@fbueckert.... Alright then, we have a distinct case of the crazies over there.

@AshleyNunn Strange. That didn't ping me.

user15026
I think because the periods were directly after your name because when I typed it on my phone it didn't put a space in.

@fbueckert.... It may need a space after your name.

You're right, we are on opposing sides of this argument. Content quality is much more important than any random new user. That's why I stick around. If it becomes more focused on kowtowing to ensure we get new users (when we obviously do NOT need them), Arqade will have officially become Yahoo Answers, and the expertise will evaporate. I'm here because we require (and can enforce) higher standards than anywhere else out there. I don't know what long game you're playing, but I will always oppose elevating new users over quality content. — fbueckert 4 hours ago
@fbueckert Nicely said.

I BOOKED A FLIGHT. I BOOKED A FLIGHT. I BOOKED A FLIGHT.
I'M GOING HOOOOOOOOOOOOOME.
(In seven days.)

10:09 PM
@Wipqozn Thanks.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

I get what he's going for, but it runs counter to everything Arqade stands for.
I like that he says, "My stance is unpopular, but those downvotes mean nothing, because I'm playing the long game."
> I can see a lot of folks currently disagree with me, but I'm playing the long game.

You know, I forget how young you are, Mitch...
that you think you have to be a prick to get things done...
and that you actually think that that's a new idea. -- Patch Adams
Excellent movie :)

user15026
@fbueckert What does that even mean

@James I'm not sure how holding our users to a higher standard makes us pricks, but okay.

10:13 PM
> I don't know what long game you're playing, but I will always oppose elevating new users over quality content.
@Wipqozn Oh, good. I'm not the only one who read it that way.

user15026
@fbueckert Oy.

user15026
@Wipqozn Yeah, I am not entirely sure either

user15026
Like is he saying we need to abandon our standards to coddle new users?

user15026
Because no.

@AshleyNunn That was my response to his long game message.

user15026
10:14 PM
@fbueckert I know, I am just like why does that even need saying

user15026
because it just....common sense!

@Wipqozn All I am implying is people are more prone to tell each other off in the name of getting higher quality instead of being nice about it.

@AshleyNunn He's strawmanning arguments to make himself feel better, I think.

We are very much an attack vs assist mentality to try and get the same end result

user15026
@fbueckert Looks like it

10:15 PM
@James I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you here.

@fbueckert Thats fine :) Just as it always has been.

user15026
@James I think the site is built in such a way that if users want to participate, they have the tools they need to be able to do so in a way that would net them a positive result. A lot of times it si like a OMG TEXT BOX LETS TYPE IN IT mentality, and I really don't think us coddling that behaviour is a good idea

user15026
but I mean there are always outliers, and user experience could always be better

@James It's as much a new user responsibility to conform and adapt to our standards as it is our job to teach them.
It's not totally our responsibility, or theirs.

user15026
Users gotta work with us, and we gotta work with them

10:17 PM
@AshleyNunn And if teaching happens, but learning does not...then they don't belong here.

Q: SNES save games on battery, what caused my save game to get erased?

SmileynatorBeing a proud owner of an old SNES with a few popular games, i decided to get back to playing Donkey Kong 3. I got Donkey Kong 3 2nd hand. This is a game from 1996, so 17 years old by now. I am aware that batteries tend to die on people. However i got this cardridge with no savegames (i think, d...

user15026
@fbueckert Same as any other community.

@AshleyNunn Exactly.

For what its worth, I do not agree with EBongo's post ;)

wtf Google.

10:19 PM
Uh dude, google isnt here man.. it cant hear you.

Don't you try forcing your Google+ crap on me just because I have a Youtube channel.

Personally, I find coddling new users incredibly repugnant. It's disingenuous of us to lower standards because of a new user, only to hold them to higher standards later on, after they've been here for awhile.

@fbueckert So much this. I hate when users act like it's completely our responsibility. It's really, really not. If a user can't be bothered to learn we don't want them on the site anyways, because the entire point of the network is learning.

user15026
@Powerlord Oh lord, no. Do not want.

user15026
@Wipqozn YES THIS FOREVER THIS

10:20 PM
So, I got a nice popup while browsing Youtube telling me to either confirm my name and in fine print at the bottom of said popup it said that it will automatically create a Google+ page for it.

@Wipqozn How are they supposed to learn when noone ever tells them what they're doing wrong?

