8:00 PM
(Dang but I am cynical :/ )

i feel like there are two different cultures with regard to grad students, there is the "take everything easy and once you're 30 think about finishing your phd" kind of attitude and the "if you aren't willing to do 90 hour weeks then what are you even doing here?" atmosphere
an old roommate once told me about a email that was circulating in chemistry circles, somebody in some lab got a mail from his professor asking him what he thought he was doing not coming in on sundays like everybody else

Yeah.

Does anyone know cool applications of functional calculus?

The attitude I've really come to question is the notion that your work/research should be your life
I'd much rather have a career that gives me the scope to define my life
So the notion that you should find a career where you "do what you love" doesn't make sense to me anymore

I'd definitely push back against the singular dedication that they ask for but I would say to choose a career based on enjoyment at least in part
Ideally, you're not just spending blah hours and getting compensated and then finally enjoying yourself, you'd mostly have a good time while working
Almost surely naive but it's at least good to try

8:11 PM
I think that as long as you have a good job the enjoyment of your life depends mostly on other factors.

Maybe you should consider changing your name to Semicynical?:P
Just kidding. I haven't even read everything. I had to catch a bus

damn, you must be really strong
don't you mean a usb?

snaps eyy

Lol omg it took me too long @Jorge

...

8:14 PM
"Semicynical". I approve

Are you implying I can't catch a bus because I'm a girl? Pfft

My question is who threw the bus? :P

Hahahhahahahah

No !! At least in my country most grown men are unable to catch buses properly.

Oh shit I laughed in the metro. While staring at my phone

8:17 PM
Only human - Bus
Only bus - Trinity

Kek @Sha, is that not supposed to happen?

Lol its aWkwArD

So you caught a sub now?
that's even more impressive

Lol yes. I'm a strong woman. And someone keeps throwing vehicles at me

unless its of the bread variety

8:20 PM
@Semiclassical petition for rename

Hahahhahahahahhahahah

@Sha literally kek'd

Jorge you are my new hero

the gymnopedies are beautiful

Yeah :)

@Daminark sup Amin?

Not much, how about you?

@MikeMiller hmmmm

8:28 PM
I had a week to study for an exam that takes place tomorrow and the time vanished into thin air.
for some reason I started to build a raspberry pi network around my house and didn't study at all :'(

Yeah I do that far too often as well
Well, not specifically raspberry pi so much as, I played so much Left 4 Dead in finals week

I watched beauty tutorials in my finals week:P while I don't even have make up

An obligatory remark: Procrastinators, unite!...tomorrow

Yeah, really though
I have done shit all today

It suddenly got verrry interesting:p now not anymore

8:30 PM
Nice
Right now I'm in a bit of a loop about reading the news

@Semi is that loop nullhomotopic?

Or, well, reading about the main story today i.e. the D.C. shooting

@Semiclassical yeah, it's definitely an inefficiency in the construction of the squares themselves irregardless of the type of surface.

I was just saying in the other room that my new OS gives me the shittest news from all over the world

@BalarkaSen what is that new OS?

8:32 PM
what is OS?
operating system?

@JorgeFernándezHidalgo omega sans
it's quite comical.

@TheGreatDuck google doesn't bring up anything relevant

@JorgeFernándezHidalgo google.com/…

I really hope everyone involved comes out okay, both because of general humanity but also because I worry how dire the political impact could be

yes, operating system. windows 10 has a custom news tab on my toolbar

8:34 PM
@JorgeFernándezHidalgo I believe balarka just got windows 10.
Don't listen to duck.

yeah, I figured it was obvious as a joke.
I should've cranked up the dripping sarcasm

have you tried arch linux?

This is the kind of incident that can produce some pretty ugly things

8:36 PM
@Semiclassical i made a cube. Now I literally have what looks like a cube of blocks.

♫the reichstag fire♫

Yes, it's very upsetting @Semiclassical

@Jorge i don't do linux

Granted, i find this form of stuff far more intriguing than trying to make a 3D cube grid version. With this it actually feels a bit more realistic as a 3D version.

8:37 PM
Heyoo

besides, now I have an excuse to not code crappy jumping physics. XD

@MikeMiller This is a random thing to see when entering chat

Any idea how to show this?
$$ \sum_{k=0}^\infty \arctan \left( \frac{1}{F_{2k+1}} \right) = \frac{\pi}{2}$$

@Daminark How are you

$F_k=?$

8:39 PM
Fibonacci

fibonacci probablly

I'm alright, how about you?

Thought so. Nifty

arctan(x) + arctan(y) = arctan(x + y/(1 - xy)), right?

