@HenningMakholm why not? ah, I see. yes, it is rather a kernel. you're right
for each fixed $x$ it gives a measure on $C$
what if the solution is not unique - if there is at least one measure? it smells like the use of AC
sorry, I had to be away for 5 minutes
ah, seems to be too late

That's odd. When I look at the room info, it looks as if there is a message flagged as being spam/abusive, but when I click on the highlighted number, it tells me there are none, but even after refreshing, it is still telling me there is one message flagged.

odd it is
@Rob: would you take a look on my problem?

@Ilya If you have AC you can find a direct-sum complement to the eigenspace corresponding to the zero eigenvalue, and then just declare that your f must come from there. (Just choose a basis for the eigenspace, and extend that to a basis for the full space).

@HenningMakholm I rather talking about existence of the measure

@Ilya Yes, but with the restriction to the direct-sum complement of the kernel I would think you get a measure (or a family of measures) in the same way as before.
Without AC, well that is Asaf's balliwick...

9:17 PM
@Henning: thanks. the point is the following: when the solution is unique it usually happens that the measure is not even $\sigma$-finite
while if it's not unique maybe there may exist the finite or a $\sigma$-finite one
anyway, I can ask this question on the main now

@Ilya which problem?
the one above?

@Rob: starting from this message

Hm, one of my unexplained downvotes went away.

@HenningMakholm is it bad? ))

I heard my name.

9:23 PM
@Ilya No, it's not bad. But 1 and 2 downvotes are equivalent in terms of ability to reach 200 before the clock strikes midnight :-)

@AsafKaragila could you take a look on my problem, starting from here. I wonder if the measure exists without using the AC

@Ilya Did you get an answered to your question about Bill and QED? chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3139401#3139401

@Skullpatrol no. I asked you

@Ilya So what is the question that remains. What did Henning not answer?

does the measure exist without assuming AC

9:32 PM
@Ilya Basically, Bill lost all his reputation points and QED deleted his account.

@skull which Bill and what are the reasons?

@Ilya I'm not sure.

@Ilya I thought that Henning suggested solving $\mathscr{A}f=1_B$ and letting $f(c_0)$ be the measure of $B$.

@Ilya Well. I'm quite unfocused. I am not sure how the measure is defined.

Does that require AC?

9:35 PM
For me to be focused? No... just the headache is really flaring today.

Killers may apply here: math.stackexchange.com/q/103706. Thanks, Asaf.

@robjohn if the solution is non-unique, we have to arrange somehow $f(c_0)$ for different $B$, don't we?
@AsafKaragila sorry about your headache. I will ask the question on the main, you may want to answer it there

Sure. It will be less cluttered I could get through to it.

@Ilya Oh, I thought you said that $0$ was not an eigenvalue.

9:41 PM
@Rob: wth happened to Bill?

@Ilya You don't know about his suspension?

This account is temporarily suspended to cool down. The suspension period ends on Feb 22 at 9:47.

@Srivatsan: honestly, no

@Ilya He was suspended for 30 days for being uncivil. There's a (extremely not very pretty) meta thread somewhere.

@Ilya He is still on temporary leave until late February.

9:42 PM

but what was the reason for the suspension? being uncivil? Bill?

@Ilya just ping me when you post the question.

@Ilya See Zev's answer for that. para 3 beginning.

@Asaf: sure, get well

@Ilya Apparently some of the comments in question have been deleted since.

9:44 PM
@Ilya Without uniqueness or some further structure that allows us to generate an element of $[B]$, then I don't see how to do it without AC.

@HenningMakholm Exactly one. If you are willing to trust my memory, that is.

A propos of all that, I think 30 days is excessive for a second-offense "cool down" period -- but it won't do to start a formal discussion about making the standard progression less Draconian before the instant case has mooted itself.

I find it annoying that the comments were intentionally deleted, and then it is claimed that we don't know all the facts because some comments were deleted. Isn't it possible to establish a protocol where a permanent copy of the deleted comments is kept for future reference?
7

@Ilya Oh, I doubt that... but you know, thanks and whatnot.

@AsafKaragila What's up?

9:48 PM
@MattN Raging headache for the past 24 hours.

@AsafKaragila Paracetamol?

@Srivatsan second it

@Srivatsan True dat. I'm becoming progressively skeptical about the internet standard of dealing with spam/offensive stuff by deleting it without a trace. A button saying "click here to see some trash that was deleted, but please don't try to respond to it here" ought to be just as effective.

@Srivatsan Excellent idea!!