First impression: the Rescue Ranger is rather awesome, the Vaccinator sucks, I'm glad TF2WH changed hands.

I'll note that I hit the X button to close it instead of accepting it.
Meaning that I refused to accept Pages TOS.

@Wipqozn Even for us; I'm not saying our new user experience is perfect, but we do make an effort.

@FEichinger I'm not sure how you got that from my post, given the context provided by the post i replied to.

10:21 PM
Hell, I tried to help out user28015, the possessor of our most-downvoted meta post ever.

@Powerlord If you already have a G+ account, it'll ask you if you want to use your real full name, which is how people have spaces in their display names on Youtube occasionally
if you decline, it asks you why IIRC

@badp I don't and I won't.

user15026
@badp I never created a G+ and it asked me.

user15026
I was like HECK NO

@AshleyNunn I feel the same.
but let's face it
A tighter integration between Youtube and Google+ is a matter of time

user15026
10:23 PM
@badp I know but I am resisting as long as possible

uh.
Valve released a video about... Day of Defeat, of all the things (youtube.com/watch?v=D8jQJ5SFqBU)

At the same time, people get tired of saying the same damn thing over and over and over. No, your ITG question is not special. We don't allow game-rec.
Just because you're tired of repeating yourself does not mean that you can't downvote and move on.

@Wipqozn From the entire discussion still boiling down to "No, we want to keep downvoting posts without giving a reason, no matter the context." I'm as opposed to obligatory comments as all of you, but without an explanation, we scare new users off. Throw in the occasional downvote on a valid post, and we end up with an elitist-looking mess. That's my stance on that whole thing anyway.

In 13 days, Google is also forcing the new channel page on all users

@Powerlord eh, that's pretty inoffensive. Comparatively

10:26 PM
@FEichinger The argument isn't that we should never comment when downvoting, it's that we have every right to.
I do see what you are saying. I just don't think it's a large of an issue as people make it to be.
I see more comments on new user posts than anything.

@Wipqozn It's just the way people explain themselves that points to that. As I said: I don't want obligatory comments either.

oh wow that video looks like it's been made in GMod

user15026
@FEichinger So what do you suggest we do?

Also, new users can't see votes, just the net score.
You can't see that until you have 1000 reputation.
The occasional downvote on a valid post won't matter since new users won't even see it.

@Wipqozn They can on their own posts, obviously. It's in their reputation score.

10:29 PM
@badp There's that.

@badp This is odd.

@badp I've gotten so used to being able to see the split that I had forgotten about this method.
@Wipqozn And really, what is and isn't valid is up for a matter of personal interpretation.
What one person deems valid could be another's trash.

See: Lore questions.
Anyways, haven't seen last week's Doctor Who yet, so that's what I'm doing now!

@fbueckert Bruce Wayne is Batman.

10:34 PM
Argh. The latest update to chrome mobile kinda broke chat

@fbueckert I wouldn't say that entirely. I mean, there are rather objective criteria for "good post". It's just that people tend to vote on whether or not they agree.

@FEichinger wiat, what? Are you talking about meta?
Votes on meta don't enter into this discussion at all.

@Wipqozn No, I'm talking about main.

Then I don't understand what you mean by "agree".
Agree with what?

@Wipqozn fb mentioned lore questions.

10:35 PM
@FEichinger And?
Some users don't think Lore questions are useful, which is a valid reason for downvoting.

I think really that this discussion usually comes up because of close votes rather than mere downvotes — questions significantly in the red and open are the exception really
@wip is it? Doesn't sound that valid to me. If close votes aren't super downvotes, downvotes aren't mini close votes

@Wipqozn That's still an objective criterium, though: "Whether or not the lore question is answerable", no?
@badp ^--- Which leads me to what @badp just said.

@badp You don't close becuse something isn't useful.
Downvoting is because this isn't useful.

@Wipqozn Let's look at it from this angle: What makes a lore question "not useful" that makes it "answerable"/"not too-localized"?

10:38 PM
@FEichinger Just because a question is answerable doesn't mean it's useful, or that it shouldn't not be downvoted.

A question that's not useful is typically closed too localized anyway

@FEichinger Did you miss a "doesn't" in there?

@Wipqozn What lore Q is "not useful", but "answerable"/"not TL"? ... Words are mean.
If it isn't useful (to other users and the site) - why is that? Most - if not all - answers to that probably are also a valid close reason. At least, I can't think of any that aren't.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I remember seeing this a while back. I liked it.