The most use I ever got out of fibonacci

8:40 PM
@Daminark Ask me again next week! That's when I find out about UWO!

Alright, fingers crossed! :D

:D

was when dealing hands of 12 cards i gave them in the a pattern 1 1 2 3 5

Western Ontario?

what's sum_{k=0}^infty 1/F_{2k+1}

8:41 PM
@Semiclassical Right.

@BalarkaSen 3

Remember the document we found on the lambert w. function

@BalarkaSen that does seem like the right tool to employ

what's prod_{k=0}^infty 1/F_{2k+1}

@BalarkaSen 1.824515157

8:42 PM
@Balarka you can write $F_n$ as $a x^n + b y^n$ for $x$ and $y$ some numbers like $1\pm\sqrt5/4$ or something

On that note, about an hour or two ago I got to talk to my advisor

@Mike lies

@Semiclassical I hope it went well!
Hello, Akiva.

And a lot of it was me quite eagerly (and happily relevantly) explaining what the Lambert-W function was

Actually I'm probably going to end up with arctan(infinity) lol
if I do it using my approach

8:43 PM
yeah

@BalarkaSen Yes

@MikeMiller it seems like all of the gymopedies should be played together.
@Semiclassical :D that's awesome haha.

@Dodsy I prefer #1 or #3. I forget which

And why it probably explained why the results of another paper seemed so strange

I know that Debussy swapped them whenever he orchestrated it
Which irritates me

8:44 PM
I tried to use the sum formula for the arctangent function, but to no avail

@MikeMiller Why?

On the math side, anyways

gymnopedie #1 is my fav

On the physics side...eh, I dunno yet

Hm :/

8:44 PM
because i can never fucking remember which is which because of him

Debussy rocks.
Claire de lune is a timeless classic.

My advisor had some thoughts in that direction so we'll see where that leads

@Semiclassical Well, it sounds like you really know your stuff about it, and only good things can come from that!

Hope so

8:47 PM
apparently 384 blocks is actually quite slow at runtime
dayum

la cathedrale engloutie @dodsy, that's my fav debussy

But that's research for you. "It wouldn't be research if we knew what we were doing."

I hate this ^
I have this now

@Krijn Your question had a sudden burst of attention
I saw in MO

And I hate it
@BalarkaSen I have a comment now, and 7 upvotes

8:50 PM
You don't like fame? huh

Somebody added the AG-tag, which was stupid of me not to do
The 'fame' consists of a counterexample which makes the problem now even harder

Yikes!

can you remind me what F_1 is
in the fib sequence
F_0 = F_1 = 1?

1 I think

Ugh, conventions
But that's the convention I know as well

8:53 PM
@BalarkaSen if you use arctan addition on two successive terms you get $$\pi + \arctan\left(-\frac{F_{2k-1}+F_{2k+1}}{F_{2k}^2}\right);$$ i don't know if that's useful

Oye que pasa

So that $(1-x-x^2)^{-1}$ is the ordinary generating function

$F_0$ is $0$, isn't it?

I just know it goes 1, 2, 3, 5, ...

Yeah, otherwise a bunch of theorems don't work nicely

8:53 PM
that shit matters

You want $F_0=0$

ok well, F_1 = 1
@BalarkaSen so this is probably completely useless lol
o well

I wish I knew as much math as you guys do.
one day hopefully!

it doesn't make you any happier, in the end

no?

8:55 PM
True but I refute hedonism

:(

hm
there is a diference between happiness and pleasure and self indulgence.

"I have that hole beneath my floors, remember?"

this fibonacci problem is too hard

Why were we talking about Fibonacci?
What's the problem? I just came here

8:56 PM
@AkivaWeinberger guy was a genius

Sum problem

@Dodsy I feel like they are all interconnected

Just some problem?

and I hate that

I guess so, maybe.

8:57 PM
Yes, sum problem

Genusssucht

sum arctan(1/F_{2k+1}), @AkivaWeinberger

oddly, whenever I google a definition, it translates to German.

@Semiclassical Reminds me: "And this over here is the West Bank, divided into two areas. This one is Judea." "Oh, and what's the other one?" "Eh, some area"
$\sum\arctan(1/F_{2k+1})$

I'd have preferred: "Not Judea "

8:58 PM
I don't get it?

@Semiclassical it's a joke on sumeria

But it's Judea and Samaria. Samaria <-> some area

oops
not sumeria

8:59 PM
Well, Sumeria is different, but yeah

Ich mag dich.

sumeria isn't a place

That joke is too difficult for me

I was doing a different joke

i dont think

8:59 PM
Oh. Is it like Canadia then

in spanish its sumeria

i think the region is just called sumer