@MattN That stopped helping my headache about 12 years ago.

9:49 PM
@AsafKaragila Ibuprofen?

@Brian: Didn't you say yesterday you're gonna add something to the AC permutations question?

@AsafKaragila in fact not only ibuprofen but any analgetic would work. e.g. analgin

@MattN Never really helped either.

@AsafKaragila Aspirin?
Never mind. You'll say that won't help either. : )

It's not too common in Israel, so I am not sure which generic pill is the street name for that here.

9:51 PM
@AsafKaragila ask you girlfriend for a massage of the neck (not kidding)

@AsafKaragila Have you tried to sleep it off?

@AsafKaragila You'll want acetylsalicylic acid.

@Srivatsan I've seen smth a bit worse than Bill's comments, but although I've found it offensive I never tagged it as that

Thanks, Ilya, Henning, and Skullpatrol. But, with full public sympathy for moderators in this issue, I don't think such a proposal (in meta) would be very welcome. Just being frank... =)

Everyone should stop suggesting me ways to deal with my headache. I had it for 13 years now and I know enough about it. Thanks for the concern though.

9:53 PM
@MattN That's aspirin!

@HenningMakholm I hope Matt knows it )

@AsafKaragila Eventually, but I may not get to it right away; the details are actually a bit messy.

@HenningMakholm Yes. He said he didn't know.

Which details?

@Ilya To be fair, one comment of Bill was deleted. I don't remember what it said or whether it was offensive.

9:53 PM
@AsafKaragila next time you have a headache you'll think twice before sharing this information with us ))

@AsafKaragila Converting the basic idea to a real proof.

@Srivatsan I think the non-deleted ones are offensive enough to ban him for a month.

@Srivatsan: not only his - so I don't see the clear picture at all

@Ilya What's next time? It's still the same time. :\

@Ilya No, I am quite sure all of P's comments are still intact.

9:54 PM
@BrianMScott Well, only because you let it become messy.

@AsafKaragila Sleep is an excellent way to over come any pain in general, it is not a cure but it helps you deal with it.

@AsafKaragila Migrane? Or drink induced?

@MattN Well, even if I agreed that suspension is inevitable, I do not know what time period would be appropriate.

@MattN Neither. I have an idiopathic and constant headache for the past 13 years, believe it or not. Drinking actually helps, even the part when I'm hungover helps to cope with the usual pain.

@AsafKaragila Have you seen a specialist?

9:59 PM
Cap!

Congrats!

Nice, Henning.

@Srivatsan Why is what has been set as a rule not appropriate?

@Srivatsan: now, is it somehow related to QED? I heard (s)he has deleted an account

@Skullpatrol Come on now, how would you expect someone who has had symptoms for 13 years and knows the word "idiopathic" not to have seen a depressingly long succession of doctors about them?

10:00 PM
@Srivatsan He brought it on himself. I feel zero pity and zero loss.

@HenningMakholm Are you talking about me?

@MattN Oh yes. The rules.

@AsafKaragila Um, yes.

@Ilya No, that is a different story.

@HenningMakholm Ok, dumb question.

10:02 PM
@MattN This rule is inappropriate in my view because I think a rule of shorter suspensions would lead to the same benefits for the community with less ill effects.

@HenningMakholm Oh.

@Srivatsan: smth weird or just deleted and that's it?

@Ilya Something between yoda (a moderator in gardening.SE) and QED. It's not really clear what happened, but something yoda said was taken very badly by QED. The relevant comments are removed from the chat transcript now, so you will find very little trace suggesting anything awful happened.

I'm a bit dissapointed with the stuff happened here since my last visits in December
@Srivatsan: strange, QED was himself moderate

@HenningMakholm But there aren't that many offenders. And there are even less offenders that are valuable to the community. How many "valuable" contributors are there that are at the same time repeat offenders?

10:05 PM
@Ilya Oh, well, he was quite upset then. Swearing for some time. Then asked his account to be deleted in his profile page. That's it.

hm

Actually, I was planning to stay out of the Bill case. But it never seems to stop. There is so much fuss about it.

well, I'll watch Mortal Kombat and go to a bed

Wait!
Didn't you post a question?

@Ilya Good night.

10:06 PM
@MattN I'm not sure if I can see the argument you imply here. How does the number of valuable contributors that are repeat offenders (where "repeat" means "caught the attention of moderators at least twice over the site's lifetime") impact my argument?

@AsafKaragila no, tomorrow. sleep well
@MattN good night ;)

Drats!