10:44 PM
@FEichinger The users who are opposed to lore questions don't think any lore questions are useful, since they don't present an actual problem that you face.
And just because something could be a valid close reason doesn't mean it isn't also a valid downvote reason. There is overlap.

They also realize that currently they are in the minority and that if those questions bother them it's unfortunately their problem

@badp And thus, I DOWNVOTE THEM ALL.

@badp Yes, but they are still allowed to down vote.

Just like I don't like all of our policies but deal with them

Personally, I downvote all the game identifacation questions get asked.
I don't care they have a picture, I think they're useless questions.
But they are answerable, so I don't close vote them.

10:46 PM
Congratulations on misusing your votes imvho

@badp This. If it's a fundamental disagreement - that should be up to meta. But these policies are designed so we have some common ground. Downvoting because one disagrees with the policy undermines that.

@badp Downvotes aren't intended to enforce the will of the community. That's what close votes are for. Downvotes exist as a way of influencing your personal opinion on the site.

@wip uh that's an original point of view you've got there

@badp Not really.

@Wipqozn To be quite honest, that right there is what promotes elitism on SE.

10:48 PM
I thought downvotes were for all the people with stupid faces
3

user15026
@Wipqozn ....uh...not really

"Since we still allow question classes I dislike I shall use all of my free downvotes as a little tantrum of mine."

Maybe I worded that wrong.
@badp Okay, if that's what it sounds liek I obviously did word that wrong.
One of the points of a downvote is users way of saying "this is a terrible question. I don't think this belongs on the site."

@Wipqozn But "terrible question" is defined by our policies.

user15026
@FEichinger Not entirely

user15026
10:50 PM
There is a lot of room for interpretation

@AshleyNunn Exactly.

@wip doesn't that effectively make down votes mini close votes?

@AshleyNunn Our policy says "lore questions are fine, if X", to stick to the example. There is not much interpretation that allows "I'll downvote all lore questions!" there.

user15026
@FEichinger I never said that!

@FEichinger ...except that isn't an arbitrary rule.

user15026
10:51 PM
That is putting a shitton of words in my mouth/fingers

@AshleyNunn I didn't say that you said that.

We have reasons for having the lore rule in place (for the record, I love lore questions, assuming they're not crap). Users who think they're crap and not useful disagree with the reasoning used.
And instead arrive at a different conclusion.

user15026
@FEichinger All I am saying is that with downvotes (and with most other actions on a site) there are room for various interpretations

Just because you disagree with the community that a question is NOTcrap doesn't mean you can't downvote it.

user15026
There are very few cut and dried situations especially where votes are concerned

10:53 PM
and reverse is also true

Honestly the only way you definitely can't vote is on the person as opposed to the post. After that it all gets kind of fuzzy

Q: What differnce is there between rescueing Lisa or waiting for the concert to finish

Memor-XAfter you regain control after you learn the stress Lisa has been going though your given a choice to go in a rescue Lisa or wait since i saved before then i check both options, saving her leads to a battle with Price Taurus with just 3 party members while waiting gives you 5, also, rescuing her...

Q: Baldur's Gate 2: Jaheira appears as a dead body in temple of Amanuator

EpsilonVectorAfter defeating Bodhi I took Jaheira's body and Bodhi's black heart to the statue in the temple of Amanuator, and Jaheira appears- as a dead body, which I can't interact with in any way. This seems like a bug. Is there some way to circumvent it, perhaps with the CLUA console?

Q: Any help on beating this dungeon?

Atomhttp://gyazo.com/f484084630544340023db014f6b8ff64.png I am have difficulty beating dungeons with the Fighter.... any tips for this dungeon and future ones? Alpha version

@AshleyNunn And I agree with that - but in the example that was being discussed, that room of interpretation didn't apply.

@FEichinger Except it does.
USers who disliek lore questions don't hate them just because they hate them, with no reasoning.

user15026
@FEichinger What example? In the case of lore, it definitely does

10:55 PM
They have reasons they dislike them, and don't think they are useful. They downvote them because of those reasons, not because they aren't useful.

I for example do mind the post score while voting because I keep seeing the most basic of questions on stack overflow get hundreds of upvotes from people that don't and that creates terrible distortions in the site and in the incentive economy

That's why I downvote ITG questions. I don't think they're useful, and so any question that is ITG I downvote since I don't think it's useful.

