me.

@JasperLoy yep.
I prefer portuguese

user19161
@Charlie Nessun Dorma.

8:59 PM
@JasperLoy Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All'alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!