@HenningMakholm If there is only one of them then the negative effects of the current rule are negligible.

I won't be here tomorrow most of the day!

G’night, @Ilya.

10:07 PM
Post it during the evening, like 19'ish or so!

Great plan. =) // Oh, sorry. I thought it got something to do with capping; that you wanted to answer it in a new SE day...

@MattN Why? Who says the negative effects are only tied to contributors that satisfy some arbitrary threshold of valuableness? Which positive effects of the current length of suspensions do you see?

@Srivatsan Whose plan?

@HenningMakholm I'm thinking of users who generally abuse the site rather than contribute at all.
@HenningMakholm But let's drop this. I really don't want to waste any more characters on BD.

@AsafKaragila Ignore that. (Or see my previous message for an explanation.) =)

10:11 PM
I see. I love it when a plan comes together!

@MattN Neither do I -- that's why I think the discussion of what the default rules ought to be should be had after BD's suspension expires, such that it won't be derailed by people getting the impression that it's about getting him pardoned.

@HenningMakholm Good.

@HenningMakholm Good idea.

@Srivatsan Very good idea.;-)

@HenningMakholm I don't yet know what your suggestion will be. But I'm in favour of a sentence growing longer and longer. If someone doesn't learn from one week of punishment I don't get the point of punishing them for another week. Maybe it could be two, 4, 8, etc. weeks.

10:16 PM
@Skull good idea
to support recursion

I don't see any benefit in having users that needlessly attack others with spite and insult.

@Ilya Very, very, very, ... good idea. To support an infinitely good idea.

Nighty night.

@HenningMakholm Have you ever heard that the french mathematicians once classified zero as a positive number?

10:41 PM
(I will not reply to questions purportedly directed to me, but with no clear reason to ask them of me in particular).

Ooh, someone's going through my profile and upvoting me in realtime. Spooky.

Does anyone see a way to download videos from this link?
@anon
@Sri

@Kannappan: Get the addon downthemall for firefox. You'll have to restart FF. Go to the webpage and click the DTA button and you'll be able to see what to do from there hopefully.

@anon I use chrome. Any salvation?

Download firefox or learn how to wget? :) You could try this chrome add-on but I've never personally used it, so you're on your own there.
I use chrome as a minimalist surfer, and firefox as a swiss army knife. And IE for amusement and compatibility checking.

10:53 PM
@anon I see. But, FF complains that it does not know how to handle the file!

@Kannappan What file? The file for the addon? Also, just to check, you want to download entire sections of those movies and not just a few particular ones, correct?
No, I just changed my gravatar. There's no other anon like me :)

Hm. It appears I need to refresh the page to reload some avatars.
Now it's all good.
Fun question on AC!

@anon Yes. It installed the extension. When I say, start download thru blah it says, it is not dta file and that it has to learn to handle such people!

@Kannappan: On Firefox go to the download page and click Add to Firefox. What happens?

@anon I installed the extension. Restarted FF.

10:58 PM
Now Right-click the top of FF and click "Customize", put the "DownThemAll!" button on the top of the browser and go the the .mov directory (the webpage).
Also, you are interested in a mass-downloader, right? Out of experience, let me tell you it will take awhile to finish. (But if you X out of FF and then restart it, you will be able to finish your downloads later.)

@HenningMakholm Your parenthetical message is duly noted. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/3178539#3178539

Seems fine now! I seem to got hold of the trickery. Thank You anon!

No problem. I love DTAing.

11:21 PM
@anon You love dating?

DTA = Down Them All, you chronic snarker you.

Down The Mall?

I feel silly for those times I downloaded tens of documents by hand.

I got over 100k pdfs, epubs, pdfs chms etc in one go once. You need something more sophisticated - wget - to backup gutenberg though.

Whoo, finally managed to prove that geometric descent is a special case of (co)monadic descent!

11:28 PM
Is that something we could understand? :P
Jesus H. Christ, I refreshed and got 5 votes in a couple minutes :O

It's actually just a matter of proving that a bunch of equations imply some other equations.

Zhen!

Unfortunately there are a dozen different possible manipulations and I was stuck for days trying to find the right ones...

I wanted to tell you for a few days now. I recalled why they say $\kappa$-closed for $<\kappa$ unions/intersections.

Oh?

11:31 PM
This is because then you simply have $\kappa$ as the least ordinal (or cardinal) for which there is a counterexample. If you would define $\le\kappa$, then it would be harder and longer to talk about the cases where $\kappa$ is a limit cardinal.

Ah, that makes sense. Yes.