@Wipqozn No, it doesn't. "I disagree with the policy, so I'll downvote it." is precisely why it doesn't apply.

@FEichinger ...except that's not what I said at all.
Stop putting words in my mouth.

user15026
@FEichinger I don't think that is what is being said at all

10:56 PM
This seems to be a rather unpopular opinion on this site however and I won't ban anybody for it. I still get to tell them I think they're doing it wrong
That is all

@Wipqozn We have a policy in place that says "these posts are fine" - Downvoting them because one disagrees with them being fine, is not "interpretation.

user15026
@badp yeah, this is true

user15026
@FEichinger there is no hard and fast rule for these

user15026
people are welcome to try and create one, but as it stands, they are a bit of a nebulous category, some people think they belong, others don't.

@FEichinger That's still not what I'm saying.

10:58 PM
@AshleyNunn Then give reasoning and suggest to close them? If they're not fine, they're OT. If they're fine, they're fine. That's the whole point.
When it gets fuzzy, you make your case, see if others agree and there you go.

@FEichinger That sounds like you're saying if you can't downvote, you can't close vote.

I dunno honestly how to feel when you have to pay a reputation tax on less loved kinds of questions, exercised moreover for free

user15026
@FEichinger ....dude, you are expecting black and white behaviour, and that is an impossibility in a site this large, 100% of trhe time

It feels troubling to me on skin level

user15026
@badp what do you mean? I think I agree, but I am not entirely sure

11:01 PM
@ash I'm just wondering aloud what'd happen if more people voted like @wip
Like get ten people who dislike lore questions

@FEichinger Not all questions that receive downvotes get them because we disagree with site policy. I'd wager most of the time, these questions receive downvotes because they are bad questions that just happen to be on topic.

@badp you seem to have misunderstood what I said, in the sense I worded it poorly when I first said it.

You ask one and that's -20 Rep. Kinda like a tax

user15026
@badp Ah, okay, I get what you are saying

@wip I'm reading your attempts to clarify and it doesn't seem very different still. Care to try again?

11:02 PM
What I mean is that I downvote all ITG questions because I think each individual question is not useful. My "I downvoteall ITG" just means that I use the same reasoning for downvoting each ITG question. It's not "THIS IS ITG! I NEED TO DOWNVOTE!" IT's "THis question is not useful because...", and that reasoning just applies to all ITG questions.

user15026
I know that is a possible voting situation, and while I don't like the idea of it, I get that it happens, because people who do so are going to be able to justify their pattern, whatever it is, for good or ill. Not useful is a hard metric to universally quantify.

user15026
Its like herding cats.

The end result doesn't change though, although the intent is different and more noble

@MBraedley The whole site policy thing is just about the lore Q example. If they're objectively bad questions (post quality, for instance), that's perfectly fine.
"not useful" is still something that we can close for - unless it is valid by site policy. In which case, again, we end up in the dilemma of it being about policy.

@FEichinger Everything is site policy.
It's just that a lot of things are drawn from site policy, instead of stated specifically.
And you stil are twisting words around.
Just because someone disagrees with the policy doesn't mean they are downvoting because they disagree with the policy.
2
And just because a question is allowed and valid doesn't mean it's not down vote worthy, ro even up vote worthy.
and for the record I'm not 100% sure what you mean by valid
You have yet to define it
I assume you mean is on-topic.
and not close worthy.

user15026
11:07 PM
@badp Part of it is just having a wide userbase with a lot of opinions, and that is uncontrollable.

@Wipqozn "valid" as in: decent post-quality (as in: everything that makes an objectively good post - spelling, content-complete, ...)

At any rate while it makes me uneasy it's not "illegal" and even if it was I'd have no way to enforce them. I do realize that "random" downvotes aren't random at all and quite obvious in the voter's mind, actually, and if you vote like that I'd actually rather you didn't comment on the post before you explode all of the question comment threads :-P

The new KSP loading screen is awesome in and of itself. Go play the game!

user15026
@badp There is that

@badp Which is another good reason to not need to comment. We don't need huge fucking comment wars everytime someone downvote a controversial question type.

user15026
11:10 PM
@MBraedley I wish I could play that game, but every time I do I just feel stupid, so I haven't gotten past the demo

</shameless plug>

@wip maybe that's what ender means when he says you shouldn't downvote to begin with :-P at least now I can see where he comes from.

user15026
@MBraedley I'd have to first get something in the air

@badp YOU'RE NOT MY REAL DAD! YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! GONNA STICK IT TO THE MAN!

@AshleyNunn Keep things simple and you'll be in orbit in no time.

11:12 PM
@wip what are you sticking to me?

@badp I don't know.

Seriously, my Station Delivery rocket is just five mainsails strapped to another, and a bit of maneuvering for the final.

I didn't think that far- HOLY CRAP IT'S @PrivatePansy!
He's alive!

@AshleyNunn help me check a stream?

user15026
Yay!

11:13 PM
I was worried basic training would destroy you.

Yes. Yes I am.

user15026
@BenBrocka Sure!

Just make site it's no cutie mark or I ban you for... Umm... Plagiarism. Yeah.

@badp I'd photoshop your gravatar onto a pony but I'm lazy.
I also don't have photoshop.

user15026
@FEichinger I cant even reach space

11:14 PM
@Wipqozn Go back and read last night's transcript

Fredley's already done that. The pony didn't enjoy it one bit

@PrivatePansy That's a lot of work.

Let me tell you, it was worse for her than it was for me

@AshleyNunn Keep it simple.

I wonder if I should ban him for cruelty against fantasy animals

11:16 PM
@badp Actually I think that was me

@PrivatePansy: So it's only for 9-weeks?

You would've done a better job

@badp I'm pretty sure that a ban is just a super downvote, so you should do that.

I wonder if you're using your own laptop @yij

@Wipqozn I'm only staying for four weeks in the Basic Military Training Center, then 5 weeks of vocational training, which supposedly is also part of BMT
@badp I'm at home right now. You were here last night weren't you?

11:18 PM
Uh.
That answers my question

user15026
@PrivatePansy Nope, I was out helping a friend locate a lost cat, but I am reading the transcript now

I... Your definition of last night confuses me, it was merely early afternoon

Sorry, fat fingered that reply button

@Wipqozn Aww. You spoiled it for me!

@fbueckert YOU DESERVED IT!
Because...I don't know...something...

11:20 PM
and for most of it I thought you were just a random guy on the internet anyway while I only skimmed chat because I was playing tf2

Last night for me, which was around 1200 GMT

@PrivatePansy That's not my timezone at all though.
You should only usemy timezone.

user15026
@PrivatePansy Yeah, I didn't get to a computer until like 345am EST

Wipq's timezone is now the CET
Uniformity achieved. Success
(CET is what time it is right now in Greenwich anyway)

Anyway, yes I'm alive, training is fairly relaxed, and the only problem is its all rather boring since we spend a lot of time doing nothing and to do anything at all we have to do a lot of paperwork

11:22 PM
Only a bunch of barely inhabited islands are using GMT as we speak

user15026
@PrivatePansy That does sound pretty boring

@yij how's it like to hold a gun in there hands

@badp The gun is rather heavy. It's not too uncomfortable to hold, though

Mhm.
A pistol I assume?
Please feel free not to answer
I realise the details might be classified and the classification might be classified and...
It's hard being the man who's being sticked onto :-P

No, a rifle. This one, in fact. None of the things I'm saying are classified - the BMT schedule was part of a presentation given to parents of recruits, who are not signatories of the Official Secrets Act, and the weapons we use in BMT can be found on Wikipedia
The SAR 21 ("Singapore Assault Rifle - 21st Century") is a bullpup assault rifle designed and manufactured in Singapore. First revealed and subsequently adopted by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in 1999, it was designed and developed over a four-year period and was intended to replace the locally license-built M16S1 Many of its design features are directly intended to counter the weaknesses of the M16S1 as encountered operationally by some infantrymen. The rifle is being sold for export use aside from domestic use. In the United States, it is being marketed by ST Kinetics via its Ameri...

@badp Nope. Hunger, health, and sanity.
@Wipqozn You know you want to. Give iiiiiiiin. (cc: @AshleyNunn)

Sanity. Hm.

@badp Yep. You can gradually be driven insane to the point that you start hallucinating, and those hallucinations can then try to kill you.

The Matrix school of thought I see. If your brain thinks you're dead...

@Fluttershy I die so much

@AshleyNunn You unlock better characters then though, right?
(I have no idea.)

@MBraedley Seats need some time getting used to, then?

user15026
@PrivatePansy That is incredible.

(Maybe the longer you live the faster they unlock.)

@FEichinger No, I was just seeing how much air I could get around the launch pad

@MBraedley ohlol.
